Thanksgiving Afloat The table is set impeccably, your loved ones are gathered and the smell of turkey wafts through the boat. The boat? Yes, the boat. Perhaps it’s a break from tradition, but could there be a better backdrop than Lady Liberty to remind ourselves of the bounty, magnificence and opportunity that America offers us ? Refuges and immigrants faced perilous conditions to see her face, but today’s passengers on board the Bateaux New York will experience a sophisticated and beautifully appointed ship that caters to their every need. The European-inspired vessel with its glass ceiling glides along the Hudson giving passengers stellar views of the Manhattan skyline including the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, the site of the World Trade Center, Ellis Island, and our beloved Statue of Liberty. Bring your family and friends on board for a Thanksgiving cruise, and as you count your blessings, you can add one more, you won’t have to clean up.

An Engaging Proposal Make room for a new Boss in New Jersey — no worries, Springsteen fans, this Boss rules with flour and sugar, not music. When Greg Kohn decided it was time to propose to girlfriend Heather Hillman, he turned to Buddy Valastro, the star of the reality series “Cake Boss,” for help. Valastro, a specialty cake baker and owner of Carlo’s City Hall Bake Shop in Hoboken, hatched a plan with Kohn to create a cake in the shape of the ring and gift box. The cake was placed on the bakery counter for an unsuspecting Heather to find. The “sweet” proposal was met with a resounding “yes” and the two will be married in September. Keep those dollars from flying out of your hands Even eternal optimists who see the glass as half full can’t escape the fact that their investment portfolios are half empty. So what are they gonna do when the dreaded “recession” threatens the lifestyle they worked so hard to achieve? Cry? Bemoan their fate? Nope, they’re just going to spend a little less. Life is still good and just like “all good things come to an end,” so do all bad things. But while you’re waiting for the Dow to come back up, here are a few ideas to stretch a buck, along with tips to get through these trying times…
Food For Thought
Wheel Deals How about driving a convertible this summer? Tired of your van and want to get a sedan? Or are you making payments on a car no one is driving? Leasetrader.com can help you save some money by connecting consumers who want to end a lease early, minus the stiff penalties, with those who are looking for short-term leases without large down payments. Driving into Manhattan? Before you go, check out www.nycgarages.com. Enter the address of where you’re heading and get a list of nearby garages and rates. You can even make a reservation at a confirmed price.
The curse and the blessing of the Amex card year-end report is that you can find out EXACTLY how much you’re spending eating out. If it’s scary (and mine was), here’s how to reduce the cost without sacrificing fun: Print money out of your computer…well, OK, it’s not money exactly, but at www.restaurant.com you can buy a gift certificate worth $25 for $10 or a $50 gift certificate for $20. If you’re hungry at 5 p.m., go on the site, put in your zip code, browse for an establishment, make a reservation and print out the coupon. You can be dining and saving money by 6 p.m.
Beauty Bail-Outs

Sure you need to make a few budget cuts, but yellow teeth and graying temples are not negotiable! Save a little at the hair salon by extending time between appointments and cover your roots at home. The kit’s singleuse ampoules are used twice a day for a week. Yes, it’s that simple. No messy trays or strips to deal with. gosmile.com
In a time when many businesses are sinking, Marci Kessler, owner of Doubletake Boutique in Short Hills, says she has never seen such extraordinary growth. The high-end consignment shop helps fahionistas turn designer goods into cash and offers shoppers luxury at a discount. Here’s another great find — a designer discount and resale boutique where you can shop either online or in person. The Couture Exchange has stores in Westfield and Shrewsbury whose treasures include Hermès, Fendi and Kate Spade handbags, shoes, belts, sunglasses. New with tags, “pre-loved” and vintage classics, they’re all there. www.the coutureexchange.com If your sights are set on a Prada bag or Burberry coat, be sure to check out www.retailmenot.com. The site lists hundreds of coupon codes and can be searched by brand or store. Before buying anything online, do a quick Google search by entering the store’s name and “coupon code” or “promotion code.”

