Historical shapes and vivid color are coupled with feminine lines, cultivating a unique charm. Custom typography and bold patterns balance richness with a fresh sophistication. The hotel’s name Harika, meaning wonderful will surely deliver such an experience.

I love working with my hands. It started with knitting and sewing, then jewelry and now block prints. Inspiration often comes in tactile form. In this case, it came from this tulip print; the figure/ground contrast, the strong line. It’s also my first block print.

Fortune-telling in the leftover grounds is a time honored tradition of drinking Turkish coffee. Tatli Fali chocolate bars pay homage to that tradition with the infusion of Turkish coffee and other classic flavors, like honey, dates and mint. The name Tatli Fali, meaning sweet fortune, combines Turkish flavors and traditions into a delicious new experience. Guests of the Hotel Harika enjoy individually packaged chocolates as an in-room amenity. Patrons of the Kismet Kafe can purchase their favorite full sized chocolate bars. The traditions of Turkey are also infused into the packaging design with tulip ornamentation and connect to the Hotel Harika brand through pattern and color.

My sister bought me these scissors when I began sewing. I’m fascinated by the construction of things, and their deconstruction as well. Sewing is marvelous because you must deconstruct the materials into unrecognizable pieces only to reconstruct them into a completely new form. I often think about these contrasting ideas, working in parallel.

The La Jolla Playhouse Winter 2012 season showcases three plays by Tennessee Williams, titled Kaleidoscope. Aptly named, the season’s theme represents the broken, illusory worlds where characters tumble about in their nostalgic and poignant but fractured realms. The season theme also speaks to Williams’ extraordinary talent of turning the ordinary object into a symbolic metaphor. The season brochure, tickets, and banners beckon to theatre patrons age 25-40, with color, line and contrast. The bold palette, irregular shapes, and compact logos speak to poetic tensions, as well as the brochure structure which folds in upon itself.

My grandmother used to keep this prism on a bookshelf in her living room. I loved to pick it up and turn it slowly, sure not to miss any shift in color or light. As the kaleidoscope theme emerged, I pictured the fragmented light from the prism; the beautiful spectrum it gave. It now sits on the bookshelf in my living room.

The Mixology Garden is an herb growing kit for the male cocktail aficionado age 25-40. Influenced by the Victorian apothecary, this hand-crafted packaging appeals to the nostalgia of mixology. My grandpa was always working with his hands and so was my dad. Both were excellent woodworkers with many other talents. A few years ago I found out that my great grandpa was a sign maker and that my great uncle once worked in a paper mill. It seems to run in the family.

This book illustrates a poem based on Erikson’s stages of psychological development. Healthy developing humans pass through eight stages, from infancy to adulthood, in which a person confronts and masters new challenges. Through a series of sewing lessons, a mother weaves the knowledge and skills necessary to pass these challenges into the very garments she creates for her daughter, from infant clothes to a wedding dress. Meeting the challenges of her own final developmental stages in the process. Illustrated by a single thread which crescendos into a tighter and tighter stitch, weaving in and out of different textures and materials until it is finally cut. This design was meant to encapsulate the poem’s cadence and emotion.

The invitations express their refined taste with a bit of whimsy and pay tribute to the imaginative nature of the bride and groom. Rich blue and gold colors with interweaving patterns make an elegant statement. The playful script typeface adds charm to create a luxurious, yet cordial design.

By connecting images of marine life with musical instruments, the posters and cd sleeve raise awareness about the event, but also speak to the mission of the aquarium. Using watercolor, texture, and layering techniques each item becomes an art piece to further inspire patron support. The organic nature of the watercolor juxtaposed with fresh, vibrant color connect the viewer to the energy of both music and the ocean.

I do not possess traditional artistic skill. I can't draw or paint. But I love working with my hands. I thought that watercolor might be a forgiving medium. I was wrong. Yet amazing things happen when you give up control. Such was the breakthrough that occurred with this project.
