Quoting Head Coach Julie Davis Carlson
A position-by-position outlook for the 2012 Gamecocks Goalkeepers
“An offensive threat defines this year’s competitive cauldron. Last year, we dominated the defensive territory by giving up fewer goals, taking opponents into overtime matches and staying within a one-goal difference of beating our opponents. With the return of nine seniors and seven sophomores, 16 players with seasonal experience bring this year’s squad ever more hopeful. Along with the 16 returning players, we have seven newcomers that will bring personality, creativity, hardness and depth to this veteran packed squad.”
“Returning All-OVC Second Team starting goalkeeper, Katelyn Geddings, must remain focused in her training and with her fitness to continue to establish the respect she earned last year. With returning 2009 All-OVC Goalkeeper, Ali Koenig, back in action following her knee injury sustained early last year, pressure is rising in the goalkeeping area for playing time; along with newcomer, Taylor Hammond who had a stellar high school career. They are all looking to make a name for themselves this fall. This string of players presents competition, depth and a quality of teamwork Katelyn Geddings that must be brought into their training arena to develop each other to be tougher, stronger and more confident.”
The Outlook
THE Outlook
“We have new leadership joining the ranks with Team Captains, Austen Katie Manns Stoelting and Katie Manns. Both impact players and returning starters have already changed the perception and established their respect on and off the field. Along with Stoelting and Manns, this senior squad defines JSU Soccer in this year’s team with a simple message: they want to leave their mark.”
The Impact of Experience and Veteran Leadership “With the graduation of former senior captains and starters, Chelsea Pelletier and Emily Bielaga, what remains is the foundation they left as captains for the last 3 years. This foundation begins where our new leadership begins. Under new direction of this year’s senior captains, Katie Manns and Austen Stoelting along with remaining 7 members of this 2012 senior class they cannot be more ready and have more power to impose a mark on their last season. Senior midfield Captains, Katie Manns and Austen Stoelting remain a solid back bone to this team and their on-field experience and success will play an instrumental role in defining their leadership strength on and off the field. They must carry the weight of not only leading a large senior class but the team as a whole. They have shown great charisma, enthusiasm and dedication to be tough, work hard and take charge of what they want to achieve this year to everyone.”
4
Defenders “Experienced…yes, but still young. With the departure of Senior Captain, Emily Bielaga, returning starter, Brianna Salverda will have some big shoes to fill. She is being looked upon to take on that organizational leadership role in the defensive back 4. Incoming freshmen, Sydney Keller, recruited to play central defense will be asked to take on a starting role with little experience and become a strong and solid defender quickly. Rotating outside defenders returning are Kaitlyn Gregory, Jessica Monahan and Julia Binnicker. Newcomers competing in these positions as well are Katt Dowd and Nicole Heiser. Each of these outside defenders has shown athleticism, toughness and coach ability. The long line of defenders will give us quality depth as well as young promising potential this year and for years to come.”

Austen Stoelting
MIDFIELDERS “Senior midfielders, Katie Manns, Austen Stoelting and Dani Miller provide us with experience, physicality and dominance in the air at the defensive midfield positions. Returners, Jackie Rush and Myla Senff along with freshman, Alexis Rodriguez will enable us to be dominate in the air with an attacking presence, dominate physically going forward and finish from long range. The depth of this central midfield should orchestrate the tempo of the game, connecting defensive and offensive lines of the field and develop a quality attacking game out of midfield. The quality of depth established by these players provides us with solid rotation throughout the season.”
“The forward line put together is an exciting one. Creativity, exceptional work ethic and the ability to show they can score goals is being seen throughout preseason. Seniors, Nathalee Lariviere and Eli Arthur, have so far brought speed, 1v1 artistry and tenacity to get in front of goal. Returning sophomores, Courtney Hurt and Lindsey Jackson are bringing back speed, physicality, determination, skill and proven goal scoring ability. Adding to these threats, are newcomers Brianna Boutziouvis and Kelsey Bright. Boutziouvis, Ottawa native, has Nathalee Lariviere shown great ability to possess the ball in the final third, finishing ability and deceptive mobility on and off the ball. Bright, a Houston, Texas native, has shown her speed to get behind defenders, composure and her ability to finish anywhere in the 18 yard box. With 6 players all making up a 3 front offensive line, our forward rotation will be able to remain dominant. They have been extremely exciting to watch in preseason and have brought confidence to our attacking success.”

