A cool edition Hockey is such an exciting, fast-paced game. Five players on each team try to score a frozen rubber puck past the opposing team’s goalie. Among the 60 minutes of game time, you will see viscous hits, incredible stick-handling, 5-on4 play, tremendous passes, highway-robbery saves, and highlight reel goals. Oh, and you may see a fight break out. Not to mention the wide open 3-on-3 overtime that is even more fast-paced, followed by a penalty shootout, if the game gets that far. What other sport can say that they feature that much action in just one game? But yet, the NHL gets little coverage on ESPN. And when the NHL begins their season, they are overshadowed by the MLB playoffs and the NFL regular season. Similarly, when the NHL playoffs - which are the best playoffs in sports by far - begin, they are overshadowed by the NBA playoffs and the NFL draft. I would argue that hockey is the greatest compromise of all sports. It features non-stop action with only a few brief

The grueling truth of the ice dancers that have to keep smiling through pain and exhaustion.

BY MARY PILON SOCHI, Russia — Hockey players gnash their teeth. Ski jumpers can hide their fear behind goggles. Speedskaters huff and puff as they round the bend. Such is not the fate of Olympic ice dancers, who must maintain a stoic smile before an audience and a panel of judges, even if a boot fills with blood, a partner sinks a score or a spectator sneers. It is one of the more peculiarly theatrical pursuits of the Winter Games. Part of ice dancers’ success lies in their ability to plaster on calm, relaxed expressions, even as their bodies and brains are undergoing Olympic-level stress. “Actually, it’s funny,” the Canadian ice dancer Mitchell Islam said. “Talking to some of the Olympians we’ve met here, I brag that’s the hard thing about our sport. We’re just as tired as any

edição júlia nunes other endurance athlete gets doing their sport, but we have to look pretty when we’re doing it. It’s a little tougher.” Added his skating partner, Alexandra Paul, “The speedskaters, not a lot.” For Islam and Paul, who performed their free skate Monday, that meant hours analyzing their performance faces in studio mirrors and in video, in addition to on the ice during grueling workouts. “You don’t want to think about how your face looks during the program,” Paul said. “You want it to just be how you feel.” It has made for a curious, perhaps even mildly creepy sight at the practice rink here: Ice dancers in the daylight, some in track jackets and leotards, void of their costumes and stage makeup, smiling at each other in ecstasy as they circle the rink, no audience other than their coaches, no sound other than the crunch of their blades. “That’s what you got to do in practice,” said Nicholas Buckland, a British ice dancer who partners with Penny Coomes. “Then it comes on the ice. You have to even be better in practice so under the nerves and stress it can be a real good performance.” An acting coach helped the Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates perfect their expressions in their free skate. Isabella Tobias and Deividas Stagniunas of Lithuania enlisted the help of a mime for their performance.

“It’s almost our pain reflex now, is to turn that frown upside down. ” For two years, Danielle O’Brien and Gregory Merriman of Australia have taken on clown faces as they perform a free skate to a medley of circus-inspired music. “It’s almost our pain reflex now, is to turn that frown upside down. Really,” Merriman said, sweaty but still clad in his electric green shirt, suspenders and an oversize blue and pink polka-dot tie, undone. But perhaps maintaining a smile on the ice was most difficult for the American siblings Alex and Maia Shibutani. During the “Man in the Mirror” segment of their Michael Jackson program Monday night, Maia Shibutani’s skirt got caught on her brother’s shoulder during a lift, tearing it and calling for some hasty improvisation. They finished their program, smiling, and received a score of 155.17, which put them in ninth place. “We’re just grateful to be here,” Alex Shibutani said, his sister holding back tears and nodding in agreement. “We’re excited to have experienced this together. We’re going to look back in five, 10 years, maybe a week from now, and just really smile.” S

Meet Sohorang, the new mascot for the Winter Olympics 2018 In mythology, the white tiger was viewed as a guardian that helped protect the country and its people. The mascot’s colour also evokes its connection to the snow and ice of winter sports. The name “Soohorang” has a significance. “Sooho,” the Korean word for “protection”, alludes to the protection of athletes, spectators and other Games participants. “Rang” derives from the Korean word “ho-rang-i”, which means “tiger”. “Rang” also appears in “Jeongseon Arirang”, the traditional folk music of Gangwon Province, where PyeongChang is located.

Hockey Figure Skating VS

16 Super Outubro 2017

edição júlia nunes Two of the most popular winter Olympics sports are ice hockey and figure skating. On the face of things, they seem like apples and oranges. Yet both are, essentially, ice skating games. Some people even question whether figure skating should be considered a sport – to my knowledge no one has ever posed that question about hockey. Yet both hockey players and figure skaters must be master ice skaters. Indeed, in smaller towns figure skating and hockey must compete for rink time.

