Duties & Responsibilities of Quality Assurance Managers Quality assurance managers play an important role in business by ensuring that products meet certain thresholds of acceptableness. They plan direct or coordinate quality assurance programs and formulate quality control policies. They also work to enhance an organization's efficiency and profitableness by reducing waste. Oversee Process One of the challenges you'd face as a quality assurance manager is staying abreast of internal, external and international rules and regulations pertaining to manufacturing, selling and shipping goods. Managers prepare and update quality documentation, basing their processes on a recognized standard like ISO 9000 – Quality Management, published by the international organization for Standardization. Industry-specific manuals and protocols also apply. For example, breweries follow processing specifications of the American Society of Brewing Chemists to produce a high-quality beer. Slight deviations in calibrations of equipment or a malfunctioning ph. the meter will throw everything off.

Lead Teams As a top quality assurance manager, you'd supervise teams of inspectors who perform the detailed assessment of products and their components at completely different stages of production. Managers recruit and train supervisors, and provide them with documented quality standards as guidelines for their regular work. Managers also select quality inspection tools and software to support the inspection team. You’d have the authority to immediately stop the production line if you see product defects or spot safety guards off a conveyor belt.


Train Employees Your duties as a quality assurance manager would also include ensuring that employees working in production are tuned in to quality requirements, quality assurance managers provide training in best practices. They aim to make production employees responsible for managing their own quality standards. to promote a culture of quality, managers run awareness and award programs. When companies develop new products, quality assurance managers work with the product development team to establish quality standards.

Manage Inputs Suppliers of components and materials play a crucial part during a company’s quality process. Quality Assurance manager’s work with suppliers to assist in formulate quality standards for the products. This ensures that incoming components and materials will go with the manufacturer’s quality standards, minimizes the time and price of inspection, and contributes to the quality of the finished product. Any deviations must be detected and immediately corrected. For example, you'd need to intervene if you discover that your supplier of automotive components has been delivering transmissions of lower quality than expected.

Analyze Data Being successful in the role of a quality assurance manager would need you to own skills in quantitative measurement. Quality assurance managers review statistical data from the assembly lines to spot quality issues. They analyze the data and recommend changes to production processes or quality control to eliminate the problem. They also analyze records of product returns to identify specific issues or trends over time. Quality Assurance managers develop and monitor continuous improvement programs, aiming to reduce the number of defects and improve levels of quality. Continuous quality improvement reduces manufacturing costs and improves overall product quality.
