The Outlook
A position-by-position outlook for the 2011 Gamecocks
THE Outlook Building a competitive cauldron defines this year’s atmosphere with JSU Soccer. With 14 returners and 13 newcomers, we are excited about how the young and the old will merge into one champion. During the spring, the returners battled tough, quality competition and our focus was primarily on our offense. With the loss of several key players defensively, we knew that we would have to rebuild our defensive line from the ground up throughout the course of preseason. We will be anticipating much adjustment with new faces and a strong back bone of veteran leadership that is driving this JSU Soccer squad.
The Importance of Leadership We begin the outlook of this year’s JSU Soccer squad with our Senior Captains, Chelsea Pelletier and Emily Bielaga. Before breaking down the squad by position, it is important to recognize that leadership on this year’s 2011 squad is impeccable and one without hesitation better than any other I have had during my time here at JSU. Pelletier and Bielaga have been outstanding leaders both in their vision, fairness, willingness to compete, fitness and academic success. I would personally like to take this moment and say to them, Thank You. Thank you for all the memories, the commitment, the blood, sweat and tears that you have given this program throughout its Chelsea Pelletier entirety. After three years in the making, I look to you both to take this program and this team to another level.
Goalkeepers Goalkeeping is a position that should shape up well for the Gamecocks. Coming back from another strong sophomore year, Junior Goalkeeper Ali Koenig looks to solidify her starting position. Koenig, (2x OVC Goalkeeper of the Week in 2009 and 1x OVC Goalkeeper of the Week in 2010), continues to show that she will come up big in a tight situation and make the key saves to keep her team in games. Koenig is a great shot stopper and holds the players in front of her accountable. Junior Goalkeeper, Katelyn Geddings continues to show a lot of improvement. She is coming off of shoulder surgery following the 2010 season. She missed the entire spring with her rehab. Since the start of
4
preseason, she has begun to emerge back to her true self and the true potential we have believed in her to have. We expect to see great things from her now. Her distribution is a weapon. And her strength in the air will be very important against certain teams. The competition between Koenig and Geddings is something to write about. I have found the most interesting thing about their relationship throughout their time here is that they are better united as one. With this being said, I will be seeing them both be great assets to our success this year as they each bring something solid and strong to this team. They give us experience, balance and a measure of strategy in ways we can manage a game using their abilities as players within their strengths that define them.
Defenders Young but resilient describes the character of our defense. The ring leader is Central Defender, Emily Bielaga. She will hold the foundation of this unit and bring them to life. Bielaga continues to lead her team through her commitment and desire to pursue the program’s first OVC Championship. Freshmen, Jessica Monahan, Brianna Salverda and Kaitlyn Gregory are key players in developing this young resilient defense. We are looking for them to bring energy, passion and composure to a defense that is expected to execute quickly and be disciplined Emily Bielaga in their roles. Other key players that could emerge into this defense are Junior, Nicole Vickery and Freshman, Kelsey Robertson. Both these players came to the program as attackers. They are being looked at in fullback positions because of their attacking mentality and willingness to go forward. Depth will be an essential piece to our success and these ladies bring quality depth along with their distribution ability and athleticism.
MIDFIELDERS Junior midfielders, Katie Manns and Austen Stoelting return to provide us with a physical presence. Freshmen, Courtney Hurt and Senior, Lindsay Boehmler will look to share the role of attacking midfielder. We will look to them to play make and create goal scoring opportunities in
2011 Soccer Media Guide
Quoting Head Coach Julie Davis Carlson FORWARDS This is a much different team mentality wise when it comes to our attack for 2011. The key players are no strangers to what needs to get accomplished. Senior, Chelsea Pelletier and Juniors Nathalee Lariviere and Eli Arthur lead this campaign and will make their mark with their tenacious characteristics and experience to help lead our offense. Arthur and Lariviere continue to show great promise in their ability to attack down the flanks. We are starting to see their hard work and development come to life. Lindsay Boehmler
Millie Parekh
the final third. In addition to these midfielders still working hard behind the scenes making an impact are Junior, Danielle Miller, Freshman, Daisy Allen and Taylor Mitchell. Miller, Allen and Mitchell will be future key players in our ability to possess and control the ball to link our midfield to the front and back lines. Senior, Millie Parekh, is coming back for her first preseason healthy after a battle with knee injuries. She will bring us leadership, focus and heart to her final senior campaign. Junior, Julia Binnicker and Freshman, Fallon Vaughan are also in the mix and could pace other players for time in the defensive midfield positions.