T

So, resolved at least as far as the Olympics are concerned: ice skating is a competitive sport. How does it stack up, though, against the other wildly popular competition, ice hockey?

Outubro 2017 Super 17

STRENGHT Male figure skaters aren’t as buff as hockey players. It would be a hindrance to their sport to be that big, in fact. According to the Boston Globe, a figure skater coming out of a quadruple turn absorbs seven to eight times his body weight in his landing leg. When each pound is going to be multiplied by seven or eight for this important aspect of their performance, they can’t afford to bulk up with muscle. Yet on the flip side figure skaters need to reach upwards of 17 miles per hour and launch themselves in the air with power. They must be able to withstand the forces of gravity trying to pull them awry, then land on that single leg with all that force. They can’t afford to be shrinking violets. For figure skaters, then, the balance between weight and strength is a fine line. The line in hockey is broader. These are big boys playing a rough game – warrior hockey. Their legs must be just as strong as a figure skaters’. While they may rarely reach 17 mph, they must accelerate around and through obstacles. They also jump, though not as gracefully, to avoid linkthose obstacles. 18 Super Outubro 2017

For hockey players, though, there are not as many considerations preventing them from bulking up on top. In fact, they need to regardless of the position they play: They have to hold on to the puck while being manhandled by opponents. They have to check and withstand checks. Goalies must protect their crease, often physically. Occasionally goalies must also beat up the net with their stick, as superstition demands! Yet hockey giants cannot sacrifice agility for strength. Hockey players likely have more overall physical strength, but there may be some figure skaters with stronger skating legs.

SKATES

Now, even though both sports take place on an ice rink, the skates required for both are very different from one another. The two sets of skates can only be interchangeable for very basic beginning moves such as learning to balance, stop and stroke on skates. The design of both skates is different and the toe picks, blades and shape vary greatly between the two sports. Figure skates are longer than the hockey skates of the same size. In figure skating, different balance of weight is required and some moves place more emphasis on weight on the heel whereas other moves place more weight on the toe. In most of the figure skates, blades are directly mounted on the boot and replacement blades can also be added which is not the case for hockey skates. Hockey skates are designed for maximum speed and they fit the skater comfortably. The blades on these skates are usually soldered on and cannot be replaced. Toe picks or notches at the top of the skates are also crucial for figure skates. They are used to perform jumps and spins and hence figure skates are more complex and difficult to master than the ice skates.

Also, an important aspect is that blades vary within the different groups of figure skating and hockey skates. For example, different skates for figure skating can be designed for freestyle, synchronized skating or ice dancing. The blade of freestyle skaters is longer than that for synchronized skating or ice dancing. The tail of the blade is short for these types of skating which prevents the skaters from stepping on each other’s blades by mistake. Ice dancing requires deeper knee bends and for this these skates may also be cut lower in the top. Similarly, skates for hockey players are also designed differently. The skates for forwards are generally lighter which is useful for fast footwork. For defensemen, the skates are stiffer which makes it easier for the players to use their feet to block the puck. The goalkeepers are equipped with lower boots and wider blades enabling them to move around easily from side to side while guarding the net.

Another point of differentiation is the boot composition. Figure skates feature a long slim-fitting boot and they end several inches above the ankle. These skates are made from layers of heavy leather. This is particularly useful for stiff ankle support required to prevent injury during jumps and spins. Hockey boots on the other hand are generally made from a combination of synthetic leather and hard nylon. This type of material makes it easier for the skaters while turning and stopping quickly. It also provides the players with a thicker barrier to protect their feet. Hockey boots also come with cushioned interiors for extra comfort. Outubro 2017 Super 19

20 Super Outubro 2017

AGILITY Figure skaters need great agility. Their competitive routines must include a number of gravity-defying spins and jumps However, though it may not require the same level of agility, hockey players must be agile. They spin and jump, too. No, they are not affecting triple axels or camel spins – usually. Great players, though, must jump to avoid checks. Some of the best dangles in hockey feature players leaping to avoid players. They also spin for the same reason. The difficulty of agility in hockey comes from two aspects of the game. For one, their focus cannot be on their skating. Their focus is on making plays happen that will allow their team to score while preventing the opponents from doing so. Second, they have no routine. They must be able to skate so well that the leaps and turns come naturally in making the play. Actually, another level of agility comes in stick handling. The best players have “soft hands,” meaning they can manipulate the puck with their stick, making it go where they want, how they want it. Then there are goal tenders. I venture they are some of the, if not the, most agile athletes across any sport – gymnastics included. In fact, the best goalies have the flexibility of gymnasts with lightning fast reflexes – all of this with up to 40 lbs of equipment encumbering their bodies!

