We grow, we breed, we trade. That also characterises our history. On 35 hectares of our own land, 35 tulip varieties and 15 daffodil varieties grow in the open air, all certified of course (MPS A and PlanetProof). Breeding new varieties / Remarkable We love to pull our strengths with those of others. That’s why we are part of Remarkable Tulips, a collective of seven flower bulb growers and exporters that works on the breeding and development of new tulip varieties. These bulbs are of the very best quality and have a high resistance to diseases. Breeding requires patience, but the result is more than worth it: the most stunning and most exclusive tulips.

JUB AT KEUKENHOF 2021 For JUB’s Keukenhof Borders 2021, with the theme ‘Wild Garden’,designer Carien van Boxtel was inspired by the late and great William Robinson. Borders are planted in two layers. A dedicated team of experienced Keukenhof gardeners meticulously planted the bulbs. We are incredibly excited to see the result at: Keukenhof 2021: March 20 -May 9

New 2021 Eye-catchers The beautiful JUB Keukenhof mixture “Hot & Cold”, in two flowering periods, floweredbeautifully during Spring 2020 but could unfortunately not be admired by the public due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Biodiversity: bulbs for bees and butterflies WHAT IS BIODIVERSITY ? Biodiversity is a term we use to describe the richness of nature. It is about the great variety of animals, plants, habitats and genes. By interaction with environmental factors, biodiversity creates ecosystems in which organisms can live, for example humans. The habitats of bees and butterflies have become increasingly smaller and are also increasingly further apart. Floral roadsides, gardens and public green spaces can constitute an important link between these habitats.

BULBS FOR BEES The bulbs which we use in our bee mixtures all belong in the top 10. The botanical forms of all bulbs mentioned below are good for bees. “Bees” include both honey bees and wild bees. The mentioned varieties are examples of the tested species. The nectar and pollen value depends on various conditions such as weather, location, etc. In the two columns, the values are given from 1 (moderate but useful) to 5 (very good).

MANY BULB FLOWERS ARE ATTRACTIVE TO BEES AND BUTTERFLIES Many bulb flowers are attractive to butterflies and bees. They owe this to the large amount of nectar in their flowers. Bees and butterflies are fond of it. Nectar is a sweet syrupy liquid containing sugars, proteins and vitamins. The bees and butterflies need those substances to lay eggs. And while they fly from flower to flower, they take care of pollination of the flowers. A winwin situation.

COOPERATION WITH BUGLIFE AND THE BUTTERFLY FOUNDATION Together with organisations such as Buglife, the Dutch Beekeepers Association and the Dutch Butterfly Foundation, we have developed special mixtures which are bee and butterfly friendly.

In addition, much attention is paid to ecological management and the development of herbaceous vegetations. In order to achieve a well balanced biodiversity and to garantee a long flowering period, we are experimenting with the concept of combining bulbs and herbs. Within this concept, the forces of stable and native herb vegetations are combined with a specifically developed natural bulb mixture. Green Cities; The positive effect of Green Living WHAT DO ‘GREEN CITIES’ DO? Urbanisation and climate change call for new solutions to maintain and improve the quality of life in our cities. Public green space has a positive effect on biodiversity, climate, wellness and air quality. This impact ensures that cities are becoming better places to live and work. ‘Green Cities for a Sustainable Europe´ is a platform that encourages the greening of public spaces by providing innovative ideas, information based on scientific research, and technical expertise. Its activities address certain themes: health, climate, the economy, biodiversity and social cohesion. ‘Green Cities for a Sustainable Europe’ was launched in 2018 by the ENA (European Nurserystock Association) and nursery organi-sations in B elgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, United Kingdom, France, Germany and The Netherlands.

Oak processionary moth control; OPM bulb mixture stimulates natural enemies OAK PROCESSIONARY MOTH CONSUMER PACK The oak processionary moth continues to spread and is now well established in most of Greater London and in some surrounding counties and government studies show the pest spreading on an annual basis. In many places the fire hairs of the caterpillars (larvae) of OPM are a hazard to human and animal health. Based on the results of our research, we now have a special mixture that attracts the natural enemies of the oak processionary moth, such as parasitic flies, parasitic wasps, beetles, green lacewings etc. This mixture is not only available for public green areas but also as consumer pack for planting around trees or to hand out as community planting project. NATURAL CONTROL Four years ago, in collaboration with Silvia Hellingman of ‘Hellingman Research and Advice’, we started to conduct research into attracting the natural enemies of the oak processionary caterpillar/moth (OPM) with flower bulbs. Efficiently combating the oak processionary caterpillars consists of various measures that interact positively. In addition to the preventive spraying of the caterpillars, the removal of the nests and catching the male moths with pheromone traps, stimulating the presence of natural enemies such as birds and insects is an essential link in the management of these troublesome caterpillars.

