See them play! “When a zoo celebrates International Red Panda Day, most zoos put together a list of activities and enrichment time,” says Sarah Glass, curator of red pandas for Zoo Knoxville in Tennessee. “That may mean more feedings, or they’ll show training sessions or the pandas might get a feeder puzzle to keep them active.” No special events at your zoo? Head to the red panda exhibit as the zoo opens or just before closing, as that’s when the cuties are most active, says Glass. You can also watch the fun at home by checking a webcam like BeardsleyZoo.org/indoor-red-panda-cam.

You know that expressing your thanks to someone can boost your well-being, but it also puts extra pep in their step, say researchers at the University of Central Florida. They had subjects fill out daily surveys at work reporting their energy levels and how appreciated they felt, and found that people felt 17% more energized each time someone showed gratitude for them. “Feeling appreciated sends a signal that you’re positively regarded, and that evokes a sense of vigor—or high energy,” says researcher Maureen Ambrose, Ph.D. “And this increased energy translated to higher levels of optimism, life satisfaction and willingness to help others.”

For your best sandwich yet: You don’t need fancy bread, says chef Eric Greenspan, author of The Great Grilled Cheese Book. “The classics call for the classics: good old-fashioned white bread.” But don’t be afraid to experiment, says Greenspan, who likes swapping ham for salami, using different cheeses (try Gouda, Swiss, Emmental or Comté) and slathering jam on the bread. Says Greenspan, “The key is to cook it on low heat for a longer period of time, which gives it a chance to crisp up.”

“My favorite TV to be my birth mom!” POWER OF LOVE

At age 54, Lisa Wright, who’d been adopted as an infant, decided to do a DNA test to find out more about her heritage…and it revealed shocking news: Her biological mom was a TV star she’d watched her whole life!

“We feel grateful and blessed to have found each other,”says Lisa (right) with her mother, Lynne Moody

A

s her cellphone dinged, Lisa Wright glanced at the screen, and her breath caught. Her DNA results from 23andMe were in. This is it…I’ll finally know about my past, her heart thundered. Clicking on the message, Lisa immediately looked for matched relatives. At the top of the list was the name Carlton Moody, followed by the words: This person is your uncle. Nervous but curious, Lisa messaged him, explaining she’d had her DNA tested. It says I am your niece. Intrigued, Carlton replied and, soon after, the two connected by phone. When she shared her birthdate, Carlton knew Lisa was indeed his niece, the daughter his sister had given up as a teen. “What is my mother’s name?” Lisa asked. “It’s Lynne,” he responded. “Lynne Moody.” The name sounded familiar. So when they hung up, Lisa Googled her name and was stunned. She instantly recognized her—from TV!

A joyous discovery

As a 10-year-old girl, Lisa watched Lynne (far right) on the mid-’70s TV show That’s My Mama. Little did she know, Lynne was her own mama

Adopted at 3 months old in Los Angeles by Naomi and Phillip Wright, Lisa was told early on that she had been adopted. “Your mommy truly loved you but was really young and couldn’t take care of you,” they explained. Grateful for the gift they had been given, the Wrights gave Lisa a loving and happy life. One of her favorite memories was gathering around the TV with the family every Wednesday night to watch their favorite sitcom, That’s My Mama. A character on the show was played by Lynne Moody, and as a little girl, Lisa had always thought she was so pretty. Being adopted, Lisa didn’t look like anyone in her family, and she’d often wonder who she did look like, but she was genuinely happy, so she left the past in the past. Decades rolled by, Lisa built a career as an account executive, became a mother in her early 20s, then raised

Now she gazed in awe at Lynne’s picture on her computer screen, not because her biological mother was a celebrity but because for the first time someone looked like her.

her brother called and told her he’d spoken to her daughter, Lynne sobbed in disbelief and in gratitude. She immediately called Lisa. “I want to see you,” she wept. Learning they lived only minutes apart, they arranged to meet at Lynne’s house the next day. On June 2, 2018, as Lisa’s car rolled into the driveway, it was as if all time just melted away. 3 health benefits of reconnecting with loved ones!

