New Surf Clubhouse at Goodrington Torbay Surf Life Saving Club celebrated the opening of its new clubhouse at Goodrington North Beach with a day of beach-based activities. The Torbay Surf Life Saving club was launched in 2011 and in three seasons has trained over 20 surf lifeguards, 1000 junior beach u
quayside with view to bringing the harbour back to life. It also aims to facilitate communication amongst harbour users with a newsletter and through regular meetings. Penguins coming to Torquay Harbour Penguins have been popping up all around Torquay harbour. Living Coasts staff and volunteers have decorated over 50 mini plaster of Paris penguins in a range of dazzling designs, with others created by children and friends. The penguins will be on show in shop windows around the inner harbour, forming a fun free trail to follow. Designs include a punk with a Mohican, Harry Potter, a Wagnerian Valkyrie, several versions of Superman, a ceremonial guardsman complete with bearskin, a peacock

penguin and a Damien Hirst inspired design using 1800 rhinestones. The trail, which is free to enter, runs until Tuesday 30 September and a trail sheet can be picked up from Living Coasts or any of the businesses taking part. Openers... Openers... lifeguards and has an enthusiastic team of volunteers. Its focus is to train club members aged 6 and upwards on beach education, lifesaving rescue and fitness skills. “In Torbay, the sea and coastline is an integral part of most of our lives,” said Brendon Prince, TSLSC Chairman. Courses available include: Nippers (6/7-9yrs), Sharks (10-13yrs), Juniors (+13yrs) plus adult training. Paignton Zoo giraffe named A Rothschild’s giraffe born at Paignton Zoo in January has been named Joanna. The baby giraffe’s new name was the result of a competition amongst visitors who voted for their favourite names. Voting raised nearly £200 for the charity’s conservation work. Six foot Joanna, now three months old, was born to mother Sangha and father Yoda in January. o paigntonzoo.org.uk

In the Smugglers’ Lair... Anita Newcombe meets Adam Cairns and finds out what makes him tick and how he created his exciting all-new Smugglers & Pirates Experience in Brixham.
A
dam Cairns left school with fairly average qualifications, subsequently studying catering at Cheltenham College. He made several successful forays into the world of catering, owning and running tearooms and coffee shops. He first came to Brixham in 2004 and tried to buy a house at Moorings Reach. However, the deal fell through and he ended up buying a property in Shaldon called Hunters Lodge where he traded until 2010. With the English Riviera still on his mind, he came to Brixham for the second time round in 2011 with the idea of looking for sizeable premises where he could set up a business. He finally discovered the perfect spot on the harbourside. Adam tells me, “I’d been looking for a long time. It’s harder than you would think to find a suitable space with a good frontage where you can create something really good.” Adam got the inspiration to create his original

Smugglers’ Story experience from an historic tourist experience in Oxford he had known and loved. He saw how it worked, how it attracted lots of people, how it was fun and most importantly to Adam, how it gave a terrific insight into the past, bringing history alive. Brixham offered many stories of smuggling and piracy from which to draw and Smugglers’ Story was born with the thrilling tales of Jack Rattenbury and his infamous gang of smugglers taking centre stage. Two years on, having learned from his initial experiences and relaunched the brand-new Smugglers and Pirates Experience, he looks back and calls this period of trading ‘Phase 1’. Adam revealed, “We gathered a lot of feedback from visitors; there were lots of good things but it was also sometimes quite painful. We responded to that by designing and installing a completely new attraction, creating a new story and adding much more to the show. We wanted to make sure families were getting really good value.”

Riviera People The show is now double the length and takes the visitor into different scenes, packed with character and intrigue and ending up in the atmospheric new chapel where the adventures of Jack and his shipmates play out. The whole thing is an exciting adventure as you become immersed in the story and start to feel as though the Customs and Excise Men are really chasing you! Planning the new experience has taken a long time, although the build time was just 4 weeks and the attraction was closed during this period, reopening for Easter. To get the job done, Adam called in a team of experts to take the show apart, keeping those elements which had been popular and creating lots of new features. Adam said, “We understood that you can’t do everything yourself.”

