Dear Friends and Partners, Welcome to our first annual catalog of sustainable, eco-friendly products! Inside you’ll find more than 100 new fair trade products that not only look good, but do good. These exclusive new designs are fresh, inspired and have moving stories about their origins and how they’re made. Through these years, I’ve come to realize that we at Handmade Expressions are rebels in this industry. We continue to focus on working with smaller and rural artisan communities, which makes our work much harder, but we also realize that they are the folks who need this connection to trade. We focus on one country so we can build deeper partnerships there. We continue to challenge the materials and processes we use in our products to make sure we are not harming our planet. As we are growing bigger, our carbon footprint is becoming smaller. We are rebels embracing a sustainability revolution. It is a tough, yet an incredibly rewarding journey. The satisfaction of making positive impacts for producers and our environment, and growing a global base of ethical buyers and consumers, keeps us going and striving for more. Our new Boho bag collection has a beautiful story behind it that starts with the handloom fabric. Created by a small group of weaving artisans on handlooms, this truly is a special fabric made with care and love. But the story goes beyond the fabric. In order to convert that great fabric into this bag collection, Handmade Expressions leveraged our large network of artisan communities and brought together the best of seven different artisan groups to make these bags! Skilled crafters in stitching, leather making, metal accessories, riveting, tassels and block printing all contributed to the design and creation of these high-quality bags. Fun and functional, Boho bags are a sustainability success story â&#x20AC;&#x201D; generating income and opportunities for several hundred artisans throughout India.

The eco-chic Collection

These plastic bags are a perfect example of blending traditional art forms with modern day usage. Although hand weaving techniques are very common in India, weaving recycled plastic bags instead of yarn is a new, sustainable approach. Because these lightweight bags are durable and spacious, they are great for everyday use, heading to the beach or carrying books and electronic devices. This line of upcycled products is crafted from post-consumer plastic that would otherwise go to landfill. Skilled artisans in the Kutch region of India developed this concept to create threads of our plastic that can be woven to create new, functional products. Women were then trained in traditional handloom weaving techniques to craft the bags you see here. This project allows for sustainable employment opportunities and growth for artisans.

living our values. making an impact. In June 2012 we went to visit the artisan group responsible for making the majority of our jewelry. What began as a small artisan group working from a tiny, congested workshop in Old Delhi is now a large community who has been able to improve the quality of life for their families as well as support sustainable production efforts. Economic success provided the group with the opportunity to move into a new, larger workshop with more environmentally-friendly processes. The group also took initiative in creating better ventilated spaces and containers to properly dispose of chemicals. They now source materials that are mostly recyclable and address artisan and health concerns by using entirely lead-free, cadmiumfree,and nickel-free materials. Their wages are now much greater than prior to working with fair trade partners. In addition, we have seen vast social progress over the years of our partnership. This artisan community has strongly supported the education of their members and their families. Women now take night classes and all children are going to school.The founder’s daughter is going to be the first female of the artisan community to attend college and the group is extremely proud! This impact report was encouraging to our team at Handmade Expressions, knowing our relationships are creating social and environmental empowerment. This group has proven to be a true success story with a love for their entire community.

LIVING OUR VALUES, MAKING AN IMPACT Women comprise 70 percent of the world’s poorest people and own only 1 percent of the titled land. They suffer not only from unequal access to education and training, but also from discrimination. In India the literacy rate for females is barely 50% and men are twice as likely to be employed. When greater income equality is achieved across gender lines, it helps decrease poverty over generations. Studies have indicated that for every dollar a woman earns, she invests 80 cents in her family.

One of Handmade Expressions’ major initiatives is women’s empowerment and livelihood generation. Our partnership with an all-women’s cooperative in the rural desert region in western Rajasthan, India, is just one example of this. Women learn the art of hand appliqué from fellow village women and teach this art to others; we provide training and workshops to strengthen design, quality and their entrepreneurship skills. This is a grassroots setup where these women artisans are distributed over 40 villages in the region, most without electricity, running water and roads. Women come once a week to the cooperative office, submit their products, and collect more raw materials to work on in their homes. Profits from this art have helped bring to the region medical centers, solar electricity, evening schools for kids, and vocational colleges for women. Women have also begun participating in local political processes and girls have completed primary education and continue on to pursue higher education. Handmade Expressions has an ongoing commitment to support this group of women artisans. Their handmade products (Cutwork Messenger Bags, p. 25; Kantha Pillows, p. 116) provide them economic empowerment, improved livelihoods for their families, and education for girls. Win-win-win!

Children are attending schools and colleges, training to become advocates, engineers and professors. living our values. making an impact. In June 2012, Handmade Expressions team members went to visit the various communities in Northern India where our partner wood artisans reside. Roughly 15,000 skilled carvers are associated with a large NGO who is dedicated to social development for artisans and their families. Over the last few years of our partnership, we have witnessed significant developments in education and overall livelihood among this community. Children are attending schools and colleges, training to become advocates, engineers and professors. The community was excited to share that the son of an artisan is now a Judge! Through sales of wooden crafts as well as the help of various government grants, numerous development activities have been achieved. The NGO has provided most artisans with health insurance cards. There is an onsite doctor in the village office available to provide consultations and free prescriptions for medications. Last year, a library was built and proposals to establish a school and hospital in the next year are underway. There also were 15 solarpowered street lamps installed on otherwise dark village roads. Handmade Expressions has supported their initiatives by providing 50% of the communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s orders over the last few years. Our India team SETU has also sponsored particular skills development and training programs for the artisan community. The success and ongoing growth of this NGO is not only apparent in their livelihood, increased income and support from the government, but it also lingers in the air. An uplifting energy in the community confirms the positive impact of our partnerships and proves our work is indeed heading in the right direction.

