Fly is a community of teens doing their thing and staying true to who they are through the choices that they make. We stay focused on things we like such as singing, dancing, football and fashion and stay away from the things that we don’t like abusing, smoking, bullying and stealing.

We celebrate our very own achievements and passions. We connect with each other on social media, share and showcase our skills and talents, and learn through the Fly Day tours in schools and Fly Hangout in the hood. We make every day count.

Lisa Kanyomozi Rabwoni spoke to teens and asked them; “What’s their thing and what’s not their thing.” She compiled this!

MY THING #1. Selfies for the gram! Click! Click! It is still a selfie generation! The days of the camera man are long gone. We love to capture those moments ourselves and share! Thanks to technology, filters come in handy for the perfect picture. Checklist for the perfect selfie; a cool background, good lighting, wear a smile or pout or make a silly face and click! Try out cool poses with your friends. Taking cool selfies with my friends is definitely my thing! Wizzy, 14, Rubaga

#2. Being me What’s better in life than being yourself? I love to be me and just flaunt it. Look here! There is no any other like me in this entire world. I am God’s original copy and I accept that as a divine gift. Accepting oneself is the sure way to building your self-esteem. Chrispus, 17, Makerere

#3. Social Media Many people come alive online. It’s like data has this launch pad to a whole other personality. Perhaps because they are shy or fear to be judged, some are reserved around people. You get to become the bolder version of you on social media which is a great platform for self-expression. Reel in those followers and discover yourself. Joanna, 15, Old Kampala

6

NOT MY THING #1. Shisha Some people these days do shisha because they think it’s cool. Lots of teens think that shisha is tobacco which isn’t true! It’s actually the exact same stuff that’s in cigarrettes. I think the coolest thing to do is just to do your thing! I get mob love whenever I’m on the basketball court! The feeling in so cool!! Besides, shisha is heavy on the wallet yet I need every coin for trainers and socks! Santi Skipper, 15, Rubaga

#2. Talking about other people Gossiping is not my thing. Gossiping tends to breed bad blood between people. Instead, it’s always much better to get to know someone by interaction. Fatma, 16, Nsambya

#3. Shopping. This is fun for many but it is also a tiring activity for some. The crazy work load it takes to find the perfect fit is not an easy job downtown. Vendors set different prices and you literally have to ‘bargain’ your way out! Ate when your pocket is a bit empty, it is even more draining. Mercylee, 13, Muyenga

7. Let God work in you

1. I wish I knew serving God is not only for old people You don’t have to wait till you are old to get saved. God wants you to Him so that He can use you to live your true purpose while you still have the energy, strength and ambitions.

2. I wish I knew older people also make mistakes

In life you may find yourself fighting to get things done. But there is God! He wants to work through you. Embrace Him and see your life change.

8. Self belief is the best start

To get anything done, you have to first believe in yourself. If you are filled with doubt, you can’t get anything done.

9. There is time for everything

When I was growing up I made so many mistakes and You can’t have it all at once. Certain things do take time thought the older you get, the less mistakes you make. so just be patient and enjoy the moment. If I’d known this while I was growing up, I wouldn’t have 10. Nobody can stop you when it’s your spent time judging myself.

3. I wish I gave certain things more time

I did not give many things time. I would try this and leave it at that. When I grew up, I concentrated on music and now it has paid off. I wish I had done the same for other things much earlier. Perhaps I would have achieved big even at that age.

4. I wish I knew not all ‘friends’ are good. Some come in your life to mislead you and get you in trouble. Stay woke guys and get good friends.

time

When it’s your time, nobody can play with it. Nobody can stop you.

11. Talent is gold

Whatever your talent is, wherever your passion lies, focus on it and make the best out of it.

12. Start early

You don’t have to wait till you grow old to do something with your life. It is important to start early.

5. Not every decision you make is the right 13. You are special You need to think twice before you make certain decision especially if they are to have long term consequences. Some things like smoking, gang life are not worth even trying.

6. Not every opinion of adult is the right thing

Yes even adults have not figured it all. So not every opinion they tell you is automatically the right thing.

14

People or situations may put you down but keep telling yourself how special you are.

14. Life without Christ is hard

When Jesus came in my life, He became the changer, giver, redeemer and protector.

15. Jesus is the detergent

No matter the mistakes you have made, Jesus will wash you clean.

1. I wish I knew life is 10% what happens to 8. Be your greatest hero. us and 90% how we react to it Achievement and competition. The minute you remove

I probably would have reacted better to the situations the outside world and start realizing that the biggest that happened to me. competition you have is yourself and the biggest achievement you have is yourself; you will put in more.

2. Words are powerful

I would have practiced more positive thinking and knowing that what you say actually has a real big impact on your life. Speak positivity and only think positivity.

