SYNTHESIS OF POSSIBILITIES

JUI-HUNG TSENG 2014 - 2017 Portfolio

SYNTHESIS OF POSSIBILITIES Architecture has always been a synthesis of possibilities, where all factors combine and merge to form an entity of breathtaking complexity. As an islander from Taiwan, I have grown to absorb knowledge from nature and obtain various experiences from my surroundings. With this upbringing and background in Architecture, I have wanted to be a part of creating our everyday environment, not only through professional practice but also in educating the next generation of designers.

INDEX

In my thesis project, I chose to do research on a newsworthy, relevant issue of the time, which was the reconstruction of the airport in Taipei. I learned various analysis methods to support my idea on the transformation of the airport to Olympic Park and the Airship Base. I not only did the preliminary master planning of the site, which is about 605,000 square meters, but it was also my first time designing such a sizable skyscraper. My planning and architecture represent the response of the synthesis of possibilities in the next generation. I can attribute who I am today from my experiences in my career, my education in architecture and my passion in thinking possibilities around us. I have always looked beyond what was the conventional path, stayed true to myself and chose a career path that was unique to me. I look forward to the opportunity of studying abroad and gaining valuable experiences that will continue shaping me and taking me down paths that are my own.

2028 TAIPEI Reconstruction of Taipei Shongshang Airport

ABOVE AIRSHIPORT

ABOVE

AIRSHIPORT Aviation has made the world a smaller place. The project is to design an airship transportation center in Taipei based on the reconstruction of Songshan Airport (TSA). Airships flew at the previous generation, and they are also the new aircraft nowadays due to the transference of energy and opportunities of the commercial. The use of verticality of structures opens up new opportunities for development and expansion of Airshiports, a newly designed airship transportation center, into smaller footprints, leaving more available land for green space as well as for other development possibilities. The typology of today’s airport is focused on air travel first. With other uses, such as commercial spaces, recreational spaces, and express center, verticality will promote mixed-typology development. In the future, taking a flight will be more like walking to the corner to board the bus than the often-harrowing experience it is today. By embracing verticality, mixed-typology development, and advances in technology, the future of aviation will be fundamentally reformed.

If the Songshang Airport is demolished, the sky of Taipei is no longer restricted.

REASONS OF DEMOLITION

REASON OF COUNTRY The growth of international cities tends to be "mega-city". Without the demolition of TSA airport, we could not implement "Transit Oriented Development" in Taipei.

REASON OF CITY

Based on the Urban Comprehensive Planning in Taiwan, TPE airport has not been an important line of transportation.

This project was inspired by Mr. Po-Wei Lai’s book, “Regeneration, Reframing, and Recast.” Converting an abandoned riverside cranes into residential spaces is the major task of this project. It is experimental and conceptual, and the idea should be able to apply to similar abandoned facilities over the world. Cranes at harbors, rivers and canals usually become an important part of skyline of a city. They are massive, expansive and

unignorable. We would like to bring fresh energy/function to an abandon facility by turning this old structure into new spaces with minimum alterations. The CRANE HOUSES are only for rent, it would be a wonderful place for residents to be away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

EPISODE INSTALLATION ART COMPETITION We want people to feel the composition of the space when they enter the architecture, like how a seemingly limited space is created to present an entrance. We think this idea is essential to the department of architecture, and by our work, students from other departments may have a bodily experience of the impact of the architecture to space. Due to the statements above, the department of architecture is very mysterious to people from different fields. The department of architecture is like a black hole, and our work is a path to it. When you walk through the rotating pentagonal structure, the structure will make the chaotic random life scene into order. Structure lining sparse to dense creates a magnetic visual effect, and the lighting arrangement is a sign of the entrance to a unique space.

Joint Design The joint is made by 9 pieces of board in 4 kinds of shapes and can connect 4 paper pipes. It is modularized, that helped us easier to produce.

