My name is Juanjo Cubí Hernández, an architect from Orihuela, Spain. For the last five years I have lived in Antwerp, Belgium. Here I developed my professional experience while collaborating with several firms. After an internship at Atelier ASA (http://www.atelierasa.eu/) and one year and a half working at Tom Cortoos Architecten (http://tomcortoosarchitecten. com/), I started working at stedenbouw en architectuur Frank van Hulle (http://frankvanhulle.be). During this period I had the chance to face a wide range of assignments, diverse in scale and program (from small interior projects such as furniture pieces to urban design or landscape architecture projects, including new housing blocks or rehabilitation of historical buildings) for all kinds of clients (public administration, open competitions or private with different budgets). I consider essential a multidisciplinary process where architecture, landscape architecture and urban design enhance each other to find an answer to the specific needs and context of each situation. On the side, I always stay active by collaborating as a freelancer for various companies as well as working on joint projects for competitions. I have won several prizes for my work. I received my architecture degree at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia. For my final degree project I developed a Community Integration Complex (CIC) for people with mental illnesses, located in ‘el Cabanyal’ in Valencia, a degraded area of the city. The aim of the project was to achieve the social regeneration of this area with the refurbishment of the ‘Lonja’, a historic building in this fishing village. While studying, I worked together with Valencia-based studio MACLA Arquitectos and PAISEA landscape architecture magazine also located in Valencia. At the moment, I am a permanent collaborator with the magazine, and I coordinated a couple of the issues of the magazine: 029 pedestrian areas and 032 urban parks 3. The magazine allows me to be in direct touch with landscape architecture in a very active and dynamic way. Once in Belgium, I did an internship in Atelier ASA, in Antwerp, through the Leonardo da Vinci program. There I worked on several competitions such as
Europan 12 or VMSW (Social Housing), and on some other housing projects. This experience was really useful, giving me the chance to learn and to work in a nice ambience where I could improve my language and professional skills. Afterwards I became an architect at Tom Cortoos Architecten, working on several house renovation projects and competitions for public buildings such as schools, libraries , visitors centers, or public spaces. Later I started working as an architect at stedenbouw en architectuur Frank van Hulle. Here I have been working on several assignments, both architecture and urban design, during the whole process, from design to the execution. Here I had the chance to be more independent and have more responsibility on my projects, as well as I could improve my technical capabilities and my language skills (Dutch). Concerning my professional skills, I have advanced knowledge of AutoCAD and Photoshop as well as InDesign and Illustrator or Sketchup. I am also efficient in 3D studio and some rendering tools like Maxwell or VRay. I am a native Spanish speaker and I am able to speak fluent English. I have a medium level of Dutch, which I always try to improve by my daily use in the office. I have also followed some Dutch-languages courses. I have notions of French and German. Last year I followed several courses of photography (architecture photography), which is a great completion to my profession. I have won prizes for two consecutive years from the V and VI International Competition of Cátedra Hispalyt (http://www.aulahispalyt.es) for joint projects, I also received a second prize in a Competition for Cátedra Municipios Sostenibles UPV. Last year I got an honourable mention for my proposal of an ephemeral installation for ‘La Nit de l’Art 2017, Castellón. Concluding, I have a lot to offer and always something to learn. I am a very active and enthusiastic person and work very well in a team. I am looking to take the next challenging step in my career. Therefore I make contact with you and I would be grateful if we would have the change to share our thoughts. I look forward to hearing from you Yours faithfully, Juanjo Cubí Hernández

