WEIR REFUGE
Studio 3 | Fall 2017 | Lori Catalano and Emmanuel Didier | Jane Silverstein Ries Scholarship Award 2018
An urban refuge for wildlife and people that also operates as a flood control system. Weir Refuge began with a modeling study of light and shadow. At the same time, the studio studied the Weir Gulch site in Denver, creating models to analyze the site. I combined my light and shadow models and my analysis models to discover an intervention at Weir Gulch. My design, Weir Refuge, provides a refuge for urban dwellers and migrating birds. It is a place of privacy and safety, a combination difficult to find in the city. Moments of enclosure and moments of expanse are woven together to create intimacy and safety. A stormwater design permeates the site, providing flood control and water quality measures. The water assists in the irrigation of vegetation and will evolve the landform of the site over time.

EVERYDAY CIVIC CENTER
āCognitive Mapā of neighborhoods
Immersive Semester| Fall 2018 | Civic Center, Denver | Joern Langhorst & Leila Toderlund
A plan for reclaiming the streets for people and encouraging the right to the city at Denverās Civic Center. Through walking, pedestrians claim what LeFebrve describes as their āright to the cityā and thus, right to civic society. Mayor Speer said in 1907, āa true civic center should be a focal point to gather up and write converging lines of communication.ā This project aims to fulfill Mayor Speerās wish for Denverās Civic Center. It gives pedestrians the right to the street. Getting people out of cars encourages encounter, inclusion, and communication. Civic Center will become a thoroughfare for everyday pedestrians, everyday protests, and everyday urban life. This project suggests a series of moves to reclaim Civic Center for people from cars. It aims to make Civic Center walkable and woven into Denverās urban pedestrian fabric. Specifically, this project reduces traffic lanes and speed while increasing marked pedestrian crossings, bus lanes, and bike lanes. It provides places to rest and gather, and expands the pedestrian zone connecting 16th St. Mall to Civic Center. It offers design elements with a distinct Denver language to demarcate pedestrian amenities and space. It uses the streets in Civic Center to connect the park, rather than to divide it.
EVERYDAY CIVIC CENTER: ISSUE
Civic Center is divided by arterial roads, causing a dangerous and unpleasant pedestrian experience.

ODE TO DENVER
Ode to Denver collage.
Studio 8 | Spring 2018 | RiNo, Denver | Jesse Clarke, Stream Design
An urban stormwater outfall that also functions as public space and cultural installation. Studio 8 was a condensed, 6 week vertical studio that challenged students to design a stormwater outfall that could support a five-year flood in Denverās River North neighborhood, while also representing innovation in stormwater design. Contextually, the Five Points and Curtis Park neighborhoods near the outfall are some of Denverās oldest neighborhoods, rich with 19th and 20th century history in music, the arts, architecture, and industry. In the 21st century, these neighborhoods consolidated into the rapidly gentrifying River North, or āRiNo,ā neighborhood. The new outfall will support growing Denver and the runoff from new development, in this it represents the infrastructure of growth, yet it also has the opportunity to connect the public to the South Platte River and to the history of Denver. In my design for the outfall, āOde to Denverā is more than working infrastructure, it is a memorial, an installation, and a recognition of Denverās cultural and environmental history.

Plan inspired by 20th century guitar blues, art deco patterns, and industrial form.
ODE TO DENVER: PLAN AND ELEMENTS In the design, water is dissipated through a series of falls, captured by riparian plants, and retained by terraced walls. Grooved granite drops interact with the water, musical instruments play with the site, and the āOde to Denverā collage is painted as a mural, displaying the stormwater infrastructure as art.

Bluegreen, Aspen CO | Internship
An internship at a boutique, community-rooted design firm in Aspen, CO. For the Summer of 2018, I interned with Bluegreen in Aspen, CO. Bluegreen is a landscape architecture and planning firm with strong roots in the Roaring Fork Valley. Recently, Bluegreen founded a build component, called Bluegreen BLD. In this way, and through its focus on contextual, detailed design, Bluegreen is an innovative small design and build firm. I was fortunate to work on a wide range of tasks, such as creating a planting plan, grading a site, setting up sheet sets, building 3D models, rendering graphics, re-designing a busy parking lot, developing the new website, and coordinating with material distributors for design development. The projects were equally diverse, from high-end residential to city grocery store to white water river park. I was especially pleased to expand my knowledge of Rocky Mountain flora, to refine my graphics skills, to gain a broader understanding of construction and maintenance, and to observe the workings of a business.

A research assistant position at the University of Colorado Denver that provides design services to rural Colorado communities. The Colorado for Community Development is a center at UC DenverĆ¢€™s College of Architecture and Planning that partners with the Colorado Division of Local Affairs to provide design services to rural communities. CCCD student workers delivers schematic designs, funding strategies, and implementation tacticts to help communities get their projects off the ground. Since Spring 2017, I have worked for the Western Slope team at CCCD, often in a Project Lead role. With CCCD, I have assisted rural Colorado towns on their design needs from charrette to final report. Often, these towns are struggling economically but have a strong sense of pride and place. Through CCCD, I have gained experience working with rural places and people on design solutions.
