RE/ FRAMING GAP

a project that reimagines chye seng huat hardware as a haven to connect potters and jalan besar community using pottery to address mental health adopting principles of kintsugi, which is the act of joining broken pieces with gold lacquer, the site intervention also acts as the 'joint' that connects people through the new iteration and program

jalan besar; the industrial heart of singapore “its all about the texture, the smell in the air and the traces it leaves as an old neighbourhood near the city” there are also wood crafters, electrical and tool suppliers, metal crafters and not to forget the residents living in the vicinity

as it was once and currently is an industrial area, the working culture there is very stressful due to the repetitive chores that takes a toll on the residents’ mental health

even though kampong glam is very diversed in its local culture and art scenes, it is a fact that the area still care less for children as it is mostly dominated by working adults and drinkers from the bars. thus, the integration of art and architecture is meant to create a safe space for children and the rest of the users to gather back their kampong spirit

LASALLE X CRAFTAXIS a collaborative project which intention is to design a wallpaper based on our chosen theme, which is grand millenial. the project emphasizes peranakan culture as the focus

The history of Singapore’ s Peranakan culture goes as far back as the 15th century; Back when Chinese immigrants were settling in Malaya.

t

A vanishing culture; Peranakan is long-forgotten as part of Singaporean’ s identity; from the traditional food, fabric, ceramics with pretty little patterns and architecture.

our design process, we aim to elevate Singapore’ s culture and identity through the wallpaper.

wandering around; to communicate that the idea of Peranakan is not only about a culture to be retained, but also a journey to be experienced by people.

16 tones - 4 hues Peranakans have always a distinct taste in color which in-between each components and elements of the artwork.

a soul; Merlion is considered as a monster, a mythical creature which part animal and part human; a soul to represent the strength of Singapore

black and white; only these two colours are being used here; an enigmatic approach . The artwork is intended to direct focus of the users on the details.

J

the soul

the wallpaper is a framework to illustrate a national identity of Singapore. It is made black and white to remove any distraction of color and helps the viewer to focus on the details instead. The usage of animal and plant use to create a sense of unity between them. “When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls.”
