Julia Guajardo has an appetite for design, and is eager to collaborate and create meaningful spaces. Originating from Los Angeles, California and completing her studies in the Bay Area, she has a great appreciation for her surroundings and is passionate about exploring new ways to find functionality, while pushing for innovation. Having studied abroad in Italy of 2019, she was inspired by the history of design and wants to celebrate the evolution of architecture wherever she goes. She believes great designs start from conversation, to concept, then develops into forms that best elevate the user experience. Taking a hands on approach, she has developed a stylized craft of lighting, furniture, illustrations, and social spaces with human and Eco friendliness in mind.

Whatever adventure you’re planning, we’re in. From cross-country skiing to stories by the campfire. From morning meetings to sunsets in the park. We’ll bring fuel worthy of the moment: wickedly hot coffee, just-out-of-the-cooler cold beverages or water that stays icy cold for hours. Today is wide open. And we’re up for anything.

For this tenant improvement, I strategically designed a space that would accomodate Hydroflasks outdoor company culture. With that in mind, I created a space that could represent community, activene-ss, and biophilia within the workplace.

Through my study of relationships between materiality, I found that wood, moss, wire, and paper created spaces and forms through minimal binding. My idea derived from how we incorporate nature within work place and how rigid material can be softened by natural elements.

The design development for Senior show started first by analyzing the space where the event would take place. The location was an industrial style building with concrete flooring and brick walls. Given these features, it was best to design a table that can seamlessly fit into the space and also create great surfaces for our work. Citrine derrives from a microscopic image showing cell firbrosis division within the human body. Taking inspiration from the image, I developed a concept that transformed into a light fixture. Materiality of this piece is constructed of recycled paper to mold and shape the pendant, and copper wire at the center which represents the split process. The hue of this lamp comes from the coffee stain that each paper was coated in before application.
To succecfully power the light fixture with minimal cable visibility , I engineered an electrical source which is composed of a T-pipe and two light sockets which are joined together by one singular cord. To enhance the coffee stain, Citrine uses an edison bulb with amber tones.

The Design challenge for Senior Thesis was to create a public third space for an existing historical building in Downtown San Jose. Given the site of the Old County Courthouse, I began to do my research on the history behind the structure. I found that this building holds power and strong value to the community, but is also being underutilized. With a Neo-Cassical Architecture style, and soft pink facade, I wanted to ephasize on these features and understand the reasoning behind them. Knowing that a courthouse has a negative perception, I realized many people will not want to spend their free time there.

The idea of Cool Down Pink is a thesis on how color can calm emotions in highly stressful places. A study done in Switzerland demonstrates that painting jail cells can calm heart rate and lower aggresion. I began my project by taking a simple idea of color, and painting the city of San Jose Pink, curving every corner, and creating a softcity where people can enter and be relieved of everyday encounters.

CH R OMA SE AT PR OJ E C T This final project allowed our entire class to work together to create a seating solution for a small middle school in San Jose. Initially placed in smaller groups, my group and I developed Cascade, a bench system that allowed for the user to interact with the bench in various ways. After careful decision, our group was chosen for the final construction. This design derived from the simplicity and subtly of waves, when applied to the design it allows the user to either lie down, lounge, or sit upright. Cascade came to life with our collaborating design skills and tireless efforts. JuliaGuajardo, Kristine Saelene, Kristen Norona, Marie Andersen, Shelby Sherrick
