HISTORY

Zuzana Licko is a type designer, born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia (1961). She graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1984. Zuzana came to the United States as a child and studied architecture, photography, and computer programming and eventually earned a degree in graphic communications.

Zuzana is one one of the cofounders of Emigre Fonts and has designed a variety of typefaces- Mrs Eaves, Modula, Filosofia and Matrix. She started Emigre Fonts with her husband Ruby VanderLans, which became well known for its self-published magazine and type foundry. Experimental type designs created by Licko became a notable characteristic of the magazine. Zuzana challenged the historic Baskerville and began to work on Mrs Eaves in the 1990s. She used a sizable amount of ligatures and aimed to bring this type to both print and screen use. Licko feels that she may be contradicting the intent behind Baskerville but that her goal is to combine the pronounced elements of Baskerville with an intepretation that is not as structured.

“When used in the right circumstance it imparts a very particular feel that sets it clearly apart from many likeminded types. It has an undefined quality that resonates with people. This paradox (imperfect yet pleasing) is perhaps best illustrated by design critic and historian Robin Kinross who has pointed out the limitation of the “loose” spacing that Licko employed, among other things, yet simultaneously designated the Mrs Eaves type specimen with an honorable mention in the 1999 American Center for Design competition. Proof, perhaps, that type is best judged in the context of its usage”

Trips to bookstores are always a treat for us as we find our Mrs Eaves staring out at us from dozens of book covers in the most elegant compositions, each time surprising us with her many talents.”

“In my rendition of this classic typefaces, I have addressed the highly criticized feature of sharp contrast. To a great degree, the critics were wrong; it did not prevent Baskerville from becoming assimilated as a highly legible text face, and in fact, the high contrast between stems and hairlines became quite desirable, as is apparent in typefaces such as Bodoni, which followed in the lineage”
