H
istoria, ciencia y tecnología han hecho, con la búsqueda de los restos de Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra en el Convento de las Trinitarias Descalzas, que el Barrio de las Letras haya abierto informativos en televisión y radio, y ocupado páginas en periódicos y revistas. Y no solo en Madrid y en España, ya que el eco de este esfuerzo histórico-cultural ha traspasado fronteras para ratificar la condición del Barrio de las Letras como un enclave que, en pleno siglo XXI, tiene mucho que ofrecer para rememorar los logros de hitos de la literatura como Cervantes, Calderón de la Barca, Lope de Vega, Quevedo… Esta noticia revitalizará, sin duda, el interés por unas calles cuya vida recoge, en cada una de sus ediciones, la revista que tiene en sus manos. Es el momento para que las instituciones refuercen su apoyo a esta zona de la ciudad para que la relevancia de este descubrimiento nos haga crecer a todos: nunca más que ahora, la oferta de comercio, cultura y turismo se puede hacer lo más atractiva posible para los visitantes del Barrio de las Letras de Madrid, con una mejor conservación de las calles y del mobiliario urbano, y con una señalética adecuada de los lugares de interés que no existe en la actualidad. Si se reivindican la figura del escritor castellano-universal –como se hace con los clásicos en otras países– y el entorno en el que se encuentra, habrá que apoyar a todos los que trabajan, día a día, en este barrio para que este esfuerzo lo sea en beneficio común: hay que difundir noticias como ésta… Empieza una etapa ilusionante para todos.

The future of the past History, Science and technology have, with the search for the remains of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra at the Convento de las Trinitarias Descalzas, ensured that the Barrio de las Letras was headline news on television and radio and occupied countless newspaper and magazine pages. And not only in Madrid and Spain; the echoes of this historical-cultural effort have been felt throughout the world, confirming the Barrio de las Letras as a quarter that, in the 21st century, has plenty to offer in homage to the achievements of literary heavyweights like Cervantes, Calderón de la Barca, Lope de Vega, Quevedo... This news will undoubtedly reignite interest in the streets whose life is recorded in every edition of the magazine you have in your hands. Now is the moment for institutions to back up their support for this area of the city so that the importance of this discovery is felt by us all: now more than ever, the commercial, cultural and tourist offerings can be made as attractive as possible for visitors to Madrid’s Barrio de las Letras. If the figure of the universal Spanish writer is to be reclaimed -as other countries do with their classicsalong with the area where it is to be found, support must be forthcoming for those that work day in day out in this neighbourhood so that this project benefits everybody: these news stories must be shared, businesses must be supported, streets must be presented in a way that generates tourists’ interest... a new and exciting period has begun for all of us.

Vuelve DecorAccion Entre el 11 y el 14 de junio tendrá lugar una nueva edición de DecorAccion. A lo largo de estos cuatro días, el Barrio de las Letras se convierte en un escaparate para el mundo de la decoración. Se trata de un evento que recoge las novedades más sorprendentes del sector y que contará con una nutrida programación de instalaciones, conferencias, teatro, conciertos y gastronomía. Los interioristas, anticuarios y galeristas toman esos días las calles del barrio y ponen en marcha mercadillos y sacan sus mercancías a la calle. Además, los restaurantes y hoteles de la zona participan en el evento, decorando sus escaparates y ofreciendo menús temáticos.
DecorAccion Returns The latest edition of DecorAccion will be held from 11 to 14 June. Over the four day event, the Barrio de las Letras will become a showcase for the world of decoration. The occasion will be a platform for everything that is innovative and surprising in the sector and there will be plenty on offer, with installations, talks, theatre, concerts and gastronomy. Interior designers, antique dealers and gallery owners will take to the streets, setting up market stalls displaying their wares in the open air. Restaurants and hotels in the neighbourhood will also be taking part in the event, decorating their façades and windows and offering special themed menus.

El sábado 21 de marzo, Chulapaflow Producciones volvió a inundar de arte el Barrio de las Letras. Varios locales de la zona acogieron teatro, cabaret, arte o performances con una sola limitación: cada propuesta debe durar, como máximo, 21 minutos. Próxima fecha: 20 junio
On Saturday 21 March, Chulapaflow Producciones once again immersed the Barrio de las Letras in a celebration of the arts. Several local establishments hosted theatre, cabaret, art and performances with only one restriction: no act could exceed a 21 minute time limit. Next date: on June 20

Gastro Bacchus
Gastro Bacchus
Entre el 17 y el 23 de marzo, 16 locales del Barrio de las Letras acogieron la iniciativa Gastro Bacchus, que propuso maridajes entre tapas originales y distintos vinos de la D.O. Vinos de Madrid, con el fin de acercar al gran público los caldos de la región. La iniciativa aprovecha la celebración del Concurso Internacional de Vinos Bacchus, que siempre tiene lugar en Madrid. Organizado por la Unión Española de Catadores
From 17 to 23 March, 16 establishments in the Barrio de las Letras took part in the Gastro Bacchus event, which offered pairings of original tapas with different D.O. Madrid wines, designed to bring the region’s wines closer to the general public. The initiative is timed to coincide with the Vinos Bacchus International Competition which is held in Madrid every year. Organized by Unión Española de Catadores
Candidatos a la alcaldía Como viene siendo habitual, la Asociación de Comerciantes del Barrio de las Letras envió una carta a los diferentes candidatos a la alcaldía de Madrid en las elecciones de mayo invitándoles a presentar su programa electoral en el barrio.
Candidates for Mayor As is customary, the Barrio de las Letras Traders Association has sent letters to all the candidates for May’s Madrid Mayoral elections, inviting them to present their electoral programmes in the neighbourhood.
ARCO en el Hotel Radisson El Barrio de las Letras se volcó con la Feria de Arte Contemporáneo, ARCO, que se celebró en Ifema entre el 21 de febrero y el 1 de marzo. Muchas de las galerías de arte del barrio realizaron actividades diferentes y programaron horarios especiales. Una de las iniciativas más vistosas fue la del Hotel Radisson, que instaló en su fachada la obra ‘PATTISSON’, del artista Manuel Caeiro. En la instalación participó la Galería Ponce+Robles.
ARCO at Hotel Radisson The Barrio de las Letras took an active role in support of the Contemporary Art Fair, ARCO, held at Ifema from 21 February to 1 March. Many of the area’s galleries held a number of activities and
scheduled special opening hours. One of the most attractive initiatives was the installation on the façade of the Hotel Radisson: ‘PATTISSON,’ a work by the artist Manuel Caeiro. The Ponce+Robles Gallery was also involved in the installation.