I’m much happier when I feel part of something special” The result is the new Smugglers and Pirates Experience plus a brand-new café and gift shop. The Smugglers Retreat serves jaunty ‘Smugglers Breakfasts’ plus meals and snacks all day with wonderful views of the harbour. Adam’s own team worked together to create the story using real historic characters then the ideas went over to the team at Circle Creative who looked for actors, carried out filming, produced voice-overs and brought the whole thing alive. The experience takes place within a 3D environment with ships, sails and rowing boats and 3D modeling with green screens was used. This is the same process used in high budget films like Gravity. Once that was done, the project passed over to specialists at Audio Visual South West and Sarner. They installed the whole show into the space, computer programmed and checked it for continuity and quality. A big new element of the show is the introduction of the chapel where visitors can relax in the pews as the story continues. An atmospheric, candlelight effect creates a very realistic scene and is so delightful that you leave on a real high. Adam told me that the idea for the chapel came to him because the Reverend Lyte was key to the whole story. It seems that smuggled goods were often hidden in chapels with the full knowledge of the local clergy. Although Adam’s chapel idea took shape only after the idea of building a ship was rejected as impractical, the stunning new space has created a popular interest that englishrivieramagazine.co.uk

Riviera People has taken Adam by surprise. Requests have been flooding in to hire the space for events and concerts. Folk singer Maggie Duffy is planning a concert there and there have also been requests to hold ghost evenings. I asked Adam how he finds time for a social life with so much going on in his business. He told me that he loves to work seven days a week and had his last holiday in 2005. He says, “I love it so much here that I don’t really want to go on holiday. I’m much happier when I feel part of something special and working with the teams on the new Smugglers and Pirates Experience has been tremendously rewarding.” However, Adam does like to take his dachshund Lulu for walks around the Bay and loves the fact that there are so many beautiful places to go. Breakwater Beach, the coast path and Meadfoot beach in Torquay are favourites. The Smugglers & Pirates Experience really reflects the exciting history of Brixham and I had a great time immersing myself in the shady world of Smugglers, Pirates and Rogues, followed by tea in the Smugglers Retreat.o smugglersandpirates.co.uk

The appointment of The Imperial Hotel’s very first female General Manager is a significant milestone in its illustrious history. Anita Newcombe chats to Gwyn Gibbons.
G
wyn Gibbons is just the sort of person I would have wished to see leading one of the country’s most iconic and traditional hotels. Charming, elegant with a word for all her guests and staff, could Gwyn be bringing back some of the sophistication and glamour of The Imperial’s heady past? Opened in 1866, The Imperial Hotel quickly established itself a hotel of rank and fashion attracting exquisitely dressed visitors who stayed for weeks at a time and wined and dined on delights such as Hors d’Oeuvres Choisis, Barquettes de Caviar and Tortue des Indes aux Xeres. Back in the present, Gwyn and I head to the Britannia Bar for tea as Gwyn explains that times have changed and fewer guests stay for 6 weeks at a stretch (although some still do) and far more visitors come for regular short breaks throughout the year. The hotel is also a family resort, particularly during July and August and special children’s buffets are now popular. Sipping my tea, I ask Gwyn about her background and wait to hear that she went to a hotel management college and worked her way up through all the departments before finally achieving her first General Manager position. Not a bit of it. Gwyn says somewhat surprisingly, “I trained as a computer programmer and took an HND in Business Studies on a block release programme with British Aerospace as I was good at maths.” Gwyn then discovered other skills in her repertoire and moved into hotel sales in a property owned by the health service. Her big break into hotel management came when she was offered her first hotel management role, rather astonishingly going straight in as General Manager of Eastwood Park in the Cotswolds. If this was a big challenge, then Gwyn rose to it in considerable style, increasing its profit dramatically within 18 months. Gwyn reveals, “I had fallen in love with hospitality.”

