COMMODORE’S WELCOME It is my pleasure to welcome you to our 2015 club brochure which not only tells you something about our historic past but describes and illustrates what the club offers today. The Royal Torbay Yacht Club has been at the heart of sailing in Torbay for over 150 years and is proud of its long and distinguished heritage. We are one of the leading yacht clubs in the South West with a thriving and growing membership. The club has a strong racing focus, it supports active junior and youth sections. As an RYA Training centre it encourages training and coaching at all levels and through its cruising section, powerboaters and sailors share a common interest. Our splendid clubhouse sitting just above the harbour is home to a busy social programme. The Members Bar, restaurant and terraced garden with panoramic views over Tor Bay are there for all to relax and enjoy. The club has established a well deserved reputation for staging first class World, European and National Championships and we look forward to welcoming class associations in the years ahead. 2015 will see the club playing a significant role in the hosting of the UK stopover of La Solitaire Du Figaro in Torbay. There will be a real buzz around the town, harbour and club during the 5 day stopover June 17th – 21st. Whatever your interest in sailing you will be made very welcome when you visit us.

HISTORY The first record of yacht racing in Torbay is in an advertisement in the Exeter Flying Post of a sailing race for “…boats of not more than 25 feet in the keel and to carry not more than 60 yards of canvas” to be sailed on Monday 11th September 1811. Somewhat later, on 19th August 1863, 23 gentlemen met and resolved to find premises and found a Club which they formalised as a social club (with no mention of sailing as part of the activities of the members) known as The Torbay and South Devon Club Company Limited. The premises they ultimately purchased on Beacon Terrace for the sum of £2500 had been constructed some ten years earlier as a purpose built club house. In 1875, the Torquay Yacht Club was formed in a room in the Queens Hotel with Sir Lawrence Palk as Commodore. The new Club was granted an Admiralty Warrant to fly the defaced Blue Ensign and later in the year, was granted a Royal Warrant, and the Club’s name was changed to the Royal Torquay Yacht Club. Ten years later on 1st January 1885, the Royal Torquay Yacht Club merged with the Torbay and South Devon Club and the name of the combined unit became the Royal Torbay Yacht Club. In the following year, the freehold of the land on which the Club premises stood was purchased for the sum of £650.

Brief History

• In 1886, the Club held its first Regatta over three separate days in June, July and August when the prize money ranged from £4 to £25. Thereafter, it was the practice to hold a Regatta on one day in each year and within two years the prize money had increased substantially to between £40 and £60. • In 1914, the Regatta was abandoned because of the outbreak of war. • A milestone in the Club’s history was reached in 1932 when ladies were admitted to conditional membership with limited access to certain of the Club rooms. • Arrangements were made to hold the America’s Cup trials in the Bay in 1934 and in 1935, six J Class yachts were racing in Torbay but with the death of HM King George V in 1936, J Class racing came virtually to an end. • In 1937, an International Coronation Regatta was held with an entry list of 292 yachts including six 12 metres, eight 6 metres and 15 yachts over 75 tons. • During the Second World War, the Club suffered many difficulties including bomb damage. Urgent repairs had to be carried out in 1944 on the billiard room ceiling which

had become dangerous. More seriously, because of the war, in 1945 and 1946 whisky was rationed in the Club with members being restricted to two single or one double per day with no whisky being served on Tuesdays or Fridays! • In 1948, the XIV Olympiad Sailing Races were held in Torbay, the Club subscribing £256 to the expense account and also giving a cocktail party for participants and Committee. • During the 1950s a bar was built (members previously being served by staff in Club rooms), the Festival of Britain Regatta was held, the Club provided a room as an office for the GATT conference and the Duke of Edinburgh Cup

races were sailed in Torbay. • In 1961, the Torquay Corinthian Yacht Club amalgamated with the Royal Torbay Yacht Club and the merged unit then continued to operate under the latter name. This brought with it an increased membership and an additional Flag Officer, a second Rear-Commodore. • The Club was honoured in 1964 to have a crew of members selected to represent Great Britain in the Olympic Games in Tokyo in the International Dragon Class. They finished just outside of the medals in fourth place after lying second for most of the week. • Throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s and to the

modern day the club continued to host many prestigious sailing championships (see more detail elsewhere). • In 1993, it was agreed that the members of Torquay Rowing Club who had been neighbours in the harbourside premises, should also become members of the Club and have continued to be so since. • In 2013 the club was honoured with the presentation of a Blue Plaque by the Torbay Civic Society to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Royal Torbay Yacht Club and the 200th Anniversary of the Torbay Royal Regatta. • In 2015 the club hosts the UK stopover of the prestigious Offshore Single Handed Race La Solitaire du Figaro.

