HAIR STORY #1
SMILE
A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
I have always been fascinated with magazines. They gave me things to aspire to. When I was a boy, it was automobile magazines; when I was an apprentice hairdresser, American fashion magazines showed me a world I dreamed of being a part of; looking at Diana Vreeland’s Vogue was an essential part of my education. When I came to New York in the ’70s to start Bumble and bumble and needed press, I sent photographs of our work to a few magazines; it was Vogue that first gave us a small write-up, and it wasn’t long until I was working with editors at most of the major titles. This magazine doesn’t promise to be everything to everyone. Rather, like all good magazines, it does promise a considered point of view by experts on a subject, in this case hairdressing. Hairstory is the name of this magazine and the name of our company because we all have stories about our hair that bookmark our lives – the first barbering, the school pictures, the Mullet, the Farrow, the Farrah, the Hamill, the Rachel, the home experiments – universal experiences that leave emotional imprints and shape us.
Hairstory Studio is where we create products that are revolutionizing the craft by changing preconceptions about how to clean hair and take care of it while also reducing needless waste, execute our marketing and design, and cut, color and style a modest number of loyal clients. What is most unusual is the time and energy we devote to creating original content by recruiting people from New York City, transforming their hair and shooting their portraits. The best of them during the past year is showcased here.
While the web and social media creates fantastic opportunities to spread our message, and we owe whatever success we’ve achieved so far to it, there’s nothing like a physical object to hold, linger on, and contemplate; in the era of insta-, it’s comforting to have something perma-. We hope you find it worth far more than the paper it’s printed on, and of course, if you’re not already a fan we invite you to follow us on Hairstory.com and join a revolution in hairdressing. ROSE GOLD 50 years ago, cars were made in all kinds of colors to choose from. Today, most of them are black, white or silver. Haircolor has followed a similar path – you’d think three-quarters of modern women were born blonde. The problem is that most of them either shouldn’t be blonde in the first place, or were given the wrong shade – too brassy, too light, too dark, highlighted as if by machine, not sophisticated, stunning, nor suitable. The world is made of a staggering number of colors, dusky, smoky, or subtle to vibrant, florescent, or iridescent. Lipstick companies create endless variations of red; nail polish now offers a far broader palette than ever. It is time to expand the possibilities for hair as well, and color sorceress Roxie Darling has made this her mission. Inspired by the southwestern desert and her collection of mid-century carnival glass, she demonstrates here that even a small slice of the color wheel has infinite variety.

CAT THE YEAR OF THE
The prevailing attitude about hair length is that if you cut it short you’ll be forever caught in transitional limbo trying to
grow it out again. But Cat’s year long experimentation with cut and color disproves the theory with these twelve looks that are anything but transitional – each is an end in itself. The moral
of her hairstory is that timid choices rarely pay off. So be bold – you’ve got nothing to lose but some hair.

THE WOMAN WHO
THE EARTH
Marina is a model who recently fell to New York from her native Serbia. She arrived at Hairstory Studio one day to have her color done, and her otherworldly beauty mesmerized us all. Stylist Tony Kelley was so taken with her that he conceived a shoot inspired by the 1976 film The Man Who Fell to Earth starring David Bowie
as
an

who crash lands seeking a way to ship water to his drought-ridden planet. This hairstory follows Marina from isolation to assimilation,

KELLY’S HAIRSTORY “A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life,” said Coco Chanel. We not only agree with that statement; it could easily be the Hairstory raison d’etre. We knew we were on the right track when we went from scouring the streets for volunteer models to being inundated by requests via social media. The fact is that we have an amazing team of artists focused on making each subject feel comfortable enough to venture outside their comfort zone and discover how great they can look – and feel – without forcing them to become someone they’re not. It happens time after time; we watched Kelly arrive at the studio wondering exactly what she had signed up for, unused to the attention and scrutiny. As the day went on she saw herself transform; her confidence bloomed and her inner model came out to play in front of the camera.