almena II is a 40-year-old Westerly Centaur that we have kept moored in Brixham Harbour for the last 12 years. She is something of a fixture in Brixham, having been owned by a former fighter pilot we called Cap’n Roger long before we bought her. Ours is a swinging mooring in Brixham outer harbour and this year we had her overwintered on Oxen Cove car park, close to the waterside. This makes it easy to get down and do all those jobs including routine maintenance, cleaning out all the cupboards and lockers,

scrubbing and repainting the hull and so on. All the boats are lifted back into the harbour on the same day April 1st and the previous weekend sees a surge of activity among boat owners, finally getting around to those last-minute jobs. The mooing buoys in the outer harbour are largely empty at this point, with few boats staying in all year, but once Palmena II had been safely dropped in and is back on her mooring, we feel a shakedown cruise is definitely indicated. After an hour reattaching the sails, which had June/July 2014

spent the winter in our attic at home, we set off for a first sail across the Bay. That completed successfully, we decide to plan an Easter sail down the coast. One of the great things about mooring a yacht in Brixham is that you can just potter along the coast, enjoying some of the most picturesque harbours in the country with easy mooring, wonderful walks and welcoming pubs. The Westerly Centaur is 26ft in length and is very dry and comfortable. However, it is not noted for its speed, so we check the tide times to get as much help as possible from the currents and set off for Dartmouth. It is a glorious sail rounding the 200ft cliffs at Berry Head, englishrivieramagazine.co.uk
spotting the guillemots and kittiwakes and proceeding along the coast past St Mary’s Bay and Man Sands with its pretty Coastguard Cottages. We know we are being watched from the NCI Froward Point lookout station as we pass East Blackstone and Mewstone at the same time as we are looking out for seals basking on the rocks. For me the best part of this trip is always entering the River Dart past ‘The Castles,’ Dartmouth Castle on the port side and Kingswear Castle on the starboard side. These present a stunning sight, guarding the entrance to the river. After we negotiate our way past the lower ferry, we find a mooring on one of Dart Harbour’s pontoons. The views in the river are spectacular and it’s a superb June/July 2014

Sailing Photo Essay place to spend the night with a short trip ashore in the tender and supper in the Castle Hotel’s Galleon Bar a welcome prospect. In the morning, after checking the tides and the weather, we set off for Salcombe. The first time we turned right out of Dartmouth towards Salcombe it was a daunting prospect and we still treat the trip around the Skerries and past Start Point and Prawle Point with considerable respect. Today we have a really good sail towards Salcombe with our speed touching 7 knots (assisted by the tide) and soon we see the beautiful headland of Bolt Tail come into view. Salcombe has a sand bar to be crossed that was made famous in Tennyson’s ‘Crossing of the Bar.’ This is not a problem for us as we have a shallow draft of 1 metre, so having dropped the sails we head straight in and find our favourite mooring close to the town and its lovely beaches. A good evening with supper at the Ferry Inn sets us up for the night. We were planning to spend two nights in Salcombe but poor weather is forecast so after a bacon sandwich at Captain Morgan’s we head for home. A great three-day trip, we arrive back feeling completely relaxed. There is a range of good sailing schools on the English Riviera where you can learn to sail and join some sailing trips to see if life on the ocean wave might be for you. One thing is certain, sailing along the South Devon coast from the English Riviera is a wonderful thing to experience at least once. o

Midsummer Flower Festival
Dartmouth Green Partnerships, formerly Dartmouth in Bloom, is organising a Midsummer Flower Festival on Saturday 21 – Sunday 22 June, a delightful new event in the Dartmouth calendar.

