Engel and Engelstueck Learning to fly. Engelstueck means “a piece of an angel”. “Piece” intended as a part of something, but also a theater “piece”. My work starts inside myself. It is a reflection of my internal feeling outside onto a film. The Engel and following Engelstueck I shot in 2008, when I was reflecting about the reality of the unreal in my life. 74 IMAGEINPROGRESS.com
Energy that I feel but I can’t name. People often call me an angel. They say I am energy more than anything else. I say that we are all nothing more than this. It is about conception and understanding of duality in everything. In 2008 I started to shoot myself with the wings. To understand what they see and what I feel. I believe that I can fly.

On my birthday my then lover offered me a pair of huge wings. He had just told me some days before: “I am sorry; I offered you wings, but I know I am peeling off one feather after the other�. Some weeks later I got the material wings and decided to learn to fly. I got a ladder in the studio and started to learn to do it, like birds do. Reach an upper point and jump down opening my wings and trying to get the flow, falling down, touching the ground and then standing up to reach to top of the ladder again. When I shoot my pictures, especially the self-portraits, I prepare a kind of playground.
Some elements that are important for me in that situation and then I just start to perform to myself and shoot whatever happens. In this case the elements were the wings and myself. Also, I felt I would need claws to keep the contact with the earth, in the real sense of it, and in the metaphoric one to connect to the real. They came out long and strong, red, kind of aggressive and glued to my feet. It felt more secure now and painful at the same time when I touched the ground. I thought this is how it has or feel like to be an angel coming down to earth. I covered my body with white color. I often do the IMAGEINPROGRESS.com 75

body-painting in my work/performances. It is a process of getting naked, leaving normality, getting into another world that doesn’t need clothes and then use the color to feel my own dress and prepare for the dance between realities. The trigger-rouge‌ Another element is always there. The trigger I use to shoot. As I always work in film and every time I pull the trigger something of me becomes material. 76 IMAGEINPROGRESS.com
This trigger is like the umbilical cord in my work. You can see it on most pictures. The result of the first session is the pictures from the Engel series. They got framed in perspective wooden frames to give the feeling of looking at something behind a wall. Like a voyeur and seeing the angel jumping around, flying like an insect searching for that light. The constellation is made of 12, and if you look closer you can see more than individual pictures, but a cross and a movement inside.

After some time I looked at what I had done and felt as though the angel was a prisoner. I wanted to let him free. So I took the images and cut them into pieces that, once they are hung up, they look like they are about to explode they are just suspended and waiting to reach each other and the full image again ?! That was when Engelstuck was born. The images were shown at MACO Mexico 2009, where they won “the special mention for emerging artist of the Tequila Award”. In 2010 I met Carlotta
Testori and we decided to show this work also in Italy and dedicated to it a solo exhibition. The images are from this catalogue and you can also see an example of the “wallpaper” and “miniatures” I have been using since 2009 in my shows.

*Julia Johanna Dorothee Krahn was born in Juelich and grew up in Aachen (Germany). To devote herself completely to photography, in 2000 she left medical school at the “Albert Ludwig Universitaet” Freiburg (Germany) and moved to Milan (Italy). Here in 2001 she started her collaboration with the Magrorocca Gallery. In 2003 she inaugurated her first solo shows Schatten and Von Gaensen und Elefanten and started to participate in different group shows between Italy, London, Tokyo; in 2007 she exhibited at the Museum Ludwigforum, Aachen (Germany) and opened her solo show The Creation of Memory at Magrorocca Gallery; in 2008 she was picked as 1st kids- photographer in Italy by Tau Visual association of photography; she has been 78 IMAGEINPROGRESS.com
selected for the participation in the Biennial of Theran (Istanbul); she was invited to exhibit her works as winner to the “Prize de Photography de CCM”, Barcelona, to the “Prize San Fedele”, Milan and at the St.Josef und Fronleichnam’s Church in Aachen, (Germany). In 2009 she won the “Special mention in the Tequila Cuervo Centenario Award for Emerging artist in Zona Maco Art Fair”, Mexico City (Mexico). In 2010 she was present in 2010 At VOLTA6, ART BASEL; exhibited at the Foundation Bevilacqua La Masa in Venice; participated in the group show Mutter at the Kulturzentrum bei den Minoriten in Graz (Austria) and inaugurated her soloshow Ja, Ich Will! Nunc Instantis in Milan in February 2011 she started her collaboration with Carlotta Testori Studio, Milan (Italy); in the same year she participated in Diffraction at Patricia Conde GalerÏa in Mexico City (Mexico) and at Eat Art with IMAF, which took her work from Milan to NY and LA. She was present at Art Verona with Accart and Marrakech Art Fair 2011 with Voicegallery. In 2012 she had a solo show at Accart in Bozen where she was nominated at Kunstart and was beetween the finalist at the Premio Combat 2012 Prize.
