JULIANA BAPTISTA D’ALKIMIN architect
In the course of my bachelor degree in University of São Paulo, I’ve confirmed that architecture and technology is the field that I am definitely involved and passionate about all along. This feeling has only increased along the time and nowadays I have the chance to accomplish this passion by working as a BIM architect in a renowned office in Brazil. In Brazil I had the chance to graduate from the best university of Architecture and Urbanism of the country, the University of São Paulo. During my graduation I obtained a full scholarship to study abroad in Ireland where I studied for one year at University College Dublin. Currently, I am enrolled in a Master’s Degree programme in BIM MANAGEMENT at Universitat de Barcelona. I have worked in several companies and gained experience in different subjects within architecture and construction, currently seeking a new job opportunity in Europe with the ambition to progress in the field and advance in my career.

This Final Thesis project approached the theme “Office and Nature” with the purpose of evidencing the importance of the interaction between nature and work in an office environment in order to restore the natural landscape in São Paulo city centre. Thinking on this relationship, the final developed product in this work was the building of a coworking office in the centre of São Paulo. It was thus proposed a sustainable collaborative work space of high density in the centre of São Paulo which is able to integrate the architectural façade with the landscape, mixing technology with nature, aiming to restore the lost landscape mainly in the metropolitan area and additionally articulating with the environment creating public spaces and permanence places with a free and collective appropriation.

environment The developed project had also the aim of potentializing the creativity and the transference of knowledge among different professionals, acting as a place where people can meet and interact . Therefore , it was sought the creation of collective environment of work and spaces for activities related to the use of startups of the creative industry, aimed at the articulation between researchers and entrepreneurs. The project is inserted in a place with a lack of public spaces and qualified green areas for the appropriation of the community. Thereby, my final thesis work had the ambition of finding solutions for a building that comprises work activities in an environment which is favorable to the innovation and interaction of the professional community contributing to the qualification of the surroundings.
The project proposes a connection between the two streets that give access to the building, General Jardim Street and Major Sertรณrio Street, by doing that seeking to recover the value of the surroundings and rearrange the urban paths. Through this path and the visual permeability it is possible to transpose the urban barriers and reinforce the pedestrian path so that the public spaces have potential to stimulate and reinforce the social interaction.

The volume concept of the building was primarily focus on promoting spaces with open access to the public and also create green areas for leisure, and for thermal and environmental comfort. Therefore, for this to be possible, the building block was elevated to create the permeability of pedestrian flow in addition to introduce vegetation that has direct solar incidence and permeable soil.

green balconies A cobertura seria de acesso livre ao público, se tornando um local de encontros e lazer não só para usuários do edifício mas também para outros profissionais e moradores da região, contendo um bar e restaurante mas também um terraço com espaço de descontração podendo funcionar como um local para trabalho ou lazer. O terraço inclui uma horta comunitária que abasteceria os cafés e restaurante do edifício. Na fachada norte, o brise de madeira se projeta para cima, formando área com pergolado, permitindo a que as vegetações trepadeira se espalhem ao longo da fachada.
structural system A large layer of soil would be required for the green balconies, which would cause a very large load on the structure. Thus it was proposed inverted beams of reinforced concrete, stiffening all the structure sufficiently to withstand the load. As a bracing was used metallic structure subjected to tensile stresses. The main advantage of this structural system is that they can overcome larger spans and withstand a greater amount of weight.

coll aborative workspaces The building counts with collaborative workspaces destined to activities for the use of startups, with environments for interaction and articulation between the researchers and the entrepreneurs, such as auditorium, cafe, meeting rooms, decompression rooms, games rooms and green balconies. Additionally it counts with office shops such as print shop, stationery and wood shop.

The project is a summer residence design in the rural area of the city Itu in SĂŁo Paulo, in a private condominium. The building is currently under construction. The house its designed to be a place to spend the weekends and needed to attend all the basic needs of the family and be able to receive all the family members for holidays gathering. The design of the house was inspired on the Japanese culture and its material because of the family descendants.

The project is a residence in one of the most expensive neighborhood of SĂŁo Paulo. The building is currently under construction, and I am coordinating the project in site. The house it was design for a family with childrens, to accommodate leisure and safety in a urban area. The design of the house was inspired on a Mediterranean aesthetics, to create a refuge in the city.

The project is a summer residence design in the rural area of the city Araçoiaba da Serra in São Paulo, in a private condominium. The building is currently under construction. The house its designed to be a place to spend the weekends and needed to attend all the basic needs of the family and be able to receive all the family members for holidays gathering. The design of the house was inspired on the brazilian modern architecture aesthetic, with powerful material such as concrete and metal alongside natural materials like native wood.

This is a project of a Luxury hotel in Fernando de Noronha, one of the most beautiful of the world. The concept of the project was inspired by the exuberant nature and fauna that is distinct from Fernando de Noronha.The choice of the structural materials and the constructive systems was the result of awareness of sustainability, in addition to aesthetic quality. By result it was chosen a wooden structure and mud walls, that is a traditional construction technique.These materials are considered sustainable because they combine natural and biodegradable elements.

