Project 1
Minimal Letterforms Summary: In order to better understand the visual characteris-
tics of a specific typeface, choose four different letters to create a composition exploring the various design elements and principles, sucha s form/counterform, balance, and juxtaposition.
Media: Adobe Creative Suite, Illustrator Materials & Format: Black and white print on high quality paper First 11 Designs
Trim and flush mount to 11 x 14” Bristol Margins: 1.275” left and right, 1.875” top Four 4” squares (two on top, two on bottom) with 1/4” gaps inbetween
Process: To become familiar with the typefaces and forms, I Narrowed Down Drafts

began tracing each letter onto multiple 1x1” thumbnail sketches. After going through the alphabet multiple times, I chose three letterforms and experimented with the their unique characteristics: Memphis, Helvetic, and Friz Quadrata. I created these sketches on 4x4” thumbnails. For my final presentation, I used the letters ‘m’, ‘s’, ‘w’, and ‘e’ in the font Memphis, recreating my thumbnail sketch on Adobe Illustrator.

Project 2
Type Hierarchy Studies Summary: Given hypothetical design lecture series information,
and the limitations of the Univers typeface, create three sets of typographical compositions demonstrating type hierarchy and organization.. Utilize the design principles to create visually appealing arrangements, but legibility holds priority.
Media: Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign
Materials & Format: Trim and flush mount 10 x 10 high quality print on
Set 1A Variations
Bristol Set 1: A. One size / one weight (15 pt. Univers 45) B. One size / two weights (15 pt. Univers 45 and 65) Set 2: A. Two sizes / two weights (15 pt. and 9pt. Univers 45 and 65) B. Two sizes / two weights / two styles (15 pt. and 9pt. Univers 45, 45 Oblique, 65, and 65 Oblique) Set 3: A. Two sizes / two weights / two styles (15 pt. and 9pt. Univers 45, 45 Oblique, 65, and 65 Oblique) & rules B. Any size, weight and style of Univers
Process: My first step was cutting out strips of paper with the
given information and arrange it in such a way that demonstrates hierarchy. I created about three drafts for each set’s rules. After taping each line on, I went straight onto InDesign to recreate my thumbnails. I tried following strictly to the rules give, but I found the most challenge with Set 3B, since that gave the most amount of freedom, and the least amount of guidance.
6
Each set was thoroughly examined in thumbnails, on print, on the computer, and repeatedly until I was satisfied with my end products. I wanted to focus on overall shape and form, while keeping in mind legibility.

Project 3
Book Design Summary: Design an entire book illustrating typographical orga-
nization through supplied information from Paul Rand. Using only four colors adn the grid system, deisgn a book that demonstrates all of the skills developed over the last few weeks.
Media: Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign
Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop
Materials & Format: Any size Blurbs
Print on hgih quality paper, perfect binding
Process: The first step, like many of the projects, was to beigin
with pen and paper. I sketched out multiple iterations fo my book design, playing with sizing, fonts, and colors. I decided to go with a 10x10” book, keeping in mind the square shape for my formatting of layouts.

Going into InDesign and Photoshop, I focused on the cover of the book because I felt that that was the first eye-catcher, especially since Paul Rand’s books are more playful and handcrafted. I experimented a lot with the imagery provided, attempting to make such simple, boring objects more fun and exciting. My final product came out to be about 40 pages, with a primary-school color scheme, and hand-cut-looking cover to match the personality of many of Rand’s books.