ver two days of flowers and fun, Royal Avenue Gardens will host a wide range of familyfriendly, flower-themed activities, displays, competitions and events. Environmental stalls will present information about bats, bees and birds and wildlife, as well as open gardens, local garden celebrity Iris Webb and more. There will be refreshments on sale and a flower fairy and ugly bug fancy dress parade for children, a dog show, plus lots of music and dance. In the Old Market you can buy plants, and flower related products and join workshops on flower arranging and paper flower making. In Townstal there will be a Garden Safari on Sunday 22 June. Anne Swithinbank, well known as a panellist on BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time, will talk about her two-acre garden in East Devon. experience in journalism, radio and TV. Also on the platform will be recently retired former RHS judge, Bob Sweet (who won many gold medals as parks director in Torbay). There will be a full-day Art Master Class on flower painting, for both beginners and improvers, hosted by RHS Gold Medallist Rosie Martin at Townstal Community Hall on Saturday 21 June, at Townstal Community Centre from 10am-4pm. The town will be looking its best ready for the RHS judges on 15 July, with displays on this year’s RHS theme, ‘Growing for Gold for Pollinators’ – celebrating 50 years of Britain in Bloom. The other RHS theme is ‘Poppies’ marking the start of World War I a century ago. The very model of a modern musical society... The Gilbert and Sullivan Society (Torbay Branch) is celebrating its 40th anniversary year and 40th performance. Julian Rees meets president, and life member Ann Partridge.
F
orty-one years ago members from operatic societies around the Bay came together to support and take chorus roles in the production of two Gilbert and Sullivan operas, HMS Pinafore and The Yeoman of the Guard, that were produced by the professional company Gilbert and Sullivan For All. After the shows were successfully staged at the Festival Theatre in Paignton, a group of locals inspired by acclaimed actors and former D’Oyly Carte Opera Company members Thomas Round and Donald Adams, who produced the Festival Theatre shows, decided to form a group that solely performed the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. Shortly afterwards the Torbay Gilbert and Sullivan Club was formed. A ‘Cheese and Wine Concert’ was held at Oldway Mansion in October 1973 to an audience including the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress Mr and Mrs Len Howard. This inaugural performance was shortly followed by the Club’s first annual show on the 5th of February 1974 at the Palace Avenue Theatre in Paignton where they continued until 2002 when the theatre was closed for restoration and refurbishment. Since that time the Society has produced its annual show at the Little Theatre in Torquay. Ann tells me that the society afford themselves a period of just four to five months to rehearse for shows, spending the rest of the year rehearsing for Autumn, Christmas and Spring concerts. Over the years, the society has had much media coverage with the highlight being its appearance on the BBC’s Record Breakers with the late Roy Castle. After a chance remark at a committee meeting that the Society should attempt to sing the entire canon of 13 Savoy operas in chronological order and without a break, planning got under way and the advice of the Guinness Book of Records was sought. At 6am on a Saturday morning in March 1978, at the Palace Avenue Theatre, the group embarked on a marathon performance that involved more than 50

Society singers, choristers from Oxford and Surrey Universities, and a small team of pianists and conductors - one of whom managed a 14 ½ hour stint! All the way from Trial by Jury through to The Grand Duke Ann Partridge onlookers came and went, a BBC camera crew arrived and members of the local press dropped in. After 16 ½ hours the task was complete and the Society had sung their way in to the Guinness Book of Records, a few hardy members even managed to stay on stage all day, except for brief calls of nature! Over the following weeks, members were invited to appear on the local TSW television news and a group travelled to London to sing a medley of songs from all thirteen operas in full costume that was broadcast on the Record Breakers television programme. The Society gained further national attention whilst celebrating the 100th anniversay of the Pirates of Penzance, which was originally performed at the Royal Bijou Theatre in Hyde Road, Paignton - in a building more recently noted for housing Woolworths and that now sports a blue plaque that celebrates the event. The original performance, the first in any country, was carried out in great haste by members of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company who happened to be appearing at the Lyceum Theatre in Torquay’s Abbey Road, to secure copyright and prevent unauthorised performances in the United States. The Society performed the show, one of the last at the Bijou, in 1979 before an audience some of whom had travelled from the USA to mark the occasion. For its 40th year, the Society will be performing Cox and Box and HMS Pinafore as it did in its first year. HMS Pinafore being one of the more popular operas, has had several airings during the last 40 years but has never been repeated alongside Cox and Box which was englishrivieramagazine.co.uk