1

Boosts immunity!

In-person visits with family not only jump-start joy by releasing the “feelgood” hormone oxytocin in your brain, but a study published in Psychological Science found that people who often receive hugs from loved ones are significantly less likely to get sick than those who don’t. The reason? Study authors say physical contact and emotional support help ward off potential infection.

2

Slashes stress!

“Interacting with a close social network—especially face-to-face as opposed to digitally—significantly reduces stress, depression and anxiety,” says Dr. Todd Thatcher, D.O. In fact, researchers have found that being physically present with loved ones fosters a stronger feeling of emotional support, which helps dial down levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

3

Increases longevity!

People who have satisfying relationships with family and friends, and see them often, are significantly happier and healthier than those who do not, says an article from Harvard Health Publishing. What’s more, one recent Harvard study found that strong relationships and frequent in-person connections protect against damaging health issues and increase longevity by up to 50%!

Celebrity stylist Samantha Brown suggests adding pops of color (like a bold bag), contrasting textures (like a leather belt) or playful patterns (like leopardprint shoes). “This ensures the neutral fabric won’t come off looking dull.”

The thin fabric is prone to wrinkling, so Brown advises toting a DIY spray to keep it pressed on the go. To do: Mix 1 cup of water, 1 tsp. of fabric softener and 1 tsp. of rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle; spritz on creases and tug on fabric to loosen them.

Chambray can skew casual, but it’s easy to take the fabric from day to night by adding an eye-catching piece of jewelry, says Brown. “A glitzy statement necklace or dazzling dangle earrings pair well with any chambray item.”

The surprising way to HEAL EYE SORES To outsmart a stye—a painful bump on the edge of the eyelid—reach for a potato. It may sound like a strange remedy, but spuds contain mildly astringent, antiinflammatory compounds and an enzyme that breaks down oils and dead skin cells that clog eye glands to trigger the growths. Next time you notice the redness and swelling of an impending stye, try this: Heat a potato, then cut it in half. When cooled to a comfortable temperature, wrap half with a thin cloth and place it cut side down on the affected eye for 10 to 15 minutes daily. courtesy of Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D. To receive 3 free Wellness Guides, order her new book, Radical Longevity, at RadicalLongevityBook.com

Remember when you were little and your mom scolded you for wiggling around all the time? Turns out, that wiggling is a good thing! Australian scientists found that folks who broke up prolonged periods of sitting with 3-minute walk breaks every half-hour lowered their blood pressure 10 points. Study authors say sitting makes the heart work harder to move blood out of lower limbs, and brief bouts of moving around are all it takes to counter the effect.

fe e l g r e a t Found! Mood boosters better than meds Cooler fall days just got even more glorious—and you want to have the happy energy to enjoy every minute! Here, delightful ways to perk up

Greet the sun

Peel an orange

Saying good morning to sunshine is twice as effective at lifting your spirits as Prozac, German scientists say. Basking in morning light acts as a natural SSRI, a commonly prescribed medication used to treat blue moods, by triggering the brain to release a flood of feel-good hormones like serotonin. Plus, setting your internal body clock helps hormones stay balanced the rest of the day. Tip: Step outside to enjoy the changing sky as the sun rises or to watch the clouds float by over the treetops. University of Alabama researchers found seeing both land and sky improved folks’ levels of happiness for hours.

Ever notice that eating an orange brightens your mood? There’s good reason, according to a study in Biomedical Journal. Breathing in a compound called d-limonene, which is released when you peel back the skin of an orange, works as well as Valium at releasing calming brain waves, boosting your mood for up to 24 hours. Tip: Inhale the citrus scent through your nose for a count of 4, hold for 8, then exhale for 10. Repeat 5 times. Yale research shows deep breathing calms your autonomic nervous system to quash stress in 60 seconds.

