Hello! I am Judy Mahfouz and I am in pursuit of excellence and impact. Since I graduated four years ago, I had the great opportunity to work with international studios in Dubai on interesting projects. I had the chance to work alongside exceptional leaders and designers in Woods Bagot and Perkins+Will in Dubai. Because of the nature of the market in Dubai, I was fortunate to work on so many projects within a very short time. My learning curve was indeed a very steep one. There is always a new challenge to overcome and accomplish. This experience showed me that I have great passion towards design and architecture, how I lose myself when I am doing work that I truly enjoy and that creating something beautiful is a very a rewarding job. I am very interested in story telling and I believe it strongly communicates to people. I also believe architecture and design is not only about form finding, but also about adding social and environmental value. Problem solving and site analysis are another aspect of design that I also integrate within it’s process to create projects relevant to its societies. It helps the project by giving it so much meaning as it strives to understand and celebrate it’s culture and it’s people. Within these four years, I also had the chance to explore life and try new things. I discovered a new passion within me suddenly emerging. It all started when I joined a volunteering trip with few of my friends to the tropical shores of Jamibiani in Zanzibar. We taught English to the community and reconstructed a nursery floor. We all went with one mission in mind, to help and give our time but little did we know that our whole life will change once we experience poverty first hand. It was indeed shocking to see communities and families living in extremely harsh built environment. I knew at that moment that I should contribute my skills towards giving and helping people live in better homes. A year later, I participated in a Leadership program by Sheikha Salama Bin Hamdan Foundation (SHF) called YouAE connect lead by Dr. Salvatore LaSpada. The program took place in Chiang Mai, Thailand and it focused on social entrepreneurship and philanthropy. We met with different nonprofit organizations and their leaders.


Listening to the stories and challenges they have faced was very eye opening. It expanded my horizon on many social topics such as human trafficking, refugee camps, women empowerment, special needs and HIV/AIDS crisis Thailand is facing. The YouAE connect program has inspired me to contribute by aligning my expertise to help solve core problems facing our societies. I plan to one day be part of reconstructing my home city Aleppo in Syria once the war is over. I recently joined an architectural humanitarian competition that encouraged an innovative design solution to the post war housing crisis in Syria. Through my research and attempt to find a solution, I realized that I want to work on a post disaster reconstruction for my hometown Aleppo in the future. I also had the opportunity to work on a research project in Perkins+Will by their nonprofit initiative called innovation incubator. I worked with the team on one of Syrians’ most challenging problems, Al Zaatari Refugee camp. I learnt about the challenges the camp is facing. The team responded by proposing strategic solutions to help the camp thrive into a better society. Today, I know I am passionate about design and strategic social change. The goal is to merge those two on every projects I end up work on whether designing a school in an isolated village in Africa or designing the next iconic tower in Dubai. This synergy is very relevant to the world today and we need to aim to create a positive impact every step of the way. It is also our responsibility to contribute our skills and expertise to the right direction. There is ultimate beauty in giving… This journey is the beginning of a long-term commitment to aligning aesthetic and social change … to doing something meaningful… to making a difference…

Judy graduated from the American University of Sharjah with Bachelors in Architecture in 2012. Since then, she worked with GAJ Architects, Woods Bagot and Perkins+Will in Dubai. She has a multi-disciplinary experience that includes Architecture and Urban design working on projects ranging from pre-concept to detail design. She is also very proficient in Revit, Rhino and Adobe Package software. She is also very conscious to integrate social responsibility within design.

She believes that it is her responsibility as an individual with abundant opportunities to design exceptional spaces to empower societies. Part A Social Responsibility


The main goal of this design is to create a neighborhood of dynamic renewal of the self and community. The project aims to not only rebuild the once vibrant homes, but the countries’ most valuable component, its people and culture! The design includes a post war remedy which consist of two main concepts, nature therapy and community healing. The wellness of the people and the war torn generations will be the first step for the Syria’s regeneration. Why consider a post war housing in Aleppo? Aleppo is one of the most destroyed cities in Syria because of the war crisis. The living conditions in Aleppo is very difficult and its needs an urgent plan to revive the city once the war is over. The civilians complain from shortage of water, electricity, heating and cooling systems. There is of course the major issue of safety. One main concern is the transformation of the social/cultural face of the city. Aleppo spatial infrastructure under the Assad regime and it’s corrupted system developed into two main conditions, informal and planed neighborhoods with the former more common than the later. In addition, the city is politically divided by two conflicting armies.