CRUISING The South West coastline of Devon and Cornwall is one of the most popular and beautiful cruising areas in the country. The cruising destinations are varied in both size and character. Falmouth and Plymouth have large deep water harbours and many marinas and anchorages plus numerous interesting destinations further up river. The fascinating ports of Dartmouth and Fowey, the charm of the Yealm and buzz of Salcombe all have great character and offer superb hospitality to the cruising sailor. There are of course numerous other destinations, too many to mention. Teignmouth and Exmouth are close by going east with Lyme Regis and West Bay offering limited facilities. However the longer passage to Portland opens up a whole new cruising area heading up to the Solent and beyond. Whilst for many the sailing focus is still on racing, there are growing numbers of members who look to cruising to fulfil their sailing ambitions. Many yachts already cruise our beautiful coastline and further afield to the Channel Islands, the Scillies and the Normandy and Brittany coastline. We are privileged to live and sail here. Many sailors combine their racing with cruising and social gatherings during weekends away and offshore; these are always great fun. The club has been working hard to encourage cruising as part of its sailing and social programme. The recently formed cruising section is keen to attract both sailing yachts and motor cruisers to join its programme of cruising events. Cruising weekends include trips to the Yealm, Dartmouth, Salcombe and beyond. They are often linked to other events in the area such as the Dartmouth Music and Food Festivals making the visit even more sociable and enjoyable.

CLUB SAILING AND RACING The Royal Torbay Yacht Club offers some of the most extensive, competitive and well managed club racing to be found in the South West. RTYC is a busy and active club with regular sailing for its members from April through to New Year’s Day. From mid-April to mid-September there is racing for every class on Wednesday evenings. It is too dark to race outside of these dates. Racing for Dinghies and Junior Dinghies takes place on Saturday afternoons and IRC Yachts, Cruisers and Sportsboats on Sunday mornings. The Club has its own 33ft committee boat fully equipped to run racing at all levels and in most weathers. Racing is run to suit the individual classes with a variety of courses using predominantly fixed marks and usually from windward starts. There also a facility for starting and finishing from Haldon Pier. We have a wide range of fleets: IRC cruisers, Keelboats, Sportboats, PY Dinghies and Junior Dinghies. There is every opportunity to get out on the water. The club continually looks to expand its existing classes and introduce new developing classes where they complement existing fleets.

16

ROYAL TORBAY YACHT CLUB

In addition to regular club sailing, we organise a number of special races and events during the year, mainly for the cruiser racers. These include weekend races outside the Bay to the Yealm, Salcombe and Dartmouth in conjunction with the South Devon Combined Yacht Clubs. We also run the ever popular Offshore Week, usually in July when the fleet races to the Channel Islands and then to ports in Brittany and Normandy. There are also special day-races such as the Teignmouth Outfall Race. Bill’s Goblet, a pursuit race for all classes including dinghies, takes place in May and the club will continue to support Bart’s Bash, which is expected to become an annual event, in September. The Royal Torbay Yacht Club is the organiser of the 620-mile Yachting Monthly Triangle Race from Torquay to Kinsale in Ireland, toTreguier in Brittany and back to Torquay. This popular two handed race for cruisers takes place over 12 days allowing for two or three days in each stop-over. The race is run every two years and in 2014 celebrated its 30th Anniversary. As well as being a great challenge as an event, there is always a great social atmosphere in port.