ACTUALIDAD NEWS Gastrofestival El Barrio de las Letras estuvo presente en Gastrofestival (del 31 de enero al 15 de febrero), la prestigiosa cita gastronómico-cultural en la que participan más de 400 empresas e instituciones. El Ayuntamiento de Madrid organiza, a través de la empresa municipal Madrid Destino y su Área de Turismo, en colaboración con Madrid Fusión, esta cita en distintos puntos de la capital, para destacar la gastronomía como uno de los grandes atractivos turísticos de la capital. Una vez más, el Barrio de las Letras se asienta como una de las zonas comerciales y turísticas de la ciudad al contar con varios establecimientos representados.

Mercado de las Ranas
El primer sábado de cada mes se celebra en el Barrio de las Letras el Mercado de las Ranas, una cita que se ha convertido ya en tradicional. Los días 3 de enero, 7 de febrero y 7 de marzo han sido las últimas fechas en las que se ha celebrado y, como viene siendo habitual, muchos establecimientos del barrio han sacado su oferta a la calle, con música y actuaciones para amenizar las compras. Las fachadas se llenaron de globos verdes y los visitantes pudieron comprar prendas de moda, productos de ‘delicatessen’ o catar vinos. Las siguientes citas con el Mercado de las Ranas serán el 4 de abril, el 2 de mayo y el 6 de junio.
The Frog Market On the first Saturday of every month the Barrio de las Letras is host to the Mercado de las Ranas or Frog Market which is fast becoming an established event. The market was recently held on 3 January, 7 February, and 7 March and, as usual, many shops and bars in the area brought their wares out into the streets, accom-

panied by music and performances to entertain visitors as they shopped. Shop fronts were decorated with green balloons, and visitors could browse stands selling fashionable clothing and delicatessen products and enjoy wine tastings. Upcoming editions of the Frog Market will be on 4 April, 2 May and 6 June.
The Barrio de las Letras also played a major part in Gastrofestival (from 31 January to 15 February), the prestigious gastronomic and cultural event organised with the participation of over 400 companies and institutions. The Ayuntamiento de Madrid organises the event through the municipal company Madrid Destino and its Tourism Department, in collaboration with Madrid Fusión. It takes place throughout different areas of the city and is designed to highlight capital’s gastronomy as a major tourist attractions. With many of its establishments represented at the event, once again the Barrio de la Letras was to the fore as one of Madrid’s prime commercial and tourist areas.

Concierto ‘Huellas de Luz’ El 26 de marzo, con motivo de la semana santa, Arianna Ensemble ofreció el concierto ‘Huellas de Luz’ en la Iglesia del Convento de las Trinitarias Descalzas. Dirigido por Daniel de la Puente, ofrecieron obras de compositores del siglo XVI y contemporáneos, como Tomás Luis de Victoria (15481611) o Arvo Pärt (1935).
Cervantes está en el Convento de las Trinitarias Es una de las grandes noticias culturales del año. El equipo de expertos que durante los últimos meses ha estado buscando los restos de Miguel de Cervantes en el Convento de las Trinitarias concluyeron sus trabajos el 17 de marzo con una certeza: aunque no es posible realizar la prueba de ADN, es altamente “probable” que los restos del autor de El Quijote se encuentren entre los que se han hallado en la cripta del convento.

The team of experts, who for months have been searching for the remains of Miguel de Cervantes at the Convento de las Trinitarias, concluded their work on 17 March with the firm conviction that, although DNA testing is not possible, it is highly “probable” that the remains found in the convent’s crypt are indeed those of the author of The Quixote.
‘Huellas de Luz’ Concert On 26 March, as part of the Semana Santa celebrations, the Arianna Ensemble gave a concert entitled ‘Huellas de Luz’ (traces of light) at the Iglesia del Convento de las Trinitarias Descalzadas. With Daniel de la Puente conducting, the audience were treated to works by 16th century and contemporary composers such as Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611) and Arvo Pärt (1935).
La noche de los libros El 23 de abril, Día Internacional del Libro, se celebra la iniciativa la ‘Noche de los Libros’. Durante la jornada hay programados recitales, debates, firmas de libros, cuentacuentos, conferencias, actividades infantiles, exposiciones, juegos, música, teatro, cine, talleres, charlas... En la celebración participan escritores, librerías, instituciones, la red de Bibliotecas de la Comunidad de Madrid y un buen número de centros culturales. Book Night
World Book Day on 23 April will see the celebration of Book Night. Throughout the day there will be a programme of recitals, debates, book signings, storytelling, lectures, children’s activities, exhibitions, games, music, theatre, cinema, workshops and talks. Many writers, bookshops, and public institutions will be taking part along with the Community of Madrid Library Network, and a number of cultural centres. iudad acostumbrada al sol y a la vida en la calle, entre Semana Santa y mediados de junio Madrid se despereza y toma brío. Y el Barrio de las Letras, uno de los más interesantes y con más historia de la ciudad, invita al paseo por sus plazas y calles peatonales -es uno de los barrios más emblemáticos para caminar sin rumbo-, y a perderse en sus comercios, sus librerías, galerías de arte y restaurantes. En primavera, el barrio nos sorprende con mil y un planes. Te contamos algunos. El Barrio de las Letras tiene su mercado callejero, similar al londinense Portobello Road o el parisino mercado de las pulgas de Saint-Ouen. Es el Mercado de las Ranas, y se celebra el primer sábado de cada mes. Cada edición, desde que se creó en 2012, se está volviendo más popular. Los comerciantes sacan sus mercan12

cías a la calle, hay catas, actuaciones musicales, teatro alternativo, exposiciones… Es un verdadero placer pasear esos días por el Barrio de las Letras, y mucho más con el buen tiempo que se avecina. Toma nota porque en primavera se celebra el 5 de abril, el 2 de mayo y el 7 de junio. Muchos dicen que los meses de abril, mayo y junio son los mejores para visitar Madrid. Después del frío del invierno, el ambiente está más templado y las noches empiezan a convertirse en bulliciosas. Es la época ideal para disfrutar de las terrazas que se despliegan en plazas como la de Matute, Santa Ana o Platería. Y cualquier día de la semana es perfecto para disfrutar de los fantásticos establecimientos del barrio, sobre todo con iniciativas como los Bartes, una invitación para ir de bares los martes y disfrutar, además de una buena caña, de conciertos, talleres, mi-

