making every day count
Can you pass the test & find out which Crysto Panda you are?
Who is Fly? Fly is a community of teens doing their thing and staying true to who they are through the choices that they make. We stay focused on things we like such as singing, dancing, football and fashion and stay away from the things that we don’t like abusing, smoking, bullying and stealing.
13
We celebrate our very own achievements and passions. We connect with each other on social media, share and showcase our skills and talents, and learn through the Fly Day tours in schools and Fly Hangout in the hood. There’s also the Fly Unplugged show on Galaxy FM and Hot 100 FM plus mob jazz on the Fly TV show. We make every day count.
Fly Team stand up! I know you guys are doing pretty great so I won’t even ask. From the first issue we rolled out, we got lots of love and the team and I appreciate the feedback that came along. FLY Magazine is for you and by you which is why you’re mos def going to notice a couple of changes you asked for this time, so much that we even added more pages. That only spells one word, S-A-U-C-E! Too much sauce fam. We turnt like that. We are about spreading good vibes only.

Life is not going to always be perfect but by seeing the good in each day, everyday will surely count. This edition comes loaded with dope reads so be nice and don’t read this alone! Humphrey Wampula

MAKING EVERYDAY COUNT SO UG, SO NOT UG MY SCHOOL IS BAWSE FITNESS GALORE GANGOZ RIDDLE THIS All about the dope movies and release dates
The teens have spoken. We went on a journey to find out what are UG teens’ top three “My thing” and top three “Not my thing”. Lotta teens filled in the Manifesto tear-off and here we are.
Top 3 “My Thing“ #1. SINGING Most teens say singing is their thing. We are not sure if singing in the shower counts, but ver, who is counting anyway? Most teens, howe while feel that singing helps inspire them others say it soothes their mind and helps them chillax. Whatever your reason, keep singing do and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t it.
#2. DANCING Did y’all know that just nodding your head could pass for dancing? Even when you think if that you are such a terrible dancer that even is, fact , beat off the beat is slow, you are always and step to shy feel ever you are dancing. Don’t ed move to the beat coz you fear getting laugh at.
#3. FOOTBALL With Uganda Cranes mashing it up on the pitch, most recently beating Egypt so bad the river Nile almost curved’em, most of us dig football now more than ever. Whether it’s on the dusty pitches or the home streets, real soccer balls or paper balls, football reigns supreme. It’s one sport we all love to play and we watch. If we all crammed our books the way the be we’d do international football players, . best in the universe better known as Academia
4
Top 3 “Not My Thing“ #1. CHUCKING FOR OTHERS This is definitely a thumbs-down. Chucking and dissing our mates only puts their self esteem down and is so bad it even gets some thinking of doing the worst to themselves or others or even both. Let us treat our mates the same way we’d wish them to treat us.
#2. SMOKING More and more of us continue to choose smoking as “Not my thing”. We agree, smoking doesn’t give us confidence. We can do that by ourselves by standing up and reppin’ the real us.
#3. BULLYING Did you know that most peeps bully others just so they can cover up their own insecurities? Well, one sure way of dealing with a bully is to ignore them and walk away. If they persist, talk to them politely or talk to someone else like a school counselor, warden or class teacher about it.