MARTELLO TOWER Y, ENGLAND

VIADUC DES ARTS , FRANCE

One of the most beautiful buildings in Debrecen's Great Forest was built in 1912 on the basis of plans by builders of Fried and Adorján. The 42-meter-long Water Tower has been the security base for the clinics of the University of Debrecen since the 1960s, and performs this task smoothly after reconstruction. There are 1000 cubic meters of water in the water of the building. Thanks to the complex renovation, not only the building has been renewed but the Water Tower has been given new spaces and new features, so it can be right to become one of Debrecen's most sought after tourist destinations and become a popular meeting place for hikers and locals.

The Found was originally built to defend Napoleonic forces in the 1800s and, after a stylish renovation, offers luxury self-catering accommodation with a difference. An occasion house with a capital 'O', this imposing Martello tower in Bawdsey comprises almost a million bricks wrapped around one huge central brick shaft, inviting guests to kick back over three floors of contemporary living spaces. Entering on the first floor, guests are welcomed into a circular snug area laid with shaggy rugs and stacked with logs for stoking up the fire. A spiral staircase sweeps up to the rooftop level, where floor-to-ceiling windows provide 360 degree views of the wild shingle Suffolk coastline.

In 1853, a concession was granted to the Examples Paris-Strasbourg Railway Company to build and use the “Bastille/Bois de Vincennes” GROUND CYLINDER LIQUID line running from the east to the west of Paris’ 12th arrondissement. The Bastille railway line, inaugurated in 1859, was abandoned in1969. The uneven levels of the land ORIGINAL FUNCTION / meant that a viaduct with 67 arches had CURRENT FUNCTION to be built, along a length of more than a mile between the Bastille and the rue Rambouillet. THE COMPLETENESS OF THE TEMPLE SQUARE. THE 7 TEMPLES DO NOT HAVE A COMPLETE SQUARE.

The temples in the urban gaps are what make Taiwan cities significantly different from their counterparts around the world. These temples are like urban parasites. These temples in urban taxonomy are fulfilled by their periphery, the genes of Taiwan’s landscapes. The Second Apartment Building of Nanjichang, aka Zhongxu Community, was completed in 1972. As a five-story building with a courtyard, it was the model of its kind at that time. Rather than an apartment building, it is more like a community. There is a variety of commercial space on the ground floor, including breakfast shops, barbershops, pharmacies, and grocery stores to meet the residents’ everyday needs. The Nanjichang neighborhood has the largest public housing complex, which was built to accommodate residents of illegal buildings; however, there is now, ironically, the biggest complex of illegal add-ons. To serve the purpose of relocating in large quantity, maximized number of units make each living quarter cramped, forcing

the residents to occupy the public circular corridor to place their washing machines, refrigerators, clothes horses, etc., and to build add-ons upwards or outwards to vie for more space. Those illegally installed window railings and extra door on the roof have become a notorious signature of the apartment building, making it look like a giant birdcage. Various parasite temples hide in the apartment building. Two of them facing each other diagonally through the courtyard are the most popular, which extend their squares to the public corridor, where residents gather to chat and gossip; hence the joss paper burners are moved to the courtyard. The market temple in the basement was left by the vendors of the obsolete market. These seven different temples reside in the building, but there are no factions, which is the very embodiment of inclusiveness of folk belief in Taiwan. They hide in units on different floors. The existence of the seven-in-one temples brings the residents a sense of security.

CITY MAP The game is started from the base city map which is consisted of four big blocks. Players could combine them at random.

PROJECT 5.a .b

The single blocks are built during playing. They are classified into five categories by the taxonomies in Parasitic Temples: Natural, Building, Road, Water, and Special. They correspond to five colors.

EVOLUTIONARY TREE

Based on the urban growth and subjective game setting, each parasitic temples we selected in the game is given defferent level. The evolutionary tree of temples is the main factor in the game to develop strategy.

UI DESIGN

From 2D to 3D In the beginning, the blocks are designed in square, like the famous game called Carcassonne did. The roads are connected at four corners. Later, we transferd the block card itself into isometric perspective.