croteatro o monólogos. El 7 de abril y el 5 de mayo, esta iniciativa está presente en varios establecimientos del Barrio de las Letras (puedes localizar tu Bartes en www.bartes.es).
Historia a pie de calle El Barrio de las Letras es una de las zonas con más historia de Madrid. Una de las mejores formas de conocerlo es a través de una visita guiada, donde nos contarán todos los secretos de sus calles. El Ayuntamiento realiza, todos los días del año, visitas guiadas oficiales por el Barrio de las Letras. El recorrido empieza en la Plaza Mayor y, de la mano de Miguel de Cervantes, se descubre lo esencial del barrio. El recorrido finaliza en la Plaza de las Cortes, junto al Paseo del Prado (se puede estar al tanto de las próximas visitas guiadas en la página web del Ayuntamiento, www.esmadrid. com/programa-visitas-guiadas-oficiales/). Por último, DecorAcción cerrará la estación con mucho estilo. Es la gran cita de la decoración y el interiorismo y, este año, se celebra entre el 11 y el 14 de junio. Las fachadas de los establecimientos del barrio se decoran y las tiendas de decoración y las galerías sacan sus mercancías a la calle. Todo un lujo. Y, como siempre, en el barrio, uno de los más dinámicos culturalmente de la capital, también te esperan los teatros, los museos, los fantásticos restaurantes y cafeterías, las tiendas con las últimas tendencias… Todo para disfrutar de la primavera. hhh

A city well used to sunshine and street life, Madrid seems to wake up and gain a new lustre between Easter and mid June. And the Barrio de las Letras, one of the most interesting and historic neighbourhoods in the city, invites visitors to stroll around its squares and pedestrian streets: one of the best areas for wandering about and enjoying the atmosphere. Lose yourself in the different shops, galleries, bookshops and restaurants. In spring, the neighbourhood is full of surprises and interesting ideas for things to do. Here are just a few. The Barrio de las Letras has its own street market, just like London’s Portobello Road or the Paris’s Saint-Ouen. Known as the Mercado de las Ranas or Frog Market, it is held on the first Saturday of every month. Since it began in 2012, the market has become increasingly popular. Traders bring their wares out into the street; there are wine tastings, musical performances, alternative theatre and exhibitions. It is always a pleasure to stroll through the Barrio de las Letras, but particularly so when the good weather comes. Take note, the Spring dates for the market are 5 April, 2 May and 7 June. It is often said that April, May and June are the best months to visit Madrid. After the cold of winter, the weather gets warmer and nights get livelier.
It is the ideal time to sit and enjoy the terraces of Plaza Matute, Santa Ana or Platería. And any day of the week is perfect to enjoy the neighbourhood’s bars and restaurants, especially with initiatives like Bartes: an invitation to visit bars of a Tuesday and enjoy concerts workshops, microtheatre and stand-up comedy along with your refreshing caña. On 7 April and 5 May, several bars in the Barrio de las Letras will be participating in this initiative (find your Bartes at www.bartes.es). History on the Streets The Barrio de las Letras is one of Madrid’s most historic neighbourhoods. One of the best ways to get to know it is with a guided tour, where you can unlock all the secrets of its ancient streets. The City Council organises official guided tours of the Barrio de las Letras every day of the year. The route begins in Plaza Mayor and with Miguel de Cervantes at hand, you will discover the landmarks and the history of the area. The route ends at Plaza de las Cortes, next to the Paseo del Prado (you can find out about upcoming guided tours at www.esmadrid.com/programa-visitas-guiadas-oficiales/). Finally, DecorAcción rounds off the spring season in great style. It is the big event in the interior design and decorating calendar this year it will be held from 11 to 14 June. The neighbourhood’s shop fronts and façades are decorated and the design shops and galleries will be displaying their merchandise in the streets. A touch of luxury. As always, in the barrio, one of the most culturally dynamic neighbourhoods in the city, you will find plenty of theatres, museums, fantastic restaurants and cafes and shops with the latest fashions and trends. La noche de los libros Book Night La primavera en el Barrio de las Letras -hogar de genios universales de la literatura española como Cervantes, Quevedo o Lope de Vega- tiene una fecha importantísima: el 23 de abril. Es el Día Internacional del Libro –se conmemora la muerte, ese mismo día de 1616, de Miguel de Cervantes y William Shakespeare- y, en Madrid, se celebra con la iniciativa la ‘Noche de los Libros’. Durante la jornada hay programados recitales, debates, firmas de libros, cuentacuentos, conferencias, actividades infantiles, exposiciones, juegos, música, teatro, cine, talleres, charlas... En total, el año pasado se organizaron más de 600 eventos con la literatura como protagonista. En esta gran celebración de las letras participan autores, librerías, instituciones, la red de Bibliotecas de la Comunidad de Madrid y un buen número de centros culturales. Además, se despliegan mercadillos de libros a pie de calle en varios puntos de la ciudad con jugosos descuentos. Nuestra asociación participa en colaboración con la Escuela de Esgrima Ateneo Barrio de las Letras Aunque cualquiera es un buen día para darse un paseo por el Barrio de las Letras, en esa fecha la visita se hace, casi, obligada. El barrio cuenta con un buen número de centros culturales que programan iniciativas para ese día –también lo hacen, toma nota, muchos de los comercios de la zona- y, además, encontramos todo un universo de librerías que harán las delicias de cualquier amante de la literatura. Springtime in the Barrio de las Letras -home to literary geniuses such as Cervantes, Quevedo and Lope de Vega- brings one very special date: 23 April. It is World Book Day and also the day on which we commemorate the deaths, in 1616, of Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare. Madrid celebrates with the ‘Noche de los Libros’ – Book Night. Throughout the day there will be recitals, debates, book signings, storytelling, lectures, children’s activities, exhibitions, games, music, theatre, cinema, workshops and talks. Last year there were over 600 events, with literature at the centre of all the activities. This great celebration of the arts will feature authors, book shops, cultural organisations, t h e Co m m u n i t y o f Madrid Library Network and a number of cultural centres. There will also be street markets selling books all over the city, with fantastic discounts. Our association participates in colaboration with Escuela de Esgrima Ateneo Barrio de las Letras. Although any day that is ideal for wandering round the Barrio de las Letras, this day makes for something unique. The neighbourhood has numerous cultural centres that will be hosting events, as will many shops in the area. You will find all manner of bookshops where booklovers can happily browse and while away the time. ¿Hasta qué punto va a identificar el Teatro Español con el Barrio de las Letras? Va a haber sorpresas, ya que hay que hacer un gran homenaje al Barrio de las Letras, situándole en Europa. Se tiene que saber lo que este barrio ha significado, ningún barrio en el mundo tiene tanta cantidad de ilustres de la cultura concentrados en un área, con autores del Siglo de Oro, de los siglos XIX y XX… Somos una potencia en legado cultural, y hay que apostar por ello. Cuando ‘heredas’ un teatro de este tipo, dices: ‘‘Vamos a conocer a Harold 16