Slice into a hummingbird cake Research published in the journal Nature finds that the pineapple in the comfort-food classic contains sky-high levels of the happiness hormone serotonin and the amino acid tryptophan, which help your body ramp up mood-leveling hormones. The payoff: A slice lifts your spirits just like the popular antidepressant Prozac. Need a quick fix? Blend 1 cup of frozen pineapple into a smoothie, sip and go! —K.E. Kluznik

BEST HERB: Triphala Do you wake up in discomfort? Constipation doubles your risk of sleep-sabotaging abdominal pain since your intestines can spasm as they try to keep stool moving. Triphala, an herbal remedy popular in India, can provide relief by morning and lessen the odds of nighttime cramping by 67% if you take 1,000 mg. at bedtime, Canadian scientists say. It gently stimulates intestinal walls while also calming pain nerves. To try: Now Foods Triphala (iHerb.com).

BEST FOOD: Mangoes

A 20-minute stroll cuts bloat and cramps by 58% and provides complete relief in as little as 1 hour, Chinese scientists say. Moving the large muscles in your hips and thighs stimulates nerves that tell your intestines it’s time to “go”!

Always constipated? Enjoying 1 cup of mango daily can double the number of bowel movements you have each week. So say University of Connecticut scientists, who found that mango’s gallotannins prod your intestines to release GI-regulating hormones.

BEST JUICE: Aloe vera BEST NUTRIENT: If you’re sometimes constipated and other times have diarrhea, it may be IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Research in the Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility suggests that taking 2 Tbs. of aloe vera juice daily cuts constipation risk by up to 59%. Aloe’s gentle laxatives also ease diarrhea-triggering intestinal inflammation.

Magnesium oxide For occasional constipation, try magnesium oxide before bed. A Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility study found this mineral helped GI muscles contract, improving bowel function in 8 hours (results better than OTC laxatives). is contagious! Sharpen memory by joining a knitting circle You may have suspected as much, and now University of Rochester researchers confirm that enjoying your favorite hobbies with pals, say, in a knitting circle or bowling league, really is more satisfying than doing them alone. That’s because the presence of other folks intensifies the experience. A surprising bonus? Joining leisure groups also boosts memory! According to University of Pittsburgh scientists, meeting regularly to enjoy a shared activity prompts the growth of more gray matter in memory-managing areas of the brain (the temporal lobe and orbitofrontal cortex), keeping recall sharp. Tip: Find hobby groups at Meetup.com/topics/hobbies. OR OPEN THE CURTAINS! When learning something new, like how to craft a mum centerpiece, sit by a sunny window and let the light shine in. Bring a neighbor your favorite fall bulbs, join your neighborhood association or share one of your famous apple pies with the new family that moved in next door. For every connection you make with those close to where you live, you’ll lower your risk of heart trouble by 22% and stroke by 15%, a University of Michigan study found. Having strong ties to your community increases feelings of safety, trust and support, which lower heart-harming stress.

Sounds counterintuitive, but regularly socializing with six or more people, say, by hosting a potluck dinner or joining a book club, makes you 43% less likely to develop cold symptoms than socializing with one or two people, Carnegie Mellon scientists say. Interacting with a wide variety of folks exposes you to more types of germs, which acts as exercise for your immune system, making it stronger.

Nutrition guru Tosca Reno’s plan works blood-sugar magic to turn off hunger and melt 49 lbs in 28 days

IT WORKS!

BEFORE

Cures carb If your waist keeps expanding despite your best efforts, “a gentle sugar detox can make all the difference,” insists nutrition expert Tosca Reno, mega-selling author of The Eat-Clean Diet. “There’s sugar in 80% of the food on supermarket shelves. So we may not realize it, but most of us are in the grips of sugar addiction.” Studies show that, like opioid drugs, sugar hijacks the brain’s pleasure center, stoking constant cravings. The average person now consumes 152 pounds of sugar per year, an excess that wreaks havoc on body chemistry and leads to fatigue, rapid bellyfat storage, blocked fat loss and a high risk for many diseases. Yet most diets feed the addiction or do little to soften withdrawal. “I saw the need for a plan that feels good and gets the job done,” says Tosca, who created Strike Sugar 2.0. Women are raving. “They tell me their cravings are gone and they’re vibrating with energy and radiating joy and health.” They also shed up to 12.5 pounds a week!

