For the last 10 years, HoLa Hora Latina has celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with several activities in Knoxville, TN. HOLA FESTIVAL in downtown Knoxville, a free-admission event, voted the best folk art festival in Tennessee for two years in a row. AUDIENCE: 20,000 people

Plaza Hola emerges from Latino folk artists needs to communicate and grow roots in order to flourish in East Tennesse. The welcoming interest of our culturally connected community, provides the fertile ground where traditions become crafts.

Engage the community, create and share. Plaza Hola will offer workshops, develop authentic Latino products with a strong educational component. In time this will help improve artist’s income. Workshop participants will learn craft-making and culture, improve Hispanics integration, increase audience’s knowledge, encourage Hispanic role models and mentors for children in school.

A field study on Latino folk arts yielded over 60 interviews and hundreds of photos, video, and audio files. It speaks to the talent and contributions of immigrants, preservation of cultural traditions, and opportunities for growth. This documentation project will be furthered by promotion of Plaza Hola as specified in this project, helping us locate new folk artists, in a wider geographical area.
BOOK + CD The materials collected over 2 years of field work will be best appreciated in a multimedia book format. Coupled with an Opening event on First Friday, it will celebrate Latino traditions and craftmaking. Teachers will make use of this book in their classrooms.
