Focus On... professional development and career advancement PMI offers a rich diversity and depth of program content that allows you to tailor a personalized professional development experience to meet your specific interests and career goals. The “areas of focus” for this PMI Global Congress spotlight emerging trends in the profession, examine project management culture, and explore best practices and lessons learned from projects around the globe. Presentations in each area of focus are aimed at different career stages and learning styles.
Areas of Focus Education and Certification (ENC) What changes are being made in project management education? What does one really need to know, and how can one go about learning it? What criteria should be utilized to determine who can earn the prestigious PMP Credential? These are questions that could be answered by topics presented in this area.
New Trends (NTR)
6
Research, new software, new ideas and innovation are a part of many industries. Project management is no different. In addition, the impact of new laws requiring documentation of policies, procedures and finances not only for governmental projects, but also for projects in the private sector, requires corporations to operate in new ways. This area of focus will include new ideas and innovations that have been in place for less than two or three years and are still being evaluated as to their benefit to the profession, as well as the impact of new legislation on project managers and the organizations for which they work.
Advanced Topics for the PMP (PMP) While many topics presented at congresses are applicable to all project managers, individuals who hold the PMP Credential are often seeking a higher level of knowledge, advanced topics, and discussion of what their designation means. Presentation topics in this area of focus would be presented only by PMPs for other PMPs and could include any topic presented at an advanced level.
Team, Leadership and Marketing Skills (TLM) Some of the chief determinants to a project manager’s success are the ability to develop and maintain people skills, manage local and dispersed teams, address and accept global diversity, develop their own skills as a leader and be able to sell the concept of project management to all organizational levels. Topics in this area could include methods to enhance and promote one’s full range of interpersonal and leadership skills, to lead others to personal development, to create and maintain teams, to embrace diversity as a part of team management and techniques to market the concepts of project management to stakeholders.
Problems with Projects: How to Avoid or Fix Them (PWP) A corollary of Murphy's Law states, "Nothing ever gets built on schedule or within budget." One of the goals of project management is to work against that statement. Discerning a risk, mitigating that risk, and, should Murphy be right, solving the problem are vital parts of the project management process. Presentation topics in this area of focus could include any process or tool that assures Murphy was wrong.
Project Management in Specific Industries (PSI) Every industry exhibits specific qualities in the way it manages projects. Be it construction, information technology, government, pharmaceutical, research and development, or manufacturing, project management is modified, adjusted and, in general, tweaked to meet the demands of that industry. Topics in this area could include discussions and case studies of how project management is, and should be modified, to meet the needs of a specific industry.
Project Management Maturity (PMM)
Sponsored by:
The use of various project management maturity models and project management organizations www.pmadvisors.com has grown over the years. With programs such as OPM3 and CMMI, and the institution of organizational offices that focus purely on project management, new perspectives on how project management works are being developed. Topics in this area could include discussion of the growth of project management offices (PMOs) or any of the project management maturity processes in use today.
Project Management Tools and Approaches (PTA) As in most professions, there are certain techniques, tools and approaches that practitioners use to measure the effectiveness of their work. Knowledge and correct use of these techniques, tools and approaches are often considered basic skills in the field, and include means of measuring one’s success, best practices, use of resources, and change management skills. Presentation topics in this area could include measurement techniques, ROI, metrics, project management software tools, methodologies and best practices.
