Meet Tonight’s Artists

20 Juilliard Jazz Calendar of Events, Spring-Summer 2011

Greetings from Juilliard President Joseph W. Polisi

I

Our young jazz artists and the members of the faculty have become an integral part of the Juilliard experience, through collaborative performances and concerts and tours beyond the walls of our School. With creativity, energy, discipline, and pure joy, Juilliard’s jazz program has had a transformative impact on Juilliard and the world beyond. We look forward to many more years of swing and joyful sounds within the halls of this great School through the creativity of our jazz artists.

Christian Steiner

t is with considerable enthusiasm and pride that I welcome you all to this special celebration of ten years of Jazz at Juilliard. As I have said so often during these ten years, I cannot imagine how Juilliard survived without jazz before the initiation of this great program.

Juilliard Jazz at 10 by Juilliard Jazz Artistic Director Carl Allen Greetings Jazz Community,

A

s the Juilliard Jazz department celebrates its 10th year, I express sincere gratitude to all who have contributed to this milestone. As a musician who learned in the classroom as well as on the bandstand, it has been my distinct honor to replicate that environment in this educational institution. Along with our incredible faculty, I grew up with the great fortune of witnessing the giants of jazz – the inspiring musicians who created this art form. The lessons that one must learn about how to play jazz music come from performance experience, and playing with the masters on a consistent basis allows one to discover which techniques are most effective. When you implement what you learn from the classroom to the bandstand, you get the feedback that molds you into the best musician possible. Our talented students have grown as young artists by studying and performing with seasoned artists as well as with their peers. They tour on the road, gaining the skills necessary to network for a career in jazz and to navigate in diverse cultures. We often give the students opportunities to teach, which we feel is essential to the success of their careers and to their musical development. We give them as many performance opportunities as possible in an array of environments and situations so everyone understands how to effectively communicate this music, whether in a small venue, concert hall, or stadium. We believe in the philosophy “each one, teach one” – that every student be afforded the opportunity to be a sideman and a leader and understand what it means to be in each role. Juilliard Jazz students are able to function and perform as a group, but they also have remarkable improvisation abilities. They want to be challenged by our faculty, by their peers, guest artists and by themselves. We expose the students to today’s jazz masters, the byproduct of which is for the great artists to employ them. Thus, for the next generation of jazz musicians, the future of jazz is here.

Juilliard JAZZ A Brief History

J

uilliard Jazz is the most innovative jazz education program today. Conceptualized by Juilliard’s president, Dr. Joseph W. Polisi, and Wynton Marsalis, the program initially began as a collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center. It now stands on its own as the model of jazz education others seek to emulate. Juilliard Jazz has adapted the tradition of learning jazz on the bandstand for the collegiate environment. Students of all degree levels regularly perform together as well as with the faculty. National and international touring is an integral component of the program. Students conduct master classes and clinics, and learn first-hand how to travel and work on the road. They are introduced to different cultures and venues in preparation for careers in jazz. Students also have the opportunity to teach alongside the jazz faculty. Juilliard Jazz offers degrees at bachelor, master, and artist “After having many diploma levels. Today, the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra and its ensembles play more than 50 performances annually, including appearances at the Detroit Jazz Festival and New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and tour to destinations such as Costa Rica, Colombia, Japan, Spain, and Brazil. The ensembles perform regularly at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and the worldrenowned Blue Note in New York City. For the past several seasons they also have enjoyed week-long runs at Jazz at Lincoln Center with guest artists such as Kenny Barron, Lew Tabackin, Gerald Wilson, Bobby Watson, Ernie Andrews, Tom Harrell, and Sean Jones.