Pinter,'' pero primero, presentemos y reivindiquemos lo nuestro, es de sentido común. ¿Cuál es su vinculación con el barrio? Mucha, ya que me gusta pasear por sus calles y, por ejemplo, he organizado la presentación del Día Mundial del Teatro en la Casa Lope de Vega, aquí al lado. Quien no conoce el Barrio de las Letras, algo le falta. El barrio tiene mucho que decir, y hay que escucharlo. Volviendo a nuestra vinculación con él, anuncio que en 2016 vamos

a hacer un Don Juan en torno a la Noche de Santos , con Don Juan, el barrio y los madrileños y sus visitantes como protagonistas: 20 escenas, tanto en las calles, como en televisores instalados en MediaLab, otras en casas. Y queremos que aparezca nuestro nombre en el edificio de la Plaza de Santa Ana con letras bien grandes, porque somos el Teatro Español. Cervantes estará presente… Sin duda, tenemos que hacer el gran homenaje a la segunda parte de ‘El Quijote’. Cervantes fue un desubicado, ya que cuando llegó al teatro, Lope le dijo que no; en la poesía, los poetas que no… y apareció esa joya, el comienzo de la modernidad que es ‘El Quijote', más las ‘Novelas Ejemplares'. El 27 de febrero se ha cumplido el cuarto centenario de la segunda edición de ‘El Quijote’, y el año que viene se conmemoran el 400 aniversario de la muerte de Cervantes y de la de Shakespeare. ¿Cuál es la dimensión artística del Teatro Español? Es el edificio más antiguo del mundo con programación continuada, más que The Globe, el Teatro de la Ville, etc. El solar ya acoge en 1583 El Corral del Príncipe. Es la joya de la corona de la ciudad de Madrid: si no has pasado por el Español, tienes una asignatura pendiente. Esto son Las Ventas, donde tienes que salir por la puerta grande… ¿Y ofrece unos precios competitivos? Mucho. El más barato de Europa. Entre 18 y 20 euros, y el Día del Espectador lo bajamos a la mitad… No es caro, de verdad. Han bajado los precios del cine, pero hubo tiempos en los que eran casi 10 euros, y hablamos de una industria, el teatro es artesanía. No quiero una butaca vacía, pero tampoco engordar las arcas del ayuntamiento a costa de los ciudadanos, al revés, hay que ofrecer unos precios populares. Y representar, siempre digo ‘‘Ante la duda, representemos’’. El teatro no es literatura dramática, sucede cuando una actriz o actor hace suyos los conflictos del personaje, sube al escenario y se contamina de la sociedad de su tiempo. Eso es el hecho teatral, la emoción del contacto con el público. ¿Qué puede destacar de la programación 2015-2016? La presentaremos en mayo, pero ya hemos firmado una gran coproducción con el teatro San Martín de Buenos Aires, que es la adaptación teatral de ‘El cerco de Numancia’, de Cervantes. Y estrenaremos ‘Pingüinas’, de Fernando Arrabal, en Naves del Español-Matadero, uno de los espacios más innovadores de Europa. Y también haremos teatro popular, en el Fernán Gómez, un lugar elegido por los madrileños y una pequeña sala siempre llena. Habrá mucho que ver, como en junio, también en
It’s almost 35 years since he directed his first play, just one part of a life dedicated to the theatre. Director and Producer and former director of the National Drama Centre (from 1996 to 2004), today he is spearheading a root and branch reform not only of the Teatro Español but also other Madrid theatres such as the Naves del Español in the Matadero, the Conde Duque and the Fernán-Gomez Centro Cultural de la Villa. To what extent are you going to identify the Teatro Español with the Barrio de las Letras? There’ll be some surprises, because we have to pay great tribute to the Barrio de las Letras, situating it within Europe. People have to know what this neighbourhood has meant; no other neighbourhood in the world has the sheer quantity of illustrious figures of the arts concentrated in one area, with Golden Age authors, 19th and 20th century writers... we are a powerhouse of cultural legacy, and we have to hitch ourselves to that. When you “inherit” a theatre like this, you say “We’re going to put on Harold Pinter, but first let’s put on and reclaim our own theatre,” it makes sense. What are your links with the neighbourhood? Lots, I love walking its streets and, for example, I organised the presentation of World Theatre Day at the Casa Lope de Vega Museum here next door. If somebody doesn’t know the Barrio de las Letras, that person is missing some-

thing. The neighbourhood has a lot to say, and we have to listen. Going back to our links with it, I can announce that in 2016 we’re going to do a Don Juan on All Saints Night, with Don Juan, the neighbourhood, Madrileños and visitors as protagonists: 20 stages, in the streets and on televisions installed in MediaLab, and others in houses. And we want our name to appear in great big letters on the building in Plaza Santa Ana, because we are the Teatro Español. Cervantes will be present... Without doubt, we have to pay great tribute to the second part of the The Quixote. Cervantes was an outcast, when he tried theatre, Lope told him no; poetry, the poets said no... And then this gem appears, the beginning of modernity that is The Quixote and the Exemplary Novels. 27 February saw the four hundredth anniversary of the publishing of The Quixote Part II, and next year we celebrate the 400th anniversary of the deaths of Cervantes and Shakespeare. What is the artistic dimension of the Teatro Español? It’s the oldest building in the world with a continuous programme, older than The Globe, The Théâtre de la Ville, etc. In 1538 it was home to the Corral del Principe. It is the jewel in the crown of Madrid: if you haven’t been to the Español, it should be on your list. This is like Las Ventas, where you have to go out through the Big Door. hhh

