HOUSING 2016

Playgrounds yield greater ROI than other amenities, earning their keep with curb appeal, resident retention, and affordable ownership. It’s a smart investment—because even as demographics shift, families still need access to quality outdoor play. The challenge is finding the ideal play design for your space, your residents, and your budget. Fortunately, we make it simple. Renting vs. Owning

As millennials enter their peak home-buying years, their reluctance to enter the housing market could change. The cohort’s sheer size, plus its desire to settle down in the future, could lead to a surge in home sales.

What’s this have to do with playgrounds? Aren’t millennials self–absorbed loners? A Pew Research Center study says otherwise:

70% want to get married someday. 74% want to have kids.

HARBOUR LANDING CONNECTING WITH SUCCESS THROUGH PLAY Spanning 780 acres in Southwest Regina, Saskatchewan, Harbour Landing was designed to meet an increasing market demand for neighborhoods where people can live, work, and play in the same area.

A combined effort between developer Dream Development, and planning, engineering and landscape architectural consultant Stantec, Harbour Landing was designed to create an ideal balance of apartments, rental homes and single family-owned homes, along with commercial offices and a variety of retail and dining spaces. Its extensive recreational space includes 11 parks and 6 playgrounds. Why so many? For one, they enhance land use efficiency. Harbour Landing used integrated solutions to meet municipal and provincial drainage and open space requirements. But their play investment goes beyond requirements. According to Stantec spokesman Brad Wilson, “Dream Development realizes the value of play, and they’re ready to commit space to that. Stantec shares that commitment.”

At the heart of Harbour Landing, a dino playground provides a centerpiece of fun, educational play value. It also helps to connect Harbour Landing to the larger surrounding community—organizations such as the Royal Saskatchewan Museum and the Saskatchewan Science Centre have collaborated to create community events in the prehistoric park for children and parents. It shows how play value drives property value—creating an attractive destination, a point of connection, and most importantly, a thriving community.

Here. Now. Together. The where, when, how (and why) of play. Here, in the real world. In the midst of physical forces and objects that challenge and develop strength, balance, coordination and confidence. Now, relevant to the context, pressures and preferences of today’s children and families. Geared toward their evolving needs—based on the most current developmental research. Together through play, face–to–face, interacting in meaningful ways. The communication and cooperation that strengthens emotional and intellectual intelligence and social bonds.