Crysto Panda Interview WRITER: Lisa Kanyomozi Rabwoni
If you do not know Crysto Panda, you need to watch more TV buddy. He’s a BTA’17 award winning and fast rising TV presenter, an actor and a fast budding MC. For starters, Crysto has not had success come easy. FLY got an exclusive chit chat with him on his family background, education, career, achievements and how he zig zags through life to make every day count… QTN: If we must start anything, I believe it should be from the bottom. Let’s talk about your fam, school… background in general. CRYSTO: I am the only child of my parents but
have half siblings. I was born in a remote village called Kabonera in Masaka district. I don’t know if you guys have heard of it before. For primary, I was at St. Judy Primary School, Najjanakumbi. Secondary at Christian High School, Najjanakumbi. After, I went to St Jones in Masaka and that’s where I did my A’ level at. Currently, I am in my first year doing a diploma in journalism. I plan to upgrade in filming and film production.
QTN: To many teens, you seem to be one who has already made it! You’re living in your future. But behind the curtains, what have you had to deal with to get here? CRYSTO: I was raised by a single mum, the late Namubiru Cissy. RIP mum! (At this point of the chat, Crysto cannot help but get emotional with his fists shaking as he tries to hold back his tears) My dad passed on when I was only 10 years old. My late mum didn’t have a really good job as she was a bartender so that’s where my school fees came from. We really struggled and when she passed on… (Cysto lets go of his ego and breaks down in tears as he continues to narrate the sad story) …she really did fight hard to get me where I am today and whenever I speak about her I get emotional. My mother did not have much but she used the little she had to keep me in school. I lived in a hood of drunkards and junkies. I have been through it all. I must say the hardest memory for me to overcome and ever forget even if I tried so hard is the loss of my mum. She died right in my hands. It was such a hurtful sight watching life slowly leaving her. Recalling that moment feels like as if it’s just yesterday. The wound on my heart is still fresh and I don’t think it will ever heal. Yes I am a TV personality but when I meet people who think I have it all good, I can’t help but pretend. QTN: I’m sorry for your loss Crysto. Who takes care of Crysto Panda now? Your school fees, pocket money and all?
QTN: The million dollar question at FLY, is simple. What’s your thing:
12
Television presenting, Mc’ing and giving back to the community. Not your thing: Drinking, smoking and clubbing
CRYSTO: I believe a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step and that’s how I take my life. I’m working. I am a television presenter, actor on a series called “5 @ home”, a fashion icon and events MC. Also starting up a charity organization called “Light A Candle” providing books, school shoes and any other basic need to primary school kids just using the little I have to give back because that is what was done for me when I lost all my parents. A man called Charles James Senkubuge paid for my tuition when my mother had nothing. I had no relation with him at
all but my good grades impressed him. I want to be that person to someone else out there in need. I earn a salary from my TV job which I use for paying my own tuition at campus and of course pocket money falls through in there. It’s a hustle but that’s life when the tough gets going.
QTN: Let’s talk career now. When did you realise that the entertainment industry was where your talent lies? CRYSTO: As I grew up, the entertainment business
slowly became more appealing to me. I remember I visited one of my aunties in Kampala and watched a show called “Youth Voice” and I thought to myself that I am better than this presenter and it was at that moment that it hit me and I picked interest. I started working on making myself better; I would stand in the mirror and imitate BBC television presenters, read novels to improve my English. As time went on, I got the guts to go to NTV but they continuously rejected me saying “I am not their type”, “I don’t have what they are looking for”. I saw this as a challenge but I did not give up so I continued to work on my TV presenting skills. I went to WBS and NBS and after some time NTV called me back and chose to give me a chance. It was a shocker of a lifetime! I knew that my dear mama was watching over me from heaven and clearing my path. After TV, I realised that hey, I am also good at being an events MC and here we are…
QTN: Oh my bad I got carried away. What is your real name and where did Crysto Panda come from? CRYSTO: Kityamukweesi Herbert is my real name. I’m a Muganda . Crysto stands for “chances are yet to be opened” and Panda is a name I picked from Desiigner’s hit single Panda. I just love the song and its vibe really… nothing serious! Hahaha
QTN: Are Crysto Panda and Herbert two different people on and off screen? CRYSTO: Herbert and Crysto Panda are the same
person. Crysto is inspired by Herbert. I am crazy on and off screen but I am a free spirited person too. I can chill with kids and old peeps too. I believe I am a soul for all generations.
QTN: What would you tell FLY teens out there who feel like their life isn’t going anywhere and their dreams are beyond reach…? CRYSTO: It does not matter where you come from
or what you are going through but the person you shall work to become tomorrow. Always believe in God no matter your religion. Also strive to be independent. Your parents’ money does not become yours. Work at making your own.