27 Student flats + common spaces
Antwerp. Belgium / 2016-2017 Personal contribution: Design and detailing facade, interior of the student rooms and courtyard.
stedenbouw en architectuur Frank van Hulle
In accordance with the current typology in the street (high ground floor, 3 upper floors and a roof floor), the high level floor is used to set up the common space, oriented to the busy street, as a pleasant duplex space, which is clearly visible in the facade and by its function and scale interacts with the street. The student rooms are implanted on the backside on the one hand and in the main facade only from the first floor, ensuring the necessary privacy. The ground floor is pleasantly spacious, airy and feasible to set over the entrance area in the outdoor
environment and let it pass through the covered bicycle storage towards the garden situated at the back of the building. The rooms on the floors are reached via the centrally located corridor around the compact vertical circulation core. At the rear, glazed doors release on the escape terraces, which also provide daylight on the hallway on each level. The student flats aim to offer optimal comfort without hypothecating the available space by combining the sanitaries with a compact and thoughtfully designed piece of furniture in each room.
HTB HOF TER BEKE
Restoration and redevelopment of castle Hof Ter Beke into conference centre with restaurant Wilrijk. Antwerp. Belgium/ 2016-2017 Design, detailing and some aspects of the construction site
stedenbouw en architectuur Frank van Hulle + Ronny de Meyer architect
The design for the restoration of this monument is the result of a well-considered and worn design process, based on scientific historical research and intensive consultation with all government agencies involved.
and organize the circulation from the coupling volume and improve the interaction with the park. The three rooms on the ground floor can therefore work independently and connected.
All installations such as kitchen, evacuation staircase, elevator, sanitary, are gathered in a new coupling volume situated between the main and the annexe monumental buildings.
The specific attention for the three characteristic approaches (L-shape from the inner courtyard, main building with a tower from park and Boomsesteenweg, and annex with curtain wall towards the park and Terbekehofdreef), improves the relationship between the castle and the surroundings and the protected view and is in line with the re-destination of the castle with more public-oriented functions and the role that the castle will have in the rehabilitation of the park area. Due to the modest design of the new hinge building, which incorporates all the technical functions, the spatial qualities of the restored monument, which has been greatly decayed, are at their best.
This hinge building connects both existing buildings which have fulfilled complementary functions in the different periods of time. This proposal for a new coupling volume also integrates the northern neogotic faรงade. The simple geometric and transparent design of the coupling volume emphasizes the formal autonomy of main and secondary buildings. The new volume is a central access where the different halls are linked. Glazed galleries embrace north and east of the monument

CHA CHATEAU LAGUT
Renovation of two ruins into holiday houses: old Grape house and old Dovecote. Negrondes. France / 2016 Concept design
stedenbouw en architectuur Frank van Hulle
Les Vignes
Le Pigeonnier
Starting from the ruins of this old barn we were asked to renew it into a holiday house for 4/6 people.
The renovation of this old dovecote into a suite is outlined from the same principles:, emphasizing the values of the original typology and creating a contrast with the modern intervention.
Finding the balance between new and old is our main goal. The wooden structure and the stone masonry walls are renewed and kept visible and some distinguishable openings are added to improve the relation with the surroundings and the quality of the interior space. The humid areas are combined creating two small volumes and keeping clear and flexible the ground floor. The stairs lead the visitor to the sleeping area, where a flexible space could also be used for extra visitors. This space is connected to the ground floor through a double height space.
The wooden roof structure and the masonry walls are still visible, with the holes used for the pidgeons. A glazed floor is installed to keep the relation with the roof from both levels and a spacious interior. On the groundfloor, the living area; upstairs, the sleeping area; both connected with a volume (wooden - glazed/mirror) which contains the kitchen, toilet and bathroom.

The design proposes an alternative to the classical deployment, in which the green character of the interior area is enhanced to function as a generous, collective space for the purpose of living. The 60 assisted houses are grouped in 5 pavilions that match the scale of the surrounding buildings.

The gate building ºwill link the street with the green interior area. The access will be flanked by common facilities such as multipurpose areas, seating and relaxation spaces with cafeteria, space for paramedics and a southfacing terrace with playground. In this way, direct connections are sought between the neighborhood and the inner area and meetings among neighbors, residents, family, friends and small children are encouraged. The permeability of the residential area for cyclists and pedestrians (shortcut to center) increases its public significance.