Meet Tonight’s Artists THE HOSTS Bassist, composer, arranger, educator, curator, and administrator Christian McBride, a Grammy Award winner, has been one of the most important and most omnipresent figures in the jazz world for twenty years. Philadelphia-born, Mr. McBride moved to NYC to further his classical studies at Juilliard, only to be snatched up by alto saxophonist Bobby Watson. As a sideman in the jazz world, he’s worked with Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Pat Metheny. In the R&B world, he’s not only played with, but also arranged, for Isaac Hayes, James Brown, Natalie Cole, Chaka Khan, and Lalah Hathaway. In the pop/rock world, he’s collaborated with Sting, Carly Simon, Don Henley, and Bruce Hornsby. In the hip-hop/neo-soul world, he’s collaborated with Roots, D’Angelo, and Queen Latifah. In other specialty projects, he’s worked closely with opera legend Kathleen Battle, bass virtuoso Edward Meter, the Shanghai Quartet, and the Sonus Quartet. Since 2000, he has been a bandleader with the Christian McBride Band. One of the most commercially successful American saxophonists to earn prominence since the 1980s, David Sanborn has inspired countless other musicians. Although Mr. Sanborn has worked in many genres, his solo recordings typically blend instrumental pop, R&B, and lately, more and more traditional jazz. He released his first solo album, Taking Off, in 1975, but has been playing saxophone since before he was in high school, when he was inspired by the great Chicago blues artists near his hometown of St. Louis. In fact, having contracted polio at the age of three, Sanborn learned the saxophone as part of his treatment therapy. Veteran bassist and composer Marcus Miller joined Sanborn on the 1981 album Voyeur and the single “All I Need Is You” won Sanborn his first Grammy Award for Best R&B Instrumental Performance. In his three-and-a-half decade career, Mr. Sanborn has released 24 albums, won six Grammy Awards, and has had eight Gold albums and one Platinum album. He continues to be one of the most highly active musicians of his genre. Considered as a whole, he is an artist who pushes the limits and continues to make music that challenges the mind and goes Straight to The Heart. GUEST ARTISTS In a career spanning five decades, pianist Monty Alexander has built a reputation exploring and bridging the worlds of American jazz, popular song, and the music of his native Jamaica, finding in each a sincere spirit of musical expression. In the process, he has performed and recorded with artists from every corner of the musical universe and entertainment world: Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin, 8

Barbara Hendricks, Bill Cosby, Bobby McFerrin, Sly Dunbar, and Robbie Shakespeare, among others. He maintains an active touring schedule, from intimate jazz clubs to concert halls and jazz festivals around the globe. His collaborations span multiple genres, styles, and generations. A testament to his versatility, The Good Life, on Chesky Records is a collection of songs written and popularized by one of his all time favorite artists and good friends, Tony Bennett. As a leader, he has recorded more than 60 albums to date. In 2000, the Jamaican Government awarded Monty Alexander the title of Commander in the Order of Distinction for outstanding services to Jamaica as a worldwide music ambassador. His current release on the popular label Jazz Legacy Productions is titled Uplift. With more than 200 recordings to his credit, the Milwaukee-born Carl Allen, Artistic Director of Juilliard Jazz, is a New York-based drummer, sideman, bandleader, entrepreneur, and educator whose propulsive percolations have provided soulful and syncopated support for three decades. Born in 1961, Mr. Allen grew up on gospel, R&B, and funk, but later turned to jazz after hearing an LP by saxophonist Benny Carter. He studied with drum instructor Roy Sneider and band director Robert Siemele. His first hometown gigs were with sax greats Sonny Stitt and James Moody. Mr. Allen studied at the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay from 1979 to 1981, and transferred to William Paterson College in New Jersey, where he graduated in 1983 with a bachelor of music degree in Jazz Studies and Performance. He joined trumpeter Freddie Hubbard a year before his graduation, served as his musical director for eight years, and made many recordings with the trumpeter including Double Take and Life Flight. Mr. Allen also has performed with Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Jennifer Holliday, J.J. Johnson, Sammy Davis Jr., Branford Marsalis, Kenny Garrett, Lena Horne, Ruth Brown, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Bobby Hutcherson, Mike Stern, Nellie McKay, Phil Woods, Benny Green, Cyrus Chestnut, Joe Henderson, Billy Childs, and many others. Mr. Allen’s sideman discography also includes Jackie McLean (Dynasty), Donald Harrison (Indian Blues, Noveau Swing), Donald Byrd (A City Called Heaven), and Art Farmer (The Company I Keep). Piccadilly Square, released in 1989, was Mr. Allen’s first CD as leader, followed by The Dark Side of Dewey, The Pursuer, Testimonial, and Get Ready, his 2007 Mack Avenue debut release with bassist Rodney Whitaker. Mr. Allen was again joined by Mr. Whitaker for a recently released second album, Work to Do. Benny Golson is an internationally famous jazz legend. He has played in the bands of Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Earl Bostic, and Art Blakey. He has made major contributions to the world of jazz with such standards such as Killer Joe, I Remember Clifford, Along Came Betty, Stablemates, Whisper Not, Blues March, and Five Spot After Dark. He has recorded over 30 albums for many recording companies in the United States and Europe under his name and with other major artists. He has written more than 300 compositions. His prolific writing includes scores for hit TV series and films, such as M*A*S*H, Mission Impossible, The Academy Awards, Bill Cosby’s last TV show, and many others. He has been honored with doctorates from William Paterson College and Berklee School of Music and was named an NEA Jazz Master in 1996. In 2003, he appeared in Steven Spielberg’s The Terminal with Tom Hanks, which premiered in June 2004. 9

