Anti-seismic Structure - Rolling-Type Bearings (RTB)

Developed by the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering, The structure provides 360 level surface shock isolation. When subjected to shock, the friction generated between the axis and surface can dissipate the displacement.

Taiwan's Earthquake distribution (2015-2016)

6.5-7 6-6.5 5.5-6 Richter magnitude

2

1 storey buildings are more seismic durable.

However, land is scarce in Taiwan, therefore project designs of smaller areas should be adopted.

Mechanisms are implemented to reduce the degree of swing through friction dissipation.

The building is elevated to prevent water accumulating in the node points, which may result in a weaker structure.

Bamboo is choosen as main construction material.

RTB structure is implemented into the floors to enhance the seismic durability.

Shrinking first floor to increase number of beam-columns for stability while creating semioutdoor space.

Spiral staircase is used to connect the floors, with the beam-column inside helping to stabilize deformation.

Reinforced angle rack is added for the enhancement of structure.

Shade is added in the top storey to lower indoor temperature while creating a balcony.

Selection of wall construction material.

Historical Symbol Preservation - Palm Trees

NTUniversity was constructed during the Japanese colonial rule. The grand rows of palm trees is its symbolic design. Therefore, all existing trees are left untouched.

Renovation Design - Basin Plaza

The stairs on the right act as a barrier to redirect bicycle route, leaving the site center for pedestrian usage. Proportional bicycle users can access through a slope.

Current Site - Flat plaza

With a flat plaza, users will choose the convenient travel route, this causes a chaos of pedestrians and bicycles in addition to a lack of comfortable leisure space. Pedestrian

Renovation Design

Its floor plan originates from the arc movement produced by cars as they turn, forming a water-streak pattern.

Urban Planning Regulation

Urban planning specify a 8 meter public space within roadsides and 60% green coverage for park land. Parking Lot

Route Simplification

To achieve the maximum parking capacity and site integration, the routes are simplified.

Current Site

The site is devided by messy routes and, therefore, lacks integration and is hard to form a good space.

Surroundings

The site provides a bird's eye view of the surroundings, making it's appearance as important as functions.

The site has great parking usage difference between weekdays and weekends. Thus its design adopts a recreational design which allows it to be used as a park on weekdays while meeting the intense parking demands on weekends. Vehicle Entrance

Proposition 1

Proposition 2

Expansion of the wind-breaking forest area to create a comfortable recreational environment and increase bio-diversity.

Utilization of traffic benefits along with existing-activity-enhencements and historical-root-connection for tourism.

Strong and Unstable Winds

Damaged Biodiversity

Transportation Convenience

Hsinchu is located at the bottleneck of the Taiwanese Straits. Given that its surrounded by mountains, gales that pass through valleys result in strong air currents. When combined with the sea breeze and monsoon, the wind within is strong and unstable.

The construction of the highway and development means the breakwater has extende towards the sea. This has used up more of the muddy coast, damaging the biodiversity in the area and prohibiting the development of ecotourism.

The site is the final stop of highway 68, the starting point of a 17m coastal bicycle path but also the numerous bus routes that pass through from Hsinchu train station. This makes it a site with great tourism potential.