The concept of the master plan studies how to radically redevelop and rethink the typical housing and neighborhood typologies in Aleppo and emphasizing on generating a safe community for people to integrate in harmony. With the help of an urban landscaped strip, the neighbor will achieve the safety and social integration it needs. The proposal looks at developing a master plan that will regenerates the informalities and stitching them to the developed areas with the help of demolition war-torn buildings.

INFORMALITIES Aleppo’s Typical Housing Typology with central core and two appartments around the central core.

The ground floor is used for community outlets such as retail, F&B, gym and open gathering spaces.

Replace core with courtyard, a safe retreat and units hugs the open central core. Recreates the traditional Arabic house.

Vertical circulation coonection to public spaces. Main Entrance through core.

A grid of 10x10 m shapes the sizes of the size of the units resulting in a U-shaped mass.

Central ramp running from ground floor to roof allowing public walkway connection to be used instead of elevators to encourage walkability.

Innovation Incubator: Al Zaatari Refugee Camp Because our duties as professionals require us to take initiatives. Because we cannot turn an eye to what is happening. And if everything else fails, because we are humans. We write this paper to give a summarized insight to the current situation in Al Zaatari. We state facts, study factors and conditions, and reflect on the possibilities. This research looks at solutions and possible ways for the camp to have a positive impact on both the refugees and the host country. The camp as we propose it to be should have rehabilitative goals, and should play a main role in the economy of the host country and world as a whole. Simply putting it we aim to create a win-win situation to all. Economically, a Halfway City would provide incentives (incubation spaces) to refugees who succeed in entrepreneurship, development, aid, and education. With the confidence and opportunity to grow, the refugee becomes a change-maker rather than a consumer, and moves from a state of weakness and dependency to collaboration and independency.

The objective of the design is to create a structure that settles in harmony within its context, utilizes local materials and expertise and offers a flexible set of modules that ultimately provides the sustainable tools to educate and protect the future generations of Tonle Sap lake and its wildlife in Cambodia. Through studying the seasonal fluctuations, the settlement patterns and the urgent needs of the villagers, the design responds directly to the challenging dynamics of the site and puts forward a flexible solution to the pressing issues the locals face on a daily basis. The idea behind the design is derived from the behavior of the Tonle Sap villagers, the way they live in small structures, respond to the wet and dry season and move to perform daily chores. The concept is to create a flexible and modular structures that are adaptable to the villagers living on the Tonle Sap lake.

Children’s Home Mkuranga District

A group of about fifty students, young graduates and practicing architects and designers in the UAE have been involved in the design of a Children’s Home and School in the Mkuranga region in Dar el Salam, Tanzania. Mkuranga is a rural area filled with sporadic and informal settlements with a large number of orphan children. Large field Charity Organization in Tanzania has bought a piece of land, which is designated as an orphanage in the community development in a predominately Muslin population. The area of the plot is 30 hectares on a sloping site. The project will accommodate 300 children, ages between 6 months to 18 years old. The proposed master plan includes accommodation for the children and their caretakers, a small nursery and primary school, community areas, administration and guests rooms, services and kitchen, playing fields and landscaping. The following is the work of Team C: Nursery School and Primary School. The strategy is to create a modular structure that is adaptable to becoming a classroom or an accommodation room. The concept is to place the classrooms around a central open space as well as having shaded common area in between the classrooms.

Seven characters from different backgrounds living in the AUE joined together to embark on a volunteering trip that will change their lives. This was the start of AnaMzungu! Mzungu: {m.zun.gu} A term in Swahili to refer to a white skinned person. The group taught English to the community and re-constructed the flooring for a nursery in a village called Jambiani, Zanzibar. It was the first time for the majority of the group to witness poverty first hand. Instead of helping others, they found they have helped themselves in seeing the world differently. They felt very responsible to share their story in UAE. The group decided to encourage volunteering abroad and to spread this message through participating in the Sikka Art fair to showcase their photos and footage. Vistors reacted greatly to Anamzungu story and they left feeling inspired and excited to embarak on their on volunteering journey.

YouAE Connect is a leadership in development program by Sheikha Salama bin Hamdan Foundation. The team of 15 UAE locals and residents were chosen for this program. The program challenged the participants to understand the pressing social issues in Chiang Mia, Thailand. It aslo gave them the chance to meet exceptional leaders who were the key drivers of transformation within their societies. The team learnt about ashoka, human trafficking, elephant exploration, special needs negligence, refugee camps crisis, AIDS/HIV crisis and women empowerment. The program main goal is to inspire the team to become change makers within their societies, and come up with ideas to strategically solve problems by witnessing real life examples. The program also continued for three months after the trip in which the team read and examined other case studies from the book “How to change the World� by David Bornstein. It is very easy to be paralysed in a world with so many problems emerging, but this kind of exposure brings hope. The world can become a better place and it starts with the decision to strive to make it better!