Benny Green Born in New York in 1963, Benny Green grew up in Berkeley, California, and began classical piano studies at the age of seven. Influenced by his father, a tenor saxophonist, his attention soon turned to Jazz: Benny played in school bands before hooking up with Jazz singer Fay Carroll. Since then, Green has performed with Bobby Watson, Betty Carter (1983 – 1987), and Art Blakey’s band, which he joined in 1987. He remained a Jazz Messenger through late 1989 and then began working with Freddie Hubbard’s quintet. In 1993, Oscar Peterson chose Mr. Green as the first recipient of the City of Toronto’s Glenn Gould International Protégé Prize in Music. That year, he replaced Gene Harris in Ray Brown’s Trio, working with the veteran bass player until 1997. From 1997 on, he resumed his freelance career, leading his own trios, accompanying singers like Diana Krall and concentrating on his own solo piano performances. His recording career includes more than 100 sessions. He continues to tour and teach. He recently completed a ten-week engagement as the musical director of the Monterey Jazz Festival All-Star 50th Anniversary Tour. Green’s latest album, titled Source, is available on Jazz Legacy Productions. Jimmy Heath has long been recognized as a brilliant instrumentalist and a magnificent composer. He is the middle brother of the legendary Heath Brothers (Percy Heath/bass and Tootie Heath/drums) and is the father of Mtume. Mr. Heath has performed with nearly all of the jazz greats of the last 50 years, from Howard McGhee, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis to Wynton Marsalis. During his career, he has performed on more than 100 record albums including seven with The Heath Brothers and twelve as a leader. He also has written more than 125 compositions, many of which have become jazz standards and have been recorded by other artists. Heath is also a respected arranger and is credited with 130 compositions and 12 CDs as a leader. His compositions have been played and recorded by Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Ahmad Jamal, Cannonball Adderley, Chet Baker, Clark Terry, Dexter Gordon, Milt Jackson, Yusef Lateef, Blue Mitchell, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Heath is also leader of the Jimmy Heath Big Band. In 2003, Heath was named an NEA Jazz Master. Currently, he maintains an extensive performance schedule and continues to conduct workshops and clinics through the United States, Europe, and Canada. One of the many young hard-bop revivalists to have arrived on the scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Kenny Washington has been in demand by more established musicians, playing with such veterans as Lee Konitz, Betty Carter, Johnny Griffin, Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, and Tommy Flanagan. He studied with Dizzy Gillespie drummer Rudy Collins, and attended the LaGuardia High School for Music and Art. A prolific freelancer with an enormous discography, he has a strong interest in jazz history and has written liner notes for and/or helped prepare classic jazz re-releases by Art Blakey and Count Basie, among others. He has worked as an announcer at the New Jersey jazz radio station, WBGO. He has been on the faculty of The Juilliard School since 2008.