Alberto Velázquez And are prices competitive? Very much so. The cheapest in Europe. Between 18 and 20 Euros, and on the weekly Day of the Spectator we slash it in half... It’s not expensive, really. Cinema prices have come down but there was a time when it was almost 10 Euros, and we’re talking about an industry; the theatre is artisanal. I don’t want any empty seats, but nor do I want to fill the Council’s coffers at the expense of the citizens; on the contrary, you have to offer reasonable prices. And represent, I always say “if in doubt, represent.” Theatre is not dramatic literature; it happens when an actor or actress makes the conflicts of a character their own, walks out onto the stage and is infected by the society of the time. This is the act of theatre, the emotion of contact with the audience. What will stand out in the 2015-2016 Programme? We’ll present it in May, but we’ve already signed off on a great co-production with the Teatro San Martín in Buenos Aires, which is the theatrical adaptation of Cervantes’s El cerco de Numancia and

we’ll premiere Pingüinas, by Fernando Arrabal in Naves del Español-Matadero, one of the most innovative spaces in Europe. And we’ll also put on popular theatre at the Fernán Gómez, a place chosen by Madrileños and a small space that’s always full. There’ll be a lot to see, like in June, also in the Teatro Sanmartín, El arquitecto y el emperador de Asiria; the representation of a Lope de Vega text that has appeared in the National Library, Señoras y criados; El discurso del rey; the adaptation of a Max Aub essay, Crímenes ejemplares, titled Tengo tantas personalidades que cuando digo te quiero no sé quien soy. Lots of work ahead... Well, yes, because as well as renaming some smaller theatres and creating the Espacio Pérez Galdós (see graphic) there’s one more thing left to do which is to spread theatre through the schools, so we’re going to offer tours; we’ll propose the creation of Friends of the Teatro Español – we’d like Doña Sofia to be the Honorary President-; we’ll offer full season-tickets, not by trimester... there’s lots to do.

Novedades / News El pasado 9 de marzo, Pérez de la Fuente anunció en el recien creado Espacio Pérez Galdós, dentro del Teatro Español, los nuevos nombres de Margarita Xirgu, Fernando Arrabal, Max Aub, Jardiel Poncela y Buero Vallejo para salas de los espacios municipales de la capital. Al acto acudieron la alcaldesa de Madrid, Ana Botella y el delegado de las Artes, Deportes y Turismo, Pedro Corral, que pudieron ‘estrenar’ este espacio que recuperará, cada lunes, el espíritu de las tertulias de los cafés madrileños. En la mesa estuvieron también los actores Concha Velasco y José Sacristán y la peluquera del Español Antoñita, viuda de Ruiz, que forman, junto con Mario Vargas Llosa, las nuevas incorporaciones de esta ‘galería de ilustres’. Juan Carlos Pérez de la Fuente detalló para BDLL la esencia de esta novedad: ‘‘Paseas por teatros de París y Londres, y ves cómo en las paredes está colgada su historia. Dedicamos el Espacio Pérez Galdós al autor, entre muchas obras, de los ‘Episodios Nacionales’… y al que fue director de esta casa’. On 9 March Juan Carlos Pérez de la Fuente announced, in the recently created Espacio Pérez Galdós at the Teatro Español, that the capital’s smaller municipal theatres would bear the names of Margarita Xirgu, Fernando Arrabal, Max Aub, Jardiel Poncela and Buero Vallejo. The event was attended by Madrid’s Mayor Ana Botella and the Madrid Government’s Delegate for Arts, Sports and Tourism, Pedro Corral, who were able to enjoy for the first time this space which, every Monday, will recreate the spirit of the intellectual debates of Madrid’s cafés. Also at the table were actors Concha Velasco and José Sacristán and the Español’s hairstylist Antoñita Viuda de Ruiz, who, along with Mario Vargas Llosa, are the latest additions to this Hall of Fame. Juan Carlos Pérez de la Fuente detailed for BDDL the essence of this news: “You visit theatres in Paris and London, and you see that they have their history hanging on the walls. We dedicate the Espacio Pérez Galdós to the author of, among other works, Episodios Nacionales and who was also director of this house.”

The founder started making guitars in his grandmother’s house, and his son continues the tradition, adding a special touch to the wood and strings, making him a reference of his field in Madrid.
In our 21st century tour of the most historic local business of the Barrio de las Letras we encounter once again a number of outlets defined by that special touch, preserved over the decades. uería ser una dentista de barrio, de confianza, donde mis pacientes sean personas, no números. Lo mío es el trato personalizado y cada paciente tiene necesidades diferentes”. Almudena Sánchez es la propietaria de Smile Factory, la nueva clínica dental que, desde hace unos meses, se ha instalado en la Calle Moratín. El espacio tiene una estética moderna en la que predomina el blanco. Almudena quería un lugar donde apeteciera entrar. “No huele a dentista”, nos hace notar. El diseño ha estado a cargo del arquitecto Daniel Ruiz. Junto a Almudena trabajan otras dos odontólogas y, entre las tres, cubren todo tipo de especialidades relacionadas con la salud bucodental. Son expertas, sobre
todo, en ortodoncia invisible, implantes inmediatos –“no te vas de aquí sin dientes, sino con una bonita sonrisa”, dice Almudena- y también ponen carillas. “Como las de los famosos”. What I offer is personalised service and every patient has different needs.” Almudena Sánchez is the owner of Smile Factory, the new dental clinic that a few months ago opened on Calle Moratín. The space has a modern appearance where white predominates. Almudena wanted a place that was inviting to enter. “It doesn’t smell like a dentist’s,” she notes. The clinic was designed by architect Daniel Ruiz. Two other odontologists work

alongside Almudena and, between the three of them, they cover every type of speciality relating to dental hygiene. They are experts, above all, in invisible orthodontics, immediate dental implants – “you don’t walk out of here without teeth but with a nice smile,” says Almudena – and they also offer veneers. “Just like the celebrities.” What’s more, prices are reasonable. Loyal to the maxim of offering a friendly treatment and “giving the neighbourhood its smile back,” Smile Factory also hosts events and temporary exhibitions.

Del Domingo de Ramos al Domingo de Resurrección, el centro de Madrid se llena de fervor espiritual. Y, como cada año, el Barrio de las Letras se suma a esta celebración con iniciativas culturales y acogiendo en sus calles algunos de los pasos más representativos de la ciudad. From Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday and the Resurrection, the centre of Madrid is gripped with spiritual zeal. And, as every year, the Barrio de las Letras joins in the celebrations with cultural events and some of the most remarkable processions in the city.