Outubro 2017 Super 21

22 Super Outubro 2017

COST

ENDURANCE

Equipment is expensive for both figure skaters and hockey players. The skates alone says it all, with hockey players forking over $300 for skates, while their figure skating counterparts paying that just for the blade, with an extra $400 for the boot. Both professionals will change their skates at least once a year after the boot gets too worn.

Both figure skaters and hockey players must have high levels of endurance. Though the actual routine is only four to six minutes, the level of conditioning to get to the competitive level demands endurance. They are also skating the entire time.

Hockey players have a lot of extra equipment; padding can range from 300$1500$+, depending on the brands being purchased. Goalies will pay much more for equipment than any other. Figure skaters spend their extra money on dresses/competition clothes at 150$ + per outfit. At $50 per competition plus the cost of a coach, it too is an expensive sport to play. In Quebec, coaches range from $20 to $100 an hour depending on levels of experience and the level of a coach they are, as well as the level of the athlete.

Hockey players don’t skate for as long at a stretch – most shifts last 45 seconds to one minute. Players are on the ice between 20 to 30 minutes. (Again, goalies are excepted – they are on the ice the entire time, though not always in the thick of the action.) They are very involved minutes, though. In that time they are: Skating Checking Chasing the puck Keeping their eye on whomever is defending them Keeping their eye on whomever they’re supposed to be defending Manipulating a stick Trying not to flail that stick and get a penalty. So, which ice skating game requires more athleticism? Probably hockey. However, while figure skating may look sissy, it most certainly is not. (Well, they whine on the falls, but they do have less padding than hockey players – both in terms of equipment and muscle.) Acknowledged, then, that both are very athletic sports. The question then becomes which has more entertainment value.

GASTRONOMIA

Win and Dine By Katherine Hobson Design Júlia Nunes

You probably think the typical Olympic athlete’s big nutritional concern is eating enough to make it through the day’s workout(s). That’s certainly true for some. Cross-country skiers, particularly women, have a difficult time consuming the 4,000 or 5,000 calories they may need to replace what they’re burning off, says Susie Parker-Simmons, a sports dietitian with the United States Olympic Committee. 24 Super Outubro 2017

But then there’s the Olympic ski jumper.

poor

The physics of that sport dictate that he (a bid to add a women’s event in Vancouver was rejected) be tall (5-11 and up) but weigh in the vicinity of 135 pounds, says Parker-Simmons. And because it’s a power sport, endless hours of fat-burning running is counterproductive athletically— explosive power demands fasttwitch muscle fibers, not the slow-twitch fibers developed by endurance sports. That means caloric restriction, not extra exercise, is the primary means of keeping body weight low. Is it any wonder eating disorders are common? (Authorities actually require a minimum BMI in order to discourage self-starvation and anorexia.) Between these two extremes— the ski jumper Jack Sprat and his wife the cross-country skier— lies an incredible diversity of nutritional needs that depend on the athlete’s sport, gender, competition conditions, and other factors. The starting point for addressing them is no different from the one for civilians. “Athletes do not need a diet substantially different from that recommended in the 2005 Dietary Guidelines” or the Canadian equivalent, says a 2009 position statement on nutrition and athletic performance issued by the American Dietetic Association, Dietitians of Canada, and the American College of Sports Medicine. That means a diet that meets at least the RDA for micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals; doesn’t

“Generally, dietitians will prescribe a certain number of grams of carbs, protein, and fat per kilogram of an athlete’s body weight to match the particular demands of her workout” eliminate or drastically reduce intake of carbohydrates, protein, or fat; and is generally healthful, centered on plenty of fruits and veggies, whole grains, lean protein sources, and “good” fats such as olive oil. From that baseline healthful diet, the tinkering starts. Here are some of the eating considerations faced by the athletes in Vancouver. If you’re particularly active or athletic yourself, some of them may apply to you, too. A sports dietitian can offer advice. Generally, dietitians will prescribe a certain number of grams of carbs, protein, and fat per kilogram of an athlete’s body weight to match the particular demands of her workout—i.e., its length, frequency, and intensity. Nanna Meyer, the nutritionist for United States Speedskating and an assistant professor of health sciences at the University of Colorado–Colorado Springs, says an intense training day for a skater demands about 7 to 10 grams of carbohydrate per kilogram of body weight, at least 1.5 g/kg of protein, and about 1g/kg of fat. (Less intense exercise means fewer carbs—more like 5 to 7 g/kg.) For average folks, Outubro 2017 Super 25

macronutrient recommendations are usually expressed in percentage of daily calories. The acceptable range is 10 to 35 percent protein, 45 to 65 percent carbohydrates, and 20 to 35 percent fat. For a 2,000-calorie diet, that would mean between 50 and 175 grams protein, 225 to 325 grams carbohydrate, and 44 to 78 grams fat per day. To keep calories constant, obviously, the more you have of one nutrient, the less you’ll have of another. While athletes do follow a balanced diet, Meyer tends to recommend a little more protein for sprinters, especially after an exercise session, to help build the muscle that characterizes their physique. Longer-distance competitors often need more carbohydrates for recovery, she says.