Pelletier started all 18 games last season and with her extreme work Nathalee Lariviere ethic has all but dominated the stats chart. Junior, Myla Senff, who sees time at the Center Forward role behind Pelletier, has really stepped up, improved her fitness and shown her desire to make a difference. In addition to the these returners, Freshmen, Lindsay Jackson and Jackie Rush and Newcomer, 5th year Senior, Martina Dessbesell have been impressive in preseason and will vie for playing time this season. They will be major contributors, have been stiff competition at practice and be strong impact players behind our returning force.

Gamecocks with a Purpose
A Vision for the Future from Head Coach Julie Davis Carlson Tradition. Jacksonville State University women’s soccer provides a learning atmosphere that enables each student to maximize her potential. This program seeks to maintain this environment as well as give it a unique, leadership-oriented, disciplined and committed surrounding. This program will seek out the female student-athlete that is looking for a challenge greater than themselves in order to become better students, players and most importantly women. It should be true to tradition for each student-athlete is to represent JSU with the utmost professionalism. Excellence. Excellence is not perfection. Excellence is the pursuit of perfection. Every JSU Women’s Soccer student-athlete must commit to excellence in the following areas: Academics. Each student-athlete strives for the relentless pursuit to become a better student and meet the imposed demands of a collegiate academic environment. Each studentathlete accepts responsibility and seeking out opportunity for the cultivation of personal education and professional options post graduation. Athletics. Each student-athlete strives for the relentless pursuit of personal player development. Each student-athlete is in constant evaluation of personal and team effort, attitude, and competitiveness on the training field, in the weight room and on the game field. Commitment. Each student-athlete understands that the environment is incessantly changing; therefore, commitment to discipline, professionalism, fitness, mental perseverance and selflessness is paramount for complete development of each individual to become successful young adults. In the pursuit of success in excellence, each athlete makes a realization that this journey and the effort to act on it will require each female to be the student, athlete and women they choose to be. A Winning Edge. A winning edge is something that is developed over time through cultivating leadership within a team atmosphere. A winning edge comes from not recruiting the ‘best’ players but recruiting the ‘right’ ones. Development of a winning mentality is seen through yearround player commitment to recognize their strengths, their teammate’s strengths, team characteristics and team strengths. There are three principles that begin this process: Respect, Responsibility and Strength Identification.
Here at JSU Soccer, our players respect each other with the utmost integrity. Self respect must be taken on as with a proactive response by each player in order for them to seek out success. Each JSU soccer player takes responsibility for themselves and for each other. We do not focus on weaknesses but strengths. Our players identify their strengths and capitalize on them. Each and every one of us is different and we must accept those who are different from us. These principles are seen in personality, culture, ethnic background, athletic ability and attitude. We begin with the principle of respect because every athlete should respect themselves first and then one another and each staff member, and each staff member should be respectful. Each team member will recognize their responsibilities by identifying their individual roles within the team. Each team member will recognize her strengths as well as her teammates. These are identified to provide each team member an identity of whom they are and what they can positively provide to the team to make their team successful. In the fall of 2010, JSU women’s soccer will take on a new journey within its instilled honor and integrity onto the playing field to compete with any opponent on any given day. Our philosophy is unique in its own and continues to be developed
each and everyday through its intended purpose - for JSU women’s soccer to be successful in a manner that each studentathlete holds to a higher standard of personal and professional excellence. JSU soccer’s future holds for them a unique system of values and goals that will not go unrecognized by each team member. This new journey in 2010 is evolving in hopes to create another facet to each of these student-athlete’s lives. A lifestyle of leadership and personal aspiration is one that impacts the life of one who achieves greatness.