While most girls were interested in playing with dolls at the age of eight, Sharel Cassity was begging for a saxophone. Thankfully, she received an old Conn alto for Christmas the following year, and “the rest is history,” as she is developing into one of today’s most vibrant jazz saxophonists. After living in New York for two years, Cassity earned a scholarship to the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music to complete her B.A., and it was there that she studied with saxophonists Vincent Herring and Steve Wilson. In 2005, Cassity gained entry to the Jazz Studies program at The Juilliard School and completed her Master’s degree under the direction of saxophonist Victor Goines. At Juilliard, Cassity formed relationships with classmates Michael Dease and Thomas Barber, who also appeared on her first solo album, Just for You (DW Records, 2008). Cassity’s mission is “to use the history of blues, swing, bebop, post bop and contemporary jazz to reflect the sound of my generation and the time we are living.” Cassity’s sophomore release, Relentless (Jazz Legacy Productions), has been described as a testament to her abilities as a performer and writer, and a shining example of her poise, song-bird lyricism, and purpose. Born on the island of Trinidad in 1983, Etienne Charles defies easy musical categorization. Immersed in his father’s vast record collection and suffused with the sounds of calypso, steel pan, and African Shango drumming, Etienne imbibed many of the influences that presently constitute the diverse colors of his harmonic palette. An alumnus of The Juilliard School, Charles has received critical acclaim for his exciting performances, thrilling compositions, and a knack for connecting with audiences worldwide. In 2006, Charles, won the Jazz Division of the National Trumpet Competition at George Mason University and released his debut album, Culture Shock, to critical acclaim. In 2009, Etienne, a former Juilliard Morse Fellow and William Schuman Prize Winner released Folklore, an enticing album of original music melding jazz improvisation and harmony with 11

folk rhythms and chants inspired by the African experience of Trinidad & Tobago. The album was named the #6 Jazz Album of 2009 by NPR. In July, Charles will release his third album, Kaiso, on his independent label Culture Shock Music. He has performed and recorded with greats in many genres, including Roberta Flack, Wynton Marsalis, Johnny Mandel, Ralph MacDonald, Maria Schneider, the Count Basie Orchestra as well as Marcus Roberts, Monty Alexander, Gerald Wilson, Frank Foster, Rene Marie, Lord Blakie, and David Rudder. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at Michigan State University. Michael Dease has been recognized as the premier jazz trombonist of his generation. Since moving to New York in 2001, Dease has performed and recorded with Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Heath, Illinois Jacquet, Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton, Claudio Roditi, Slide Hampton, Charles Tolliver, Mark Whitfield, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars, and a host of others. Dease received the B.M. and M. M. from The Juilliard School, completing studies with renowned teachers Joseph Alessi, Victor Goines, Wycliffe Gordon, John Lee, and Steve Turre. As a recording artist for Jazz Legacy Productions, Dease’s fourth CD as a leader, Grace (JLP, 2010) met with rave reviews across the jazz community. Other releases include Clarity (Bluesback, 2008), Dease Bones (D Clef, 2007), and The Takeover (2005). His other passions include the operation of his record label, D Clef Records, and educational activities as an instructor at Queens College CUNY, and The New School, NYC. Many of Dease’s former students have won international competitions, gained entrance to the world’s finest music conservatories, and excelled as professional musicians. Cleveland native Dominick Farinacci has had a tremendous amount of success both nationally and worldwide. When Dominick was only 17 years old, Wynton Marsalis heard him play in Cleveland and invited him to New York City to perform on a special PBS “Live from Lincoln Center” broadcast. Shortly after that, Dominick was one of 18 artists invited to be a part of the inaugural class of the Jazz Studies program at The Juilliard School. While attending Juilliard, Dominick balanced his studies with his professional career, signing a major record contract with a Japanese record label that sky-rocketed his career throughout Japan. His CD’s placed #1 on the jazz charts in Japan and garnered him the International New Star Award. In America, he was awarded 1st place honors in the Carmine Caruso International Trumpet Competition and the New Star Award from Disney, and has continued to make a name for himself touring the country headlining major clubs and festivals. Last February he released his U.S. debut CD, Lovers, Tales & Dances, collaborating with the legendary producer Russ Titleman, who has produced hits for Eric Clapton, James Taylor, and many others. He will release his second U.S. CD on July 26th, 2011, Twilight Blue. Born in Buffalo, NY, Carmen Intorre developed an early interest in music and began playing drums at age five. A graduate of the Institute for Jazz Studies at The Juilliard School, he has already performed and recorded with numerous musicians such as George Benson, Benny Golson, George Coleman, Bucky Pizzarelli, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Lew Tabackin, Larry Coryell, Bobby Watson, and many others. Carmen coproduced and recorded on Joey DeFrancesco’s latest CD, Never Can Say 12

