Introduction Based on your recent investigations—in particular, the final sectional model and drawings from the Proun study—you are asked to develop a design proposal for a mixed-use project (“Paper Skyscraper”) on West Jackson Avenue, a combination of retail space and apartments. The site is the parcel just west of the proposed New Knoxville Youth Hostel. Like the previous design investigation, the New Knoxville Youth Hostel, this project has the potential to serve as a formal and spatial joint between a variety of domains: between old and new, industrial and commercial, white collar and blue collar, poetic and practical, temporary and permanent, solid and void, and between public and private. Site The site of the new “Paper Skyscraper” is an irregularly shaped parcel approximately 6000 sf in area located east of the intersection of Broadway and West Jackson. The site is significant for a number of reasons, not the least of which is its location at the boundary between North Knoxville and downtown Knoxville. A second, and related, attribute of the site is that it seems to lie in a zone shared by the orthogonal grid of downtown Knoxville and a different grid to the north and east. Third, the site is near three major transportation routes: the railroad lines, the bridge at North Broadway, and interstates 275 and 40.