3. People lie

Yes, people lie. Your heroes will lie. Even Beyonce lies. I wish I did not have that naïve thinking that people will tell you the truth just because you told them the truth.

9. How people treat you says more about themselves than it does about you We all know how important is this!

10. Learn to let go

Life may be short but it has a lot of stuff happens in that short time. Learn to let go when it’s going to hold you back.

11. Heartbreak is unavoidable

4. Beauty in someone else does not take away the beauty in you

It’s going to happen. It’s unavoidable. It’s inevitable but it’s not the end of the world. So enjoy when you are in love

It is very important lesson especially if you are young girl at 15 thinking because they call the other person beautiful makes you less beautiful. You lose the inward beauty wanting to be the pretty one. I wish I knew that when I was 15.

We used to give teachers a tough time…imagine you give this teacher a very bad day but this is the very person trying so hard to make you a very important person in future!

5. Those butterflies you feel, that’s not love! Not even close! Don’t lose yourself in the craziness.

6. Be careful whom you take your advice from. Not everyone knows or wants the best for you.

7. School is important.

School shapes you so it is really important!

12. Teachers are humans too!

13. No matter what you do, you will always have haters Yes, that’s how it is!

14. Reputation matters Reputation matters a lot actually so that learning how to make your reputation now.

15. Happiness matters

Happiness is your responsibility.

I think this is the best time to be alive, like ever! If you compare our time to the olden days, I think ours is more fun and diverse. Technology and innovations has made things easy. My big bros tell me how they had one TV back then and it was for the entire neighborhood. Lol. When I want to watch stuff, I just go to YouTube. Danny, 18 Some older people think we are restless. I think not. We are just curious and we love to find things our way and that to me, makes my generation unique. Jo’, 16 My father told me I am a lucky chap to be a teen in this generation. We have a lot of opportunities that we can explore and be great men in the future. And now that we rely a lot on the internet, we shouldn’t take it for granted. Stuart, 14 This generation is about working hard. Yes, our parents worked hard but the competition now is so stiff, it’s scary but one must be creative to survive. If we’re competitive, we get to innovate more and that makes my generation awesome.

I see many women in my generation sitting on the same table as guys. In the previous generations it was hard for a female to be in the same space as men. I’m the eldest and the only girl among my siblings. This is teaching me to be a leader. Becky, 18 My older cousins tell me that they admire my generation because we are so free. And by that they mean we are lucky to be able to express ourselves better. I thinks that’s pretty cool. Sanyu, 13 I’m a social media junkie. I like that I’m able to relate and chat with so many people so easily. I’ve made some pretty great friends from social media. On Whatsapp, me and some friends have a group where we task ourselves to learn and share something new every week. My generation totally rocks Diana, 16 I love the fashion. A girl can wear different outfits and take on different personalities in a day. I can wear a gown, leggings or skirts and simply celebrate being female without limiting myself to skirts or blouses. Yes, we are aware Shisha has that sweet smell. However, our generation is too smart to fall for tobacco just because it has been laced by perfumed stuff. Actually, most Shisha is tobacco. Did you know that a one-hour session of shisha is equivalent to smoking 100 cigarettes? Damn! And the ‘glamourous’ image is a bit of marketing from Big Tobacco to try and find new ways to get tobacco inside you but we won’t be taken for a ride. Our generation is way smart for that!

TRUE: Confidence comes from within

TRUE! Knowing who you are and what you stand for give you confidence to be who you really are. Don’t believe the a rumours, confidence can’t be found at the bottom of a shish pipe or a packet of cigarettes, it comes from within, from being you and staying true to who you are. When you are truly yourself, then your confidence will shine through.

TRUE:Teens around the world are smoking less

This is TRUE! Smoking rates around the world for teenagers are actually dropping. Smoking rates around the world for l teenagers are actually dropping – in fact, 78% of the globa population are now non-smokers! It’s becoming less and less cool to smoke, it’s something the world is growing out of. There are some great movements around the world that show teens rejecting tobacco. We love SKY Girls Accra, an initiative that encourages girls to be clear on their values which includes rejecting tobacco use. We love SKY Botswana too! Don’t be left out of an inspired generation!