Gamecocks with a Purpose
A Vision for the Future from Head Coach Julie Davis Carlson Tradition. Jacksonville State University women’s soccer provides a learning atmosphere that enables each student to maximize her potential. This program seeks to maintain this environment as well as give it a unique, leadership-oriented, disciplined and committed surrounding. This program will seek out the female studentathlete that is looking for a challenge greater than themselves in order to become better students, players and most importantly women. It should be true to tradition for each studentathlete to represent JSU with the utmost professionalism. Excellence. Excellence is not perfection. Excellence is the pursuit of perfection. Every JSU Women’s Soccer student-athlete must commit to excellence in the following areas: Academics. Each student-athlete strives for the relentless pursuit to become a better student and meet the imposed demands of a collegiate academic environment. Each student-athlete accepts responsibility and seeking out opportunity for the cultivation of personal education and professional options post graduation. Athletics. Each student-athlete strives for the relentless pursuit of personal player development. Each student-athlete is in constant evaluation of personal and team effort, atti-
tude, and competitiveness in the classroom, in the weight room and on the game field. Commitment. Each student-athlete understands that the environment is incessantly changing; therefore, commitment to discipline, professionalism, fitness, mental perseverance and selflessness is paramount for complete development of each individual to become successful young adults. In the pursuit of success in excellence, each athlete makes a realization that this journey and the effort to act on it will require each female to be the student, athlete and women they choose to be. A Winning Edge. A winning edge is something that is developed over time through cultivating leadership within a team atmosphere. A winning edge comes from not recruiting the ‘best’ players but recruiting the ‘right’ ones. Development of a winning mentality is seen through year-round player commitment to recognize their strengths, their teammate’s strengths, team characteristics and team strengths. There are three principles that begin this process: Respect, Responsibility and Strength Identification.
In the fall of 2012, JSU women’s soccer will take on a new journey within its instilled honor and integrity onto the playing field to compete with any opponent on any given day. Our philosophy is unique in its own and continues to be developed each and
Here at JSU Soccer, our players respect each other with the utmost integrity. Self respect must be taken on as with a proactive response by each player in order for them to seek out success. Each JSU soccer player takes responsibility for themselves and for each other. We do not focus on weaknesses but strengths. Our players identify their strengths and capitalize on them. Each and every one of us is different and we must accept those who are different from us. These principles are seen in personality, culture, ethnic back-
ground, athletic ability and attitude. We begin with the principle of respect because every athlete should respect themselves first and then one another and each staff member, and each staff member should be respectful. Each team member will recognize

their responsibilities by identifying their individual roles within the team. Each team member will recognize her strengths as well as her teammates. These are identified to provide each team member an identity of who they are and what they can positively provide to the team to make their team successful.