Sullivan’s first successful comic opera written five years before his partnership with Gilbert began. The show, at the Little Theatre in Torquay, runs from Monday 7 to Saturday 12 July. As well as performing full operas, the Society holds regular concerts, many in aid of local charities, in a variety of venues around the English Riviera and South Devon. They have performed at the National Trust’s Coleton Fishacre house and Compton Castle, town and village halls near and far to spread the word and most memorably for Ann, at Exeter Prison and Hawkmoor Mental Hospital. Both events received raucous receptions and even some audience participation, despite the fact the Exeter Prison warders had been expecting seventies rock singer Gilbert O’Sullivan and his band rather than the society and their pianist! The Society has a strong following in the Bay and still fills the Little Theatre every year with performances that quite often have a twist to the traditional comic plots. The society meets regularly at 7.30pm on Monday evenings at Collaton St Mary Primary School and new members are always welcome. As the society was founded to appreciate the works of Gilbert and Sullivan it welcomes non-singing members too, only a love of the works is required. ive minutes drive from Brixham lies some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in the South West, if not the country. These stunning views are well worth the considerable effort that this walk requires and one doesn’t need to feel any shame at taking plenty of extended breathers to admire them! There is a lot of steep terrain so make sure you are equipped with stout walking shoes and plenty to drink on a hot day. There’s much more to see as well as the views including the National Trust’s picturesque Coleton Fishacre, the ruined WWII defences of Brownstone Battery (now a National Coastwatch Institute station) at Inner Froward Point and for the curious, Dartmouth’s Daymark. This circular route has options to extend or shorten If you like a challenge then extend the route by taking the red route to Scabbacombe Head from point one. If it’s a hot day and the hills have got the better of you then either of the yellow routes will take you back to the car park.

by the kissing gate in the right hand corner and take the link path signposted for Ivy Cove to join the South West Coast Path. There are 4 stiles to climb along the way. Breathtaking views start from here along with steep climbs and deep combes! 2 Turn right and follow the South West Coast Path signs in a westerly direction until you come to a gate 30

followed by a stepped descent down toward Pudcombe Cove where you can see the remains of a small sea pool and bathing platform once used by residents of Coleton Fishacre. Unfortunately the cove is no longer accessible due to erosion. Once at the bottom of the descent cross the small footbridge and follow the path to ascend the other side of the combe. There is an entrance to Coleton Fishacre House here - visitor charges apply. 3 Follow the path further westward toward Inner Froward Point and take in the stunning views. The path moves through a wooded section before arriving at Brownstone Battery, the WWII defences that are now an NCI lookout point. 4 From Brownstone Battery follow the coast path westward toward Kingswear through the woods above Newfoundland Cove then over a stile and down the woodland path that leads down steps to Mill Bay Cove. 5 Take the metalled road on the right then left over the stile and follow the steps up from the cove. Follow the signs to Brownstone and take the right hand fork to Home Farm. Then follow the footpath signs up the steep path to the concrete lane at Higher Brownstone Farm. 6 At this point you will see the Daymark, a tower that aids navigation, being the first object mariners sight when crossing the channel for Dartmouth. Detour to the right for 100 yards to access the site and marvel at the substantial stone structure. Follow the lane back up to the metalled road, past the Brownstone car park and entrance to Coleton Fishacre House and return to the Coleton Camp car park. o

Although not a new sport, stand-up paddleboarding is the fastest growing water sport of the moment. Julian Rees has been giving it a go for a couple of years now and tells us why it’s so enjoyable.