JUNIOR AND YOUTH SAILING AND RACING The Royal Torbay Yacht Club welcomes new junior members and their families to experience the fantastic facilities on offer in Torquay. The club is an RYA Training Centre which allows us to follow the RYA syllabus and run internationally recognised sailing courses. The quality of our training is such that we have been awarded not only the higher level of being a Championship Club but also being considered for the pinnacle rating of being the South West RYA High Performance Centre. Over the past few years we have taken Torbay youngsters with little or no sailing experience through the RYA levels on to be part of Team GBR representing the UK at various international events. We have a great selection of modern and classic dinghies, the International Cadet, RS Teras (for the younger sailors from 7 years up) and a fleet of RS Fevas (a two person performance dinghy with an asymmetric spinnaker). The RTYC encourages its junior and youth section to follow the recognised RYA Pathway with some sailors progressing on to the 29er Skiff. Safety is our highest priority with suitably qualified members manning our patrol boats whilst the youngsters are on the water. RTYC has a comprehensive safeguarding system and policies that are regularly reviewed by our experienced safeguarding officer. The RTYC also runs a busy social calendar with lots of fun events for not only the juniors but also the whole family. These include parties, BBQs and other social events both during the summer sailing season and throughout the winter months. Junior membership allows access to the well maintained modern dinghies and training for all levels. The junior members always welcome new sailors and it’s a great fun atmosphere for the children to be involved with and gain important life skills, like teamwork and perseverance. If you would like to come along and see what we do please call 01803 292006 email juniors@rtyc.org Through the Torbay Youth Sailing Trust, we offer a series of courses RYA Stages 1 to 4; these are two day courses every year and take place during April, May, July and August. All children attending these sailing courses become junior members of the RTYC for the year. The RS Feva, RS Tera, RS Quba, the 29er and RS 200 are our main Junior and Youth fleets. We encourage Members to have their own boats, but it is also possible to hire the club boats for training, racing and fun sessions. Many of these fleets have organised squad training sessions

20

which run through the autumn and winter. Royal Torbay Yacht Club are proud of their successes in these Youth & Junior fleets over a number of years. The Junior section of the Club is run by volunteers and we always need parents to get involved as shore based helpers, patrol boat crews or drivers and instructors if qualified. Patrol boat drivers require RYA PB Level 2 and both drivers and their crews need to be Club Members. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have any experience, we always require help with Beach Co-ordinator, Committee Boat Crew and in many other ways and there is always someone around to help and show you what to do. RS Feva A two-person hiking junior boat, providing an exciting and safe introduction to symmetric spinnaker sailing. The RS

Feva has been the fastest growing junior class over the last decade, with a very active Class Association. Many of our Junior Club members participate in the Feva Grand Prix, Nationals and Worlds! The RYA has also recently adopted the Feva as a recognised junior pathway class. There are all kinds of RS Feva sailors, from family sailing and youth of all levels, from beginner to national squad level. RS Fevas can be rented from the club so anyone can have a go. The Feva youth have lots of fun and hang out together when they are not on the water. Come and try out the RS Feva at the fun and taster sailing sessions on Friday evenings; please contact juniors@rtyc.org for further details. The Fevas join in the junior and youth racing on Wednesdays, (launch 17.30, first start 18.15) and Saturdays (first start 14.00 with junior and youth briefing

