MACHAKOS AXONOMETRY URBAN INTERVENTIONS

THE DOMESTIC SPACE

Improving the immediate living conditions for the inhabitants of the low income settlement is one of the main priorities of the strategy. The poor housing conditions are improved by the installation of communal water tanks, in which rainwater from the roofs can get collected. The room on the back head of the dwelling can be transformed from housing room into a shared kitchen, where food is prepared for the community consumption or can be used as business opportunity. Water is the main element for improving inhabitant’s quality of life. From the kitchen, access can be given to the backstreet that could be transformed into a secure, calm, green and shady communal space. A new transition is therefore established from the exterior public space to the private inner courtyard, the kitchen and the communal space.

THE PUBLIC REALM In the public domain empty plots are used in order to facilitate public life. These places are more than just a possible gathering space; they serve the structure of the city. Canopy structures act as catalyst element for the new public spaces and house different functions, such as public toilets, water access points for washing vehicles and clothes, garbage collection points but also gathering spaces and play and sports elements. A sequence of such new public spaces leads through the district and ends in a terraced park that forms the connection between urban life and the ecological corridor of the riparian zone. To facilitate a more direct access to the district and the park, two streets from the Central Business District are directly prolonged.

THE RIPARIAN CORRIDOR

Because of the measures taken within the private and public domain, the water quality and pollution of the riparian corridor should have improved. It can now serve two functions: as an ecological and recreational axis with pathways leading along it, and as source of water for city and agriculture. The challenge is to secure a steady water provision from the storm water peaks, but also to preserve the adjacent areas from flooding and erosion. Therefore, collection ponds are installed to catch the water surplus from the rainy months. From there in, the water is cleaned and pumped towards the water access points as well as to the fields east of the river. Recreational structures can form around these ponds and form a system of rest and activity spaces along the corridor.

THE AGRICULTURAL LAND

Within the further expansion of Machakos, it is essential to preserve the important reservoir and potential recreational axis from construction.

THE SKY IN OUR VEINS

Yet, the agricultural hillside offers potential for suburban developments. To enhance the connectivity between these two separated pieces of land, the “jump” over the river is made by new pedestrian bridges. On the hillside, we need to create structures for urban growth as well as to ensure the productivity of the agriculture.
