ASGER WAREHOUSE
01
ASGER WAREHOUSE IS A CAD PROJECT IN WHICH WE WORKED IN TEAMS OF TWO. THE OBJECTIVE WAS TO RECREATE HAND DRAWN SKETCHES PROVIDED TO US AND CREATE WORKING DRAWINGS FOR THEM USING AUTOCAD. EACH TEAM MEMBER WAS ASSIGNED A PORTION OF THE BUILDING TO CREATE 2D DRAWINGS. ONCE THE DRAWINGS WERE COMPLETE, THEY WERE THAN MERGED TOGETHER TO FORM ONE BUILDING. WE TOOK THE INFORMATION FROM THE FLOOR PLANS AND ELEVATION AND WE WERE TASKED TO CREATE A 3D MODEL OF THE WAREHOUSE.

THE MILLER RESIDENCE IS A HOME RENOVATION PROJECT THAT TOOK PLACE IN TEAMS OF TWO AND WORKING WITH A REAL CLIENT. BASED ON THE CLIENT’S REQUIREMENTS, TWO DESIGN SCHEMES WERE CREATED. ONE DESIGN INCLUDED CONVERTING THE ENTIRE BASEMENT INTO A FULLY FURNISHED TWOBEDROOM APARTMENT WITH A PRIVATE WALKOUT. THE SECOND DESIGN WAS BASED ON THE MAIN LEVEL, ADDING A SUNROOM TO THE HOME AND CREATING A LARGER OPEN CONCEPT KITCHEN/DINING AND LIVING SPACES. A LARGE COVERED FRONT PORCH WAS ALSO ADDED TO THIS DESIGN, PROVIDING A MORE INVITING AND PRACTICAL MAIN ENTRANCE.

IN TEAMS OF FOUR, WE WERE CHALLENGED TO CREATE A MULTI-FUNCTIONAL SUSTAINABLE OFFICE COMPLEX FOR BERTAZZONI APPLIANCES. THE BUILDING WOULD ACCOMMODATE FOR RETAIL SERVICES ON THE MAIN LEVEL, AND LEASABLE OFFICE SPACES ON THE SECOND LEVEL. BERTAZZONI APPLIANCES WOULD OCCUPY THE THIRD AND FOURTH LEVELS, FEATURING THEIR OFFICE SPACES, CALL CENTRES AND OPEN SHOWROOMS.

POPULATION. THE BUILDING CONTAINS FIVE STOREYS OF ARTIST LOFTS, AND A MAIN LEVEL DEDICATED FOR A CAFÉ, AND AN ART GALLERY. DESIGNING

