The pop-up restaurant project challenged us to use two 20’ x 8’ shipping containers to design an accessible and inclusive temporary restaurant in Melbourne, Australia.

NAVI is a contemporary restaurant that aims to serve a balanced tasting menu using local ingredients found through aboriginal foraging practices. The concept for the restaurant design is “Life is written into the land itself,” derived from the Australian aboriginal ideology of Dreamtime. This design intends to hone in on the connection between life and land, by exploring form & materiality morphing into the landscape of Melbourne. NAVI’s restaurant story is heavily rooted in embracing the land, and providing an intimate experience in which visitors have the unique opportunity to connect with culture through food and atmosphere.