facts about Our new Naturally Dyed Wood Toys

These products are produced in a small village called Etikoppaka, where a community of about 200 artisans revitalizes the age-old practice of using vegetative dying traditions. These toys are made of soft wood and colored with natural dyes harvested from roots, leaves, fruit, seeds, bark and lacquer. These magnificently colored products are nontoxic and environmentally friendly. No synthetic dyes or materials are used, making them safe even for babies. The natural dyes are not only lead-free, but also add shine and produce a wide variety of colors, tones and shades. The colors have better luster and are more transparent than synthetic dyes due to their own developed special technology. To prepare the dyes, the raw material derived from different parts of various trees or plants â&#x20AC;&#x201D; such as Bixa orellana seeds for red or orange â&#x20AC;&#x201D; are powdered and boiled to form a thick solution until it starts producing lather. The concentrates are then filtered. The colors and shades depend on various factors, such as the temperature at which it is boiled, duration of boiling, and the quantities of water and raw material. Dried leaves of mogali are used for finishing and polishing. A few years ago, the artisans established Etikoppaka Vana Samrakshana Samiti (Community Forest Management) to conserve the dye-bearing species and wood plantation, and rejuvenate existing root stock. This not only preserves the ancient knowledge traditions, but also builds biodiversity in the region.

Sustainably Processed Leather For years, we have sourced â&#x20AC;&#x153;cruelty-freeâ&#x20AC;? leather from village tanners in the local haats (markets in India). Because cows are sacred in Hindu culture, the majority of leather comes from animals that have died of natural causes. By sourcing directly from the people who were tanning the skins in the villages, we felt certain of the cruelty-free aspect. Over time, however, larger tanneries outside the villages have increasingly grown and less village tanners are tanning skins by hand, which has dwindled the supply from local haats. The leather craft and handmade paper communities are often based in rural regions where there is no other opportunity for employment. In order to continue creating jobs for these skilled artisans, we still buy the majority of our leather from haats and from some of the larger tanneries run by the government. We have chosen to move away from the cruelty-free claim because we do not have direct access and certainty about conditions in the large tanneries. While the majority of our leather is still cruelty-free and hand-processed (which is much more environmentally friendly than industrially tanned leather), we believe itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to be transparent about this. The tanning is chromium-free and our journals create a significant number of sustainable jobs for the communities involved in leather craft and handmade paper-making. So you can still feel confident that our leather products are sustainably sourced and processed.

Our line of rugs and striped napkins are handwoven by artisans on traditional looms on the outskirts of New Delhi. These skilled artisans use three different types of looms to craft a variety of patterns and textiles. With the rapid expansion of Delhi and urbanization of surrounding areas, many people are moving from villages to cities in search of work. An ancient craft in India, block printing is a painstaking process of labor-intensive steps that can produce the most stunning and unique art made by hands and nature. Basic Tools: Wooden blocks, fabric, natural dye

01:

Creating Wood Blocks Carvers cut into blocks of wood to create mirror image of the pattern to be imprinted. Each color gets its own block. Intricate designs can take several carvers up to three days to create a pattern! Blocks soak in oil for 2 weeks to soften the wood.

02:

Fabric Preparation Raw, unbleached fabric is dipped into a mix of natural herbs and cow dung to make it absorbent for dyes. It is then washed and dried.

03:

Dye Preparation Natural dyes are extracted from plants and minerals such as flowers, roots, rocks and iron. The dyes are prepared as liquids and put in a tray with a sponge in which the block is dipped.

04:

Block Printing Starting from one corner, artisan presses block with wet dye onto fabric. The block is dipped again in dye and reapplied at precise spots for pattern continuation. When the pattern is complete, artisans toss sawdust on it to absorb additional dye.

05:

Finish For natural dyes, the printed fabric is usually washed or boiled for the final color to come to surface. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fascinating to see how the color changes throughout the process!

WHOLESALE ORDERING INFORMATION You may order online or place your order by phone, fax or email. Minimum Order We have a $100 minimum order. There are also minimum quantities by item. In an effort to reduce plastic packaging, all products must be ordered in multiples of the minimum quantity. Payment Information We accept all major credit cards and checks. Checks should be made payable to Handmade Expressions. Please contact us if you would like any other payment arrangements. Lead Times Generally orders will be shipped out within 3-5 business days. If you have an urgent deadline, please make note of it when you place your order. You may also place orders in advance with staggered or future ship dates to suit your business needs. Shipping Information All orders are shipped out from our warehouse in Austin, TX. Shipping charges are based on weight, size, and destination of the order. We ship UPS Ground for all domestic orders and use FedEx or USPS for international shipments. We may use another shipping option upon request, and use your shipping account if you specify on your order. Backorder Policy Handmade Expressions will ship all available items for your requested ship date and automatically put any unavailable products on back order. We will ship any backordered items that become available within six weeks in one combined shipment. Shipping charges for backordered items will not exceed 10% of the value of your backorder. Any remaining items which are still not available after 6 weeks will be automatically canceled and your original order will be closed out. At that time, if there are any items you would still like to receive from Handmade Expressions, please place a new order. Please be sure to state clearly on your order if you have specific backorder requests or policies, which are different than our stated policy. Return Policy We want you to be completely satisfied with our products. However, if you are dissatisfied with our product for any reason, you may make a return within 15 days of receipt of item(s). Products must be returned in their original condition with product tags and without retail price stickers. For returns related to damaged or defective items, please contact us within 15 days of receipt of the item(s). We will work with you in order to provide a replacement or refund/credit for the product.
