Reimagining Cities
OUR PRACTICE
Since our founding in 1946, our planning and urban design group has been at the core of our practice. The changing needs of cities are our focus; revitalizing downtown districts, developing resilient communities, transit-oriented developments and urban mixed-use. Our practice is focused around regions, leaving a positive impact and improving the quality of life for communities throughout North America. Recently both RTKL and Callison were acquired by the ARCADIS family of companies, creating one of the leading multidisciplinary global design entities. We integrate design innovation, planning policy and sound implementation strategy to create great places with economic, social, and environmental benefit.

TOOLS WE USE
IMPACTFUL PROJECTS
Our work makes a difference. Using tangible performance metrics, we assess the impact our work has on people and planet, on the degree to which it fosters a sense of civic purpose and adds economic value.
MULIDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION
Our team includes planners and urban designers, architects, landscape architects, graphic artists and research professionals -- a broad group of professionals who collaborate across disciplines, each bringing unique talents and perspectives toward a unified goal.
DESIGN COMMUNICATION
Design can be a community engagement tool -- a process that relies on storytelling and consensusbuilding, that sparks new ideas and possibilities, leads to refinement toward implementation.
ACTIVE URBANISM
A mix of uses in close proximity can promote greater resource efficiency and higher levels of pedestrian activity. Mixed use environments promote the exchange of ideas and chance encounters; urban features essential to the modern knowledge based, creative economy.
INTELLIGENT MOBILITY
Providing transit options can be transformative to cities. Mobility choices address the needs of a diverse community, promote health and well being, and attract private investment.
WORKING LANDSCAPES
Green networks should contribute to longterm urban resiliency, by reducing heat island, providing passive and active respite, natural habitats, edible gardens, resilient flood zones and renewable power generation.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Our ideas come from close and trusting collaborations between our team, the community, and city officials. We provide creative outreach approaches, from face to face interactions to online tools.
RESOURCE OPTIMIZATION
With issues related to funding of public infrastructure as well as urban resilience, we emphasize the importance of creating a systems wide management strategy around water, energy, and waste.
EVIDENCE - BASED PLANNING & DESIGN
We have created a living data base of hundreds of urban districts and regional mixed-use developments to assess environmental, social and financial performance. We invest in ongoing research and apply lessons learned in our working methodology. RTKL / CALLISON: PLANNING AND URBAN DESIGN
OUR TEAM 50 + planners, urban designers, architects, landscape architects, graphic designers, market strategists, researchers, renderers, and modelers, collaborating to create great urban environments throughout North America.

L.A. LIVE LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA As the centerpiece of the city’s sports and entertainment district, L.A. Live mixed-use development has revitalized downtown Los Angeles with an exciting, 24-hour-a-day mixed use environment. Using flexible entitlements tied to vehicle trips, the Masterplan entitlement has been increased by 175% over the years allowing over 7 million GSF of development due to aggressive transit usage in the project area. The plan has been largely
implemented, resulting in over 12 billion dollars in investment, a new 1001 room convention hotel, over 3000 units of new housing, creative office space, 7 entertainment venues and 120,000 GSF retail, 350 annual events, and over $20 million in annual taxes going directly to the City of Los Angeles general fund. Over 20 million visitors come to L. A. Live every year, restablishing the city as one of the world’s most dynamic entertainment destinations.
The signage code allows almost 150,000 GSF in fixed and animated signage on premises, allowing significant revenues from advertising, naming rights and corporate sponsorships. Community benefits for the project include over 6000 permanent jobs for local residents. A campus wide sustainability program has resulted in overall energy consumption decreased by 10%, and water consumption by 25%.

EKURHULENI AEROTROPOLIS MASTER PLAN JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA Ekurhuleni is host to the OR Tambo International Airport, the largest airport in Africa, and the center of the industrial and commercial activity that is the engine of the South African economy. The desire to create an Aerotropolis within the city seeks to build on the economic strength of the entire province, its logistical network and its human capital, bringing jobs and prosperity to the region. The Aerotropolis Masterplan enables the municipality to
unlock economic potential and steward resources more efficiently, while providing greater equity across the region. The plan identifies key economic clusters which can leverage proximity to the airport, which include logistics and warehousing, medical research and development, aerospace, tourism, and hi tech manufacturing, all of which are intensive job creators (projected impact on the region to be 100,000 direct jobs in the first 20 years of implementation).
Existing urban developments are used as the “seeds upon which vital infrastructure and services are added. Recommendations for the existing communities of Benoni, Brakpan, and Germiston include adding key features that promote development interest, such as high speed internet, expanded road networks, improved water treatment, continuing education facilities and renewable power generation.

DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION
MIDTOWN EAST VISION STUDY VENTURA, CALIFORNIA The team worked with the community to identify a disparity of outcomes and boldly question the viability of the traditional suburban mall and autooriented movement patterns in the modern city. Scenarios investigated a wide spectrum of outcomes based upon the changing lifestyle in the area, including the increasing popularity of public transit, changing shopping habits, emphasis on health and fitness, and the changing role of the workplace in
cities. Two options were refined based upon a variety of community based goals and objectives. Although the options varied significantly in terms of the level of intervention with the existing mall, there was wide agreement that the balance of the study should focus upon improvements to adjoining streets and public spaces. Many recommendations in the short term focus on low cost/high impact strategies such as cross

walk improvements, improved tree canopy, street restriping, expanded BRT services, community oriented event programming, and job training. Long term improvements focus on clustering new mixed use developments around multifunction public spaces adjoining transit, as well as better resource management.