everyday through its intended purpose - for JSU women’s soccer to be successful in a manner that each student-athlete holds to a higher standard of personal and professional excellence. JSU soccer’s future holds for them a unique system of values and goals that will not go unrecognized by each team member. This new journey in 2012 is evolving in hopes to create another facet to each of these student-athlete’s lives. A lifestyle of leadership and personal aspiration is one that impacts the life of one who achieves greatness.
Involved Gamecocks
Making a Difference in the Community Little doubt can be said about the JSU Soccer program investing their commitment to making a difference in their community. On the verge of working to develop a winning tradition, JSU Soccer is already winning in making a difference in the communities with which they are invested. Behind the leadership of eighth year head coach, Julie Davis Carlson and assistant coach, Andy Swift, the JSU Soccer program has become a leader in the Jacksonville, Ala., as well as reaching into other areas of Calhoun County to help advance the development of soccer in the community. Throughout the existence of the JSU Soccer program since its inaugural beginning in 1995, current players and JSU Soccer Alumni are involving themselves within communities not only in the sport that they appreciate so much but in the medical and educational field. 2006 graduate, Ashley Smith and 2000 graduate, Wendy Holleman work effectively in their communities coaching soccer at the club level. JSU Soccer graduates, Kristin Fleeger and Angela Tribble are making a difference in the aiding to those in need as nurses in trauma in Houston, Texas and at children’s medical center in Birmingham, Ala., 2005 graduate and OVC All-conference goalkeeper, Amanda Stephens, is pursuing her PhD at NC State in researching peanut allergies. 2006 graduate, Christina Balint found herself in Korea teaching the English
language. Most recent graduate of 2009, Kate Kelly is pursuing a medical career at UAB Medical Center. These are just a few of many graduates from the JSU Soccer program that are working to make a difference. “JSU is very proud of its Alumni and all that they work for to make a difference in the lives of others.” JSU head coach Julie Carlson said. “These are stories we like to share about how great the quality of the individuals that have come through this program over the years and their ability to enhance not only their life but those around them.”
players, coaching staff and the community of Jacksonville. Various members of the soccer team have been and continue to take part in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes offered at the university. JSU Soccer will continue to involve themselves in donating their time to reading to the students, canned food drives, oncampus peer educators, camps and clinics within the county. “We will always stay in touch with our players’ opportunities to help grow the sport of soccer in this area as well as help those in need that are less fortunate,” Carlson said. “Our players will continue to learn from these experiences the value of their education and its impact not only in Jacksonville, Alabama but worldwide.”
On the soccer front, Carlson has continued to emphasize to her players the importance of being ambassadors for the sport they love. Former Gamecock Chelsea Pelletier served as an ambassador for JSU athletics as our student-athlete representative at the NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Conference in 2009. Pelletier led as SAAC President at JSU and for the OVC in 2010 and 2011. She became the NCAA SAAC Media representative in 2011. Back in 2008, JSU hosted for the first time in the program’s history, the U-17 Mexican Women’s National Team. The night was an acclaimed success by getting over 500 fans to attend what became a very excited, enthusiastic and cultural experience for the

Julie Davis CARLSON The 2012 season marks the eighth year for Julie Davis Carlson at the helm of the Jacksonville State Women’s Soccer program. Davis Carlson accepted the head coaching position in June of 2005 after two seasons at VMI and has had the Gamecock program on a steady rise since.
On the field since, JSU has had multiple All-Ohio Valley Conference performers. Christina Balint earned Second-Team All-OVC honors in 2006 before Courtney Moore in 2007 and Chelsea Pelletier in 2008 earned First-Team laurels. Pelletier became the first player in JSU soccer history to be named FirstTeam All-OVC and to the OVC Newcomer squad in the same season. In 2008, the Gamecocks had four OVC Players of the Week. Kate Kelly earned Goalkeeper of the Week honors two times while Chelsea Pelletier earned Defensive Player of the Week and Lindsay Boehmler was Offensive Player of the Week. In 2011, Jax State’s Pelletier and Katelyn Geddings were named to the Second Team All-Conference squads. Pelletier led the Gamecocks in scoring chances, while Geddings led the OVC in saves and ranked among the nation’s Division I leaders in that statistical category. A trademark of Carlson’s squads is the high marks set in the classroom. Her 2011 squad was once again honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America with a Team Academic Award and claimed the OVC’s Academic Achievement Award for 2011-12. A total of five soccer student-athletes earned OVC Medal of Honors (4.0 GPA), while 19 of the 26 players on the 2011 squad were placed on the 2011-12 OVC Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll, which led all of JSU’s athletic teams. In 2011-12, the JSU soccer program posted a team grade point average of 3.577. Carlson’s teams have also been active in the community over the years in Jacksonville as they host many clinics throughout the year. During the 2010 campaign, Jax State had three players selected for one of the league’s weekly awards. Emily Bielaga and Alyshia Madison claimed the defensive award in consecutive weeks respectively, while Ali Koenig was tabbed the goal keeper of the week for her performance in the second week of the season. The Gamecocks have also had shining moments off the field two with 44 players earning Academic All-OVC honors since 2005, including three national academic awards. In 2007-08, Davis Carlson’s squad was one of five teams from the OVC to earn the Team Academic Award for excellence in the class-