beforehand). The racing is usually windward/leeward courses. We are also offering coached racing on most Saturdays for those who want to start to race. Through the autumn/winter we run a Club training squad for those who have come through the TYST courses and other local clubs. For the more experienced racing sailors, there is a five weekend winter RS Feva SW Class Squad. To be selected for this squad, the sailors must show that they are committed to racing and can attend all weekends available. The quality of coaching is very high and many successful national sailors have trained in this squad. Cadet From beginner to aspiring Olympian, the Cadet Class is the world’s most successful two person training dinghy specifically designed for children and young people. Cadet dinghies have a great heritage and there are many squadrons of Cadets based in sailing clubs all over the world. RTYC has supported a successful Cadet fleet for decades, with several teams having been selected for National squads and teams. Cadets race on Wednesday, (launch 17.30, first start 18.15) and Saturday (first start 14.00). Cadets can be rented from the club so anyone can come and sail or come to the fun and taster sailing sessions held on Friday evenings contact juniors@rtyc.org 29er skiff A ‘no-holds-barred’ asymmetric skiff designed along the same sleek lines as its big sister, the 49er. Whilst not a beginner’s boat, the 29er provides sparkling performance at an affordable price for lighter crews, making this an ideal boat for teenagers. It is a recognised RYA youth class, with open and national squad training and an active racing programme. Club members participate in the 29er Class events and several teams have been selected for RYA National Squads. The Club runs autumn and winter 29er training with RYA National coaches which are open to other regional clubs. RS Q’bas Torbay Youth Sailing Trust own a fleet of six Q’bas that are available to rent. They are a great training boat, but can also be raced with just the SportPerfect 5.6m2 sail as a singlehander, or with a jib for crews. We also have brand new Pro Perfect 7.0m2 fully battened racing main sails for each boat, making them great fun for fleet racing if you book them as a group for Wednesday and Saturday Club Racing. POWERBOATS Throughout the history of the Club, Powerboat and Motor Boats have been an integral part of the club and its membership. The club has a long association with the Cowes – Torquay – Cowes Power Boat Race and the Offshore Racing Drivers Association. Today the club regularly hosts and supports Power Boat races in the bay. We welcome everybody who has a genuine interest in powerboating, whether an owner or crew. To this end, we recognise more than half the people going afloat are interested in powercraft and we would like to encourage new members from this sector of the boating world. The Royal Torbay Yacht Club does have increasing membership from the power boat sector and members are encouraged to participate in the growing Cruising Group activities, winter evening lectures and social events based in the clubhouse. VISITING YACHTSMEN & HARBOUR AUTHORITY It is always a pleasure for the club to welcome visiting yachtsmen and we encourage the use of our club’s ample facilities and welcome visitors to participate in our various social, cruising and racing activities. Being in close proximity to Torquay town centre, there is an abundance of accommodation from B&B to four-star luxury, a whole host of restaurants and, for the more adventurous, plenty of nightlife. The Harbour has a large events pontoon and a town dock pontoon to accommodate visiting yachts and a crane situated on the South Pier for boat lifting. There is ample parking, with the Clubhouse just one minute from the car park and two minutes from the dinghy park and yacht berths. If you wish to bring a rally to the club and harbour, then please contact the Club Secretary admin@rtyc.org Torquay Harbour N 50° 27’ 45 W 003° 31’ 73 Tor Bay Harbour has existed since 1970 and it has served the community well by operating successfully, efficiently and economically. Torquay Harbour lies on the north shore of Tor Bay and whilst benefiting from an expanding marine leisure industry, Torquay remains a fully commercial and busy little Devonshire port. The harbour is also on the fringe of the town centre giving easy access to a wide

range of shops, restaurants and bars. Haldon Pier to the south and Princess Pier to the west, form the main breakwaters and give shelter to the enclosed harbour facilities. Haldon Pier is very much a working pier with additional space to accommodate an eclectic range of maritime events. During the summer season, the pier also provides gangway access to over 90 metres of visitor and event pontoons. Haldon Pier is regularly used by visiting yachts, pleasure boats, fishing vessels, HM Craft and other commercial workboats. Beacon Quay provides access to a modern and user friendly slipway, accessible at all states of the tide. The quayside contains shops, cafes and ample space for trailers plus a boat park area. Princess Pier is a popular promenade, with views across Torre Abbey Sands, Corbyn’s Head, Livermead Head, Paignton and beyond. The outer harbour comprises of a 170 berth Town Dock pontoon facility managed by Tor Bay Harbour Authority and a 440-berth Marina, managed by Marina Developments Ltd. Visitor berths are generally available throughout the year. The inner harbour lies behind a cill and bridge, impounding the water at half tide level and is home to 200 moorings for boats up to 9 metres long. Access to the inner harbour is subject to tides, with entry via a bridge/cill which stops the inner harbour from drying out at low water.

TORQUAY ROWING CLUB Torquay Rowing Club is the oldest sporting club in Torbay, founded in 1869. Although boats and equipment have changed dramatically during its long history, the aims of the club remain the same: to foster the sport of amateur rowing and to provide amenities for its members. The original premises were situated under the Marine Spa complex a few yards from the current Boathouse at the end of Beacon Quay. The club has been affiliated to the Royal Torbay Yacht Club since the early 1980s. As a result, all Torquay Rowing Club members are also members of the yacht club and enjoy full use of the facilities it provides. Rowing facilities provided to members include the use

of Fine and Coastal boats for racing and training, rowing machines and other training equipment under the guidance of the Club Captain and the club coaches. Rowing takes place on the sea in a sheltered bay which enables us to use river boats. Members are encouraged to represent Torquay Rowing Club at both Fine Boat and Offshore Rowing regattas in the West of England and further afield. The club also hosts the rowing events of the Torbay Royal Regatta and the coastal rowing Thatcher Rock 8k race. The club isn’t all rowing. Many formal and informal social events are organised throughout the year from barbecues, rounders and bowling nights to the Crab Supper, Club Supper and the finest Christmas event in

Torbay, the Holly Ball. Rowing is a great sport either for recreation or competition. It will provide you with good exercise and fitness throughout the year and a chance to meet new friends from all walks of life. It is a sport that exercises more muscles than any other, and constantly supports the body weight, placing less strain on joints and making it a sport suitable for any age group. To row you need good ‘kinaesthetic co-ordination’ - you know, where your limbs are in relation to your body! This is a much more common skill than good ‘hand to eye co-ordination’ so if you can’t catch, hit or kick a ball then you really want to start thinking about practising your sport sitting down.