C U LTU R E PLAZA Urban plaza SĂŁo Paulo, Brazil Academic project at University of SĂŁo Paulo 2017 (9th semester) Role in the process: Elaborating all the design concepts ideas and analyses, making sketches, drawings and diagrams. The concept of the project is based in the diversity of appropriation both by the public and by the House of Culture of Butanta which is a place that offer Culture events for the community, such as concerts, workshop, courses, expositions and etcetera. The project aims to restore an empty and degraded backyard turning the space to an area of gathering and leisure open for the public as well as an area that can be used by the House of Culture for shows and events. The guidelines of the projects were inspired by four types of appropriation by its community. Therefore was proposed four main environment on the plaza: a space for concerts and events with a stage which has a direct access o the dressing room; a large field for leisure activities and to conduct recreation activities such as picnics, sports and games; spaces of contemplation and reading with bench under the shade of the trees; at last but not least a ludic space with blocks and sculpture that can be used by children as a playground and by young adults. The paths and walks are guided to the difference of floor pagination and vegetation.

VEGETATION SPECIES
The choice of vegetation species for the project took into account the following criteria: they could not be invasive, they could not have superficial and aggressive roots, they could not be toxic and leave much waste. Thus were proposed besides the existing trees other natives species of tree of the site. For ground covers that are beyond existing shadows, it is proposed differents sun ground covers, to guide the path and to that could endure the heat.

Due to the proximity of the subway that will be inaugurated close to the Culture Plaza it was proposed a bicycle parking so that the community could park their bicycles and take the public transportation to work. The bicycle parking is attached to a large parametric pergola forming a gate that invites the pedestrian to get into the centre of the plaza to the patio where the events and concerts take place.

On the edges of the plaza were proposed trees of medium to large port with dense crowns forming shadows and providing a natural landscape to the sidewalks, while in the centre of the plaza the vegetation will be taller and thinner, forming a large space that allow the solar incidence that will be partially filtered by the trees around. In this way it is possible to pass and stay in a thermally pleasant manner, controlling the thermal intensity for all seasons.

The project has a grandstand of concrete and wood boards that serves as a transposition and integration with the reforest nursery of the site, maintaining a free access from the plaza to the community garden, as well as a place of permanence and a possible place to watch sports and events that may occurs on the field. The plaza will also feature a long concrete and wood board bench that serves as a restraining wall as well as a place of contemplation and relax under the shade of the native trees. As an design concept, the continuous bench is dismembering along the plaza to the grandstand integrating visually the two elements.

It is proposed a ludic playground with different shapes and sizes of blocks and red monochromatic sculptures in order to attract children and young adults encouraging creativity for their uses. A space that can be used by both children and adults in the centre of the plaza surrounded by sitting benches providing a sense of comfort and security.

This project consists of the design concept of a classroom / atelier environment for the University of São Paulo community or other school in need of a temporary space to attend their activities, which should physically enable its function for a maximum of 5 years. This project aimed to investigate affordable materials and maximize the construction methods for future emergency. It was designed in order to provide the arbitrary balance between the emergency criteria (low cost, quick assembly) and the functional criteria considered as primordial for the this project. The project should provide thermal, acoustic and ergonomic comfort for teaching and learning. Thus, the choice of materials and their articulation in the building is based on these precepts.

The implementation was based on in the daily graduation activities of the university, located between the main building and the lab studio. The project anticipate a possible expansion of the modules according to the necessity and demand of the university.

THERMAL COMFORT
The openings of the project was designed to promote thermal comfort and minimize the global warming effects. The openings in the northeas and southwest facades provide cross-ventilation in conjunction with the height difference it promotes ventilation by chimney effect, ensuring good air renewal. Also it can be observed that in the East faรงade has lower incidence of sunlight because of the brise-soleil, promoting ventilation and also helps reduces the heat gain within the building by deflecting sunlight. The brises also allowed a greater use of natural illumination without the presence of glare.

STRUCTURE
The pillars of paper-tube-structured it is light and able to resist stress. It is fixed in the platform structure on the floor supporting the roof. The platform distributes the loads to the ground without the need for foundations that pierce the ground.

STRUCTURAL SYSTEM
The structural system was inspired on Shigeru Ban project that involved the construction of paper-tubestructured temporary classrooms in case of emergency. The structure uses paper tubes, which are cheap, recyclable, reusable, and readily available. The use of these material (paper-tube and wood plywood) makes it possible to overcome large gaps because it is light and able to resist stress. In addition this structure would facilitate the construction because it’s lighter, faster and easier to build than conventional building methods.

This project was a design of a new office space for VMCA, a law firm with a profile in traditional markets and in the digital economy sectors, composed by young professionals. This characteristic guided the aesthetic, in order to blend the tradition of the modern school with the Scandinavian avant-garde ones, originating a personality based on the stripping, transparency and presence of vegetation,which is present in the reception, library and balconies. The office is located in a corporate building in SĂŁo Paulo.

The plan was organized in two main areas: the one of the directors, with private rooms and the other with open plan for the staff, both connected by the entrance in the reception. In this, two green walls were built from each side.