room from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America with a cumulative 3.11 GPA. In 200607 alone, Christina Balint and Elizabeth Selasky garnered NSCAA AllAcademic honors and the 2007 team received the NSCAA Team Ethics Award of Merit. The 2010 squad added to the program’s Coach Carlson classroom success as it was garnered the program’s fifth NSCAA Women’s Team Academic Award. A trio of Gamecocks were also named to the coaching organization’s Scholar All-South Region Team – Pelletier, Debbie Matich and Bielaga. Pelletier was also named the OVC’s top scholar athlete for the 2009-10 athletic year. The Fort Worth, Texasnative was also included on the CoSIDA ESPN Academic All-District Women’s Soccer District 4 Second Team. Davis Carlson’s head coaching career began in 2003 when she took on the task of building the VMI women’s soccer program from the ground up. Davis Carlson led a limited group of 14 women to a fourwin season in the school’s first season of varsity competition. The following year she led VMI into it first season of competition in the Big South and coached Colleen Redmond to All-Big South honors while Redmond and Vanessa Berrios earned Big South AllAcademic honors. Through the years, Davis Carlson has been dedicated to growing the game of soccer in the areas where she has coached and has been highly involved in the Olympic Development program. She has been working with the 95 Girls Alabama ODP State team coach since 2008 and has been on the coaching staff of the US Soccer Region II squad for the last seven seasons. Davis Carlson’s collegiate coaching career began shortly after graduating from Wright State in 1997. Her first Division I coaching job came at Miami (Ohio), where the program was in its first season of competition. There Davis Carlson was asked to not only help establish the women’s program, but to have a hand in coaching the men’s team as well. Davis Carlson also took on the title of Assistant Tournament Director for the for the Mid-American Conference Men’s Championships. In 1999, she moved on to serve as an assistant coach

Behind her leadership, the team posted a 7-4-1 record as the squad traveled through Sweden, Denmark and England. The Ohio Valley Conference Now in its 65th year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference.
In the 1950s, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale socially. During times of racial segregation, league member Morehead State became one of the first non-traditionally black mid-southern institutions to accept a black student. the nation, and has answered the challenge of the NCAA Presidents Commission to improve sportsmanship in collegiate athletics. The vision of leadership demonstrated by the Founding Fathers in 1948 remains alive today as the Ohio Valley Conference prepares for the future. One example is in regard to the current trend in collegiate athletics administration for increased involvement of university presidents in setting policies and making rules. The presidents of OVC institutions, however, have always governed the Conference, long before presidential governance became a national theme. The Ohio Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors the combined men’s and women’s sport of rifle. Now in its seventh decade of competition, the Ohio Valley Conference has grown significantly from its humble beginnings while increasing the number of athletics opportunities it provides for students. Current league representatives include charter members Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University and Murray State University, along with Austin Peay State University, Belmont University, Eastern Illinois University, Jacksonville State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Why we are the gamecocks “Go Eagle Owls!” would be the resounding cry from Paul Snow Stadium today if ardent fans hadn’t decided 50 years ago that the school mascot should be a bird of a different feather. Jacksonville State University’s first football team was fielded in the late 1800’s and nicknamed in honor of a rare predatory bird found near the Arctic circle. The exact details are lost to history, but a group of fans decided it was hard for the school’s image to soar like an eagle if the team’s name was something of a turkey. People like E.C. Wilson, Bruce Chase and Charles Sprayberry felt a more collegiate-sounding moniker would be more appropriate.
The team had only 23 players when SNS was renamed Jacksonville Teachers College in 1946, with Head Coach Don Salls beginning his first season, but there was a “big school” atmosphere developing in the foothills. Along with the new name came new colors. The blue and gold were tossed out in favor of the familiar red and white worn by the area high school players. The story goes that there were two camps - those who wanted to keep the Eagle Owl nickname and those who wanted new colors. Legend has it that a compromise was worked out; new colors for a new mascot.
The supporters looked to Southern culture rather than the north pole to symbolize the school’s tough spirit. Tongue firmly planted in beak, Gamecock supporters crowed the loudest, and the University found itself with a new identity: a mascot familiar to everyone, including the farm boys who comprised most of the student body back then. For nearly a half-century – up until 1946 – the fledgling Eagle Owls hooted with pride from the scanty facilities adjacent to the field at John Forney National Guard Armory. The State Normal School (SNS) team was sparse by today’s standards, but the gridiron action was competitive from the start. Present day rivalries such as Samford (Howard College) and Troy State were rooted in those early games.