The project is located in an inner area of a large building block in the center of Beveren. The goal is to respond adequately to the increasing demand for adapted, non-stigmatizing, housing for 65-plus living in Beveren.

Atelier ASA
A first step in the organization of the masterplan for the Europan site is the creation of a U-shaped building block, surrounding the incoming green that connects landscape and city. Secondly, in order to preserve both Mega and the Åsheim house, parts of the building are disconnected and allow the establishment of transversal connections in between. More side streets appear when the block is further scaled down, through which the site becomes an easily accessible area in proximity of the city center. Shifting the various housing blocks, in the end, optimizes the views over the site and the relationship of each house with the green. The program for the masterplan has to respond to the request of Ås to facilitate a mixed program, with a strong focus on cultural and university life. A large part of the Europan site is filled in with
2040: Further expansion is foreseen along both poles of the strip.

collective housing. The appartments offer an alternative for mainly young families, singles and elderly to the freestanding houses that characterize Ås right now. Part of each ground fl oor is taken by duplex houses, provided for (semi-)commercial, work or private space. The Åsheim house, on its turn, is preserved for a B&B. Further, a signifi cant amount of students is housed in Mega. By providing space for student accommodation close to the town center, our site fulfi lls the role of the missing node in the network of campus’s that turns Ås into one university town again. The synergy between community and university life is then strengthened by attributing
the lower fl oors of Mega to a business and community center where f.e. architects and graphic designers can have their offi ce. In fact, the center contributes to a larger cultural scene that is set up on the site and is further shaped by the atelier houses and the Tandberg Museum. Being a landmark on the edge of town, the museum itself does not function as an isolated tower. It is part of a cultural trajectory through the center of Ås. Since the Tandberg collection is spread over public spaces of the town, it highly interacts with visitors, inhabitants and possibly other artists who are invited to respond to it. The museum meets the neighborhood, in a way.

House renovation in Antwerp
Antwerp. Belgium / 2014 -2015 Design, detailing and visualizations.
Tom Cortoos Architecten
The typical back volume of this town house is being renovated while preserving the distinct character of the respective chambers. Each room will have its own decking and roof shape so the rooms further privatize while thanks to the large openings are closely interlinked. Between the kitchen on the ground floor and office on the mezzanine a spatial connection is provided.
ROQU MERCADO DE ABASTOS
Competition for the renovation of the Municipal Market Roquetas de Mar. Spain / 2014 Concept design and visualizations
Tom Cortoos Architecten
The existing market building is stripped of all secondary and technical systems to achieve a completely open space under the sculptural roof with inverted arches. The perimeter of the building is fully glazed and where necessary the glass facade is set back to protect the space from the harsh sun or a second layer added with external screens. All serving functions are housed in the small volumes that are placed against the market hall. The entrance, a cafĂŠ, loading docks and offices are placed in the volumes cladded with aluminum plates. The concrete gutters collect the water from the spectacular roof and spit it into the water features in the square.

PLAN ABOVE GRADE (1/500)
PLAN BELOW GRADE (1/500)
All different periods in history left their marks and traces in the city, much like layers or sediments in geology. Biggest challenge here is to give back spatial continuity to the area of the Central Square, as it is now cut into four sectors by the crossing of two major roads. To achieve this we push the car tunnel underneath the Roman ruins, thus creating an archeological anachronism with the contemporary layer underneath the ancient layer.