a Semana Santa en Madrid no tiene nada que envidiar a la de otros lugares de España. Desde el Domingo de Ramos, las procesiones se adueñan del centro de la capital. Ese mismo domingo destaca la procesión que sale del Convento de las Madres Trinitarias, en pleno Barrio de las Letras, hacia la Iglesia de San Sebastián. Uno de los momentos culminantes es cuando las monjas cantan desde las ventanas. El Domingo de Ramos por la tarde también pasa por el barrio la procesión de Nuestro Padre Jesús del Amor (La Borriquita). Concretamente, pasa por la Plaza del Ángel y la Calle de San Sebastián. Sin embargo, son las procesiones del jueves, viernes y sábado santos las que más devotos reúnen. El jueves son especialmente significativas las de Nuestro Padre Jesús del Gran Poder y María Santísima de la Esperanza, y la de Jesús Nazareno y la Virgen de la Soledad. Mientras, el viernes santo congregan una gran 26

cantidad de fieles las de María Santísima de los Siete Dolores, el Santo Entierro y las dos que recorren el Barrio de las Letras: Jesús Nazareno de Medinacelli y la Hermandad del Silencio. La de Jesús de Medinacelli es una de las procesiones más populares de Madrid: llega a congregar a unas 800.000 personas. Está organizada por la Archicofradía Primaria de la Real e Ilustre Esclavitud de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno de Medinaceli, fundada en 1710, y el paso está formado por una imagen de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno del siglo XVII y por una de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores en su Mayor Soledad, elaborada por Rafael García Irurozqui en 1948. La tarde-noche del viernes santo, las calles del Barrio de las Letras también son testigos de la procesión de la Hermandad del Silencio, fundada en 1940. Portado por una cuadrilla de costaleros, el paso del Santísimo Cristo de la Fe recorre lugares tan emblemáticos del barrio como las plazas de Matute o Santa Ana.
COVER Por último, el sábado santo se celebran las procesiones de la Virgen Dolorosa y la de la Soledad. A las procesiones se unen también otros actos culturales que, este año, vienen marcados por el quinto centenario del nacimiento de Santa Teresa de Jesús. Así, el festival de música sacra ‘Música y Voz para la Pasión’tiene programados conciertos en diferentes templos hasta el 5 de abril. La programación se completa con exposiciones, teatro, conciertos… Para vivir la Semana Santa en Madrid desde todos los prismas. S.M. Semana Santa in Madrid is on a par with any of the other Spanish Easter destinations. From Palm Sunday, processions overrun the city centre. The day’s major procession leaves the Convento de las Madres Trinitarias in the heart of the Barrio de las Letras, making its way to the Iglesia de San Sebastián. One of the highlights of this procession is the nuns singing from the windows. On Palm Sunday, the procession of Nuestro Padre Jesus del Amor or La Borriquita will also pass through the neighbourhood, on Plaza del Ángel and Calle de San Sebastián. However, it is the processions held on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Saturday that attract the highest number of devotees. Holy Thursday sees the particularly significant processions of Nuestro Padre del Gran Poder, Maria Santístima de la Esperanza, and those of Jesús Nazareno and La Virgen de la Soledad. On Good Friday the faithful come to watch those of María Santísima de los Siete Dolores, el Santo Entierro (Holy Burial) and two other processions that pass through the Barrio de las Letras, Jesús Nazareno de Medinaceli and the Hermandad del Silencio (Brotherhood of Silence). The procession of Jesús de Mediancelli is one of the most popular of its kind in Madrid, sometimes attracting up to 800,000 onlookers. It is
organised by the Archicofradía Primaria de la Real e Ilustre Esclavitud de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno de Medinaceli, a society founded in 1710 which carries the 17th century image of Jesus of Nazareth, together with a sculpture depicting Nuestra Señora de los Dolores en su Gran Soledad, created by Rafael Garcia Irurozqui in 1948. During the evening and night of Good Friday, the streets of the Barrio de las Letras are also witness to the procession of the Hermandad del Silencio, founded in 1940. Borne by a team of specially trained carriers known as “costaleros”, the image of the Santisíma Cristo de la Fe (Holy Christ of the Faith) passes through the neighbourhood’s famous streets and crossing Plaza Matute and Plaza Santa Ana. Finally, on Easter Saturday, the Virgen de la Dolores and Virgen de la Soledad processions are held. In addition to the processions, several other cultural activities take place, which this year are marked by the fifth centenary of the birth of Saint Teresa of Jesus. Thus the religious music festival Musica y Voz para la Pasión will feature a programme of concerts to be held in various churches in the week leading up to 5 April. Run by Paula and Marcos, from Chile and Argentina respectively, and local residents – “we’ve fallen in love with the area”–, they have ample experience in the hospitality and distribution sectors. “The idea is that people can interact with our products which are organic and of the best quality–, that they can try them, smell them. A serve-yourself-as-muchas-you-want concept. You don’t have to wait to be served. There’s something of everything and if we don’t have what you’re looking for and it’s not easy to find, we’ll get it for you. And at a reasonable price, we don’t want to charge a

fortune; we want it to be accessible.” They will assist any customer who wishes, and help meet their tastes, be it a spice to be consumed immediately or something to take abroad – they are served in glass tubes or can be vacuum-packed–. Paprika from La Vera, a spicy Argentine chilli, curry, cumin, chimichurri, dill –it’s not all easy to find–, white tea, red tea and black tea, carob powder. They also stock a range of gluten-free products for coeliacs, such as flour. There are herbs that offer relief from colds, headaches or digestion problems, Belgian chocolate, six types of coffee –aloe vera, organic dried ginger and blueberries are some of the best sellers–... it all adds up to a dream team of colours, aromas and flavours.

Almost 60 stalls and all occupied: the Antón Martín Market succeeds in its blend of traditional businesses, innovative offers and excellent customer service, making it the ideal place not only for a day’s or week’s shopping but also as a gastronomic and social meeting place. We speak to Javier Casado, President of the Market Traders Association and he tells us about everything this food emporium has to offer for its visitors.

El Mercado de Anton Martín ha asentado su propuesta de comercio tradicional y ofertas innovadoras con un excelente servicio al cliente, lo que le ha convertido en un lugar idóneo no solo para hacer la compra del día o la semana, sino también en un punto de encuentro gastronómico y de ocio. Hablamos con Javier Casado, el presidente de la asociación de comericantes del mercado para repasar todo lo que este enclave ofrece a sus visitantes.
- ¿Cómo funciona, básicamente, la asociación? - Nos encargamos de la gestión integral de este mercado municipal, para defender sus intereses del mercado, así como de la gestión de los distintos trámites y procesos como limpieza, seguridad, servicios externos de los que, al final de cada ejercicio, se rinden cuentas al ayuntamiento. En este sentido, somos distintos a otros mercados municipales. La gestora – presidente, vicepresidente y vocales – se renueva periódicamente, con información en todo momento a todos los asociados, y se convocan reuniones para los asuntos de mayor importancia. - ¿Cuál es su relación con las instituciones públicas? - Procuramos, por ejemplo, que nos cuide la competencia con las grandes superficies, que no nos las pongan pegadas a nosotros, y que tengamos presencia en la publicidad institucional. Además, solicitamos ayudas a Comunidad, Ayuntamiento, Cámara de Comercio e Industria, como pueda solicitar, por otra parte, cualquier autónomo por su cuenta. Esperamos que el apoyo sea mayor y que los responsables de las instituciones consigan sacar adelante lo que nos comentan o anuncian.