Goodbye: The Music of Michael Jackson, which received a 2011 Grammy Nomination in The Best Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year category. Carmen also performs with Joey DeFrancesco and had the pleasure of performing with him alongside Dr. Lonnie Smith on the PBS show “Legends of Jazz,” hosted by Ramsey Lewis. Currently, Carmen performs with vocalist Hilary Kole, vibraphonist Joe Locke, and organist Pat Bianchi. Carmen just completed recording his debut CD as a leader for Random Act Records. The CD will feature performances by Joey DeFrancesco, Pat Bianchi, John Hart, Jon Irabagon, and Bob Belden, and is scheduled for release in Spring 2011. Jerome Jennings’ love and respect for the music is undeniable. His evident skill and sincere appreciation of music and education led Jerome to Ohio State University on a full music scholarship. In 2002 he transferred to Rutgers University to complete his Bachelors Degree. Jerome received his Masters Degree from The Juilliard School, in 2007. During his time at Juilliard, Jerome became the first Jazz Studies recipient of the Morse Fellowship. In the summer of 2006, he participated in the National Educators Workshop and was introduced to the aesthetic philosophy and teaching concepts of Maxine Greene. He began his work as a Morse Fellow in 2006 and fell in love with teaching. Currently, Jerome is keeping extremely busy teaching and performing nationally and internationally. Jerome has performed with Ernestine Anderson, Houston Person, Sonny Rollins, Hank Jones, Paula West, Mike “Philly” Phillips, Slide Hampton, Allan Harris, Little Jackie, Benny Golson, Wynton Marsalis, Gerald Wilson, Tim Reis, Bernard Fowler, Benny Powell, The Mingus Big Band, The Count Basie Orchestra, Sean Jones, Ray Charles, Ronnie Mathews, Curtis Fuller, Johnny O’Neal, and many more. Born in Sendai, Japan to two jazz musicians, Mayuko Katakura seemingly has jazz in her DNA. She began playing piano at age five, and throughout her childhood studied mostly classical music. As she got older, Thelonious Monk became her main influence. While still a student at Sezoku Gakuen Junior College, she was invited to join a band with former Berklee faculty member Bob Zung and alumnus Masakiko Osaka. After graduating, Katakura performed with Seiichi Nakamura, Kazunori Sawada, and many other notable jazz musicians in Japan. In 2003, she came to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music. After graduating, Katakura attended The Juilliard School, where she studied with Kenny Barron, Carl Allen, and Ben Wolfe. In 2006, Katakura won the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Piano Competition and went on to perform at the 2007 Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival. She was also a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk Competition. Currently, Katakura is an active pianist in Japan, and plays with great musicians such as Branford Marsalis and Tineke Postma. She has released two albums on a major Japanese record label, recorded with Carl Allen, Yasushi Nakamura, and Rodney Whitaker.

In 2008, Kisor became one of the four trumpet chairs in the U.S. Navy’s Commodores, the jazz ensemble of the U.S. Navy Band, composed of about 20 of the Navy’s top jazz and big band musicians. Kisor says, “I’m very proud to be representing my country, family, and hometown every time I put on my uniform and see the proud smiles on the faces in the audience when we walk out on stage. It represents something special, bigger than me, which is a good mentality to have when you are about to attempt to create something new.” California native Jennifer Krupa is an active trombonist and composer in the Washington, D.C. area. A member of the United States Navy Band Commodores jazz ensemble since 2004, Jen also performs regularly with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra; Sherrie Maricle and the DIVA Jazz Orchestra; and her own group, JLQ, with saxophonist Leigh Pilzer. L

ocated in the heart of New York City’s Greenwich Village, the Washington Square Hotel was built in 1902 as Greenwich Village was becoming the center of New York’s Bohemian counterculture reflected by the Beat generation who gravitated to the coffee houses and jazz clubs. The hotel became an attractive address for struggling artists, actors, writers and musicians. Ernest Hemingway, Dylan Thomas, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Barbara Streisand, and Bill Cosby are among the celebrities who’ve made their home at the hotel. Until his recent death, Bo Didley was a regular fixture at the hotel. The Washington Square Hotel continues to be an international haven in NYC in partnership with its neighbors in the historic Washington Square, and landmark neighborhood with many historic jazz bars.
