Information from Current Situation Analysis

OUTCOME • As a result of the 3 successful attempts: • 6 people out of 8 manifested high willingness to the idea of urban gardening. • 2 people out of 8 stated their lack of time but showed interest in buying local production frequently. • No person manifested lack of interest in the idea of urban gardening. • As a result of the unsuccessful attempt: • Some people were not very open to “strangers” in their courtyards. • The experiment was not successful in some typologies, reason why it was not possible to prove the interest of some people in urban gardening. It is necessary to find another way to approach them. • Even though there is a favorable tendency towards the idea of urban gardening in the neighborhood, the sample made is still very small. Further scaling of testing and experiments are needed to give stronger support to the strategy implementation.

Adaptability The large variety of existing planting methods allows urban gardening to be implemented under different conditions even if there are limitations such as no natural soil available or limited exposure to sunlight.

Improvement of environmental and spatial qualities Besides creating a pleasant atmosphere and giving aesthetic qualities to the spaces between buildings, urban farming contributes to the enhancement of the environmental qualities on a micro level.

The activity of urban gardning proves to be succesful and highly replicable in other parts of the neighbourhood, exponentially increasing social interaction between neighbors as well as spatial relations between segregated and underused areas. The linkage of this productive clusters with the existing vehicular and pedestrian flows allows the creation of a network that facilitates the exchange of knowledge and goods between neighbours and external partners In a second stage of expansion new strategic partnerships with new stakeholders (such as the private and public schools) are being made as new activities are introduced, which might include: urban gardening workshops, Saturday ma activation of communal kitchens, farming related conferences, among others, which are to be organized periodically, either in an isolated manner or simultaneously as part of a major event such as a Seasonal Neighbourhood Festival

Conclusions

- The first approach with the neighbors shows a favorable tendency to approve the introduction of urban gardening in Kernerviertel. Scaling and involvement of a representative sample is needed for further analysis and stronger conclusions regarding the neighbors interest towards the idea. - Continuous involvement and feedback of the neighbors is necessary in all the stages of the strategy and represents the most important asset for the success of the project. - Strong connections and good relations are needed between public and private stakeholders. - Already existing incentives given by the municipality provides the project with a strong base for the startup. - Further research is needed for analyzing the suitability of the different spatial typologies for implementing the urban gardening in terms technical aspects as exposure to sunlight during the year, quality of soil, among others.
