creating moments

studio arch300, sandler time nov - dec 2017 place discovery park program park refuge

1

The project aims to create a moment of refuge, including a place of rest for 4, a contemplative space, an area for food preparation, and a private bathroom, all whilst responding to the meadow site.

By working through concept diagrams, I identified four unique“moments to couple with the 4 different program requirements. These 4 moments -- such as seeing the meadow grass from below-- all focused on indivudal elements distinct to the meadow which, in whole, would allow the user to have a heightened understanding of the site.

Through this model, we were able to look in depth at the sectional qualities of a preexisting building. From identifying the building’s main concept with a parti model (top right) to the actual process of making the over 3 foot wooden model, the process allowed us to develop teamwork, analytical, and model making skills.

a room for a writer studio arch302, dee time february 2018 program a place with several spaces for contemplation to promote writing

9

Like winter fading to spring The frustration leaves Tangents of thought, like rays of sun, join In one bright, warm moment Inspiration becomes clear And pen meets paper Given solely a 25 x 100’ mass, we were to create spaces for a writer to find inspiration for their craft. Starting with a haiku about what the writing process means to me, I then developed a journey for the writer to take. Small slits of light guide the writer as the path becomes narrower and the the elevation higher until finally, as if breaking through a writer’s block, they come to the central stair which leads them to a platform from which there are no boundaries, only the open expanse.

10

The stacked cardboard model shows the mass and force of each element of the block. The photo to the left is taken as if the user is ascending the long space to the left of the central stair. The drama of its abstract nature is evident in the contrast between light and shadow.

coffee in the city

class arch380, congdon time march 2018 place capitol hill, seattle program city park

13

The class, which had a heavy focus on Rhinoceros modeling software, called for a park in the middle of Capitol Hill, for which we could incorporate wacky themes. Being that Seattle is a city known for its coffee, I made the park coffee themed. The periwinkle slide spouts from a small teapot, the base of the monkey bars from teacups and tubes allow children to crawl through giant coffee to-go cups. Even the trash cans resemble coffee cups for an all immersive coffee and tea experience.

14

In a holistic design experience, I created a holding box for my presentation materials. In theory, the box would be used to bring the materials to a crit but also allow for easy pack up if things were to go wrong during presentation -- this idea from hearing a horror story about an architecture crit from an instructor. A slot in the top of the chipboard coffee cup held an 11 x 17 page with the park renderings on it. A small shelf also pulled out of the left side to create a snug spot to store a flash drive with the renderings on it. Finally, a pull down flap on the right side held a small model of the park trash cans. All items were laser cut and made with 2 dot chipboard.

studio time place program

arch300, dee feb - mar 2018 ballard photographer exhibit and studio

To create a space for a photographer’s studio and exhibit, I had to first understand the type of photography that would be produced there. Given a list of different photographers, I chose to study the work of Gregory Crewdson, who delves into creating eerie and haunting scenes from archetypal suburbia (above two photos). I understood his work as portraying the different levels of the meotional being. There are layers to that being and the more personal, the harder to reach. My building would aim to convey the complexity and layers of the emotional self through non-linear circulation, manipulation of transparencey and opacity, and control of light and shadow. The beginnings of the project took place by bridging the site and concept, of which I did by creating my own Crewdson-esque photo using the context of the Ballard site (see right).
