Hey! I’m Julian and i’m an industrial designer! I’m 27 years old and a native Oslo citizen...
...i completed my masters degree at the Oslo school of Architecture and design in 2013!
I am specialized in product design, but also have experience from other design
fields.
My main interest has been themes concerning sustainability.
I’ve also had an internship at Hareide design, an award winning design consultany.
These are my favorite design tools...

Electrolux Instant cleaning
ELECTROLUX INSTANT CLEANING
First up, a project in collaboration with Electrolux. The traditional vacuum cleaner has followed pretty much the same paradigm for many years, what will be the next generation?
This is the Ergorapido vacuum cleaner. Electrolux asked us to conceptualize what the next generation of “instant cleaning” will be.
When it was picked apart I was suprised by how small the engine was. Apartments in big cities are becoming increasingly more compact. Is it possible to make the vacuum cleaner even more compact as well?
A survey was made researching peoples opinions and habits regarding vacuum cleaning. Fortunately this is something many people can relate to so I got a lot of feedback!
engine
- 52 of 126 had their vacuum cleaner in a visible spot in their appartment - Answering the question “if don’t have a vacuum, why is that the case?” 57.1 % answered the reason was it took to much space. - 32.5 % answered that they only vacuumed 10 minutes on average
The Erograpido was tested to

posssible flaws.
It was hard reaching under the sofa because of the size of the casing.
The cleaner did not fit in the closet
Also the nozzle was to big to reach in thight spots.
...and not really effective near walls and edges,
Placing the vacuum in the charger was also sometimes a little problematic.
I considered three possible directions...
First, a cleaner with a fflexible nozzle that can transform from a regular vacuum to a more precise nozzle to clean edges and thight spots better.
Also it has a base station that automatically empty the dust chamber.
Secondly, a very small cleaner for using in the car or for waiters in restaurants.
Third, a vacuum resembling a broom, made as minimal as possible to save space. This concept was chosen for further work.
I made some full scale iterations to test ergonomics and proportions.
I also made some test models to prototype the ergonomics
Finally a foam model to get a sense of the end concept.

It is charged by hanging it on the wall. Always ready to use!
It was challenging to design something that is potentially a new product archetype, because there is no form references. I chose to use the traditional broom as a metaphor, for imputing the use of the product.
Electrolux wanted something that reflect their brand but at the same time a new target group. The vacuum cleaner is targeted at the businessman with a hectic life, living in a small apartement.
And, off course, the businessman want something to match his Audi!
The engine and batteries are theoretically the same as in the Ergorapido, but in a new

