I am Julia Kaltenegger, 23 years old and was born in Leoben, Austria. After finishing the Technical College MĂśdling as an interior designer and carpenter, I graduated from the Graz University of Technology with a Bachelor Degree in Architecture. I continued my master studies in Architecture at the Delft University of Technology as part of the Erasmus+ program and there I discovered my fascination with Dutch traditions in architecture. Due to my interest in parametric design and wanting more experience in this area, I am working currently in the software development firm Xinaps in Delft. My work there mainly focuses on data estimation and assessments for buildings and products. Before I continue my Masters, I‘d like to combine my technical knowledge and its practical application in the planning process in an urban context. Considering my fields of interest and your approaches in the office work, I can see myself as qualified and very interested to gain more experience at your firm. With my application, I am searching for new and exciting surroundings that encourage my thirst for knowledge. SITE The building site is located in one of the most famous industrial districts in Tokyo. The Minato district hosts a large number of embassies, multinational firms as well as stores for daily usage. It becomes evident that a wide range of clothing stores are located in the close surrounding. The Prada store from Herzog & de Meuron or Dior made by SANAA is a brief insight.

CONCEPT Sociability As an essential starting point for the concept, the social aspects of the usage for the whole building complex got considered. The goal is it to connect different social classes with art, music and culture. From a social analytical point of view, there are several questions to mention. Which user groups get involved and how will the premises get utilize? Uses & Activities Throughout a large number of shops, restaurants, and cafes the primary user group is focused on consuming. Additional different possibilities are given by museums, malls and galleries.

A concert hall complex, including restaurant, cafe, bar and lounge areas, offers possibilities to bring connections between the citizens and let them interact with users and actors at the same time. DESIGN In regard to the location, the shape of the site and the culturally required program, the design becomes structured by several functions ordered in differently sized volumes. Two concert halls become evident as the main volumes above all other functionalities. The main concert box, green cube, and the concert box grey are facing straight to each other while being connected by public accessible areas. Additional functionalities like ticket shop, wardrobe, restaurant and bar area are underneath the concert boxes and connected through outdoor paths.

STRUCTURE and FACADE Additional tasks were it to focus on extreme situations in terms of climate, earthquake and acoustic requirements. In order to determine the use of material and their correct dimensions, I decided to use the software grasshopper and karamber. Regarding the calculations, the structural framework was created out of clt beams and columns. For horizontal and vertical stiffness, bracings in form of clt panels filled with concrete were used. Additionally, the facade design is based on a research for gaining energy with PV and algae panels. Due to the sun radiation, the roof became sloped in one direction. The bigger box, facing to the north receives claddings of algae panels, the smaller box, south direction is mainly covered by photovoltaic panels. The total amount of the gained energy can be used for concerts and encourages the inevitable maintenance costs per anno.

mobility hub andreas-hofer-platz graz university of technology academic, bachelor design studio, e4 8th semester, march until july 2016 individual work supervisor . arch. dipl.ing. alexandra stingl-enge stingl-enge@architekturbureau.at CONCEPT The design concept based on multiple aspects of urbanism and environmental usage. Research about creating a mobility centre, office building, exhibition centre and public space is shown in a clear and understandable building shape and position in the urban context. A long stretched building complex, parallell oriented alonge the river. The facade also the connection between in- and outside is made by triangular void forms cropping the volume. Together with wooden panel the verticality in the faรงade becomes emphasized. The floorplan is influenced by the faรงade and structures the room inside.

DESIGN Due to the floor plan structure, different functionalities are located in clusters along the facade. Three main functions are the mobility hub in the ground level, the exhibition area in the underground level and the offices above. The highlight although is the extension from the old city forward to the river pier. An independent landscape realised by a sloped level, thrust diagonally under the building. This connects the water level with the public space in front towards the city. The Level is executed as steps and barrier free ramp. Opportunities to stay are given by cafĂŠs and bistros either in the lower level or close to the exhibition area. The bus terminal is located between the building and the public space and gets included in the infrastructure of the city.

The aim of the project was to design a new building for a music school in Graz, which needed to fit in the narrow space between two existing buildings. We decided to develop an ecologically sensitive design based on a wooden structure, without losing sight of our strong requirements for a design that offers remarkable room for the students as well as for the inhabitants of the penthouse. The sculptural stair in the middle provides an impressive and exciting space – while the rooms inside the building are comfortable and cosy.

DRAUFSICHT
FORM
The project is arranged to upgrade and expand the area KADIKÖY KAPILI ÇARSI in Istanbul. The design process was done using a result from Rhino and Rhino Vault. The structure is made of a screened level at the bottom. Via Vault we were able to form the grid into the height and could calculate which dimension we need to fulfill the static requirements. Beams made of wood are used for the main structure. By steady smaller distances between the beams there are bigger openings used as entrances. For a static support in these fields we used simple bracings. Additionally for weather protection there are pneumatic pads covered by a water resisted membrane.
Next step was designing the detail. For such a form it is necessary to calculate the primary construction with a static program. We took vault for drawing and calculating as well. As a result from the huge differences among the curves, we created a joint connection which is able to absorb pressure and tension as well for lower and higher claimed curves.

A coordinate approach about the project was important to be able to organize from the planning till the realization. At first we got a land, more in the suburban part of the city, whereby we had got the possibility to create application plans adjusted and barrier-free for the user.

We tried to create two main parts of function for this building. The first part is the day care center. This area´s, which should be in the ground floor of the building, is for all kids during the whole day. There, they can play together as well they will be taught in music and overall subjects. The second part is the shared apartment in the second floor. As a result that several clients are older than 40 years and their parents are not able to maintain their kids alone.

CONSTRUCTION We were thinking about the sustainable process of the building. For the main construction we choose materials from renewable resources. Wood as bearing construction, strew as insulation and loam for the inner walls for a better air circulation. Our concern was it to build in the low-cost sector, because of the voluntary material donations also for the manufacture themselves.