There are many insects which fight the oak processionary caterpillars, such as parasitic flies, parasitic wasps, beetles, green lacewings etc. A large proportion of these insects depends on nectar and pollen during their lifetime as adult insects. An example is the common green lacewing (Chrysoperla carnea). The larvae are active predators and feed on aphids, young caterpillars and other small insects. They can also be used in the biological control of insect pests on crops. The green lacewing adults hibernate buried in leaf litter at the edge of fields or other rough places, emerging when the weather warms up in Spring. Each female lacewing lays several hundred small eggs at the rate of two to five per day, choosing concealed spots underneath leaves or on shoots near potential prey. The larvae hatch in three to six days, eat voraciously and can consume large numbers of prey and completely destroy caterpillar colonies. In addition, earlier parasitic wasps are also active, which depend on pollen and nectar.

LURE THE NATURAL ENEMIES The trick is to lure these natural enemies of the OPM to the desired locations early in Spring by planting flower bulbs. Yellow flowers attract a lot of insects, that’s why it is important to plant daffodils. Blue grape hyacinths (Muscari) are nectar rich and are frequently visited by insects. Our special OPM mixture combines the most suitable varieties for the best possible result. By planting the right bulbs we create a bridge to the later flowering vegetation that is sown to attract natural enemies. This combination creates the ideal conditions for the natural enemies. Besides, it is also good for bees and other pollinating insects that are already struggling in recent years and, moreover, it’s an attractive and nature friendly option in the public eye.

Rain Gardens and (bulb) planting schemes BY CARIEN VAN BOXTEL, DESIGNER AT JUB Garden and landscape designer Carien van Boxtel is the permanent designer and planting expert for JUB Holland. Together with JUB, Carien is working on various bulb projects with naturalising bulbs. Amongst others for the Dutch town Breda, where she has designed “Royal ribbons of bulbs in Royal colours” that ‘wrap up’ the entire town centre.

Together with the residents, a number of special naturalising mixtures have been planted in the beautiful village of Kamerik in the centre of Holland. In the Dutch archeology museum Archeon, Carien and JUB are working together with a planting scheme using only historic bulbs.

WHAT IS A RAIN GARDEN? In its simplest form, a rain garden is a shallow depression, with absorbent, yet free draining soil and planted with vegetation that can withstand occasional temporary flooding. Rain gardens are simple interventions designed to receive rainwater which has come from a downpipe or a large domestic paved area. The rainwater enters the soil and drains away into the ground or is taken up by the plants. They help our gardens to deal more effectively with heavy rain, but they also filter and clean run-off. Rain gardens are designed to slow surface water run-off and improve water quality. However, it is a garden feature and should work for you in terms of the overall design of your property. Like any garden, there is range of possible planting styles: your rain garden might have ornamental, low maintenance ground cover, designed to provide a habitat for wildlife or grasses in combination with stones or gravel. When choosing plants you may want to consider height, colour and flowering period. Taller plants tend to be situated at the centre of the garden and shorter ones around the edges, so that all can be seen and so that deeper-rooted plants can benefit from the deeper soil in the middle of the bed. By grouping plants of various size and texture you will be able to create an interesting looking garden even when few flowers are in bloom. If you wish to create habitat for wildlife, plant native bulbs or plants that are known to attract insects like bees and butterflies and other wildlife

SUITABLE PLANTS Plants that are suitable for a rain garden are not always bog plants, but must be resistant to dynamic or changing situations: often dry and sometimes (very) wet. Lawns are not suitable for rain gardens: lawn grasses cannot cope with a lack of oxygen. A perennial vegetation, whether or not combined with trees, is ideal. A limited range of flower bulbs is also very suitable for rain gardens. Bulbs tolerate drought during their rest period and a number of varieties can be used very well in wet to damp locations. In all cases, the drainage must be optimal. A reasonable amount of food is also a condition. For optimal naturalising, the mowing management will have to be adjusted to the time it takes for the foliage to die so that the bulb can store food again for the next growing season.