As SUP has its origins in surfing then you’ll at some point want to tackle a few waves and because the paddle provides a strong means of propulsion it’s surprising how much fun can be had with quite small waves! Already the sport has diversified and boards come in a variety of shapes and sizes - long narrow boards for racing, short boards for surfing and very buoyant boards for touring. Lengths range from 7 feet to 15 feet. Boards are either solid, constructed from a range of materials or inflatable for those who have storage issues or want to travel with their board. With the variety of SUP opportunities in and around the Bay, a multi-purpose board is the best place to start, length and width being very much dependant on your weight and height. Retailers will often offer taster sessions or you can hire boards at some beaches around the Bay. Above all you’ll want a board that is buoyant enough for your weight, will glide sufficiently to make longer trips a reality and be manoeuvrable enough to tackle the englishrivieramagazine.co.uk
occasional wave. Along with a board you’ll need a paddle, a leash and depending on the length of your watersport season, a wetsuit! Within Tor Bay there’s so much to explore and on a paddleboard you can reach places that other watercraft can’t get to and see deep down through the clear waters. If you ever wondered why Tor Bay is a designated Geopark, take a paddle around the coastline and see for yourself. As well as the Bay, the River Dart offers tranquil opportunities all the way up to Staverton and the Teign is navigable almost to Newton Abbot. That stretching feeling.. A brand-new Pilates studio has opened in Torquay. Anita Newcombe goes along to investigate.
S
outh Devon Pilates can be found right in the heart of Ellacombe in Torquay. Although you can sometimes park in the fascinating little cul de sac next to the studio, it is easy to park in one of the quiet, roads nearby. Once I’ve done this, I stroll over to the beautifully light and airy studio in Alexandra Lane, which it appears, was once a Victorian barn. Owner, Catherine Ogilvy-Stuart meets me for a private lesson so I can try this mysterious physical fitness system I keep hearing about. She tells me that Pilates has become popular with celebrities. Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Hugh Grant and many more are all advocates. Catherine has been teaching Pilates for over 14 years and points out that it is a form of exercise suitable for all ages and abilities. It’s not just ladies either, Catherine has taught Pilates to all-male cricket teams and many other male athletes. Catherine explains that Pilates is a conditioning system that strengthens your body with particular emphasis on
your core and also improves your flexibility, posture and alignment. It uses both machine work and group mat classes; you can choose to do either of these or both. Today, I am having a one-to-one lesson using the machines and after we complete a short health questionnaire, we get started. Catherine tells me, “Many ladies come to me wanting to work on specific areas but it is important to be aware of your whole body and in particular your posture. Lots of people are surprised to learn that many everyday tasks and exercises they are doing may be having a negative impact and correcting these is a priority.” Catherine shows me the first exercise on the machines and we go through a range of lunges, stretches and situps. She sets the resistance levels, monitors everything and adjusts my posture as we go. The Pilates equipment uses springs, which are graded in terms of resistance and they are designed to contract and lengthen the muscles without adding bulk. The exercises are actually quite good

fun and comfortable to do and I am starting to feel I may have become a couple of inches taller in the process as I’m stretching so much. Between repetitions, I manage to ask Catherine about her family and she tells me that she moved to Devon last year and set about looking for a suitable Pilates studio. Catherine and husband Angus discovered the premises in Alexandra Lane quite by accident. It proved to be a great find, located on the first floor of a large Victorian barn (you can still see the big double doors that used to open up to receive deliveries). It was perfect with maple wood floors, although these had to be completely sanded down and re-polished to rid them of their rather harsh shade of orange. The attractive vaulted ceilings needed no work and with the addition of some tasteful lighting and walls repainted white, the studio was soon ready to go. Catherine now runs a choice of classes. Pilates mat work class are usually group sessions with up to 12