Thanks to this unifying intervention a continuous landscape passes underneath the central square. This square measures exactly 180m by 180m and is constructed from large syenite blocks. The square installs a new ‘contemporary’ grid which clashes with the Roman grid. The tension between these two dominant directions reveals the confrontation of the different historic layers. Our proposal shows a clash of historic layers. All periods are treated equally. We treat these layers with respect but are not intimidated nor paralyzed by the presence of this overwhelming history. New layers are added, interventions of today have their own logic and identity. They continue the history of this intriguing place in the centre of Plovdiv. ARE TRAL SQUUA

SHOAH SHOAH MEMORIAL Competition
Place for Contemplation
Bologna. Italy / 2015 Concept design, visualizations and model
Tom Cortoos Architecten
The Memorial clearly steps out in the urban tissue of its surroundings, much like the events it commemorates. Three tools are used to generate the Memorial; extrusion, rotation and excavation. The plan is constructed from fragments of synagogues, ghetto alleys, safe houses, hiding places. The result is an uneasy and unsettling collection of spaces. Rooms and courts that recall images of burnt-down houses and abandoned places. It creates a world of shadows with a strong contrast between the lit clearings in the field and the dark shadows in the dense zones. Larger courts get a specific use; a Place for Gathering and Place for
Contemplation. A tree is planted here as a symbol of hope, for he who believes the world will soon come to an end doesn’t plant trees. Benches offer a place to rest, talk, think. A line with the names of the Jews that were arrested and deported from Bologna runs over the memorial, honouring the victims of the holocaust. A continuous route connects the entry on Via Matteotti with the one in Via Carracci, rendering the passage through the Memorial into an experience with a clear beginning and end. Visitors leaving the Memorial find themselves in a different place and another state of mind.

RELE RELEGEM SCHOOL Competition
Relegem. Belgium / 2014 Concept design and visualizations
Tom Cortoos Architecten
The new school building would be organized in one level. This is a very clear choice to achieve an extremely accessible and clear building. At the back of the school site, facing the fields, comes the new volume. The relationship between the playground and the adjacent playing field is ensured by cutting the volume. The entrance to the building is marked and there is an interesting junction where the canopy, the entrance to the building and the path come together. The circulation of the existing building and the canopies is continued in the new building. The physical integration is optimal, and also forms the basis for a next phase with further capacity expansion.
The central area of the new building gets daylight by inserting two patios and a skylight. The smaller rooms where special classes are given are linked. Furthermore, this area is filled with storage and technical spaces. The bigger classes are situated on the outside of the construction and all of them have a large window directed towards the surroundings. At the back of the property is as if the beautiful rolling countryside rolls in the 4 classes because the ground connection at the level of the windows. The low volume also indemnifies the view from the main building of the new volume around at this magnificent landscape
LEB LEBBEKE SCHOOL Competition
Lebbeke. Belgium / 2014 Concept design, visualizations and detailing
Tom Cortoos Architecten
The new building is conceived as two different volumes to be built against each other, so both (the classroom building and the multipurpose space) have its own “ideal customized plan. The classroom building with its tight structure efficient plan, compact and with a lot of repetition and the multipurpose room as a large open space. The multipurpose room with its program for the entire school site, and by extension even for the whole neighborhood, can play a role as a building with a connecting role. The emblematic shape of the room reinforces this character.

House extension
Melle. Belgium / 2015 Concept design and model
Tom Cortoos Architecten
The project consists of a new extension for a freestanding house. The main goal is to avoid building a simple box against the existing building that does not relate with it. The extension should house a new kitchen and a cinema - sitting area. It is build as an addition of several elements (podium, wall-cabinet, ceiling, glass facade, pivoting door and terrace) that at the same time link it with the existing but highlight the different qualities of each space.