- ¿Cuál es el punto fuerte del Mercado de Antón Martín? - El consumidor se está dando cuenta de que somos un servicio más cercano, con mayor calidad e, incluso, con mejor precio, aunque parezca mentira, sobre todo en producto fresco. Las grandes superficies pueden hacer ofertas puntuales, o perder dinero en algunos productos para ganar en el resto, pero nosotros cumplimos, como se demuestra día a día, con precios menores. La gente está volviendo a los mercados. - ¿Y cómo asientan estos valores? - Estamos procurando que el Mercado de Antón Martín vuelva a ser lo que siempre ha sido: un lugar de encuentro, donde los clientes pueden hablar del día a día, del barrio, etc., y estamos intentando fomentarlo con zonas comunes, la oferta hostelera para tomarte un café, desayunar, etc. Algo más que comprar. El cliente encuentra calidad, servicio y precio, y con una diversificación evidente: se venden algas, productos de otros países –tenemos un japonés que es una referencia en Madridhay rincones de distintas partes del mundo, etc. Atraemos a un público tradicional, pero también jóvenes, aficionados a la gastronomía… estamos abiertos a todos, con ejemplos como los sábados, en los que hay numerosos clientes que aprovechan para comprar y, de paso, tomar el aperitivo o comer en cualquiera de los puestos especializados.. - How, basically, does the association work? - We take responsibility for the basic management of this municipal market, to look out for the interests of the market, and the management of different processes like cleaning, security... the external services in relation to which, at the end of the year, accounts are submitted to the Council. In that sense, we’re different from other municipal markets. The management –president, vice-president and board members– is renewed regularly; all associates are duly informed at all times and meetings for the most important issues are called. - What is your relationship with the public institutions? - We try to insure that, for example, they protect our competitiveness with the large supermarkets, that they don’t allow them to open next door and that we are present in institutional promotion material. What’s more, we apply for assistance from the Regional Government, the Council and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as can any self-employed individual for their own part. We hope for greater support and that the institutions manage to see it through with what they comment and announce to us. - What is the strength of the Mercado de San Antón? - The consumer is beginning to realise that we offer a more intimate service, with greater quality and even better prices, although it may be hard to believe, especially with fresh produce. The large supermarkets can have special offers from time to time, or lose money on some products to profit on others, but we make good on lower prices day to day. People are coming back to the markets. - And how do these values sit?? - We’re making sure that the Mercado de Antón Martín remains what it always has been: a meeting place, where customers can chat about their daily lives, the neighbourhood... and we’re trying to generate that with common areas, the catering offering: to have a coffee or breakfast, etc. Something more than just shopping. The customer can find quality, service and value and diversification is evident: there’s seaweed, products from other countries –we have a Japanese stall that’s known throughout Madrid– there are little corners from different parts of the world, etc. We attract a traditional clientele, but also young people, food lovers... we’re open to everyone. Saturdays are a great example, when lots of customers come to shop and, while they’re here, have a snack or lunch at one of the specialised stalls.

l 28 de marzo se cumplió el quinto centenario del nacimiento de Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada, Santa Teresa de Jesús (también Teresa de Ávila), pero todo 2015 acoge el reconocimiento a esta figura universal, recordada y homenajeada en una ciudad muy bien comunicada con el Barrio de las Letras. Precisamente en Madrid –donde también se conmemora su figura, por ejemplo con una exposición en la Biblioteca Nacional–, Santa Teresa de Jesús impulsó, junto con San Juan de la Cruz, el convento de Santa Ana, en lo que es actualmente la Plaza de Santa Ana, 48

en pleno 'Siglo de Oro' de la historia y la cultura españolas. Valencia y Valladolid son algunas de las ciudades que se suman a este homenaje. Recordar a Teresa de Ávila Recorrer las calles de Ávila supone evocar el paso por ellas de la fundadora de las carmelitas descalzas. Por ejemplo, la propia Catedral, o la Iglesia y el Convento de Santa Teresa, erigidos en su casa natal, que albergan el actual museo teresiano y la sala de reliquias, o la Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, de origen

románico y en la que fue bautizada –aún se conserva la pila bautismal-, además de otro punto de encuentro fundamental con su historia: el monasterio de la Encarnación, donde permaneció desde 1535 hasta 1574. Otros enclaves destacados son el Monasterio de San José –Las Madres– la primera fundación de Santa Teresa de Jesús; el Convento de Nuestra Señora de Gracia, donde la internaron en contra de su voluntad; el Palacio de Núñez Vela, donde residía su padrino de bautismo, el que fuera primer virrey de Perú; Los Cuatro Postes, un mirador donde se dice que encontraron a Teresa cuando intentaba ir, con su hermano, hacia ‘tierra de moros’ para sufrir martirio; el puente sobre el río Adaja, que era la vía acceso a la ciudad si se venía desde el norte; la Casa de Doña Guiomar; la Iglesia de Santo Tomé el Viejo; la Basílica de San Vicente… toda una propuesta de turismo cultural para rememorar el tiempo y la obra de esta ilustre mujer abulense. 'Las Edades del Hombre' Además de estas propuestas, destacan el Centro de Interpretación de la Mística, único en Europa al abordar desde distintas vías artísticas el fenómeno místico. Y, muy recomendables, las exposiciones de ‘Las Edades del Hombre’ que, con el título ‘Teresa de Jesús, maestra de oración’, y desde el 24 de marzo al 15 de noviembre, se distribuye en tres espacios de Ávila – el Convento de Nuestra Señora de Gracia, la Capilla de Mosén Rubí y la iglesia de San Juan Bautista– y uno de Alba de Tormes, Salamanca: Basílica de Santa Teresa. It was, precisely, in Madrid –where she will also be remembered, for example with an exhibition at the Biblioteca Nacional– that Saint Teresa, along with Saint John of the Cross, founded the convent of Santa Ana, where the Plaza Santa Ana now stands, in the Golden Age of Spanish Culture. Valencia and Vallodolid are some of the other cities joining in this celebration. Remembering Teresa of Ávila Walking the streets of Ávila means walking in the footsteps of the founder of the Discalced Carmelites. For example, the Catedral, or Iglesia de Santa Teresa, constructed on the site of the house where she was born, which houses the Teresian museum and the relics room, or the Iglesia de San Juan de la Cruz, of Roman origin, in which she was baptised and where the baptismal bowl still remains. Another fundamental site in history of the saint is the Monasterio de la Encarnación, where she lived from 1535 to 1574. Other important sites are Monasterio de San José –Las Madres– the first BDLL

