Retrieving Connection, Learning from Nature Mumbai, India Statement: In densely populated cities, it is important for people to couple with their immediate environment as it provides opportunities to develop a connection between culture and nature. Uncovering the value of natural processes will foster awareness about major problems and re-integrate people with the environment around them in a sustainable way. Introduction I grew up in Mumbai which is a highly dense and extremely busy city. Mumbai has frequently been thought in binary terms – those who have more than they can ever need and others who have desperately little to live on. There is also some major scarcity of water in Mumbai as the population is increasing every day. Apart from the problems faced, I am more concerned about the lack of awareness for solving these issues. Also the secondary aspect that was of a concern to me was people have very little connection to their immediate natural environment.

It is also believed that in childhood we have attachments to the place we grew up in and carry the lessons we learned from it for the remainder of our lives. This thesis activates the medium of Landscape to develop a connection between the social and natural infrastructure. The goal is also to make the communities aware about the major problems such scarcity of water.

Mumbai’s biggest problem is its distribution, control and protection of water. 10% of the population waits over 10 hours for clean water. On a daily basis, Mumbai meets only 84% of its water demand and yet the city is likely to increase its population in the next ten years to over 20 million. One of my other major concerns that ties back to these problems is that people have very little connection to their immediate natural environment. I believe that if a person is not given time to connect with nature, we cannot expect them to care for it. Proposal The idea is to add another layer of the intervention that will rejuvenate the existing conditions of the neighborhood instead of redesigning it. Main Street has been identified considering the existing topography, major activity areas and access from the major roads. Garden pipes are located based on solar orientation and maximum view sheds.

Study models to test the connection of each unit to the wall using a U - Channel
Garden Pipes Water has always been given a symbolic importance in Indian tradition. Each module is made up fiber reinforced concrete that can be directly attached to the existing building wall with the help of a U-channel and a back plate. Each of these modules is filled with cleaning soil and vegetation that cleans the roof water that can be drinkable. Thus each building becomes self-sustained in term of water demands.

2 Landscapes of Return Jamica Bay, New York
This proposal for 200 acres cemetery at the Canarsie Island in Jamaica Bay, New York draws parallels between the human cycle of life and death and the vegetation cycle of germination and decomposition. The site is shaped by the fluvial process that encourages formation of the otherwise depleting Salt Marshes around the site. Site Description: My site is on Canarsie Island in Jamaica Bay, New York. I picked this site because New York is a densely populated city and there is not enough space for burial. Yet there is still a large amount of space devoted to cemeteries, just not enough to meet the demand. My intention is to use this existing island which is a habitat for 350 species of birds. I feel reusing the land after every burial process can help solve the problem of space and pollution. Proposal: Promession, an ecological alternative for Burial A cemetery is a place where the connection between the body and the ground can be directly experienced. The very concept of “ashes to ashes, dust to dust� applies not only to bodies but to the earth itself. The vegetation cycle is defined by constant creation and destruction of plant material. In order to create grounds for the dead the proposal is to use Promession, an ecological alternative to burial and cremation created by Suzanne Wiigh-Maask. It is a process in which the body is freeze-dried in liquid nitrogen, dehydrated as a human body is made of 70% water. It goes through a metal separation process and what remains is 30% of the original weight of the body about 20-25 kg. The remains are then buried in a potato starch container in the ground 20cm deep. It goes through aerobic decomposition and turns to compost in 6-12 months. Specific trees and shrubs are planted using the compost harvested from the burial ground. This helps in forestation and provides a habitat for birds.
In all the precedent studies the graves were organized in a way that they have a view of the water body. I picked Canarsie Island as ideal site for this project as it offered 360 degree view shed towards the bay.
Intent: Embodied experience The choreography of this sequence has played a critical role in the design process. The idea of reusing the same land over infinite number of years leaves us with many future opportunities. This proposal aims to express the idea that both the cycle of life and the cycles of ecological processes allow us to see the passage of time. The vegetation will change and escape the parameters that we have defined, the ground will continue to shift and change, and the bodies of the deceased will return to the earth and define a new stratum in the physical or ecological accumulation of time.

Woonasquatuckett River, Providence, RI
The words “Ecology”, “Site” and “Design” reflect understanding of biotic, abiotic and cultural systems. The words reflect our aspirations to conserve, restore and re-shape those systems. Each word is packed with complex and evolving meanings that reflect the state of human knowledge of the physical environments in which we live and our attitudes to the value of those environments. This studio examines these topics with the twin objectives of establishing an evolving and dynamic understanding of ecology.