Making a Difference in the Community Little doubt can be said about the JSU Soccer program investing their commitment to making a difference in their community. On the verge of working to develop a winning tradition, JSU Soccer is already winning in making a difference in the communities with which they are invested. Behind the leadership of fifth year head coach, Julie Davis Carlson and assistant coach, Andy Swift, the JSU Soccer program has become a leader in the Jacksonville, Ala., as well as reaching into other areas of Calhoun County to help advance the development of soccer in the community. Throughout the existence of the JSU Soccer program since its inaugural beginning in 1995, current players and JSU Soccer Alumni are involving themselves within communities not only in the sport that they appreciate so much but in the medical and educational field. 2006 graduate, Ashley Smith and 2000 graduate, Wendy Holleman work effectively in their communities coaching soccer at the club level. JSU Soccer graduates, Kristin Fleeger and Angela Tribble are making a difference in the aiding to those in need as nurses in trauma in Houston, Texas and at children’s medical center in Birmingham, Ala., 2005 graduate and OVC All-conference goalkeeper, Amanda Stephens, is pursuing her PhD at NC State in researching peanut allergies. 2006 graduate, Christina Balint found herself in Korea teaching the English language. Most recent graduate of 2009, Kate Kelly is pursuing a medical career at UAB Medical Center. These are just a few of many graduates from the JSU Soccer program that are working to make a difference.
representative at the NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Conference this summer of 2009. “We are looking for her to run for SAAC president for the 2009-10 academic years,” Coach Carlson shared. Back in 2008, JSU hosted for the first time in the program’s history, the U-17 Mexican Women’s National Team. The night was an acclaimed success by getting over 500 fans to attend what became a very excited, enthusiastic and cultural experience for the players, coaching staff and the community of Jacksonville. Various members of the soccer team have been and continue to take part in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes offered at the university. JSU Soccer will continue to involve themselves in donating their time to reading to the students, canned food drives, oncampus peer educators, camps and clinics within the county. “We will always stay in touch with our players’ opportunities to help grow the sport of soccer in this area as well as help those in need that are less fortunate,” Carlson said. “Our players will continue to learn from these experiences the value of their education and its impact not only in Jacksonville, Alabama but worldwide.”
“JSU is very proud of its Alumni and all that they work for to make a difference in the lives of others.” JSU head coach Julie Carlson said. “These are stories we like to share about how great the quality of the individuals that have come through this program over the years and their ability to enhance not only their life but those around them.” On the soccer front, Carlson has continued to emphasize to her players the importance of being ambassadors for the sport they love. The Ohio Valley Conference Entering its 64th year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference.
World War II, but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC.
In May 2011 the Conference expanded for the second time in four years, adding Belmont University which will begin competition in the 2012-13 academic year. The addition of Belmont will give the OVC 12 members, the most the league has had at one time in its illustrious history. The move added a second team in the city of Nashville and was the first addition to the league since Southern Illinois University Edwardsville joined in 2008. SIUE will begin regular season competition this season (2011-12) and be eligible for postseason the same year Belmont joins the league.
The playing field is not the only place where OVC athletes are working hard. The league also recognizes excellence in the classroom. Six ScholarAthlete Awards are presented yearly to male and female athletes, while others are commended for their academic success by being Medal of Honor recipients or earning a spot on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Additionally, the league annually presents one institutional Academic Achievement Award, as well as separate team awards in each Conference-sponsored sport. The vision of leadership demonstrated by the Founding Fathers in 1948 remains alive today as the Ohio Valley Conference prepares for the future. One example is in regard to the current trend in collegiate athletics administration for increased involvement of university presidents in setting policies and making rules. The presidents of OVC institutions, however, have always governed the Conference, long before presidential governance became a national theme. The Ohio Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors the combined men’s and women’s sport of rifle. Now in its seventh decade of competition, the Ohio Valley Conference has grown significantly from its humble beginnings while increasing the number of athletics opportunities it provides for students. Current league representatives include charter members Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University and Murray State University, along with Austin Peay State University, Eastern Illinois University, Jacksonville State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin. Belmont University will become the league’s 12th member on July 1, 2012.

