Take Time to Rediscover and Embrace Your Spirituality If faith is a part of your life and a death occurs, sometimes it may be challenged. Sometimes it is strengthened. Express your faith, if it is a part of your life, in a way that feels appropriate to you. Allow yourself to be around people who understand and support your religious beliefs. Remember, even if you have a strong faith, you still grieve and your need to mourn is still very important in order to help yourself heal. It is important to express both your faith and your grief. Excerpts of the above were taken from teachings by Dr. Alan D. Wolfelt, founder and director of the Center for Loss & Life Transition

The loss of a loved one is perhaps the most difficult and emotionally intense event we experience. As we struggle with accepting that the death of our loved one has occurred, we realize that life will never be the same as it was. It’s natural to find ourselves consumed by powerful, complex and sometimes conflicting emotions that can range from sadness and loneliness to guilt or anger. During our personal journey through grief, our reconciliation process can be nurtured with kindness and compassion from others and patience with ourselves. Take time.

Take Time to Mourn Grief is our feeling of loss and mourning is how we express our grief. Mourning is an essential part of healing. Allow yourself to mourn. Understand that it is natural to feel confused, lonely and deeply sad. Be patient with yourself through your mourning process; do not adopt assumptions about what you should or shouldn’t be doing, or how long your journey through the grieving process will take.

Take Time to Feel Your Pain There is only one way to heal and that is by living though the grieving process. We must go through it and not around it. Our capacity to love requires the necessity to grieve when someone you loved dies. You can’t heal unless you openly express your grief. Remember, grief is a process, not an event. Be patient and tolerant with yourself. The experience of grief is so powerful. So too, is your ability to help yourself heal.

Take Time to Share with Others Find caring friends and relatives who will listen without judging. Seek out those persons who will talk with you in your journey through grief. Avoid persons who are critical or who try to steal your grief from you. Comments such as “keep your chin up” may be well-intended, but you do not have to accept them.

Take Time to Make Any Important Decisions Don’t rush toward making any major decisions. You may have concerns regarding important documents, insurance benefits and tax responsibilities. There are people specifically trained to assist you in these areas. Take advantage of their expertise. But be sure to take time. If you must make a major decision, make sure you have someone you trust to advise you.

Take Time to Stay Healthy Pay attention and respect what your body tells you. If you deplete your energy, you will have less strength to care for yourself or others. If you need more rest or solitude, take extra time for yourself. You don’t owe anyone an explanation for any of your actions. Get plenty of rest. Eat balanced meals. Drink plenty of fluids. Caring for yourself will help maintain your physical strength. Nurture yourself.
