Piedra House

Elevation

The terrain where Piedra house was developed has two particularities that conditioned and challenged the project: an historic and catalogued preexistent facade, and the height of that wall, both of them mustn’t be changed at all. In addition, the area of the terrain, and its shape, were others factors that determined the project.

The solution consisted in separating the program in two zones. First, the social area was conformed by the kitchen, dining, and living room, which share the same space taking advantage of their similar activities, and the almost double height of the room(4m) because of the restriction about the facade, the space is iluminated by means of sawtooth in the ceiling. The second are contains the bedrooms, the bathroom, and the laundryroom. In this case, it was necessary to include an interior yard to ventilate and iluminate the spaces. 11

Training Institute for Work

Buenavista, Mexico City. MX | 2015 Bachelor Degree’s Thesis

As final project to obtain my professional degree, I worked in turning a wasteland, located in a borough with many social problems like poverty, insecurity, prostitution, segregation, and drug addictions, to a educational building which provides opportunities to overcome those situations and improve the life of the population. Due to its proportion and adjoinings, the project was solved using the ground floor to connect the street with the building, by means of the public services and commercial activities. The educational rooms are placed in the next two levels, leaving an open space in the third floor whose main function is having outdoor activities. A central element integrates all the floors and contains the services. Each part of the structure has a function in the building (blocking radiation, introducing sunlight, or collecting rainwater, to name a few) and at the same time works as architectural finishes, resulting in an low-cost building with urban and social responsability. 12

Center for Community Development IzĂşcar, Pue. MX | 2013

Designed with the Office of Public Works, Urban Design, and Territorial Ordering of IzĂşcar, Puebla.

IzĂşcar is a small city in process of developing, with an increasing population that demands more places offering educational, health or cultural public services, to mention a few. Covering these new necessities was the main reason of origin of this building. The architectural program is divided in two blocks: a first building contains the administrative offices, while the second the teaching spaces and complementary services. This building works, at the same time, separating a yard destinated for outdoor activities from a field required for the education of agriculture. Orientation (north-south), ventilation (taking advantage of the dominant winds from northeast), and economy (using cheap materials and finishes with low maintenance), were three of the most important concepts that lead the process of designing due to the public and educational character of the edification. 14

MEDITATION PAVILION

San Felipe del Agua, Oax. MX | 2011 Designed with Alma GarcĂa and Diego LeĂąo

In a lot with an intervention made by the Mexican architect Enrique Lastra, who built a wall and parallel to it a colonnade using the traditional material of the region, the adobe bricks, it was required to design a pavilion to develop different activities, having as predominant the practice of meditation. The project was solved by means of two blocks. The first area will be used as a multifunctional space; meanwhile, the second block will contain the public services like the restrooms and the kitchen. Trying to preserve the strong character and materiality of the preexistences, both blocks are solved using an inked concrete with a similar color than the wall and the colonnade. At the same time, the horizontality of the blocks establishes a clear contrasts and dialogue with the verticality or the elements built previously. 16

MINIDEPS

Izúcar, Pue. MX | 2010 Designed with Alma García and Diego Leño

The increasing of the student population in universities located in small urban centers has generated the appearance of buildings destinated to cover the demand for housing for students. This is the case of the Minidep’s. The project is organized in three blocks divided by means of two stair cores. Each building contains one apartment per floor. Besides fullfiling their function of distribution, the stairs work articulating the set. The buildings were placed occuping the adjoining sides and generating an access patio which is directly related with the street. The views of the apartments are opened to the patio, to take advantage of the sunlight and the winds, and internally organized looking for optimizing the living space over the circulations. The colors used in the facade are a response to the colorful palette that characterizes the zone. 18