PUBLIC
AND
ENSURING THE BUILDINGS CONNECTION TO THE PUBLIC REALM WAS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR THAT PLAYED INTO DESIGN THIS BUILDING. WE WANTED IT TO BE AN INVITING SPACE, A SOCIAL GATHERING FOR BOTH OLD AND NEW TO COME AND ENJOY THE NEIGHBOURHOOD’S CULTURE AND TALENT.
Jude K. Menezes
REBIRTH TOP THE TOP PORTION OF THE BUILDING USES THE SAME ALUCOBOND MATERIALS AS WELL AS THE GREY BRICK. WHAT MAKES THE TOP DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER TWO SECTIONS OF THE BUILDING WOULD BE THE SHAPE OF THE UPPER LEVEL. THE BUILDING IS STEPPED IN AT THE TOP AND IS A MUCH SMALLER AREA THEN COMPARED TO THE MIDDLE AND BASE WHICH IS MUCH ``HEAVIER`` WHERE AS THE TOP IS ``LIGHTER``. LARGER GREEN ROOF/PATIO SPACES ARE LOCATED ON THE TOP, PROVIDING MORE OF A PRIVATE SPACE FOR THE RESIDENCES AWAY FROM THE PUBLIC REALM.
MIDDLE THE MIDDLE OF THE BUILDING IS WHERE ALL THE RESIDENTIAL UNITS BEGIN. TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THE BASES, THE INDIVIDUAL UNITS HAVE BEEN PUSHED IN AND OUT TO HELP THEM STANDOUT. THE BRICK EXTERIOR IS ALSO CARRIED THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE, AS WELL AS THE CURVED ALUCOBOND PANELS. INSTEAD OF JUST CREATING ONE WALL DEDICATED TO ONE PARTICULAR MATERIAL, PLACING THEM IN A ``SCATTERED`` MANNER ALLOWS FOR THE MIDDLE PORTION OF THE BUILDING TO STAND OUT FROM ITS BASE AND PREVENT IT FROM LOOK LIKE A CONTINUOUS WALL.
BASE AT THE BASE OF THE BUILDING, WE USED A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT MATERIALS TO ENHANCE THE BUILDING MASS AND ULTIMATELY TIE IN THE BUILDING AS ONE. THE RESIDENCE AND VISITORS WILL ENJOY THE SUNLIGHT SHINING INTO THE LOWER LEVEL CURTAIN WALLS, AND ENJOY THE VIEW LOOKING OUT ONTO QUEENS AND FENNING`S. THE BASE OF THE BUILDING IS WHERE MOST OF THE BUILDING ``ACTIVITIY`` WILL OCCUR. A LARGE PRECENTAGE OF THE BUILLDINGS GLAZING IS LOCATED IN THE BASE; WHICH ALLOWS THE PUBLIC TO CONNECT WITH THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING, CREATING AN INVITING FEELING. THE CAFÉ AND GALLERY IS SHOWCASED THROUGH BOTH STREETS. AS THE OUTDOOR PATIO PROVIDES A COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT FOR ANYONE TO ENJOY.
THE CONCEPT FOR THE ARTSCAPE ARTIST LIVE/ WORK BUILDING FOCUSSES ON THE IDEA OF “REBIRTH”. THE EXISTING LOT CONSISTS OF A LARGE TREE IN THE BACK CORNER OF THE AREA, DUE TO THE SIZE OF THE TREE REMOVING IT WOULD BE THE BEST OPTION TO ALLOW FOR PROPER BUILDING FUNCTION. THE REMOVAL OF THIS TREE PLAYS A BIG ROLE IN THE OVERALL CONCEPT OF THE BUILDING. THE IDEA THAT CUTTING DOWN THE TREE AND BUILDING ON TOP OF WHERE IT USED TO BE WOULD BE GIVING LIFE BACK TO THE TREE, A REBIRTH. FROM THE TREES UNIQUE FEATURES, EACH ELEMENT SYMBOLIZES A PART IN THE BUILDING. THE ROOTS SIGNIFIES PEOPLE VISITING AND THE COMMUNITY COMING TOGETHER AS ONE. THE TRUNK SIGNIFIES THE BUILDING CORE WHERE WE HAVE RESIDENCE AND VISITORS GOING UP AND DOWN THE ELEVATOR TO ALL FLOORS. THE BRANCHES REPRESENTS ARTISTS GOING TO THEIR UNITS (SPREADING IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS, BUT STILL TOGETHER IN ONE UNITY). THE TWIGS SYMBOLIZES EACH ARTIST’S UNIQUE TALENT. FINALLY, THE FRUIT/LEAVES FALLING TO THE GROUND REPRESENTS THE ARTIST’S WORK OF ART MOVING DOWN TO THE FIRST AND SECOND FLOOR TO BE SHOWCASED IN THE ART GALLERY. FOR THE BUILDING EXTERIOR FINISHES AND OTHER ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS THAT WILL BE INCORPORATED, A FEW OF THESE FEATURES ARE ALSO INFLUENCED BY THE “TREE”. THE USE OF RECYCLED LUMBER (FROM THE TREE) WILL BE USED TO CREATE AN ARCHITECTURAL FEATURE ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE BUILDING, TYING OLD EXISTING WITH THE NEW DESIGN. VARIOUS WOOD PANELS WILL ALSO ENHANCE THE BUILDING FACADES TO CREATE AN EYE CATCHING DESIGN AND MAKE THE BUILDING THE HEART OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD.
PUBLIC REALM THE CONNECTION OF THE PUBLIC REALM TO THE BUILDING WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENT TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN DESIGNING THIS BUILDING. ON THE GROUND LEVEL, HAVING A LARGE AMOUNT OF OPENESS WAS IDEAL. ADDING CURTAIN WALLS ON BOTH QUEENS AND FEENINGS PROVIDES A COMFORTABLE AND WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT. SINCE IT IS AN ARTIST RESIDENCE BUILIDNG, HAVING THE LARGE GLASS WOULD ALSO ALLOW THE ARTITS TO BE ABLE TO SHOWCASE THEIR ART WORK TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD. THE LARGE OUTDOOR CAFÉ PATIO IS A SPACE THAT ALLOWS FOR BOTH RESIDENTS AND THE GERNERAL PUBLIC TO INTERACT AND SOCIALIZE WITH ONE ANOTHER CREATING A TIGHT KNIT COMMUNITY. OVER LOOKING THE PARK, IT ALLOWS FOR BOTH THE NEIGHBOURHOOD AND BUILDING TO BE CONNECTED WITH EACH OTHER IN A UNITY.
LIVING & WORKSPACE SHOWCASING BOTH LIVING AND WORKSPACE AREAS. CLOSLEY INTERGRATED WITH ONE ANOTHER TO PROVIDE A FUNCTIONAL SPACE
KITCHEN & LIVING KITCHEN AND LIVING OPEN CONCEPT SPACE TO PROVIDE LOTS OF NATURAL LIGHTING. HIGH END APPLIANCES, REFURBISHED HARDWOOD FLOORING INTEGRATED WITH THE RECYLCED LUMBER FORM THE PREVIOUS TREE ON SITE.