T

osca’s strategy is simple and soothing: You enjoy 5–6 small sittings a day, each packed with protein, good fat, fiber and antioxidants. These nutrients make meals and snacks exceptionally filling. Plus, you get one every 2–3 hours, “so there’s no hunger, no psychological sense of going without. It keeps you calm and comfortable—and I’ve found that’s the key to success when weaning off sugar,” says Tosca,

After a lifetime of sneaking candy bars and late-night fridge raids, Sandra Mendoza found her go-to diets stopped working. “I was gaining weight, my belly kept getting bigger, my cholesterol and blood sugar kept going up. I felt powerless,” recalls the California grandmother, 57. Then she heard about Tosca’s plan. “I loved that it was working for women with sugar addictions.” She found protein-rich mini meals (her favorite: air-fryer salmon with sautéed veggies) worked wonders. Her belly flattened right away. “I had some cravings on days 9 and 10, but that was it!” After the detox was over, she stuck with the basics. All told, she shed 46 pounds and five jean sizes, and her blood work is in great shape. “For the first time ever, sugar is not controlling me. If you’re looking for freedom, try this plan!”

62, who shed 84 pounds and stumbled onto a new career as she experimented with ways to break her own sugar addiction years ago. If results seem dramatic, here’s why: Scientists say sugar’s impact goes far beyond empty calories. All the sweets and processed carbs we eat gradually damage cells, making it hard for the hormone insulin to get sugar inside of them to be burned for energy. We make more insulin to force the sugar in, but no luck. Our cells, starving for fuel,

healed my anti-inflammatory that reduces the swelling and pain that reflux causes, and helps strengthen the esophageal sphincter. Hopeful, Deb began taking 3 grams a day of Metagenics Glutagenics L-glutamine powder ($62 for a three-month supply; you can also find a variety of L-glutamine powders online starting as low as $10). Deb then set a three-month test period—vowing if this didn’t help, she’d try the medication. But to her joy, the pain, coughing and throat-clearing caused by the reflux dramatically improved in just weeks. As her symptoms abated, she switched to just 1–2 grams per day of the L-glutamine supplement, and after another three months, Deb felt so good that she slowly started adding back in some of her reflux trigger foods. “I had my first glass of wine nine months after giving it up, and it was awesome! ” Deb beamed to a friend. “I was even more excited when I woke up the next day and there was no pain!” Soon after, Deb went for a follow-up endoscopy with a new doctor who said that, remarkably, the test showed no sign of Barrett’s esophagus or precancerous cells. Although neither doctor would acknowledge that she had cured her acid reflux and Barrett’s esophagus with L-glutamine and her diet, Deb says the results speak for themselves. “I don’t get reflux anymore and the damage is healed,” smiles the 58-year-old, who now owns the health coaching business SustainYourLife.com. “I’ll raise a glass of wine to that!” —Cynthia McVey

“Help me enjoy a happier retirement” A new phase in life can be both exciting and scary. Here, experts share how to ensure your next chapter is as fulfilling as it is freeing Retire the ‘r word’ In interviewing scores of retirees, Marilyn Bushey found that most of them had an aversion to the word “retirement.” “Call it your ‘next chapter’ instead, because you’ll likely have more than just one,” she says. “Ask yourself what’s important to you and what brings you ‘aliveness.’” That may mean spending more time with hobbies or doing parttime work, volunteering or taking classes. “This next phase of life brings freedom, but freedom can be overwhelming—just trying to envision the type of ‘retirement’ you want is the first step.” Grab an index card “Jot a few of your resources and challenges on an index card, such as your ‘team,’ mentors or loved ones who’ll help you, as

well as questions like where you want to live and what your time line looks like,” advises Bushey. “Then ask yourself, Does this reflect the balance I want? ” A short plan is concrete yet not overwhelming, signaling to your brain to take action. Ask around The decision a lot of retirees second-guess? “They often say they wish they had thought through where they want to live a bit more,” says expert Robin Ryan. “Many people want to downsize, so as soon as they retire, they move.” But relocating even 45 minutes away can be a huge change. “Consider renting for a year instead of buying right away, and knock on a few doors, asking folks what they think of their community. It pays to put yourself out there to ensure it’s the right fit.”

