UNIQUE REVEALS Fall 2017 Architecture Studio 105 Professor Kelly Bair Midterm : Vertical Things
The concept of my structure resembles an onion. Each pocket formed by the curved walls are unidentifiable until you enter it. To make the paths to the pockets less direct, fixed doors were added to the walls. They reinforce the idea of having the pockets mostly concealed while also encouraging people to “slip� through to reveal the pocket. Having a surface cutting through the structure at an angle allows people to have a slight preview before entering.

In OMA’s Jussieu Library, circulation throughout the building is key and it is done so using ramps. But what if ramps were replaced with stairs? And what if there was a new method of way-finding within a structure? The use of two different types of staircases does exactly that. The minor stairs have shallow steps and are embedded into the floor slab. They can either funnel you towards the major stairs, encouraging you to progress to the next level of the structure, or lead you to the very edge of the structure. The major stairs are placed inside of the structure’s core while the minor stairs in the floor slabs are placed outside of the core. When a person is outside of the core, they will have a view of the exterior without any interruptions from vertical connections.

Spring 2018 Architecture Studio 106 Professor Grant Gibson Midterm : Constructed Landscapes Assigned a specific urban, suburban, and rural region of Philadelphia, I was tasked to create fabric/axonometric drawings for two distinct slivers within those regions. All seven professors collectively agreed to arrange each set of slivers into a lattice, thus producing intersections. The goal was to focus on the reconstruction of the intersecting landscapes by producing a 50/50 mix.

WOVEN LATTICE PLAN After analyzing the intersecting landscapes and creating different iterations for the 50/50 mixes, I came to realize that roads and trails served as a basis for carving into the other intersecting landscapes. For example, the rural trails served as a basis for carving into the urban grid of Philadelphia, thus introducing diagonal roads. Since the urban and suburban slivers of Philadelphia were lacking in vegetation and greenery, dense forests were spread into those regions.

Spring 2018 Architecture Studio 106 Professor Grant Gibson Final : Quarter Quarter
Branching off the previous project, I was tasked to further develop a specific quadrant of the constructed landscape into a city (quadrant outlined on woven lattice plan drawing). A city as a locus of ideas, aesthetics and experiences, manifested through architecture and landscape. My city is divided into three clusters: a town, productive farm, and woodlands. A high-rise that seems like a “wall” extruded to its extreme stands in between the three clusters. Pockets and tunnels are carved into the high-rise to highlight zones of importance and activity.