Site The locus for the studio is the corridor of the Woonasquatuckett River and its post-industrial and residential environs extending from Donigian Park in the west to Waterplace Park in downtown Providence. This is a forgotten area, poised between upstream efforts to restore the hydrological, habitat, and recreational integrity of the Woonasquatucket River and the more recent redevelopment of the urban center of Water Place Park. The site is dissected by commuter corridors, subject to flooding, and polluted by surface water and sewage overflows yet it remains an important habitat corridor with the potential of becoming both a significant recreational route into the city and a vital ecological and cultural resource for the surrounding communities. Proposal The program consist of a pedestrian bridge, a gathering platform that engages habitat zone along the river, a public market with shelters and storm water strategies that engage the market and mitigate impact of storm water on the river. The idea is to collect all the runoff from the Main Street & Davis Park on the north of the site, clean the polluted water before it enters the river with the addition of a bioswales along the site. All the market shops are oriented to get the maximum sunlight when they open in the morning. Special attention is given to the pedestrian and vehicular movement on the site.

4 Constructing the intelligence of a project As architects we develop strategies, arguments, ideas and criteria that offer opportunities to address a variety of problems in interrelated ways. In this sense, an architecture project can be seen less as a set of answers to its circumstances and more as a set of questions to its “intelligence”. This project is about a series of didactic assignments that introduces principles, concepts and skills to construct the “intelligence of project”. My focus was to develop the tectonic, spatial and to address complex manipulations in terms of experience, inhabitation, structure, scale and site. The project started with a Sheepshank knot. The goal was to understand spatial characteristics, adjacencies and relationships between the interior and the exterior.

5 Waterfront Development Providence, RI
Water front development is a project that took place at the Providence River. The idea behind this project was to develop a design based on Site Impressions, Concept and a found Curio. As part of this project, I developed the Concept through my Site Impressions. The Concept was further refined through my found Curio, a textural object. “Gesture” models were developed to understand the textural conditions. The “gesture” models were then interpreted into landform. Concept The project concept is to explore textures on large and small scale, create a andform having textural conditions and understand how texture can help guide people to experience landscape in a particular way.

6 Multi-Unit Housing Pune, India
This economical housing caters to middle class families who prefers to stay in Apartments. As the cultural capital of Maharashtra Pune has rich Architectural History. Preserving this character was the important goal of this project. Site conditions: The site was in Pune, India and has a strong cultural importance. It was also affected by the increase in the IT trend in the region. There are lot of famous temple and designed buildings. Maintaining the heritage and the essence of the city was an important design consideration. Inspired by the famous Saras Baugh temple, this design features a view of the temple as one enters the housing community.

Marta Fry Landscape Associates (MFLA), San Francisco, CA Name of the Project: Emeryvill Centre of Community Life (ECCL) ECCL is a school project that is intended to be used by the community as well. It includes sports field, imaginative play area and other possibilities for recreational activities like outdoor theatre, fitness programs, art fairs etc. I was responsible for making rendered perspectives for client presentation and formatting the presentation document. I also worked of specification detailing on the construction document set.

Fletcher Studio, San Francisco, CA Name of the Project (Video Game): The Witness The Witness is an upcoming 3D puzzle video game by Jonathan Blow, an independent developer and the creator of Braid. I was responsible for research and 3D modelling the landscape spaces. Experience and discovery for the player where two most important criteria while designing this play island. It was a unique experience to work on this game as it displayed how architects can also add value to the game industry.

AECOM, San Francisco, CA Name of the Project: Intuit, Mountain View, CA My role as designer was to make all the diagrams and section for the Design guidelines document. Also map all the existing approximately 1000 trees on the site. Understanding the tree species and picking the trees that has to be remained on the site. Close attention was paid to each and every tree depending on its water usage, Heritage species, age and condition of the tree. This project was very important to my experience as it gave me the opportunity to not only work on the document but all made me understand the various process involved in designing a project when there were tight deadlines.

My visit to Japan was an intriguing experience because of its unique culture.
9 Explorations
Sculpture Form of human body inspired me to create sculptures. I started analyzing different postures, motions and structural details of humans. My creations started with realistic sculptures and then progressed towards abstraction. My work was recognized and awarded a spot award at the NASA zonal convention. (Nationalassociations of students of Architecture). Through my work, I learned how to handle materials like clay, wood, metal, wires and string.

Bamboo This two-day workshop in my second year of architecture college gave me the opportunity to explore the tensile qualities of bamboo as a building material. The task was to design a parking shed, Geodesic dome and a tower. Building a Geodesic dome was an challenging task for our The team had to carefully coordinate design and execution activities due to group size and time constraints. team of eight students and three professors. The team was allocated 72 hours to build the dome. We constructed a 8mdiameter Geodesic dome and one 10m height tower in bamboo.
