The Vehicle Motion Labs have been making competitors in sports car racing and other mainstream motorsports faster for years. Now, a division of The Global Center for Automotive Performance Simulation, known simply as SoVa Motion, is getting into a new segment of motorsports — short-track racing. For years, much of SoVa Motion's business came from automotive OEMs. Now Frank Della Pia, executive director of the Global Center for Automotive Performance Simulation, is focusing his troops on a new exciting customer base. Short-track racing — dirttrack racing in particular — is an untapped markets for this technology. SoVa Motion uses several different technologies to perform vehicle dynamics testing, but is best known for its seven-post and eightpost shaker rigs. It’s the eight-post shaker rig attracting dirt-track car builders and some team owners to SoVa headquarters, which is located adjacent to Virginia Int’l Raceway in Alton, Va. Dr. Kevin Kefauver is the technical director for SoVa Motion. “We are trying to bring advanced technology down to short-track and dirttrack teams,” Kefauver told SPEED SPORT. “We are utilizing our eight-post shaker rig to do a dirt-track simulation. We have it set up in a conventional seven-post shaker-rig configuration. We have one actuator under each tire and then three actuators that position the body and then a fourth actuator that we drive the rear axle in such a way that it would be driven on the race track. “With a pavement car, we do not have that longitudinal actuator pushing on the

rear axle. What you have is that extra actuator grabbed on to the chassis,” Kefauver added. “That longitudinal actuator is important because braking and acceleration forces are such an important part of the rear suspension, we need to simulate that in order to produce better simulations and acquire better data.” Kefauver explains how the testing process works. “You are able to come in, and if you have an idea of things that work on the track or don’t work on the track, we can try those things and we can begin to understand what the suspension mechanism is that is causing something to work and when you start to understand that, you are able to do more in that realm,” he said “For example, if it is some sort of spring combination or shock combination, if you can understand what is good and what causes positive benefit on the track, you can try that here and then you can tune on that to find more positive benefit and make your race car faster.” Former NASCAR Cup Series racer and longtime modified driver David Reutimann, who now builds dirt modifieds under the Beak Built banner, is among those who have tested at the SoVa Motion facil-

ity. He says testing, whether on the race track or in the lab, is all about learning the car. “Racing is about learning. Cars are always evolving and that’s about learning how to make the car go faster by adding traction,” Reutimann said while testing at the SoVa Motion facility. “We are trying to make as much traction as possible to make the cars enter the corners faster and exit the corners faster. We want to go in a circle faster, really. Having this stuff as a chassis builder, you can incorporate these things into your cars and make it available to your customers and make your product a little better than the next guy’s. “Originally, this was geared toward changes at the race track, but as you find things that are better, we are finding that maybe we have to change the way we build the cars, too,” Reutimann continued. “The learning process has been two-fold. We are able to do what changes we need to make at the race track, and right off the jig when we build these cars to incorporate more things into these cars to make them easier to work on and more versatile. At the end of the day, a car that is easy to adjust is a car that is going to be a better car for the

customer and for me, as a driver. That is what I am looking for.” Kefauver believes SoVa Motion is an affordable option to testing for grassroots racers. “We are new on the scene bringing this technology to short-track racing,” he said. “We believe we can bring this to people at an affordable rate. That’s why we are here. We are trying to bring technology down to the lower levels of racing. It’s here. Some teams are using it, some teams aren’t. We just want people to have the ability to have that as an option if they would like to try it.” Prices start at $3,000 for an eight-hour day with an operator at SoVa Motion’s testing lab. According to Reutimann, that’s not bad when compared with at-track testing. “Any kind of racing is about the cost and things being cost effective,” he said. “For us, this is an important testing tool. Testing costs money. The wear and tear on your motor, the tires, the fuel, the renting of the race track — all those things that happen cost money. We can come here and do one track test and build a track map and then we can come back here repeatedly and do individual tests, where we don’t always have to go

to the race track. “The word technology scares the grassroots racer,” Reutimann continued. “They are scared to death of it because generally technology means money. In this case, you have to spend a little bit, but it is more affordable to do it this way than it is to go to the race track for days and days of testing. It’s pretty cool to see what you can do here on the fly as opposed to at the race track.” Reutimann says the information he has gained through SoVa Motion testing is invaluable. “There are some extremely intelligent guys working here,” he noted. “Way beyond my level, but they can break things down in real time using graphs and other information that you can understand. There is so much information coming out of this stuff and these guys walk you through every step of it and at the end of the day you have a better understanding of your car. “The thing that impressed me most is that some times a really big change equals a really small result, or vice versa, sometimes there is a little thing we change and it increased things in a certain way that I never dreamed it would do.” That’s testing the SoVa Motion way. !

BY BRIAN LISKAI Much like Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities,” the racing Haudenschild family has that “before” and “after” feel. There’s the son, Sheldon, trying to make a name for himself during his first year racing with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. Then there’s the dad, Jac, a driver already inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, who wants a chance to prove he can still win in a sprint car. The Haudenschild name has been around sprint car racing for many NSSN ARCHIVES PHOTO decades and Sheldon, 24, promises to add to the legacy for many years to come. His dad, Jac, 59, feels he can still add to the family’s victory total. “I can’t tell you how proud we are of Sheldon,” said Patty Haudenschild, Jac’s wife and Sheldon’s mom. “To put his team together and run it, pay the bills, pay the help, make sure the team has what they need and to do it at such a young age is amazing. He’s so organized. But, he’s seen how this works his whole life and he knows how to run the deal.” Jac Haudenschild was just starting to show speed when his summer racing season hit a few bumps in the road. He was involved in a scary crash at Ohio’s Eldora Speedway in May that left him shaken. Then, early in June a piece of mud came through the screen of his car and hit him in the helmet, breaking his nose. After undergoing and recovering from surgery, Jac Haudenschild got the opportunity to drive the Stenhouse Jr. Wood Racing No. 17 in the World of Outlaws Craftsman
