Hello, I am Juliana I am a Graphic Designer and Illustrator from Colombia based in London and recently graduated from M.Sc. Creative Industries at Birkbeck University of London. I come from an artistic family - my father is a painter and my mother an artisan. I have been attrackted to shapes, colours and textures since very young age which led me to purse Graphic Design at school. My work experience consists of graphic design and illustration of backgrounds and props for animated productions broadcast on TV. I was chosen to work on the first animated feature film done in Colombia (”Lila’s Book”) which sparked my passion for story-telling through images, and where I honed attention to detail.

At first, the work was about illustrating love stories. When I finished Illustrating the first story, I found out I developed my own methodical process to illustrate. It became very important to me to document my learning in a handbook for the benefit of other illustrators. That is the reason why the book has two covers. One cover has the title I Listen to Love Stories (Se escuchan Historias de Amor), which features an illustrated love story that combines the images with drawn typography. The other cover is Handbook of My Illustration Method (Mi Método Para Ilustrar) where I explain step by step how I create each of the

images (”scenes” as I call them). The cover with the shape of a shell and heart is related to listening when puting a shell next to the ears. The illustrated love story happened between Europe, North America and South America. It includes long distance relationship, a teddy bear gift, the autumn and winter in Canada, a German and a Colobian woman. For the Handbook, it is a 9 step guide with indications of how I illustrated the lovestory, online resources and theory of colour. Guidelines, flyers, posters and illustrations for the animated videosgovernment used for informing the officers of the project Governance For Peace which aimed to perpetuate the Peace Treaty in Colombia. In this editorial design and illustrations it was important to inform in concise manner about the civil servant’s work in the territories affected by the by the guerilla conflict. The guidelines were in form of objectives, statistics, concepts, strategies,g o v e r n m e n t training records, and photographies.

Coffee brand / Giosma Made for: Coffee Brand Giosma Café leyenda Technology: Photography, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator Illustration technique: Digital Year: 2018.

This Colombian organic coffee brand was selling their product without a logo or even a name. After I tried the coffee, I proposed the owners to build the brand together. It was necessary since a brand makes a business unique. As this is a family business from a rural area in the mountains, the elements of the brand refer to a green landscape. With rectangles in green tones - two columns resemble the mountains. The name Giosma is derived from the father’s name. He started to grow the coffee on the farm and has been in charge of the organic farming. The slogan Café leyenda or Coffee legend is yellow/gold because it represents the warmth of a family working together to produce a fine organic coffee. As the brand already had some clients, I proposed to gather feedback via Google Forms.

The customers commented on 3 name and logo options. Sells improved 10%, and costumers started buying it for presents when they traveled internationally. In addition, the l abel contained periodically changing recipes and doubled up as a bookmark. For social media posts the brand uses wood, sack and crumpled yellow tones of paper texture as elements for the designs.

Ovo is a soft Serif font inspired by a lettering guide of the 1930’s. It is a typeface of medium contrast, less formal than the classic shapes of Serifs. Josepfin Sans Ligh is elegant but vintage font which creates contrast with Ovo but together they create a harmony.

Guillermina Y Candelario is an animated TV series broadcast in Colombia for the 10 years running. To design the backgrounds and props for the episodes of the 4th and 5th season I needed to understand the pacific and black culture of Colombia. Some of the elements were already pre designed and organised in libraries (which I had to become familiar with) and some of the backgrounds had to be designed from the scratch. The props and backgrounds are designed according to each episode’s theme. In this production, I learnt to deal with challenging deadlines as it was required to illustrate one episode per week.
