ABOUT US

TED is a global platform devoted to ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’ and TEDx is a locally organized event that focuses on individuals and innovation across the United States and the World. TEDxIIT will introduce some of the community’s most influential and innovative thinkers (you)! TEDxIIT also aims to provide a networking platform for the presenters and audience members. THE networking opportunities are intended to promote the adoption of the ideas, or to facilitate their adaptation and improvement through constructive feedback. TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences -- the TED Conference on the West Coast each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh UK each summer – TED includes the award-winning TED Talks video site, the Open Translation Project and TED Conversations, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize.TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize.

TEDx was created in the spirit of TED's mission, "ideas worth spreading." The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TEDlike experiences at the local level. How popular are these TEDx events? Last month, 162 TEDx events took place in 50 countries! Each event has its own name and its own special identity. From TEDxBroadway to TEDxYouth, they cover a vast sphere of audiences from all around the world. These talks are more than talks. They are where inspiration meets communication.

IIT Mission To create a world-class event which is innovative, mind-opening and attention-grabbing, featuring inspirational and energizing speakers from the IIT community. Vision To inspire the greater community by spreading positive ideas and action to impact the global humanity. TEDxIIT is a student organization that hosts a TED like event on the IIT campus featuring speakers from the IIT community with TED.com partnership. The event is open for the entire global community since 2011. The project takes a great deal of organization, talents and resources. A core committee composed of members from the university, faculty, alumni and students will share the responsibilities. The scope of the project will be determined by this core committee. In 2013, TEDxIIT.com was sold out with more than 30,000 global viewers live streaming. The individuals involved with TEDxIIT have a passion for initiating lasting, positive change at IIT and believe in the power of ideas to change attitudes and lives. The event is open to a live audience of 100 people. Additionally, this event will be streamed live globally; the video will have a permanent digital footprint through the TED.com website, upon approval.

vThe Venue - Tower Auditorium, IIT Main Campus Illinois Institute of Technology is a national, technological, Ph.D.-granting research university, with world-renowned programs in engineering, architecture, the sciences, humanities, psychology, business, law, and design. Founded in 1940 and tracing its roots back to the 1890s with the founding of Armour Institute of Technology and Lewis Institute, IIT brings a focused, interdisciplinary approach to education, including the Interprofessional Projects Program. With five campuses throughout the Chicago area and alumni around the world, IIT pairs the educational and cultural experiences of America's Second City with the small feel of an undergraduate population of just over 2800 and total population of just over 7800.

I I T To w e r i s l o c a t e d on the landmark 120-acre Main Campus of Illinois Institute of Technology(IIT), just four miles south of downtown Chicago. Part of the historic Bronzeville neighborhood, IIT Tower is a 20-story concrete and glass building-- the only mixed-use, high structure of its kind in the area. University Technology Park at IIT and a variety of mixed-use tenants, ranging from social and government agencies to research startup companies, currently occupy the building. Also located within the Tower is IIT Research Institute, which provides non-clinical research and development services to the United States government and sponsors in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and chemical industries.

BACKGROUND

History TEDxIIT was founded by IIT alumna Amy Lee Segami in 2009 shortly after she was invited to speak at the inaugural TEDxPeachtree in Atlanta. Upon returning to Chicago, she proposed the idea to the alumni board and founded TEDxIIT. TEDxIIT is a student organization with the purpose to host a world class TED like event on campus. The inaugural TEDxIIT 2011 Break Through was a great success. TEDxIIT 2012 Gaining Momentum was sold out with more than 1,000 global viewers live streaming. Thanks to the inspiring speakers, attentive audience, devoted committee members, exceptional volunteers and the supportive environment. TEDxIIT now has the permanent digital footprint on the TED.com website.

Benefits TEDxIIT delivers all the goal statements and core values of the Strategic Plan. 1.Spotlight the success of IIT including Alumni, Students, Faculty and Staff members. 2.Generate a sound project to contact the alumni, get their involvement and reconnect with the university. 3.Offer a great leadership and volunteering opportunity to build relationship between alumni, students, faculty and staffs. 4.Install great pride to the IIT community worldwide. 5.Increase the visibility and credibility of IIT to global awareness. 6.Create a buzz in the IIT global community with the pre- and postevent(s). 7.Develop, nurture and rekindle meaningful relationships in the IIT community. 8.Promote interdisciplinary and inter-departmental communications on campus. 9.Long lasting digital footprint on TED website

Details 1.TED.com is about Ideas Worth Spreading. They expanded their brand for multiple TED independent conferences worldwide. Upon approval, the conference is streaming live through their website. 2.IIT offers a range of noted speakers with Ideas Worth Spreading, selected from brilliant faculty members, award-winning alumni to smart and enthusiastic students as well as devoted staff members. 3.IIT could reinvent the wheel and put out a similar conference model like TED.com. The cost and resource would be tremendous. A collaboration with TED.com is more cost effective.

11

Sustainability With YouTube and podcast technology, TEDxIIT leaves significant virtual foot-print. Taking advantage of the social media on linkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, the program will be viewed repeatedly, years into the future. It will be a great recruiting tool to attract new talents to IIT as well as student retention.

Funding The cost will be funded by the project itself. TED.com does not provide any funding. The business model of all TEDx conferences are supported by sponsors and volunteers, generated through the local community. Therefore, here is a great opportunity to reach out and connect the alumni globally and attract corporate sponsors for an event that already has more than a billion viewers and brand recognition. The scale of the conference determines the amount of funds required. As a university, IIT is expected to provide reasonable resources, the venue and staff support, free of charge.

Infinite Impact The theme for 2014 is “Infinite Impact”. This theme is following last year’s “Exponential”. The current theme was chosen because TEDxIIT after making a break through, slowly gaining momentum, and growing exponentially, thanks to the marvelous ideas and supporters from the IIT community and around the world, has become more than just a student organized event, it has impacted our community with ideas that are worth spreading and will continue to do so indefinitely! The theme nicely flows with the objective of TEDxIIT, which is to provide a platform for ideas that are currently or will continue to have an “Infinite Impact” for a positive change. We’ll be addressing issues that will have an infinite impact in the fields of architecture, engineering, business/ entrepreneurship, science, m o v e m e n t s f o r e q u a l i t y, a n d personal development. Infinite Impact is not only the theme for this year, but it also demonstrates the effect of an idea, in its development, after continuously growing, and the impact it has already made in the personal, professional and academic worlds. When an idea reaches exponential growth, it becomes infinite. This year has been especially productive year of building and moving forward and continuing to grow: with support from students of all background and IIT administration; with like-minded community.