Club training is on Thursday evenings at 6:30pm until 8:00pm and Sunday mornings at 10:00am until midday. Most training will be out on the water subject to weather conditions. However, in the winter months training on Thursday evenings will be land training including circuits, weight training, Ergo (rowing machine) and running for general fitness. From time to time, the Club runs a Beginners Course which consists of ten sessions run over seven weeks: • Three session are land based in the Boathouse • Six sessions are on the water in various boats, either sculling or sweep oared • One session will consist of the capsize drill and 50m swimming test in the pool

SOCIAL The Social Life of the Club. The club is not just the home of superb sailing and championships, it is also a social centre for members and visitors at the heart of Torquay Harbour. The Club Bar is open both lunchtimes and evenings and usually there will be at least some members there. Any day or evening of sailing always attracts members to the club. Every Friday the club has its Club Night when members and visitors gather for a chat, drink and nibbles at the club bar, a meal in the restaurant , and to meet up with friends. There are often special discounts for members, monthly prize draws and other entertainments. Special events and sailing championships can help swell the numbers, creating a great atmosphere. Wednesday evenings during the April to September period is Sailing Night. Crews gathering for the après sail activities in the Club bar and restaurant are joined by the race night helpers and friends - another busy atmospheric night at the club. The restaurant is popular with a range of sailing suppers on offer to satisfy the appetites of hungry sailors. During the winter months from October to April Wednesday night is Quiz Night in the club bar. Members gather every week in teams of up to 10 to pit their wits and knowledge against a range of subjects. It is another social occasion and attracts sailors as well as the many club social members. The restaurant is open from 6.30pm prior to the start of the quiz at 8pm. Regatta Time The latter part of August is Regatta time and the club house becomes the centre of significant formal and informal social activity. The Bar and restaurant remains open throughout the day over the 5 day period and the evenings are full of receptions, parties BBQs, prizegivings and other activities to keep the visitors and members entertained. Sailing Championships Most of the championships, whether International, National or Regional, bring visiting sailors, their crews and families to the club and, along with our own Race Team and shoreside helpers, this makes a real party atmosphere. Class Dinners, discos, fun nights and of course prizegivings all help to make the club a lively place.

Christmas and New Year The club stages a number of events over the Christmas period starting with the annual carol evening, a Junior Christmas Party and then focusing on the Annual Christmas Lunch usually the last Sunday before Christmas. This event fills the club and has the Grand Draw and visit of Santa as highlights. To call it a lunch is somewhat misleading . It may commence for lunch around 12.30 but most people are often still there late into the afternoon. Finally the club concludes its year with its New Year’s Eve Party before starting the new year with the annual New Year’s Day Race. Winter Talks During the non sailing period of January to March, the club runs a number of evening talks on sailing and other interests. Rugby Lunches Like many yacht clubs, rugby is popular during the winter. So for the Home Internationals during February each year and other major events, the club runs lunches or dinners with the matches live on our club’s large screen TV. It is a great social occasion too with, as you may expect, a lot of noise, cheering and advice for the referee! Royal Ascot Ladies’ Day Every June the club ladies gather for an extended lunch watching the Ladies’ Day racing at Royal Ascot again on the big TV with a little fun betting on the side. Special Occasions The club also hosts its own special events where members tend to dress up. Prime among these are the Mens’ Dinner, Ladies’ Lunch usually during winter /spring period, the Regatta Cocktail Party in August and Annual Prizegiving in September. Themed dining evenings and Friday night supper clubs all regularly enhance the already busy social life in the club. Occasional Parties Members celebrating special anniversaries or birthdays often run their own parties using our club’s Corinthian Room with its catering and bar facilities. As you can imagine, with the friendship circles that exist in the club, there tends to be many club members involved.