26 Super Outubro 2017

Athletes whose sports require a relatively small energy expenditure—like ski jumpers—or who are above their ideal competition weight need to lose pounds without chipping away at the muscle that makes them successful. For a skater attempting to drop a few pounds, Meyer says she will continue to match the carbs to training needs, since that’s the main fuel for performance, but will increase the protein to 2g/kg and reduce fat consumption. She says that combination will protect against losing lean muscle mass as weight declines. And then there are those who can’t take in enough. Women are susceptible because they typically have a smaller appetite than men, says Parker-Simmons, who helps the U.S. ski and snowboarding team with nutrition. And it doesn’t take long for a caloric deficit to result in amenorrhea—a cessation of the menstrual cycle. (Losing your period is not necessarily a function of body fat, says Meyer, but can happen simply from eating 500 or so fewer calories than you need for five days in a row.) For athletes struggling to keep weight on, Meyer says she’ll stick with healthful, good-quality foods but just prescribe more of them to boost calories.

increase dehydration.) Some athletes, particularly women, also need to take in more iron while they’re at high altitudes, but this varies a lot from person to person. (Self-medication is therefore a bad idea; see a nutritionist or physician and get your iron status tested before you use supplements.) The outside temperature isn’t so important if you’re warm on the inside—dressed appropriately, and working out at a level that keeps your core temperature steady. But it can be a factor in some events, like downhill skiing, ski jumping, and snowboarding, where there are blocks of time with no activity— weather delays, chairlift trips, long waits before the start at the top of the mountain. “When you really start shivering, you burn carbs more and your glycogen is depleted,” says Meyer. Since that’s the last thing you want to do before a big event, it’s time to reach for a warm sports drink or hot chocolate.

Traveling to high altitudes to compete or train can wreak its own havoc. The body dehydrates and also needs more energy, since the heart is working harder to pump blood, says Parker-Simmons. Her solution: sports drink, which addresses both issues. (Liquid calories should not be in the form of alcohol, which will only

30 Super Outubro 2017

The story of the Stanley Cup begins in 1892. Lord Stanley of Preston, who at the time was serving as Governor of Canada, purchased a silver bowl measuring 7.5 inches high and 11.5 inches across. This was the first ever official Stanley Cup. The first Stanley Cup championship was held in 1893. The very first winner of the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association hockey club. Thus began the long line of tradition that has today become the most anticipated competition in hockey. In its earliest years the Stanley Cup championship was comprised of amateur hockey teams. However towards the end of the 19th century, professional hockey became much more popular across North America and in 1910 the Stanley Cup would become a prize for professional hockey leagues. The Cup then came into the possession of the National Hockey Association (NHA). The NHA eventually folded, and through various consolidations, the National Hockey League (NHL) became the clear leader in the field and was granted ownership of the Stanley Cup. The Stanley Cup playoffs have been played for the last 80 years and are one of the strongest professional sports traditions. This tradition has carried the league to heights that were unimaginable when the NHL originally formed. Over the long history of the Stanley cup, the Montreal Canadiens have been the most successful franchise. The Canadiens have won the Stanley Cup 24 times, which is almost an average of once every four years. Henri Richard, of the Montreal Canadiens, won a record 11 of the 24 Stanley Cup titles the team won. The Stanley Cup itself has also undergone many changes since being designed by Lord Stanley. One of the original

“There are more than 2,200 different names engraved on the Stanley Cup” conditions upon which Lord Stanley donated the Cup was the winning club’s name and year be engraved into a silver ring fitted to the Cup. That same tradition still holds today, where every member of the team is also engraved on the award on a silver band placed at the bottom of the Cup itself. There are more than 2,200 different names engraved on the Stanley Cup, including players, coaches and owners of the Cup-winning teams, and every 13 years, a new ring is added to the bottom of the Stanley Cup to add more names of the Cup’s winners. One of the more unique traditions of the Stanley Cup is winning teams and eventually every player on the winning team gets to spend a day with the Cup. There are many interesting stories associated with this privilege. In 1906 it was forgotten at a photography studio where it ended up a geranium planter before being retrieved by hockey officials. It has been a movie popcorn bucket, champaign glass, and water bowl for both dogs and horses, the latter the 1994 Kentucky Derby winner. The Cup has been left in the bottom of swimming pools, seen the interior of a few “gentlemen’s clubs”, and, on the other side of that scale, been used in the baptism of the Colorado Avalanche’s Sylvain Lefebvre’s first child. Currently the Cup is accompanied by a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame during the player’s excursions to ensure its safe return.