Respect. Respect for the urban environment’s geometry. The building is inserted trying to fit existing alignments, filling the space where a little park was placed. That way, the historic fabric of the Jewish quarter is maintained, avoiding building within this area. Respect for the topography, avoiding placing the pavilion on the hillside, where its location would compete with the view of the Theatre and the Castle. The Roman urban fabric, different to the checkerboard layout of the cities placed on a flat terrain, trying to solve slope issue by creating terraced buildings. This structure suggests that the pavilion could be one step more. To recover. To recover the Theatre entrances. To contribute to the value of each and every entrance. To create spaces in front of these entrances, where the visitors can wait before the performance. To recover certain land scaped areas, establishing new uses, as well as access to the
Theatre and the Castle, and a viewpoint, on the top of the hillside. To recover the square as a public space for pedestrians, hiding the parking underground. an open space for the visitors, the pavilion and the Theatre. A square that receives the visitor and is a prelude to the Theatre dignifying the perception of the canvas that shapes the urban pedestrian space. To connect. To connect the town with the square. The square with the pavilion. The pavilion with the Theatre and the Castle. To generate a transition between several uses. A route where the cars stop before entering the square, with the intention of the pedestrian being the protagonist and discovering the historical monuments. la Lonja de Pescadores del CabaĂąal as a pretext. Community Integration Complex (CIC) for the mentally ill Valencia. Spain / 2012
directed by Ă?Ăąigo Magro & Manuel Portaceli
The project proposes to renew the historical building of the Lonja in the degraded neighbourhood of El Cabanyal in Valencia. The aim is to suggest a new use in order to value it and recover this mostly residential maritime village. Instead of housing a emblematic program, the suggested use consists of a Community Integration Complex for mentally ill. The goal is to normalize the situation of mentally ill and integrate them in the sociaty rather than isolating them. This is achieved, on the one hand, by settling in their residence in this urban fabric and on the other hand, by locating the common areas , as well as the public program, in the building of the Lonja, so all the neighbourhood can make use of it.

1st prize. V Competition Cátedra Hispalyt Square, bus stop and café project Santander. Spain / 2011 Concept design, visualizations and model
with José Francisco Carsí, Ignacio Cuena & Jesús Utrillas
Nowadays more than a square, the area of intervention could be considered as a “non-place.” A fragmented, chaotic and lifeless space. Our intention was to reorder this area recovering the original vision of this space, reinterpreting and adapting to new needs. The plaza is located in a strategic location at the confluence of the main access arteries to the city. Moreover, it is the centre of the city’s public transport (FEVE, RENFE and bus station). In the immediate surroundings of the square, there are two different scales: a bigger, the residental buildings one, and another smaller one, more suitable to the intervention, the two stations scale.
The project of the square, bus stop and the café, will try to respond to traffic, trying to create a filter between the road and the square, while properly seeking to relate to the urban spaces that precede these buildings, transforming this formless continuum into a square reflecting the character of the place. Our intention was to condense the facilities in a band that makes as a filter and contains both the café and bus stop, or other uses that exist at present and we find interesting to maintain, such as the taxi stop, small parking zones and bike rental stations. In this way we get a clear space between the band and the stations, away from the traffic. Talking about the volumetric relation-
ships, we wanted the piece to engage with the station using the height of the basement, the minor bodies and of the access canopy. The project involves some closed boxes, which host the service pieces and at the same time will organize served spaces, lighter and more flexible. These spaces are covered by a canopy that unifies the whole proposal. It looks like an adaptation of the horizontal shelter that Gutiérrez Soto introduced to these stations in 1949, innovative at this time, if we compare them with predominantly classic vaulted ones. The proposal is based on the station, its modulation and rhythm to shape the entire program, from the treat-
ment of the square to the café and the bus stop, the parking area and even the urban furniture and the alignment of vegetation. In the southern part of the intervention, the canopy is gone, but conceptually it retains the functionality and linearity of this strip, incorporating the rest of the program.

According to the value of the surrounding landscape, the main idea of the project was to recover this place as a starting point for leisure, rest and cultural activities. On the other hand, taking into account the original use of the complex, recycling was another of the main ideas of the project. To recycle, to reuse, to reorder. Each and every proposed use tries to profit at most the existing structures. Giving new uses which could turn the place into a site of connection with the environment, at the same time allowing a flexible space for temporary activities. Making the most of the platforms as viewpoints, sport, leisure and rest areas. Using the slopes as stands, slides, connections among the platforms and green areas; the walls as green tapestries or climbing walls; the preexisting buildings as shading structures. Allowing the buildings to integrate with the landscape. Reforesting the arid areas trying to cover the most degraded areas as well as creating shaded areas in the complex.