founded by Saint Teresa of Jesus; the Convento de Nuestra Señora de Gracia, where she was interred against her will; the Palacio de Nuñez Vela, where her godfather, the first Viceroy of Peru, resided; The Four Posts, a shrine where, it is said, she was found attempting to run away with her brother to the land of the Moors in a bid for martyrdom; the bridge over the Adaja River, entry point to the city if coming from the North; the House of Doña Guiomar; the Iglesia de San Tomé el Viejo; the Basilica de San Vicente... a substantial offering of cultural tourism to remember the time and the works of this illustrious woman from Ávila. 'The Ages of Man' In addition to the above there is the Mysticism Interpretation Centre, unique in Europe in addressing the phenomenon of mysticism from different artistic angles. Also recommended are the exhibitions of “Las Edades del Hombre” (The Ages of Men) which, with the title “Santa Teresa de Jesús, maestra de oración” (Saint Teresa, Master Orator), from 24 March to 15 November is spread over three spaces in Ávila –the Convento de Nuestra Señora de Gracia, the Capilla de Mosén Rubí and the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista-, and one in Alba de Tormes, Salamanca: the Basílica de Santa Teresa. EN EL BARRIO / IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD ‘‘In the last 20 years, I’ve changed houses, but never neighbourhoods” Nathalie, who poses with her dog Pepe, has a long relationship with the neighbourhood. So much so that a local institution carries her surname above the door: her family have run Capas Seseña (page 19) for several generations. The cinema, theatre and television actress –and star of Telecinco’s popular La que se avecina series– tells us the reasons for basing herself in this part of Madrid.

‘‘Desde hace 20 años, he cambiado de casa, pero no de barrio''
N
athalie, que posa junto con su perro Pepe, tiene una estrecha relación con el barrio… tanto, que hasta un ‘clásico popular’ de la zona lleva su apellido, ya que su familia regenta Capas Seseña (ver pág. 19) desde hace varias generaciones. Repasamos con la actriz de cine, teatro y televisión –como la popular serie de Telecinco ‘La que se avecina–’ sus razones para disfrutar de esta zona de Madrid. ¿Cómo llegaste a vivir aquí? Siempre me encantó la plaza de Antón Martín, su mercado, cómo daba el sol a primera hora de la mañana… Alquilé una casa hace 20 años y, desde entonces, he cambiado de casa, pero no de barrio. Pese a estar en pleno centro hay, salvo los fines de semana nocturnos, tranquilidad y calma. Estar rodeada de teatros y museos, la filmoteca, los montones de pequeños comercios… por no hablar de la cantidad de posibilidades para comer, beber o bailar... y esa Plaza de Santa Ana, con su teatro y su hotel, siempre llena de vida, con el Retiro tan cerca... e imaginar que por aquí caminaban Lope de Vega, Cervantes... Al teatro voy siempre, me encanta, sobre todo al Español, aunque visito todos los que puedo. Espero con ansia que abran de nuevo el maravilloso Teatro de la Comedia (calle Príncipe), cerrado por obras demasiado tiempo...

Y también lo disfruta Pepe, tu perro… Sí, Pepe es maravilloso, y estoy encantada con la cantidad de locales en los que podemos entrar juntos a comer, beber comprar... en Europa no ponen tantos problemas con las mascotas, pero aquí va todavía todo muy lento, ¡pero ya hay muchos sitios en este barrio que dan la bienvenida a las mascotas! ¿Qué nos puedes comentar del negocio de la familia Seseña? Por aquí andaban mis antepasados... y su negocio, Capas Seseña, fundado por mi bisabuelo en 1901. Ha vestido a Valle Inclán, Picasso, Camilo José Cela y a tantos otros… es un orgullo que, a pesar de todas las modas y sus cambios, permanezca en la calle de la Cruz con la belleza de entonces y su impecable trabajo artesanal. ¿Cómo notas en la calle el éxito de una serie como ‘La que se avecina’? Estoy feliz con colaborar en que la gente se ría, me encanta reírme. Nunca imaginé participar en un trabajo como actriz tanto tiempo… ¡Un lujo! La respuesta de la gente es increíble y disfruto… aunque, a veces, ir a comprar el pan me suponga una hora (ríe). En junio empezaremos a grabar la novena temporada, así que ahora aprovecho para realizar un montón de proyectos personales y viajar, una de mis pasiones.
How did you come to live here? I had always loved Plaza Antón Martín, its market, how it caught the sun first thing in the morning... I rented a place 20 years ago and, since then, I’ve changed houses but never changed neighbourhoods. Despite being in the centre, except for weekend nights, there is peace and quiet. It’s full of theatres and museums, La Filmoteca, lots of small businesses, not to mention the amount of places to eat, drink and dance... And Plaza Santa Ana, with its theatre and hotel, is always full of life, with the Retiro so close... It’s funny to think that Lope de Vega or Cervantes all walked around here... I go to the theatre a lot; I love it, especially the Teatro Español, although I visit as many as I can. I’m really looking forward to the reopening of the wonderful Teatro de la Comedia (Calle Príncipe), which has been closed for renovation far too long. And Pepe, your dog, also likes it... Yes, Pepe is the best, and I’m really happy about how many places there are where we can go in and eat together, drink, shop... In Europe there aren’t so many problems with pets but here everything happens very slowly. However, there are lots of places in this area that welcome pets! What can you tell us about the Seseña family business? My ancestors passed through here, and their business, Capas Sesña, founded by my greatgrandfather in 1901. He dressed Valle Inclán, Picasso, Camilo José Cela and many others... I’m very proud that, despite all the changes in fashion, it’s still on Calle de la Cruz with its period beauty and impeccable artisan workmanship. How do you notice the success of La que se avecina in the street? I’m happy to help people laugh, I love to laugh. I never imagined having this gig for so long... It’s such a privilege! The response of people is amazing and I enjoy it... Although, sometimes, it takes me an hour to go buy bread (laughs). In June we begin filming the ninth season, so for the moment I’m making the most of a mountain of personal projects and travelling, another of my passions.