FALSE: The ones with swagger are the ones that smoke

Kampala teens have the most swagger and they have said that it isn’t their thing. In fact it’s one of the top three ‘not my things’. And we’ve got it up there as one of the top ‘not my things’ from celebrities in Uganda too. We have hosted Fresh Boy Fik Fameica, Chozen Blood, Voltage Music, Uganda Cranes stars and they told us smoking is not cool! And are you saying that these guys aren’t the one with swagger?! myth was made up by Big Tobacco to encourage ger swag The ve acti attr e mor you es mak king Smo E: FALS you put more money in their pockets. It’s not easy figuring out things on your own. Our generation is filled with so much information but at times, getting the guidance that’s right for you is tricky. But don’t worry, we gatchu. In this column we got some teens to throw in a few pieces of advice and help out other teens. Hello Fly buddy. I have a problem. I want to do arts for A-Level because my passion is journalism. My parents however are insisting that I do sciences because I excelled in them too. They are saying arts courses have no market. What should I do? ADVICE 1. Your dream matters a lot for your future. Talk to your parents and explain to them where your passion lies. Make them understand that you love Arts more than Sciences. Vines TJ Vincent 2. Nothing should hold you back from doing what you love the most. So follow your heart. Teknoboi

Wassup Fly buddy. I live in my uncle’s home with my older cousins. I really enjoy hanging out with them especially during the weekends when we play ball coz it’s what we love doing. Not to brag but we are very good at it. Last term holiday, my oldest cousin who is in Form 5 came back and told us that we need to try out smoking if we want to be cooler. My other cousin and I refused because it’s not our thing. He doesn’t seem to want to listen to us when we tell him to chill. What do we do? Freddie, 14 ADVICE 1. Dear Freddie, you guys like to hang right? Just encourage him to focus on his thing instead. Since playing basketball is also his thing, next time he

wants to go for a cigarette, why not invite him to shoot some hoops with you instead? If he’s having fun doing his thing, he won’t need to smoke. Shan. 2. The truth is, smoking does not make you cooler. From what you said, he plays basketball and is really good at it. I personally think that’s cool enough. Ballers at my school are very cool peeps. Actually, what would make him cooler is if he did try outs for the National Basketball team. Tell him to so he can direct his energy and concentrate on his thing. Maxx

movie depicts the life of Reene (Amy Schumer) as an ordinary woman who is quite insecurity about her appearance but all that changes when she wakes from a fall and suddenly starts looking at herself as beautiful and generally being positive about life. If you’re one of those people who are not confident about yourself, this movie encourages you to embrace your true self and be whatever you want to be. By the way, Naomi Campbell makes an appearance in this movie and of course, she blesses us with her saucy looks. We definitely recommend this.

I love my school because we have a very good debate club. Most of the teens are really good at self-expression. If I was to brag a little bit, I think the best politicians passed through MACOS. Also, it is a haven for talent. Some of the celebs you know went through MACOS and that in my opinion makes my school bawse.

What makes my school really cool is the fact that girls can have long hair. I think that’s why I’d say my school is bawse. Most schools in UG do not allow long hair and yet long hair makes you look classy especially if held in a puff. Samantha 15

Tell us a little about yourself. I’m Apolot Patricia aka Black Pearl born on 6th November 1990 in small village called Ngora to Aujo Josephine and Emmanuel Mukula Arikosi. I come from a family of 5 and I’m the first born.

How did it feel to become the first female Ugandan to win a fight on an international stage? Most feelings are not easy to describe. Most Ugandan male kickboxers went and lost. I was the first to go and win, in fact it’s mind blowing. Only God can tell what I felt that day.

How do you balance your life as a competing athlete with the other priorities?

Timing! I try to look through what I have before I decide on what to do next.

Hmm. Why are you called Black Pearl? C.E.O WKF gave me the name because I’m black and from the Pearl of Africa. I embraced the name.

How did you discover kickboxing? Was it easy in the beginning? It was very hard in the beginning. What I hated most was the pain! I would not be able to move my body the following day and yet I still had to go back to the same place!

That hurts! What kept you going?

I wanted to find out my uniqueness as a person and also change the thinking of people about girls and women in this industry especially in Uganda.

What is one of the biggest lessons you’ve learnt in the sport?

Never to give up. Know what you want the most and live for it till the end.

Tell us about your most memorable fight. I went with my full team to Hungary for the intercontinental title belt. I had been so sick for two weeks before and was also on medication. I decided not to take drugs for two days to the fight. By God’s grace I won the fight and I became the champion.

What in your experience are some of the greatest challenges that women face in training martial arts? Most women are called cowards no matter what they do, a few are respected in the start. We are abused, mocked and insulted at all levels. It’s difficult to keep up and it’s really heart breaking when no one is able to appreciate that. When a woman goes to a company looking for support, most times it is not given to them. Most men do not want to share the stage with women, I have seen that commonly in Uganda, they make their fights and rule out women.

And what has motivated to keep you going? Persistence. Even though I have been kicked out of a company office, I go back to try my luck again. Most times I fail but I go back and keep trying. I have also met good people and we have shared our journeys together and this has made me keep on.

Who are your role models? I’m my own role model.

Why? Why? Because many times we admire people without knowing what they went through to become what they are. I have gone through injuries, insults, shame and pain and what’s why I look at myself as my own role model.

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger indeed! Do you have any message you’d like to give to other women and girls in kickboxing? Create your own legacy. Don’t be afraid to try. Being brave is beautiful.