Why we are the gamecocks “Go Eagle Owls!” would be the resounding cry from Paul Snow Stadium today if ardent fans hadn’t decided 50 years ago that the school mascot should be a bird of a different feather. Jacksonville State University’s first football team was fielded in the late 1800’s and nicknamed in honor of a rare predatory bird found near the Arctic circle. The exact details are lost to history, but a group of fans decided it was hard for the school’s image to soar like an eagle if the team’s name was something of a turkey. People like E.C. Wilson, Bruce Chase and Charles Sprayberry felt a more collegiate-sounding moniker would be more appropriate.

Along with the new name came new colors. The blue and gold were tossed out in favor of the familiar red and white worn by the area high school players.
Fighting Gamecocks took to the field for the first time. And, as is true to the nature of the warlike bird itself, the football team and other athletes fought their way to respectability in intercollegiate ranks - eventually bringing home a national championship in every major sport.
The story goes that there were two camps - those who wanted to keep the Eagle Owl nickname and those who wanted new colors. Legend has it that a compromise was worked out; new colors for a new mascot. It was all worked out by 1947 when the
The supporters looked to Southern culture rather than the north pole to symbolize the school’s tough spirit. Tongue firmly planted in beak, Gamecock supporters crowed the loudest, and the University found itself with a new identity: a mascot familiar to everyone, including the farm boys who comprised most of the student body back then. For nearly a half-century – up until 1946 – the fledgling Eagle Owls hooted with pride from the scanty facilities adjacent to the field at John Forney National Guard Armory.
The State Normal School (SNS) team was sparse by today’s standards, but the gridiron action was competitive from the start. Present day rivalries such as Samford (Howard College) and Troy State were rooted in those early games. The team had only 23 players when SNS was renamed Jacksonville

“We are very excited to have someone with the experience of Mr. Koegel to lead our athletics department,” said University President Dr. William A. The History From modest beginnings, Jacksonville State University has evolved into the educational center of Northeast Alabama. The Alabama Legislature in the 1882-83 session created a state normal school when Governor Edward O’Neal signed into law a bill creating the school on February 22, 1883. Jacksonville State Normal School acquired the facilities and equipment of Calhoun College, consisting of 12 acres of land and a two-story brick building. The Board of Directors elected James G. Ryals, Jr., as the first president. The school opened with three instructors: W. J. Borden, Mathematics; Eliza A. Bowen, English; and Ida J. Woodward, primary department. As stipulated in the establishing act, the Normal School administered a preparatory school for children of the town and surrounding areas. At the end of the first year, on August 15, 1884, William Mark Hames, President of the Board of Directors, reported that funds totaling
$4,751.25 had been received, including $2,500 from the state; that 25 students were enrolled in the normal school; and that 222 were in the preparatory school.
The Normal School remained in operation until 1930, when it became Jacksonville State Teachers College. Five years later, the College earned regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The name again changed to Jacksonville State College in 1957 when the first graduate program—the master’s degree in elementary education—was created. On August 2, 1966, the Legislature authorized the State Board of Education to elevate the College to university status. On August 17, 1967, the Legislature established an independent Board of Trustees for the University and divested jurisdiction from the State Board of Education.
Jacksonville State University has been served by 11 presidents: James G. Ryals, Jr. (188385), J. Harris Chappell (1885-86), Carleton Bartlett Gibson (1886-92), J. B. Jarrett (189293), Jacob Forney IV (1893-99), Clarence William Daugette (1899-1942), Houston Cole (1942-71), Ernest Stone (1971-81), Theron E. Montgomery (1981-86), Harold J. McGee (1986-99), and William A. Meehan (1999-present).
Jacksonville State University has developed into a modern regional university serving Northeast Alabama on a 392-acre campus with 63 buildings. In addition, the University operates an off-campus center in Gadsden and videoconferencing sites throughout Alabama and Northwest Georgia. Through its programs of teaching, research, and service, Jacksonville State University has served the region and state for more than 100 years.
Academic Affairs JSU seeks to be recognized as the premier regional, comprehensive institution of higher learning in the Southeast. We aspire to be noted primarily for our focus on students, the
provision of selected academic and professional programs recognized for their excellence, and a geographic and culturally diverse faculty and student body. Our educational programs are