On your terms Shorten your bucket list “Ask yourself, what are two things you’d regret not doing?” says Ryan. Then give them a clear time line. “Look ahead two or three years. For example, I wrote that in 2023, I want to spend three weeks in Australia.” Giving yourself a deadline makes you accountable to your dreams, she assures. “Women tell me all the time, ‘I wish had done X sooner,’ so get out there and start doing.” Feel ‘time rich’ “So many retirees say, ‘I wonder how I ever had time to work!’ because time slips through their fingers,” reveals Bushey, who advises having two daily routines, anything from walking to praying, to structure your day.

Once you create this backbone, you’ll feel more purposeful with your time. In fact, studies show the happiest retirees have about four hobbies while the least happy have fewer than two. Widen your social circle When folks on the cusp of retirement are asked what they think they’ll miss most, they often say it’s the paycheck. But when asked that question a year after retirement, they say it’s friendships and co-workers, reveals expert Marilyn Watson. “Whether you join a book club or volunteer, it’s important to keep those ties vital because they’ll keep you vital.” Adds Bushey, “Just follow your dreams and keep exploring— you’re free to design your life and make a personal decision about what this chapter will be.”

GOOD TIMES GUIDE Soak up the last weeks of summer with a backyard gathering that’ll bring out everyone’s inner camper. From treats to rustic touches, it’s a sweet way to spend a weekend afternoon!

Wow with a ‘campfire’ spread Make the buffet at your backyard “campout” a standout by showcasing festive treats and woodsy accents, like party pro Laura Russell (MakeLifeLovely.com) did here. For a similar look, set a green cloth atop your table; add a faux turf runner for a grassy look. Top with wood slices, crates and baskets full of treats for a rustic touch. Then, line up berry bins and paper cups filled with Goldfish crackers and gummy worms (“fish bait”). Hint: Create a fun centerpiece by placing an inflatable fire (OrientalTrading.com) on top of a wood stump.

Treat them to a s’mores station A s’mores station makes dessert a breeze! Just line up graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate bars on trays. Then invite guests to toast marshmallows over a grill (or nestle a Sterno can in a fireproof bucket filled with rocks) using metal skewers. For extra fun, include unexpected treats like peanut butter cups or caramel-filled candy bars.

Add style with festive settings Russell furthered the camp-inspired feel with fun place settings! To get a similar look, lay a bandana ($10 for 12, OrientalTrading.com) down and top with a camping-themed paper plate (we like Camco Life Is Better at the Campsite Paper Plates, $5 for 25, Amazon.com). Add on-theme napkins and trinkets.

Handbag chaos solved! Prevent liquid spills

with an eyeglass case There’s nothing worse than having a bottle of hand sanitizer explode all over the inside of your bag. To keep the contents of your handbag dry, stash small bottles inside an eyeglass case. Not only will it keep bottles together and easier to reach for, the hard shell of the case—designed to protect fragile glasses—will prevent them from getting squeezed and splattering the inside of your bag.

Contain gum

in a pill bottle Whether it comes in a little cardboard box or plastic container, gum always seems to find a way to get loose in your bag, which can be especially frustrating if the pieces aren’t individually wrapped and get stuck to the liner. The solution? Look no further than your medicine cabinet! “You can store anything small in old pill bottles, not just medication, and they’re the perfect size to hold a few pieces, or even sticks, of gum,” says organizer Leslie F. Jacobs (LeslieFJacobs.com). “They’re easy to find in your purse, and won’t open on their own, which means your purse will stay sticky-free!”

‘Slim’ your wallet

by going ‘paper-free’ A wallet stuffed to the gills gobbles up a ton of real estate. “Luckily, it’s easy to streamline,” says organizer Mary Cornetta of Sort and Sweet, Inc. Just choose email receipts instead of paper, and use apps to store credit cards, store cards and coupons in your phone.