The ripped denim short corners in with its lovely counterpart, a day at the beach or a picnic at the lakeside. Stress less with a cute shirt with a bright top or dark one accompanied with dark makeup will have all eyes present watching your every move. Who does not want to be the star of the show?
This is probably the riskiest thin cares, you only g attend this part to do, but who y once. They have to feel yo ur and wear somet presence. Think out of the bo x hing that’s not a suit. Think of Nigerian tunic a and matching pants, with som sleek loafers to e m like a boss… eh atch. This is how to turn head ehm we mean s baaaaawse!!
SPAGHETTI DRESSES
AFRICAN FABRIC #StayWoke this has more significance than just a fashionable approach. For years, everything African has been looked upon as “not cool” but lately the voice of change has spoken onto nations that we are fly. Dropping a little kitenge addition on a heel, top, clutch, pants, skirt or shirt. Don’t even get us started on African print hoodies and bomber jackets. This is the new lit thing!
If you are already scratching your head over what kind of outfit this might be, sit down! It’s a single strap dress. The dope thing about this trend is one dress can be paired with so much and you’d still kill it. For a simple look, a spaghetti dress and Nike or Fenty push-ins and whatever China-make you can get from down town. To catch a movie or lunch, pair it with sneakers to have that cool feel. For dinner, a pair of heels can suffice with heavy jewelry…those are three outfits with one dress.
CROP TOPS A trend that came back with a new name. Formerly known to the public as “kundi-shows”. Crop tops are perfect for anything and everything. Depending on the design, they restrict you not from taking them on a day or night out. The beauty is you don’t have to be skinny to flaunt that tummy. Every shape and size is welcome to slay in this number. Come on, its 2017! Express yourself!
BLOCK HEELS This must be the trend tha t brings the happiest smiles on heel lovers. It’s such a bumm er to feel the pain that comes with a to-die-for stiletto hee l it literally has you contempla ting the apocalypse. Block hee ls allow you to slay with ease for sho! They are equally fashionable in bright and nud e colours. Drop them pointed heels and call in the block heels.

“I didn’t find my date, but I found my badge on the floor” Man! In my O’ level Sosh, I had also bought a post on the fetching committee. I booked my nice chic on the bus, I went back to house to change into my sosh attire, but when I came back to the room where we were picking dates from, most people had already picked theirs. But I didn’t panic, I had booked my date and given her my badge on the bus. But when I entered the room, it was almost empty and my date was nowhere to be seen! I didn’t know what I was going to do. There’s no way I could walk to the main hall without a date. So I decided to go back to house and just chill… but as I was leaving the room, I stepped on something and heard it crack. I couldn’t believe that it was my badge. I think the kiguy that bounced me had taken my badge from her and thrown it away... or maybe she just threw it. I’ll never know.” Baddo S6, Mengo SS “My date was chopped for poor performance and I didn’t want to go with some guy I didn’t know”

We voted to go for Sosh with Namilyango in S5 first term. So, in Christmas holidays my friend asked me to be his date. He’s a fun person so I said yes and I didn’t want to be picked by a stranger coz that would be a full day of total awkwardness. MIXING BUTTER/BLUE BAND IN PORRIDGE – SO UG
Yoooo! That is so lit. They say necessity is the mother of all creativity and this right here is exhibit A! Porridge is every Ugandan school’s breakfast menu and boy oh boy, it is a huddle to take it flat even with just sugar some times. The good old ancestors, luckily, left us an ancient recipe that we all pride in till today. Mixing butter or blue band in that pora just to give it an extra taste. Some peeps even add Cadbury chocolate in the blend. The taste is life! SO UG!
SCRIBBLING MEMORIALS ON WALLS LIKE, “NEVER FORGET BALIKUDEMBBE S.6 2017” – SO UG Call it whack or cool, this culture is ages old and we don’t wish to see it die. You know that first class session you attend in a new classroom of a new year and as you try to take in the details in sight of all the corners, you notice a few lines written in hasty chalk going, “We Love NGO 1998”, “Never Forget The 3 Amigos”, “Never Forget Ronnix” and so many writings. And at that moment, you can’t help but smile at the humour. That’s that point you are most proud to be Ugandan and that’s SO UG!
