ABOUT JUDE Jude designs above all to draw people outdoors into a luxurious exotic landscape. Sunny, shady and trellis covered decks, terraces, balconies, gardens, courtyards, fountains, pools and porches with handmade white, natural and colorful furnishings, flowers and plants are part of her design language. Slipping into a comfy sofa, hammock, pool or hot tub with vineyard, beach, lake, river, or mountain views and enjoy a starry night smelling orange blossoms and roses describes a ʻjude projectʼ.
eyes and the palette. Jude enjoys her seclusion in the California vineyards and the family beach house in Chile, as she develops her aquaponic edible sculptures and draws and models her designs. But her seclusion does not last long as this intuitive women has too many family members and clients and made too many friendships to keep only her own company for very long.
After years spent creating retreats, homes, boutiques, schools and communities for others around the world, Jude Steele decided it was time to create her own retreat for her family and friends. She plunged further into her experiments with environmentalism and art making, further developing her expertise in sustainable, transitional and resilient practices. She and her collaborative team of designers, architects, artists and artisans explore space making in many forms and materials including bamboo, fiber, cob, adobe, stone, clay, recycled glass, tile, and even paper.
She enjoyed a childhood of simple living on a farm in her native Northwest Washington, was education in the US, Canada, and Switzerland, then came employment at leading architecture, design and development firms on the East and West Coasts designing everything from modern and classical homes and furniture to the renovation and new development of whole neighborhoods in the US, Caribbean, South Pacific, Malta, and Chile. Clients range from high profile politicians, authors, businesses and governments to alternative schools, healing retreats and Green Peace projects. Acquaintances, who had put Chile or California on their travel wish list, gladly accepted her invitations to drop by and visit and enjoy the abundance of her always busy kitchen.
“I wanted to promote the use of handmade details and alternatives to wood in interiors, architecture and gardens”, explains Jude, who is focused on how we change wasteful and unhealthy building practices. “I also needed to live in an edible garden as I did on the farm of my childhood where most of the food we grew on our land.” she says, as she shows renderings of her personal project of turning her lawn into a feast for the
Pretty soon Judeʼs beach house was too small for all the company so she keeps designing and building with the help of family and friends. They keep experimenting with new ideas and material and when Jude gets the call to go somewhere new there is always a family member, client or friend whoʼs ready and willing to take the creation to their added vision. Projects have grown and evolved developing into guest accommodations that include
cottages, restaurants, beach boutique hotels, eco-village communities and a private island. “My love affair with land near an abundance of water and Nature keeps my imagination exploring how we can live outside more and leave a lighter footprint on the landscape. And as I am addicted to change, and love to travel, I am constantly exploring how to make my lifestyle more portable and self sufficient.” Jude explains that in her perfect imaginary world she would live in a luxurious tent that floats on water and air and flies wherever she wishes. “ When settling for a while all would fold out like origami and weʼd live outdoors. It could hold all our necessities so when itʼs time to make a change the transition is simple. “ Yet, no matter where she is sheʼ must be connected to the internet. She admits, “ Probably another of my addictions is collecting information, art images and music. In these times there is so much going on and so much to learn. We truly live in a wondrous world of change and contradiction. Letʼs design our resilience with that.” Jude loves to share what she calls her JudECOllection, her collection of all the information and objects we love to live with and she plan to keep exploring how we can “live more harmoniously” for the rest of her years on the planet. Because, “Real beauty is responsible and inspires. The environment is everyoneʼs issue- not someone elseʼs.”