Corral loose cords

with a binder clip No matter how carefully you wind headphones or phone chargers before stashing them in your bag, they seem to come out tangled in a knot. Thankfully, sidestepping cord chaos is simple with a binder clip or hair clip. “Just roll the cords, then snap a clip on,” suggests Sarah Dunn of Get It Dunn Professional Organizing. The clip secures the cord without eating up valuable bag space.

Keep track of keys

with a shower curtain ring Why do keys always seem to get lost in your tote? Because they’re heavy, which means they tend to fall into the deepest corner, says Jacobs, who advises storing them on the outside of the bag for easy access. Just put a shower curtain ring or carabiner on your bag’s handle, attach keys and you’ll never lose track of them again!

Circle of kindness Readers share little reminders of how much goodness there is in the world “THEIR GENEROSITY DEEPLY TOUCHED MY HEART!” I do tours at a local historic spot, and after a busy Saturday with a very large group, I was invited to share a meal at a nearby restaurant with a couple from the tour. Sitting right behind our table was another group from the same tour. We exchanged greetings. After our delicious meal, our waitress brought the bill, and imagine our shock when she told us that the group sitting behind us had paid for each of our meals! I was stunned and speechless. Their generosity and kindness deeply touched my heart. What an amazing gift of appreciation. —Toby Smith, N. Charleston, SC

“IT FEELS GREAT TO HELP!” Recently, a young single mom of three at church asked me if I had a good recipe for cutout cookies she could make for her kids to decorate as an activity. As I got out the recipe, I thought of her working full-time as a nurse and making these, and a thought came: I am retired, why don’t I just make the cookies instead of just giving her the recipe? I made a batch of about 45, boxed them up, along with some sprinkles for the kids to use to decorate the cookies and sent her a text. I told her the cookies were all made and ready for her to pick up. It saved her precious time with her children, gave them a fun activity and made me feel like I had done something special for her. —Lorraine Ehlers, Gretna, NE “SUCH THOUGHTFUL KIDS!” I am 85 and use a wheelchair when I’m out and about. My daughter and I were shopping at a dollar store. We had just checked out and were preparing to wrestle our way out the door when three kids came running into the store: a girl about 7 and two older boys, maybe 9 and 11. The girl saw us and quickly commanded the boys, “Hey! Hold the door for these folks!” So, the two boys turned right around and held it open for us. What’s more, they seemed to have a great time doing it too. We thanked them over and over. Such thoughtful kids! —Polly Smith, Locke, NY

Taking her cone from “The Crush” with a smile and a thank you, she made her way to a metal table on a patio lit with strands of white bulbs. Torches were lit to keep the last of the summer’s mosquitoes at bay. The park was the place to be for people of all ages, especially in the transition from summer to fall. There were paddleboats for those who wanted to go out on the lake, a paved trail around it for those who preferred to stay on land and a gazebo for weddings and events. In the evening, bands would come to play old love songs. “Mind if I join you?” The Crush’s voice interrupted. She looked up to see his radiant smile fixed on her, something that never failed to turn her mind to mush.

“Eating into those profits, as you noticed.” He stood, having stayed a couple of minutes. “You come here a lot, don’t you…?” A searching look crossed his face. “Ellie,” she answered. He nodded as though he had already known her name. “Well, Ellie, can you come back here Friday night? It’s my last day at the stand, and I may have some special ice cream for one lucky—and beautiful—customer.” Ellie blushed as she nodded her assent. The week passed in a hurry and suddenly, there she was, walking toward the stand. It was busy, but to her surprise, there was no Rich in sight. Disappointment flared but then dissipated when he came around the corner, a cooler in hand and a smile on his face. Ellie’s heart jumped at the sight of it.