THE LEARNING TREE
Jude K. Menezes
EBENEZER HALL WAS A HERITAGE PROJECT THAT TOOK PLACE IN TEAMS OF FOUR. THE GOAL OF THE PROJECT WAS TO CREATE A NEW ADDITION DAYCARE CENTRE (THE LEARNING TREE) THAT WOULD ATTACH TO THE EXISTING EBENEZER HERITAGE BUILDING. THE OBJECTIVE WAS TO CREATE A DESIGN THAT WOULD HAVE THE LEAST MINIMAL IMPACT ON THE EXISTING STRUCTURE, PRESERVING ITS NATURAL STATE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. THE NEW ADDITION IS A COMPLEX, MULTI-STOREY, MULTIUSE BUILDING. THE DESIGN DEVELOPMENT PHASE/STAGE REQUIRED THE APPLICATION OF OBC (PART 3 & 11), LOCAL PLANNING ISSUES, SUSTAINABLE DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS, ACCESSIBILITY (AODA), AND COORDINATING THE WORK OF OTHER CONSULTANTS, (SUCH AS STRUCTURAL, MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL) HELPED IN PREPARING A SET OF CONSTRUCTION WORKING DRAWINGS INCLUDING WALL SECTIONS WITH KEY DETAILS.

CHOCOSOL
07
“CHOCOSOL” IS AN ADDITION PROJECT THAT WAS COMPLETED IN TEAMS OF THREE. THIS WAS A UNIQUE DESIGN PROJECT AS IT WAS FOR A REAL CLIENT. FOR THIS PARTICULAR PROJECT WE WERE DESIGNING AN ADDITION TO AN EXISTING BUILDING LOCATED ON 1131 ST. CLAIR. WEST TORONTO. CHOCOSOL IS A WELL-RESPECTED CHOCOLATE SHOP THAT SPECIALIZES IN CREATING CHOCOLATE IN A SUSTAINABLE WAY. THEY DIVERT FROM USING ANY DAIRY, GLUTEN, SOY OR NUT PRODUCTS IN THEIR CHOCOLATE MAKING TO ENSURE THEY ARE A HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE. FOR THIS PARTICULAR PROJECT, OUR CLIENT WANTED TO EXPAND THEIR BUILDING TO ALLOW FOR LARGER PRODUCTION SPACES AS WELL AS IMPLEMENTING VARIOUS SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGIES TO POTENTIALLY MAKE THE BUILDING ENTIRELY “OFF GRID”. CREATING A ROOF TOP GREEN HOUSE WAS AN IMPORTANT FEATURE TO ADD, AS IT WOULD INCREASE THEIR HARVESTING. IN ADDITION TO LARGER PRODUCTION SPACES, PUBLIC SPACES WERE ALSO ADDED TO ALLOW FOR WORKSHOPS AND GENERAL PUBLIC GATHERINGS FOR SOCIAL EVENTS SUCH AS, CHOCOLATE TASTINGS AND IN-HOUSE LECTURES.