THE EVOLUTION OF STREETLIGHTS
The assignment in this project was to look into a physical product in terms of the concepts of evolution and revolution. Or in other words what we think the shortterm and long term evolution of a certain product will be. Frustrated with poor streetlighting I chose the streetlight as the object of investigation.
There are two main issues with streetlights today: Light pollution and energy use.
LED diodes make it possible to construct lights in new ways with less energy use. The challenge with LED however is heat. Making the casing a big circle increase surface size and ease ventilation which makes the heat disperse more easily.
By bringing the light closer to the ground, light pollution decrease and you get a more even light distribution.
We can sleep better now!
I see this as a vison of the next short-term evolution of the streetlight, The end concept of the fisrt phase is made as realistic as possible using common manufacturing processes like sheet metal and extrusions.
For the second “revolution phase I wanted to take the streetlight one step further and find a way to bring a sense of nature into monotonous places like parking lots.
What if we could replace streetlightswith something more tree-like?
...the “leaves” could generate electricity for the streetlight when they fluctuate in the wind!
This is actually possible with an invention known as “Solar ivy” !
The underside of the “leafs could be reflective, bouncing light downwards to create a shimmering effect on the ground below.
Also, a nice feature of LED lights is the ability to change colors. The streetlights can be programmed be to indicators or to complement the surronding architecture,
The “leafs also feature a photovolataic film on top to collect sunlight and convert it into energy. They can be adjusted to be perpendicular to the angle of the sun for maximum efficiency.
3 SALTO QUICKCHARGING
“Quickcharging is a fast way of charging electric vechicles. By using a power of 50kW this enables people to charge their cars in 15-30 minutes. The project is a collaboration with Salto quickcharge who was in the startup phase of creating a new quickcharge system for public use in Norway and they wanted help with research and concept development.
This is what was currently available in Oslo in 2012 for quickcharging. There is a number of issues to improve upon in the design. Like usabilty, ergonomics, interaction, services, aesthetics, placement and more.
...And the product itself, screen interaction, differentiation in design and the physical context.
By analyzing the user experience I was able to find what was important to make it as smooth as posssible.
Most people have smartphones these days, so an app that guides you through it is a good way to enable this.
It shows you where chargers are, if they are available, how many people are in que and allow you to reserve a spot.
You start the charging process with the Salto app or by using the on-site screen. While charging there is free wireless internet.
Salto
A clearly visible charging indicator show the charging process and allow you to leave the charging station to do other things while still being able to monitor the process at a distance.
There is also a seperate interface available for those that do not own smartphones.
The interface gives you a 3D overview map over the area you’re at, and the available services nearby.
The big charging box, and all other electrical components is put underground. The charger is potentially a very hazardous and needs protection against weather, collision, theft and vandalism. This solves some of these issses.
This leave only the neccasary components available to the user, which is the plug and the interface.
As a bonus, the heat generated by the transformer underground could be used for heating the seats and melting snow at the station.
An important concept was the idea of having a social space at every station, with a series of concrete furniture, like seating, plants and a trashcan to make it a more plesant experience to wait.
Every location could be customized and the concrete is poured on-site from local manufacturers to lower transportation.
The space can include practical activities like car cleaning equipmentand or cellphone chargers, or recreational like infotainment or interacitve games.
The idea behind the design was to make it something with an somewhat iconic shape that could be recognized in the same manner as you recognize a gas station.
...but that also could adapt in more rural sites, like along the norwegian tourist roads.
For my diploma thesis i continiued to work on electric vechicle charging, with focus on how to utilize solar cells to charge directly from the sun. This is actually very feasible, even in Norway!
The day after i presented my diploma, Salto actually coincidentally had their opening of their tentative charging station concept.
It’s called Powerpark and is localized at Skøyen in Oslo.
It’s first of it’s kind charging station with solar cells in Norway.
It also has a nice social space where you can relax while your car is charged.
The station will be up for 6 months as a research project investigating user behavior.
4 The Medema Experience
A siplified controller makes it easier to adjust speed and monitor battery capacity
This project is a systems-oriented approach to a company designing and manufacturing scooters for physically challenged. We looked into services, strategy and product usabilty and brand identiy,
4 The Medema Experience
Improvements - Sporty and adjustable seat - Stronger frame and more robust look - Necklace RFID/USB key replace old key - Storage compartment in front replace basket - More secure controller with wind protection for hands
This project was done in collaboration with Chrisian von Hanno.

A chair made of conrete! Why not? The idea was to fina a simple shape that could allow many different uses. To emphasise it’s strict apperance it was cast in conrete more as a experiment than neccersarily being intended for high volume production.
It’s not good for your back, but it’s really flexible and modular!
6 Chesstube The assignment was to create chess pieces for injection-moulding. The concept is a a portable set of chess, where the pieces can be fastened together.
7 Ilustrations/Visualizations
My core skill is Photoshop visualization and sketching. I enjoy the concept phase of design projects and I believe in the persuation and inspiration of convicing visualizations.

In my internship period i got to work on a variety of different projects. Unfortunately most of these projects are still in the pipeline, which means I can’t show them in my portfolio yet.
The only released project i can show is this graphic/ packaging design for a series of wine products for Unikia which is found in stores at Enklere liv.