Staying ‘Up’ in a Down Economy During difficult economic periods, anxiety and stress can become overwhelming. Instead of pulling the covers over our heads, Montville psychotherapist Dara Mastro says “to tackle the beast head-on” with these four steps:
1. Practice positive self talk. Instead of telling yourself “This is overwhelming,” or “I can’t handle this,” reframe your self-talk to statements such as, “I will do what it takes to deal with this,” or “I will succeed with plan B.” As unnatural as it may feel at first, continued positive self-talk statements will contribute to a sense of well being.
2. Reflect on the pros, not the cons. Write down on a piece of paper all you have accomplished thus far. When one views concrete accomplishments, motivation will likely kick in.
3. Next, set goals. Start with short-term objectives, and put a timeframe on each one. Your self-confidence will improve as you see your goals come to fruition.
4. Finally, laugh! Schedule some time to kick back and laugh with friends. Perhaps watch a comical movie or sitcom. The power of laughter enhances the spirit and brings positive energy your way. Try it, it really works!

The group's mission is to respond to the most pressing needs of people who are experiencing desperate times here in our own communities. GOG, founded by D. Jane Chagaris Albanese, is based on the Pay-It-Forward model of recognizing and encouraging altruism. “We encourage donor involvement by offering a flexible form of philanthropy. You can play a pivotal roll in the selection process of how your funds will be distributed.” Albanese says. Financial assistance was provided to a single mother who has breast cancer, and no medical insurance. A young woman who suffered cardiac arrest at the age of 48, who’s insurance cancelled her, receives massage therapy while still in a coma. A woman who’s welfare stopped at age 62 was helped in preventing eviction from her home. If you wish to become one of the Giants of Generosity, call 201.567.2622 or check out the group's Web site at www.giantsofgenerosity.org.

Peachy Keen August is New Jersey’s peach month and what better way to celebrate than with peach cobbler, peach ice cream, peach pie...well, you get the idea! Buy them straight from the field at a local farm like Terhune Orchards (Princeton, terhuneorchards.com), Melick’s Town Farm (Califon, melickstownfarm.com) or Alstede Farms (Chester, alstedefarms. com), where you can also pluck them yourself. Fragrant and juicy Jersey peaches also provide the inspiration for many local chefs. New Brunswick’s upscale bistro, The Frog and The Peach (frogandpeach.com), offers a special five-course menu featuring dishes accented with peaches prepared in different ways, from raw to grilled, in salsas and compotes. For a complete list of events, participating restaurants and farms, visit jerseypeaches.com. For recipes, see page 71. Peach Carpaccio with Duck Confit/Frog and the Peach

Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” may be slinging it out at the Chateau Salon in Franklin Lakes, but in other local salons all is serene, beautiful and even a little bit holy! East meets west at Zoku, the stylish Summit salon that has a New York vibe without the New York attitude. Zoku is one of just six salons chosen nationwide to introduce the “Art of Hair Ceremony” from Shu Umeura. The ritual seeks to create an oasis of calm and relaxation while restoring brilliance to lackluster locks. The experience starts with a cup of steaming green tea and a warm hand towel. A heated neck roll is provided to rest on while a customized blend of essential oils is painted on the hair in one-inch sections, followed by a shiatsu-inspired head massage. The multisensory treatment also includes eyeshades and a preprogramed iPod with tranquil music. Treatments run $25-$50, zokusalon.com, 908.273.9658 Bangz, long a fixture on Church Street in Montclair, has moved around the corner into a heavenly space — a former Masonic temple — to enhance the day spa experience and expand the salon’s offerings. The historic re-use project incorporates the original stained glass windows, brick work and soaring cathedral ceiling with modern and eco-friendly touches. The stunning multilevel space also has a separate Wellness Spa with many new services including anti-aging remedies, natural herbal soaks, laser hair removal, fillers, injectables and teeth whitening. bangz.net