people at a time. Kit used includes stretch bands, softly spiky balls and toning rings. Pilates equipment sessions generally have no more than 3 people per session. During my lesson, I also learn the importance of breathing correctly and along with all the machine work and stretching, I am sure that this has helped deliver the wonderfully smooth, silky feeling I’ve gained within my muscles. I leave feeling that I have definitely had a good workout and feel a definite spring in my step. Before leaving, I ask Catherine what she loves to do when she’s not working and she tells me that she spends lots of time with her two children Iona and Kester aged nine and twelve and her husband Angus. Catherine originally trained as a dancer and still loves dancing the Argentine Tango. It has been great fun meeting Catherine and I’m starting to understand why Pilates is such a popular and rapidly growing activity. Why not give it a go? o southdevonpilates.co.uk

illed as the ‘Edinburgh Festival of the South,’ the new festival will bring the best established and emerging talent to the English Riviera. Some of the country’s top comedians will be performing and the week-long festival will be packed with culture, comedy, music, family shows, magic, street theatre, acrobats, jugglers, art exhibitions, dance and more! Headline acts announced so far include: Milton Jones, Lee Nelson, Patrick Monahan and Craig Campbell. The world’s finest comedy pianist Kev Orkian, Royal Variety Show star Steve Rawlings, The Darkside of Pink Floyd and fresh from their own TV series, Shaolin Team UK. There’s fun for the whole family with a themed Flotilla around the Bay, from picturesque Brixham to beautiful Babbacombe with a whole host of entertainment aboard plus outdoor family fun days in Paignton and Torquay, parades, pirates and pop-up shops! The Festival is also the chance for potential stars to be discovered as talented new acts perform alongside the Festival’s headliners. June & July Around the Bay D-Day Weekend 70th Anniversary

A weekend of events and exhibitions will be held at Beacon Quay and Princess Gardens to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. The two concrete slipways at Beacon Quay in Torquay Harbour were constructed for the embarkation of troops for Operation Overlord, the springboard for the Allied invasion of German-occupied Western Europe. The outer harbour slipway at Brixham was also used for this purpose. During the anniversary weekend we will remember the men who gave their lives in the D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy on Tuesday 6 June 1944.

The Royal Dart Yacht Club along with the British Classic Yacht Club is holding an open regatta for classic yachts. A yacht is described as a classic if she is either designed before 1969 or designed to an accepted or replica pattern between 1969 and 1976. Record Breaking Easter Weekend for Kents Cavern Kents Cavern celebrated a record high for visitors on Easter Sunday, some 35% above its previous highest ever numbers and the four-day Easter weekend established a new income record for the prehistoric caves 5th generation owner, Nick Powe said, “On Easter Sunday the weather was on our side of course but we were busy for most of the weekend too. Our café and shop performed particularly well, thanks in part, to more local people dropping in for breakfast or simply a coffee to use our free WiFi. For the last 6 years we’ve been battling an aggressive and, at times, morale-busting recession, so it’s very encouraging to be seeing our efforts paying off. Hanbury’s Tricky Manoeuvre After over 30 years in Babbacombe, award-winning Hanbury’s Fish and Chips has been undergoing a major refurbishment. A brand-new kitchen range has had to be forklifted in through an upstairs window. Previously all the food for both the adjacent takeaway and the restaurant was cooked in the takeaway. However, now all the restaurant food will be cooked upstairs, much of it on the new state-of-the-art Dutch Kiremko frying range. David Hanbury said, ““It was quite a spectacle. It took 15 minutes to get the range from the road into the room. It was quite a tricky manoeuvre to say the least but it’s gone in fantastically well and I’m very excited about the difference it will make to our business.” The restaurant has also been redecorated, with much of the seating being renovated and some being replaced by Lloyd Loom wicker chairs. This is a huge investment for the business and David Hanbury says, “Hanbury’s of Babbacombe is here to stay and this investment proves that.”o hanburys.net