He led them to a table a short distance away, yet close enough that they could still hear the band in the gazebo. He opened the cooler, pulling out containers. He handed her one: two scoops of vanilla with sprinkles. “I saw you eyeing a little girl’s sprinkle cone the other day and thought you might like one. If not, I have a bowl without.” She melted before the ice cream could, her belly doing a little shimmy at his thoughtfulness. She took a spoonful. “Mmm,” she closed her eyes for a moment, opening them to find him watching her. Rich touched the corner of his mouth and held out a napkin. “It’s a good sign when you get it on your face.” Ellie laughed and took another bite of ice cream, not sure how to respond. Guys liked to talk about themselves, right? And Rich did, though he asked questions in return. She learned he owned the ice-cream stand, and she told him about her clothing boutique. After a time, they sat quietly, their bowls empty as they listened to the music. “I think we ate into your profits again,” Ellie said as the music ended. “It was worth every penny,” Rich said. Joy settled deep inside Ellie, making her feel like they were the only ones there, like the music had been meant for them alone. “I don’t want this night to end,” Rich admitted, his voice low in honor of the serenity around them. Take a chance, Ellie. “Neither do I.” “Can we do this again? With something a little more substantial than ice cream?” Rich placed his palm up on the table. “I’d like that.” Ellie put her hand in his, her ice-cream crush definitely a chance worth taking. —Marcella Robinson TO ORDER A SUBSCRIPTION TO WOMAN’S WORLD OR FOR HELP WITH A SUBSCRIPTION: 800-216-6981 Woman’s World is published weekly. Today, you can give a kind word or soak up a compliment, say a prayer or be the answer to someone else’s, make a wish or grant one, lend a helping hand or accept one, let joy find you or create some, and have some fun—the possibilities are limitless and so are today’s blessings!

“After 444 days, this pup found his fur-ever home!” The good-natured pit-terrier mix named Max had languished in the shelter for over a year when director Stacie Haynes came up with a plan to find him a new home…and it was paws-itively brilliant!

“W

e’ve let you down, Max, but that’s going to change,” Susquehanna SPCA Executive Director Stacie Haynes promised the 5-year-old pit-terrier mix. Max was the best-behaved rescue at the Cooperstown, New York, shelter. He never barked or growled at the other dogs. He loved his walks and cuddle time with volunteers. And he greeted every potential adopter with a wagging tail. Yet, after 444 days, he was still waiting for his fur-ever family. When a new staffer commented in surprise about his lengthy stay, Stacie’s heart flooded with sadness and guilt. “We have to do something,” she told her staff. “Let’s dress him up—that always gets attention,” one volunteer suggested. That’s when the idea struck. Her first job out of grad school, Stacie had worked with disabled adults. New employees had to spend their first day confined to a wheelchair or blindfolded with a white cane to broaden their perspectives. “What if Max and I switched places for a day,” she proposed. “I’ll sit in his crate, and he can

sit in my office and be acting director.” On the day of the turnabout, Stacie led Max, dressed in a business tie, into her office, where he happily settled in, ready to get to work accepting treats and belly rubs. And he got many. Potential adopters laughed seeing Stacie in the kennel and had to pop in to see Max on the job. But at the end of the day, Max was still a shelter resident. Stacie flooded with disappointment. “We’ll think of something else,” she told Max. But as it turned out, there was no need to. When the TV news aired a story about the swap, it not only caught Moravia, New York, 72-year-old Ed Panus’ attention, Max instantly captured his heart. “He looks just like Buddy,” Ed marveled. Buddy was Ed’s beloved American Bully. The two had been inseparable until the day Buddy had died a year earlier. There was still a huge hole in Ed’s heart—plenty of room for a new best buddy, he decided, and called the shelter.

Max (above) swapped places with his shelter director, Stacie (left)

The minute Max spotted Ed his tail started wagging. “You’re a friendly little guy,” Ed smiled, and outside, when Ed tossed Max’s ball, he dashed after it and dropped it at Ed’s feet. “I think I just found a new best friend,” Ed told Stacie. “It looks like they’ve been together for years,” Stacie told her staff as Ed and Max crossed the parking lot. A week later, Stacie and some of her staff made a rare home visit. They marveled at how Max never left Ed’s side. “We’re a lucky pair of rescues,” Ed grinned. Stacie smiled. “Max is lucky to have found you,” she said. “When they say good things come to those who wait, they must mean dogs too.” —Bill Holton