Naturalising bulbs NATURALISING AND LOW MAINTENANCE BULBS FOR WOODLAND AREAS, PARKS AND BORDERS Naturalising bulbs, many of them being native varieties, can be found in this section. Our naturalising bulbs are all nursery grown and not collected from the wild! In general, they require minimal maintenance and many of them will grow in (semi-) shady locations.

BIODIVERSITY AND NATURALISING BULBS Naturalising bulbs provide colour from the early Spring until summer and in Autumn and are an important nectar and pollen source for (wild) bees, butterflies and other invertebrates. Especially in the sparce, first months of the year, bulbs such as winter aconite, scilla, snowdrop and crocus are indispensable for early flying bees and bumblebees. Autumn flowering crocuses and colchicums serve the late flying bees and other insects during September and October.

Practical tips MECHANICAL PLANTING, FEEDING, QUALITY, PLANTING LOCATION, ALPHABETICAL INDEX, SPECIALISTS AND TERMS & CONDITIONS 25 years ago, JUB Holland developed a planting machine that plants bulbs in existing lawns and roadsides, in a simple manner. In this chapter you can find information about mechanical planting as well as feeding and mowing policies. You will also find a handy list which shows each variety with the recommended location, specific features, durability and an alphabetical index.

Mechanical planting MECHANICAL PLANTING OF FLOWER BULBS Our special planting machine is ideal for planting large quantities of bulbs in existing grass, along roadsides, in lawns, roundabouts etc. By planting the bulbs with our machine you will achieve a major reduction in labour costs.The machine is a combination of planter and (mini) tractor. A large container holds the bulbs, whilst at the bottom two belts deliver the bulbs to the ‘plant feet’. Two vertical rotating knives open the turf just before the plant feet. The feet ‘dive’ into the ground and open up the turf, at which point the belts release the bulbs which fall into the soil and are then covered. The machine also puts the turf back in position, followed by a roller.

PLANT CAPACITY OF THE MACHINE Under the right circumstances it is possible to plant approximately 10,000 daffodils or 25,000 crocuses/small bulbs per hour. The speed of the planting may vary depending on factors like soil type, location and bulb size.

EMBANKMENT PLANTING

PLANTING WITH SIDE PLANTER

Especially for sloping areas we offer a machine that can plant on banks with a maximum angle of 30 to 35 degrees. This machine is provided with caterpillar tracks, and an additional plant foot so that a uniform effect can be achieved.

In order to plant closer to trees, we recently developed a side planter. This machine has a plant foot mounted on the side of the machine which enables us to plant between, or very close to, trees.

Feeding, fertilisation plan and mowing FEEDING AND FERTILISATION PLAN To preserve your bulbs, it is very important to provide them with food. JUB has therefore further expanded the service. It is now also possible to carry out feeding in the Autumn and Spring with our specially selected biological bulb fertiliser. This is the same fertiliser which we use for our own cultivation at our nursery. In Autumn, the fertiliser is given simultaneously with the mechanical planting of bulbs in grass via a device installed on the planting machine. An environmentally friendly organic food can be used in the Spring. The organic component in this fertiliser is converted into humus by soil organisms.

MOWING When using naturalising bulbs in grass areas, a commonly accepted guideline is that mowing can be started an average of six to eight weeks after flowering.

This will allow the bulbs enough time to produce seeds and die back naturally. An exception to this rule is the allium, which can be mown directly after flowering. The foliage of most alliums has already died back before flowering.

Tänk på att förvara löken mörkt, syrerikt och runt ett par grader till 15 grader före plantering. Packa alltid upp kartongerna inom ett 2 dagar från leverans för att vi ska kunna behandla en ev. reklamation. Vid reklamation ska en lök skickas till oss. Köp – och leveransvillkor Leverans sker från och med vecka 37. Vid fel på leverans av levererade varor ska en transportreklamation göras på plats vid leveranstillfället där chauffören ska underteckna ev. transportskada, annars gäller inte garantin på frakten.