Part B Work Experience


Brief: To create the most luxurious resort in the Maldives, the team designed a destination that gives the visitor a luxury of choices with a focus on an invidualized guest experience. The master plan is located on and empty island close to the capital of the Maldives, Male. Research: In order to design the top resort in Maldives, research is done to existing resorts to investigate existing competitors. Environmental research is also carried out to propose an ecological master plan. Design: Three conceptual frameworks were proposed for the island formation. All frameworks were suggested with different infrastructure and identities. A final concept was chosen and developed fully to achieve the vision master plan. The design of the islands are inspired by the natural formations of the delta islands landscapes. Three architectural typologies of the villas are produced to accommodate different visitor experience. The typologies are the beach villa, over water villa, and the floating villa. Each made exclusively private and luxurious.

Blue Waters Island

Introduction: Blue waters is a development by Meraas Holding consisting of the iconic Ferris wheel “Dubai Eye�, retail and entertainment outlets, residential and hospitality buildings. Brief: Meeras Holdings inhouse design team called Studio M initially designed the retail and entertainment district. Woods bagot team selected to develop the facades and buildings plans of the retial district taking it from concept to site. The master plan consisted of 27 buildings. The retail district included F&B outlets, high end retail outlets, the first wax museum in UAE and a huge indoor theme park. The team collaborated together with Studio M to develop the design of the facades. The facade consisted of interactive and parametric designs, contemporary materials and open facades.

Introduction: Belgrade residential towers are part of a new master plan design in Belgrade along the river by Eagle Hills and Emaar. They are considered the iconic towers of the master plan. Brief: Woods bagot team was asked to develop a conceptual scheme for the towers. The team was selected for pre-design and concept design. Design: Its strategic location places it at the center of a new waterfront community that need to actively engage with the river to create a thriving destination whilst responding to the boulevards and public streets that characterizes its more urban edges. The Podium and Terrace concept support any orientation. The active podium edge can engage with both the riverside and the city.

JGE Hillside Villas

Brief: The project tackles the design of “20 high quality villa� in the Jumeriah Golf Estate. The overall plot layout takes into account the fact that there is one type of villa. Design: The concept of the design is inspired by ultimate luxury is now about experience over objects. The theme of the next generation villas incorporates unlocking views to the golf course, transparency and visual connection from within, a sense of escapism, blurring the boundaries, synergy of indoor/outdoors spaces, bathroom gardens and a resort-like landscapes.

Part C Academic


The Theme of the final architectural studio was films and machine with a futuristic vision. As a basketball player, I was inspired by my passion and I decided to analyze the game and the basketball players under the requested theme. I watched films of basketball games and traced their motion. The complexities of the game lead me to only analyze the motion of one player. Through a simulated environment and digital photography, I was able to document the motion of certain basketball skills. Only two dimensional waves were produced. To create three dimensional formations of those waves, I experimented by twisting acrylic rods around each other. I then created a machine that controlled the points on the waves. This control allowed endless possibilities of form to be generated. Next step of this exploration is to place it on the World Islands of Dubai. The intertwined curves and surfaces stretched along the site. The surfaces seemed like a secondary surface connecting isolated islands. Those surfaces are perfect for people who would like to run around the islands. The curves weave around each other to create one continuous loop. The machine produced becomes an training machine measuring heart rate, time, speed and other relevant data. It is perfect for marathons and triathlon athletes. This running loop is also a memory machine helping athletes record their progress.

The theme of this architectural studio encouraged us to look at hinder lands and landscapes. This projects is inspired by the extremely dense city like hinterlands and it reciprocate that grid like aesthetic within its form. The spaces are carved within the dense grid to allow room for circulation and activity. The projects analyses one of Dubai’s most dense and old neighborhoods Khalid bin Al Walid streets. The street is extremely crowded with residential and commercial buildings. The challenge here is to create a community and multi sport arena space that first gives room for entertainment and recreation within the urban fabric as well as give the street more value by adding an attraction point. The grid structure is inserted on a metro line to invite visitors from other parts of the city as well as to bridge between the two opposing streets giving access to everyone in the neighborhood.
