Welcome to our journey towards sustainability... Last March, our team was visiting one of our partner producers in a rural region in NW India when we met Anita. Anita is the master pattern maker in this textile producing organization. We learned while talking with her that she joined the organization a few years back as a sewer but had aspirations of becoming the master pattern maker. She was determined to hold this position, which is conventionally dominated by males and seniority. This organization supported her aspiration and sponsored her for a 2 year training, which led her to earn this position. We could see in Anita’s eyes a confidence that she could take on the world. Not only be a bread winner for her family but also a leader and a role model for her community. The organization’s attitude towards investing and bringing out the maximum potential in its people has created a long term positive impact in Anita’s life. This is a prime example of sustainability! This story illustrates how Fair Trade practices create a sustainable world and proves that our mission in creating sustrainable products result in positive change. For Handmade Expressions, sustainability means creating products that respect and restore people and our planet. It means creating products that do not cause harm to our global community and reversing some of the harm that has already been done. It is an ambitious goal, but with each product and each trade, we are improving lives, creating opportunities and protecting our environment. Sustainability for us is not an end goal but a way of working. It is the reason we choose to be in this business.

two teams. one goal. Handmade Expressions is a global company, working on the ground with artisan groups in India, as well as retailers and other customers in the U.S. and throughout the world. Our India team develops and maintains artisan producer relationships and handles packaging, consolidating and exporting, while Handmade Expression’s Austin team manages design, sales and marketing. This approach gives us the advantage of reduced product development and production lead times and costs, and allows Handmade Expressions to overcome cultural barriers.

Located in the city of Jaipur, these artisans have become stitching masters. This group began as a local boutique for tailor-made clothing, but grew into a production unit to employ more people under fair working conditions. The fabric is all locally-sourced, some
directly
from
small
enterprises of marginalized printers or weavers and others from local markets. Many of the bags, such as our new denim range, use upcycled pieces of gently-used fabrics to craft new functional products.

The majority of our jewelry is crafted by a small enterprise of Muslim artisans in Old Delhi. They use mostly natural materials, such as metals or glass beads, to create trendy jewelry items. The men and women are all paid fair wages and there is a great sense of pride and positivity amongst this artisan group.

Handmade paper is a very old and traditional process in India. All of our paper products are eco-friendly and tree-free, made from recycled cotton scraps from the textile industry. After cotton pieces are sorted, they are shredded and made into a pulp then pressed into large paper sheets. The sheets are hung to dry and flattened. There is a very unique feel to the paper and sheets are soft and sturdy. The paper-making groups we work with are located in Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan, and they provide fair wages and good working conditions for the artisans.

Our new range of striped rugs are made by a cooperative of handloom weavers in a small village

Delhi.

cooperative is a project of a local NGO that was founded to provide support to the rural poor. Traditionally, this was a rural region and most people worked in agriculture. However, rapid expansion of Delhi is causing the area to urbanize. Men and women are trained to weave textiles on traditional looms to earn income outside the fields. In a small village
in the
Kutch region of Gujarat, a community of expert producers craft our copper bells. This very old craft lies in the art of tuning. Traditionally, bells were used by herders as a way to identify their cattle. While these hand-tuned bells are still in fact used throughout the region, the artisans began producing them for export after a devastating earthquake that hit Kutch in 2001. The sales of their bells has allowed them to provide support for their families and rebuild the community. 122

In April 2011,
as a community development initiative, Handmade
Expressions contributed $6,000 to purchase and install 100 solar lamps throughout 4 villages in the desert region of Rajasthan. The women artisans who benefited from the project work with our partner NGO. This region is very remote with little access to electricity. Handmade Expresions recognized the livelihood issues regarding the lack of electricity and the health hazards of kerosene lamps currently used in the villages.
In order to provide better well being, Handmade Expressions arranged for efficient solar lamps to be installed in the homes. Women from the region were included in the decision- making process and trained on how to use solar lamps. They were very excited about the new opportunities the lamps provided for their families and community. Now, women will be able to earn extra money working after sunset and children will be able to finish their schoolwork. This will also reduce household expenses as they will no longer have to purchase kerosene lamps.

WHOLESALE ORDERING INFORMATION You may order online or place your order by phone, fax or email. Minimum Order We have a $100 minimum order. There are also minimum quantities by item. In an effort to reduce plastic packaging, all products must be ordered in multiples of the minimum quantity. Payment Information We accept all major credit cards and checks. Checks should be made payable to Handmade Expressions. Please contact us if you would like any other payment arrangements. Lead Times Generally orders will be shipped out within 3-5 business days. If you have an urgent deadline, please make note of it when you place your order. You may also place orders in advance with staggered or future ship dates to suit your business needs. Shipping Information All orders are shipped out from our warehouse in Austin, TX. Shipping charges are based on weight, size, and destination of the order. We ship UPS Ground for all domestic orders and use FedEx or USPS for international shipments. We may use another shipping option upon request, and use your shipping account if you specify on your order. Backorder Policy Handmade Expressions will ship all available items for your requested ship date and automatically put any unavailable products on back order. We will ship any backordered items that become available within six weeks in one combined shipment. Shipping charges for backordered items will not exceed 10% of the value of your backorder. Any remaining items which are still not available after 6 weeks will be automatically canceled and your original order will be closed out. At that time, if there are any items you would still like to receive from Handmade Expressions, please place a new order. Please be sure to state clearly on your order if you have specific backorder requests or policies, which are different than our stated policy. Return Policy We want you to be completely satisfied with our products. However, if you are dissatisfied with our product for any reason, you may make a return within 15 days of receipt of item(s). Products must be returned in their original condition with product tags and without retail price stickers. For returns related to damaged or defective items, please contact us within 15 days of receipt of the item(s). We will work with you in order to provide a replacement or refund/credit for the product. Customer Loyalty Program To show our appreciation of your continued business, we provide customers who reach $2,500 in collective orders during the calendar year with FREE GROUND SHIPPING for the rest of the year in the US (offer not vaild for Hawaii and Alaska). Note: custom orders are exempt from the loyalty program at this time. Please see our website for exact details. Territor y Protection We value our retail partners and understand that offering unique products is a key element to your success. Handmade Expressions offers “protection� for retail partners that carry a strong representation of our products in their store - meaning, we reserve the right to decline selling our products to stores within close proximity to an existing retail partner.
