A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR

Photojojo

FROM,

Judiee

hello, Photojojo! I’m Judiee, nice to meet you. :) I would love to collaborate with you guys as a tutorial writer. I went to school for graphic design, but studied all kinds of things along with my design classes (ikebana, experimental photography, tap dance, video editing, and so on and so on...) For the past three years, I was a pre-school art teacher (a place I refer to as “munchkinland”) and loved it! The mini-artists taught me how to see the excitement and possibilities in just about everything. My favorite project was when we fingerpainted a 6 foot mural with cool colors to recreate Claude Monet’s “Waterlillies”. I made the difficult decision to leave munchkinland to pursue more opportunities to grow my own art and design. Learning and teaching are two of my absolute favorite things, and I would love to help Photojojo grow their DIY/tutorial realm. Thanks so much for the time and consideration! best, Judiee

Sunshine for Sunprints In my first photography class, one of my favorite projects were with cyanotypes. Cyanotypes is a photographic printing process and is very important part to photography history. (Check out more on wikipedia here!: www.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyanotype) Not only is it an important bit of history, but the end-result is totally pinterest worthy. To create a more traditional sunprint, you can use sunprint paper (http://www.dickblick.com/products/nature-print-paper/) which is really easy to use. For this tutorial, we’re going to mix it up a bit and create personalized sunprints on fabric. There are a lot of places online where you can purchase sunprint fabric, my favorite is here: http://tinyurl.com/ltuxnnq It comes in a pack of 25, so its perfect for a sunprint party! First, you need to decide what kind of sunprint you want to make. You can use different materials (nature, keys, ribbon, buttons, etc) to create a silhouette on your sunprint, or you can use a film negative to create a print. For my sunprint, I’ll be using different nature pieces (that is both beautiful and free!)

SUNPRINT STEPS

- on a sunny day, go outside! :) - take your sunprint square out of the black bag (it’s stored to protect it from early exposure) - carefully arrange your items on top of your sunprint square - leave the items on top of your fabric square for 3-5 minutes, depending on how bright the sun is (when the sunprint square starts to fade, you know it’s ready) *if it is a particularly windy day, you can use a piece of plexi or a picture frame to keep your items from escaping! - carefully rinse the square in a shallow tub of water until your print turns into a bright, beautiful blue - hang dry your sunprint!

Here comes the best part! Once you have your completed sunprint, you can really get creative. After doing this project at a school, I took the fabric sunprint squares and turned it into art pieces for auction. We ended up with totes, pillows, and quilts. There really is no limit! Good luck and have fun!