It was all worked out by 1947 when the Fighting Gamecocks took to the field for the first time. And, as is true to the nature of the warlike bird itself, the football team and other athletes fought their way to respectability in intercollegiate ranks - eventually bringing home a national championship in every major sport.

The History From modest beginnings, Jacksonville State University has evolved into the educational center of Northeast Alabama. The Alabama Legislature in the 1882-83 session created a state normal school when Governor Edward O’Neal signed into law a bill creating the school on February 22, 1883. Jacksonville State Normal School acquired the facilities and equipment of Calhoun College, consisting of 12 acres of land and a two-story brick building. The Board of Directors elected James G. Ryals, Jr., as the first president. The school opened with three instructors: W. J. Borden, Mathematics; Eliza A. Bowen, English; and Ida J. Woodward, primary department. As stipulated in the establishing act, the Normal School administered a preparatory school for children of the town and surrounding areas. At the end of the first year, on August 15, 1884, William Mark Hames, President of the Board of Directors, reported that funds totaling
$4,751.25 had been received, including $2,500 from the state; that 25 students were enrolled in the normal school; and that 222 were in the preparatory school.
The Normal School remained in operation until 1930, when it became Jacksonville State Teachers College. Five years later, the College earned regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The name again changed to Jacksonville State College in 1957 when the first graduate program—the master’s degree in elementary education—was created. On August 2, 1966, the Legislature authorized the State Board of Education to elevate the College to university status. On August 17, 1967, the Legislature established an independent Board of Trustees for the University and divested jurisdiction from the State Board of Education.
Jacksonville State University has been served by 11 presidents: James G. Ryals, Jr. (188385), J. Harris Chappell (1885-86), Carleton Bartlett Gibson (1886-92), J. B. Jarrett (189293), Jacob Forney IV (1893-99), Clarence William Daugette (1899-1942), Houston Cole (1942-71), Ernest Stone (1971-81), Theron E. Montgomery (1981-86), Harold J. McGee (1986-99), and William A. Meehan (1999-present).
Jacksonville State University has developed into a modern regional university serving Northeast Alabama on a 392-acre campus with 63 buildings. In addition, the University operates an off-campus center in Gadsden and videoconferencing sites throughout Alabama and Northwest Georgia. Through its programs of teaching, research, and service, Jacksonville State University has served the region and state for more than 100 years.
Academic Affairs JSU seeks to be recognized as the premier regional, comprehensive institution of higher learning in the Southeast. We aspire to be noted primarily for our focus on students, the
provision of selected academic and professional programs recognized for their excellence, and a geographic and culturally diverse faculty and student body. Our educational programs are
