POSSIBLE PRODUCTS
BUTTER Butter is a product I use frequently so thought it was a good product to investigate because of my familiartiy with it. One problem I have with the current packaging of butter is that there are no measuremnt marks on the butter, so I wanted to develop ideas on how to fix that. However, after some critiques, I found that the current design of the product works for most people.

PASTILLAS DE LECHE (SUGAR PILLS) Pastillas de leche is a Filipino candy made from buffalo milk and is my favorite candy in the market. My main issue with the packaging is that it was individually wrapped, so I wanted to explore ways to eliminate waste. In the end, I did not feel as strongly about this issue as I did with the next product, so I abandoned the idea.
EGGROLL/LUMPIA WRAPPERS Eggroll or lumpia wrappers are a permanent fixture in my freezer. Ever since I learned to make lumpia, the FIlipino version of eggrolls, I always made sure to have these in my fridge. One frustration I have with this product is that it is very difficult to peel, and will sometimes tear if not careful. Based on this, I wanted to design a new packaging that addresses durability and ease of use.
EG G R O L L / L U M P I A W R A P R E S E A R C H
Current eggroll products are packaged in sealed plastics and kept in the freezer. They are all packaged flat, and typically without paper separating each sheet, so tearing can occur when not careful. The plastic wrapping is designed for a one-time use, so the packaging is not resealable. The design on the package varies from simple to very busy.

Our first assignment was to research three biomimicry case studies that would be the basis for our final packaging design. For my case studies, I decided to investigate bamboo, pine cone, and the nautilus shell. I made sure to choose wildlife that could potentially be storage units. In the end, I chose bamboo for its durability and nodes that can translate as storage units.
BIOMIMICRY: BAMBOO Bamboo is well-known as a durable, versatile plant that is typically used in constuction, culinary, and many others. It grows quickly at a rate of 3 feet in 24 hours, reaching heights up to 130 feet. It’s durability comes from the bamboo’s sectional structure within its stem as well as within its fibers. In addition, because it contains high levels of silica, termites cannot digest it. A product inspired by ths plant is called Lifearq, “the deceptive bamboo-shaped pieces are actually made of extruded porcelain tile and can be used to create unique room dividers or standalone shade screens.” Pieces can be rearranged and stacked based on preference. Another product is a speaker that used bamboo instead of plastic for a more eco-friendly design.

To gain inspiration for my logo, I searched up eggroll photos so study how it looks. A unique part about eggrolls is how it folds and how it is folded, so I decided to focus on this aspect. Next, I looked up logos for other wrapped foods like burritos to see how other designers tackled the idea.

R O U N D 1 : H A N D W R I T T E N A N D D I G I TA L S K E TC H E S For the first round of sketches, I explored how an eggroll is folded to clearly communicate what product Sarap is selling. On the right are my handwritten and digital iterations. I wanted a clean, modern, minimal look, so I used clean lines and edges. It was during this time that I decided my product name was Wrapped. I wanted the logo to show the action of wrapping. After critique, my peers agreed that the form I used did not resemble an eggroll, because it’s edges are too sharp and straight unlike the dough-like texture of the wraps. W R A PW PR ED APPED

ROUND 2: REDESIGNING AND REFINING Round 2 of sketching logos bore fruit W R to APPED softer, rounder edges, much more resembling an eggroll. I used swirls to show how the side of an eggroll looks when folded. The orange represents the golden color of the eggroll or lumpia once cooked.

After critique, my peers commented that it did not resemble an eggroll, but rather like candy. Even the name Wrapped gave the indication of a candy product. Other comments mentioned how the name Wrapped is not specific enough to eggrolls, because it can also refer to other wrapped foods such as burritos or salad wraps.

EG G R O L L W R A P S By the third round of sketches, I had abandoned my main logo and changed my company name. I played around with the orange background of my previous logo, because I liked its organic form and wanted to keep it a part of my logo. After some exploration I came up with an image of four stacked eggroll wraps, using negative space to separate each layer.
EG G R O L L W R A P S
Sarap became the new name of my company, and it is a Tagalog word that means delicious. I was initially inspired by Filipino cuisine, lumpia, so I thought it appropriate to use a Tagalog word for my company. I also liked that you can hear the word “wrap” in the name. Because the new name is a foreign word, I had to specify what the product is by adding “eggroll wraps.”

FINAL After several iterations and instructor approval, I have the logo that will represent Sarap Eggroll Wraps. The logo is simple, clean, and eye-catching. Comfortaa was chosen for its playful, rounded edges. In letters such as “a” and “p” the stroke seems to move inward as if to continue spiraling into the counter which is reminiscent of how an eggroll or lumpia looks from the side when folded.

To emphasize the color orange of our logo, we have an orange bar on the left. Contact information can be seen on the bottom left corner. The design is simple as to not distract from the letter, but is still bold enough to catch attention. There is a 1 inch margin from the right to the edge of the letter, and 2 inches from the top edge to the start of the letter. The orange bar is .25 inch thick with a .25 inch separation from the letter.

PA C K A G I N G R E S E A R C H I researched packaging online to get an idea of what I wanted to do. Because my biomimicry is bamboo, I looked up tubeshaped packaging. Because my product is a frozen food item, I had to research the proper materials to use to keep the product fresh. I decided on paperboard with soybean wax coating.

Once I had decided what my packaging shape will be, I started sketching to get the dimensions in place. I also had to think of how the mechanism inside the tube will work. I want the wraps to come out in a way similar to a paper towel, meaning they will be wrapped around a form of stick. The will need to be pulled out, and the mechanism has to lock in place so that it does not get pulled all the way out of the container.

MOCKUP I used my sketches to create a mockup using a used Pringles box and contrsuction paper. I made a label and printed it using black and white ink to see if any adjustments need to be made. I also used some paper to represent the wraps inside.

REFINEMENTS From my previous mockup, I realized the design did not have a way to stop the tube from rolling. In my second mock up, I made one side flat to prevent the tube form rolling away. I had also made my label too short and my top label too small. Those were adjustments made in the next construction.
